Title: A Black Swan of a different feather (pics)
Post by: vermonster13 on March 30, 2009, 02:40:00 PM
UPS just dropped this off for me. Black & brown dymondwood riser. Carbon backed limbs with   clear ceramic belly over Black Walnut veneers. 60" 50@30. Will get shooting pics later, have to go get my boy at school.

Now you have. I got lucky to get it. The stuff is harder to get a hold of than the black. Stealth high-tech!    :biglaugh:

Sounds like the stuff they are making the invisible handguns out of to fool the airport screeners.  :)

Very nice, unique looking bow ya got there. Should be a good shooter, too, with the forward riser.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceramic

"Carbon ceramic", is not too uncommon a name although imo vastly misleading
- used for core, i assume it is carbon microballons syntactic foam, perhaps even mesophase(pitch) hollow spheres?
- for facings probably similar fibres (as opposed to PAN fibre)

Both above will never be transparent. Unless somethin Really new has been invented.

Several oxide ceramics promise better properties than glass could they be manufactured...not likely to be transparent either but,
Some glasses may be crystallised after manufacture, like Corning transparent "glass-ceramic" kitchenware. Corning had the patent anyway. The trick is to crystallise the thing into grains or crystallites smaller than the wavelength of light.

I look forward to hearing more about these bows, and this material.

"ceramic" btw. means pottery, enter the pottery bow?

Thanks guys it's fast. Was shooting 30.5" Axis 400s with 300 up front. Doesn't seem to lose anything with the veneer.

The ceramic polymer is the belly lam, the core is maple actionwood.

Anytime you want to shoot it Larry come-on up. This one isn't leaving without me.    ;)

Impressions so far. I need to find the magic brace height yet and tweak the silencers. Very fast and consistent, broke three Axis nocks and need to re-fletch two others. Only shooting at 15 and 20 yards though.

I have a few pieces of clear ceramic in the shop right now... I use it as platen liners on my knife grinder.  The stuff is tough.

You do get some amazing toys my friend!

I didn't even know Black Swan even used wood veneers they look nice! Have you shot your bow through a chrony yet my new 49lb@27" hybrid is the fastest bow I have owned under 50lbs so far. The thing I am really pleased with is the hybrid bow is very quiet, light weight and easy to shoot with accuracy.I am not crazy about the 62" length I have become so use to short bows the last year plus I am haveing a hard time adjusting back to a 62" bow again. If I can't get adjusted to the length I think I will sell this Swan hybrid and order a new one piece 56" Swan brushfire. Anyway not trying to hijack your thread but here is a few pictures of my new Swan I guess I am a member of the Swan club now also.

You have a piece of the Zebrawood used in my Brushfire riser used for your riser. Cool. No chrony yet.

Dave, that's an interesting bow too be sure! I like the looks of that riser. How's she compare to your other Swans?

Looks to need a little higher brace than my metal risered ones. Fast like always and the veneers are awesome.

Vermonster13, what do you think of the brushfire I can't find much user feedback on this model? I have several Shrews 54" and 56" models so I am use to a short light bow and the added performance of the carbon limbs on the brushfire appeals to me.

I have a 56" Hybrid. It is very fast and very quiet. The handle is designed to resist torque, it isn't the same shape as the Shrew.

David,

Cool bow. I would prefer a 56" bow also. I know you like yours. Does Arvid make a bow like this wooden riser model in 56" that shoots well at your 30" draw length? I really like the looks of this newest bow of yours.

So are you serious about it being a "clear ceramic"? If so, ALON is wicked expensive...and durned near impossible to get outside of area 51. Did Arvid throw some Kungfu on the military transport?   ;)

Post by: vermonster13 on March 31, 2009, 01:23:00 PM
Dead serious. Arvid's Special Forces background and NASA history give him connections most can only dream about. He got enough to make two sets, mine and a test set before them. The stuff is tough and so close to clear glass you wouldn't know just by looking at without knowing what to look for. You are right though it is expensive, cool to have one of kind(for now at least) though.

Mine likes a 8" brace height.  Fastest, quietest, best shooting bow I have shot.  I have some longbow limbs on order.

David, you get ALL the cool new toys !!! I imagine Mr. Arvid's waiting list has gotten a little longer because of your post, I know I want one with a wood riser....and I have two already. I shoot my Swans better than any other bow I've owned or had the opportunity to shoot.
Congrats, btw, on the new Swan, I hope you like it as much as I like mine.

Hey guys, are both those Swan riser shapes still available or is Arvid only offering the forward handle now?

Also is there is a difference in performance between the two different risers, with the same limbs?

Awesome bows, no doubt. Def next on the list.

The riser I have is one of only two that style. Hatchchaser has the other one. The only wood riser that will be made now on is the one Steel has in either actionwood or exotic.
