want to know how it went.should be alot of turkeys down
I think there was just a group there. I'll be there next weekend. Can't wait!
I'll be there on the 17th (I think we still need one more person for the hog&turkey combo) and I'm curious about this too---> I'm calling Ray now to see how it went,,,,, be back soon!
no but I was very tempted to when I was there last august! :)
We had 8 to 10 inches of rain Saturday from 330 pm to 4 am Sunday. What a soaker! Thunder and lightning was unreal.
We had two hunters in camp, and they had a few chances at pigs, but the weather really kept a lid on things as far as hogs went.
I bet we saw at least 50 turkeys...and heard around 25 to 30 gobbling on the roost both mornings.
Saturday am, the turkeys were definitely heard, but they were completely henned up. The girls would move in right under the birds and get em off the roost, and carry them off in the opposite direction from us.
Sunday am the guys both wanted to hog hunt so Squirrel Bait and I tried the turkeys. The wind started up real early, blowing hard, and making it difficult- Mike went down to where he heard the birds the morning before and got skunked completely.
I went to a place I had in mind, hoping the birds were split up pretty good by the storm and that I might get lucky and get in the middle.
I busted 3 hens off a low roost right off the road going in, got set up in a little woods patch and did a tree yelp which was immediately answered by a couple birds back toward the way I came in. Hens flew down and grabbed those birds and took them away.
I stayed and did a fly down, then some purrs when the wind allowed, and was about to give it up and go when I saw two heads coming in to my little field from the right, headed straight for where the other birds were gobbling from.
I cut at em and turned em...and took one out with the smoke- "bow". My wife is very happy we are eating fried turkey breast tomorrow evening.
In a couple weekends things ought to be perfect for my next two groups, with lots of hens on the nest.
I still have two slots left for April 17,18,19 if anybody wants to hook up.
The guys coming that weekend are from New England and Maryland, in case rides can help someone make the decision.
i would say alot more will be on the ground soon
There are so many birds over there I bet if you used an infrared lense the trees at night would look like a dog's back covered in fleas!!!
It's gonna be a great turkey season boys!!!!
I was there this weekend. What a great time. Friday after noon was perfect. Had a good size boar at 10 yards look thru me. What a rush. Rained a little before dark. Then the wind started blowing and swirling. Saturday morning I was paired up with Squirrel Bait. Got a turkey to gobble on the roost. Got set and two owls got to banttering back and forth behind us. A ridge full of gobblers further back in the swamp statrted going crazy. Oh boy this is gonna be good. Squirrel Bait started calling. The hens started going crazy and took the gobblers deep into the swamp.
Me and Squirrel Bait to off for the swamp. Crossed two creeks and one was almost knee deep. Burned up alot of shoe leather. The birds never made another sound. Dang hens.
Meet up with Ray and Carlton. Ray goes "were have you guys been"? Birds are gobbling like crazy at the white house. Ha thats where we started this morning. Not funny Ray. Went back to camp to get my bow. Ray told me to take a practice shot. I did and he yelled dead pig. Thru my bow in the truck and jumped in side. Squirrel Bait reminded me that I need some arrows. Man, brain fart. That afternoon the rain started. Ya can't get but so wet. Then the big flashes of lightning.
Sunday morning woke up to stars in the sky. Me and Carlton decided to sit on a well used waterhole. Well I got ruffed up and crippled by a tree early ing morning...but kept going. Healing up good now. The wind started howling and swirling bad.
Guys this was my second time to Rays place. I will be going back. Rays a great host and cook. Squirrel Bait wanted to tell ya thanks helping on the turkeys, but you left camp before I got back. Wanted to give ya a big ol hug. :p
Remember what happens in hog camp stays in hog camp.
Benny
Oh one more thing. Boy can Ray sharpen a grizzley broadhead. After he shows you how simple it is..you think this isn't rock science.
Thanks for the pointers Ray. You need to do a how to video.
Benny
Ok, ok....ya'll have convinced me..Hey Ray! I'll be there Friday bout dark!
Yes, Ray shot my turkey.
I am so into the hog hunting and we got rained out Sat afternoon and I had several opportunities to get a hog that just fell short that I had to go Sun morn. I still am kicking myself for not shooting a blackie that I thought was too small, but in hind sight was probably a good pig for a beginner like me. On Sat Ray had worked as my caller and there was a lot of gobbling but when they hit the ground it was over so I went hog hunting Sun. If I had been with Ray I would have a gobbler in the bag, if I could shoot.
But its hunting not killing, I'm just glad someone got one.
Had a great time and learned a lot. I think the property is about as good as it gets and those of you from different regions of the country would especially appreciate it as its so different. Its sort of like a Georgia boy going to Colorado for the first time Elk hunting or to Alaska from the East.
Those guys kept me entertained all weekend too. Good food and I want to go back.
You guys are making it even harder for me to wait another week and a bit, before I get to head south to visit Ray,and his turkeys and pigs.Oh coincidently Ray,I just put the first HEAVY coats of finish on something awful pretty.Would you like your name on it?
Bill
You bet. How about naming it < RRREEEEEETTTT! > as well?
I was thinking HERE PIGGIE PIGGIE, but RRREEEEETTT! sounds great. I have my magnus bull heads shooting good, but thats no guarantee I can handle the head shot if the time comes.I asked Tracy if she thought I could make the turkey head shot, she said sure EVENTUALY! Nothing like moral support form the wife.
