Look at that goo on the arrow pic. Can't wait for the rest of the story!!!
Lotsa goo was on lotsa arras.
Just a taste: Ever heard of a feller skewer two pheasants in full flight with an arra? Ever heard of a young man condor a quail clean outta the air as it exploded from underneath his toe? Ever seen a pheasant bobbing and weaving through the air dodging flu-flus like a WWII fighter dodging ack-ack flak? Ever get so tired slingin arras at flushed game you had to sit down? Ever seen a fine bird dog quit giving you crazy looks after it gets accustomed to the "whoosh!" of a fluflu and he sees a few birds fall but still no gunshot? Ever hear somebody say "Yer huntin 'em with WHAT? Ya'll are crazy, they're hard enough to hit with a shotgun." Ever donate a pint of yer blood to the health and well being of blackberry bushes?
Welllll...jest hold on then, cuz it's a comin!
Pheasants are fun, but whomever took a quail on the fly is my new HERO :notworthy:
Amen brother.....and glad you and your family were a part of it all!
This whole trip was the result of this project and getting it to Terry...
http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=072077;p=1
I decided it was time to head south and Dad was all for being a part of the delivery, helping with the drive, and sharing as much adventure as we could fit in in a couple days!
We would go directly to Terry to drop off the mount, spend the night at 'Casa De Coots', and the next morning to head for Alabama to spend the next couple days with Don and Skyler and the rest of the Wilson family.
We pulled out of here at 4:00am Thursday and I was huggin' Terry and introducing him to Dad about 7:30pm. It was a long drive, but getting to see Terry again made it all worthwhile.
Once we got the deer unloaded and I could see it had made it with hardly a hair out of place I could finally breath again :notworthy: :clapper:
The best part was all of us sitting on the porch talking till it it was time for all of us to hit the rack.
After meeting Terry and family, Joe and his family, my father was really starting to see why Trad Gang and the friends I have made here are so special to me.....
Headed to Alabama Fri. morning and hung out with Don most of the day at his store. Met Don's dad Hershel, and also met Conan "The Natural Born Killer". He's a TG member, but not sure what his handle is. But I suggest a change to "TNBK"....
Went to visit a very talented taxidermist, and then once school was done, headed to the house to meet Skyler, Tammy, and of course "The Boss" little Chloe Beth. I've known Don for a little over a year now, and after meeting his Mom Tammy, it's easy to see why he's a such a good kid....
Again, once meeting the whole Wilson family, Dad could understand why I talk so highly of my trad gang friends...
We met Don after he finished work and went out to have some real good Mexican food. Had a great meal in preparation for the main event.....a night of bowfishing!
I've bowfished a bunch, especially the last couple years with my friends Gary and Timmy. But this would be my first nighttime bowfishing outing!! After seeing what these guys shoot on the threads they have here on TG, I was really looking forward to this. After all I do kinda like to shoot stuff with my bow ;)
To make it even better, My Dad was coming along to share our adventure!
We gathered our gear and were soon headed out...
Conan would be our captain, he's got an outstanding boat all tricked out for night bowfishing......
Skyler and I would do the shooting, Conan would drive and spot, and Don spotted and explained the why's and how's of doing this at night knowing it was my first time.....
I learned one thing real quick....them skinny little gar are hard to hit!!!
Skyler was first on the board with a good shot on a gar. I don't have a pic, so go ahead Wilson boys, you're up.....
WELL!!! Shawn
good start....now on with the story!!! :clapper:
We had a blast. One of the best experiences of my life. :archer:
Thanks guys
Chase

Don, I've already figured out sleeping arrangements for you guys when you come up :knothead: . Don was the official camera man as he had his and mine while we were out on the boat. We can let the pix tell some of the story...

We did eventually find a few big Buffalo carp. Don's got more pix than I do on my camera. Regrettably, we missed more of those giants than we killed

We're headed out bowfishing now but gonna post a few before we leave.....Curt and I made 27 flu-flu's on Saturday for our group and a few practice shots........ I love it keep it coming. Can't wait to see where this goes.
We had been planning this weekend for a long time. It was great to have Curt and his dad here. Friday After school, I met Curt at my home and we messed around for a few hours before setting out for Dinner. After a great meal, we went home to prepare for the bowfishing trip. As Curt said, it started out kinda slow, but then it seemed like someone flipped a switch and they were there. At One time, me and Curt both had Big fish on at the same time. It was really exciting...We shot carp, buffalo, and gar.....We missed an undisclosed amount of shots. :knothead: but we had a great time. Saturday we went to Unclaimed Baggage, then when we got home we started making flu-flus and shot every bow we owned. At dark, we met Conan(his handle is FurStalker) at the boat ramp, but the storm got us and we had to call it quits. JC and Chase set up a meeting place for Sunday Morning AND....................Curt, JC,.....It's your turn....................
Skyler's an old pro at making spiral flu-flu's now!
Sunday morning it was time for the Pheasant/Quail hunt that Don had set-up. It would be Conan, Don, Sky, JC and his boy Chase, and myself with bows. We were all hoping that Terry would be able make it but he was covered up. My Dad and Don's Dad would be our back-up shotgunners. We figured we better have them so we could at least bring something home with us :biglaugh:
More warm up at the house before we left to meet JC ....Don, Sky, and Conan....

Wait a minute wait a minute wait a minute...you mean you got to practice before the hunt...NOW you tell me :scared:
Chase and I couldn't be a part of the fish slaying but only because school/work/commitments intervened. I've seen Conan's boat, and know Don and Skyler's propensity to stick arrows into big fish...I knew it would be a night to remember for Curt. Sorry we couldn't join them.
But...Sunday morning I was giving permission by the preacher to skip. After telling him we intended to try to cut some feathers off of airborn birds with longbows he said "Lord son, I'm gonna pray fer you!" Well, the prayers were sho nuff answered.
Me and my dad(JC)were supposed to leave at 11:00 to go to one of my wrestling banquet and i had to talk my mom out of it. Everybody was ruting for me and just luckaly i cought her at a good time(church) and got to stay for some quail slayin. It was a lot of fun
Curt very nice.Taken your Dad on spring break..More people should do this kind of spring break.(Ah.. Curt this is a trad bow site..Whats up with the gun?) Anyway enjoy..Thanks for the Pix and story..Tucker
You guys had a blast. Thanks for sharing...can't wait to see the rest!
that looks like great fun Sky!
hey how do you like that back quiver? i was thinking of one of those for my Ozz hunt, need something to hold a bunch of arras
Watching the dogs work on the birds was a big thrill for me, and brought back a lot of memories. My Brittney "Ruger" had to be put down a couple years ago, just a week shy of his 15th birthday. This was the first time around any pointers doing what they live for....made me realize how much I miss my Ol' boy.......
Jeff's dogs were great and it wasn't long at all and we were flinging arrows. I'll let some pix and vid's tell a bit.....the sound is pretty bad because of the howling wind.....
Pheasant....

Quail....
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v77/Guru39/Bama%2009/th_Bama09028.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v77/Guru39/Bama%2009/?action=view¤t=Bama09028.flv)
The Quail in this pasture were bonus leftovers from a previous hunt. Most of the birds we did manage to kill with our bows were, as Don put it, "assassinated" , or shot on the ground(after all,we were shootin' bows). We mostly let Sky and Chase shoot first and once the bird got moving, if they missed, it was on! We knew within a second it would be airborn and more than likely killed by our back-up gunners after we made the "sky black with arrows" and all yelled about how close we were on every shot! I will say this though, a lot of the birds weren't shot at on the ground and were only shot at once flushed. It's hard to imagine having any more fun with a bow than we were having! After years and years of wanting to do this, I finally was getting the chance and it was an absolute blast!!!!!
My biggest surprise came when, as a big rooster pheasant flushed and flew quartering away...I watched my big yellow carbon express flu-flu catch up to him....and actually hit the bird accross the back and down he went! I couldn't believe it! I'd actually taken one out of the air!
When I picked up the bird I could see that I'd only taken feathers off his back and what really brought him down was a broken wing....I was thrilled!!!!!
I don't think it was five minutes later, another point...we lined up...Jeff flushed another big rooster...he went up on front of us and some arrows started flying...but as he hit the wind...he turned into it...crossed over the line of shooters and headed out the back door....
I couldn't couldn't even draw to shoot until he cleared the line of shooters...but as he got behind us...quicker than I can tell....I turned and drew...swung and released....The arrow hit him square thru the vitals and went in till about equal amounts were out both sides.....
To say I was a little excited would be an understatement! I guess knocking two out of the air was more than I could take (and certainly unexpected)...I went a little crazy as raw emotion just poured out...My reaction even took me by surprise, so I bet the other guys were a little taken back...I wouldn't have been more excited if I'da killed a P&Y 12 pt!!!
Having Dad there to see it and share it....well....'nuff said....

We had a LOT of close calls on the Pheasants and the Quail...We grazed, shot thru wing feathers, and Shot thru the tail feathers several times. The Pheasants were just tough. They would fly off with an Arrow sticking out of them....The Quail was awesome Fun but VERY hard to hit running on the ground and NEARLY impossible on the wing, but that's another story for someone else to tell.....And it's a good one......We think we shot 200-300 arrows at those flying Quail.....A person would think missing any thing that many times would irratating and flustrating but it was Great fun and I think everyone would do it again in a heart beat.....I know that we are already planning it...... (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k209/rickybob_2006/CIMG3837.jpg)
Here is a few of the Dogs working...... (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k209/rickybob_2006/CIMG3843.jpg) (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k209/rickybob_2006/CIMG3781.jpg)
We can't wait to come back down and do it again bud!! I feel like coming back down and hanging with you guys right now. But hopefully you'll come up for Muzzy in Aug.
I did end up with a souvenir arrow....I'd hit a pheasant on the ground as it tried to get away in a real thick pile of brush....then he gathered up and took flight with my flu-flu hanging out of him... arrows flew, and shots rung out and I could tell Don's dad Hershel had hit it with his last blast.
He said..."I bet that arrow ain't any good no more"...when we finally recovered the bird in some thick stuff, I pulled the arrow out and could plainly see where 5 pellets had hit and splintered my arrow. This was the same arrow I'd taken my two birds out of the air with, so I ended up with a very cool memento of an unforgettable hunt.
The best shot of the day was yet to come, and Skyler can tell that story :notworthy:
Curt's two shots that skewered those pheasants are the two finest shots I've ever seen. I mean, wicked accurate, right through the middle.
I blew through tail feathers, clipped wing feathers, even physically bounced an arrow off one because of the angle...but man, Guru just flat smoked them.
I'll say it without any reservation at all: after missing so many, I dealt it to one on the ground and there he stayed.
There was a second one with a broken leg that 3 fellers shot at on the ground and missed...I just couldn't hold back any longer so I took that one too. Curt, you got the video of that one?
We clipped quail, skimmed quail, and more often than not missed them by a mile. I found it impossible to lead them far enough on a crossing shot and to get the bow drawn, anchor and release before they had hit 4th gear.
Man oh man, what a time. Next time I think we'll forgo the pheasant and stick with the quail. But I'll be practicing before hand and build me some snaros too!
Don, you gotta show the pic of Sky and the condor cut quail...
:clapper: :clapper:
Simply Awesome!!!! As curt put it, how could you have any more fun with a bow!!!
Way to go guys, glad you were able to enjoy the experience, and thanks for sharing it with us!!
What a great weekend..a dream hunt for sure.

Next up...the after lunch quail hunt...and the best shot of the day.....
When we got out of the truck at the quail field, the dogs were pointed. After shooting at a few on the ground and shooting at a bunch in the air, we had finally made it to the other end of the field. The dogs pointed one in a clump of grass. We got lined up, me on the end, and Chase went in for the flush. The quail got up and flew to the left. I seem to remember Dad saying "Sky,Sky!" as I drew back. I don't ever remember releasing, but the next thing I knew feathers were flying everywhere. I was extremely excited! :bigsmyl: :) :campfire: (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k209/rickybob_2006/CIMG3846.jpg)

Skyler, That is the COOLEST story I ever heard. Michael
Quotes from the Hunt............
"I can find new guides, just don't shoot my dogs"
Jeff Ferguson, owner, at the pre-hunt talk....I THINK he was kidding :)
"I don't really think them Arrows would hurt that bad" One of the guides :scared:
"Man, I just barely missed" This was EVERYONE numerous times through-out the day ;)
Hey everyone it looks like we might have a ST. JUDES Pheasant/Quail combo Hunt in the Works for the upcoming Auction........Would anyone be interested in this hunt??????
Way to go Sky a Quail out of the air! now thats Impressive :scared:
Congrats Bro
Thanks EVERYONE for the compliments...that shot made my day. Andy, I absolutely love my quiver. It is comfortable, easy to use, holds alot of arrows, and has a cap that goes over the top and a carbon drain in the bottom. I think you would like it alot.
You can count on bid Don! :readit:
Here's some more pix and video of one of the best days of my life....the laughter and smiles tell the story...

On Skyler's "shot of the day" quail, for some reason I don't remember, I'd gotten down low as the bird flushed so other could shoot, and when I looked up I saw the arrow connect in a puff of feathers...of course the emotion in me boiled out with a huge ....Yeeeha!, and we all hollered and jumped around a bit! Young Skyler had done what seemed impossible by point of the hunt...congrats again little buddy!

Thanx fellas....couldn't have shared it with finer people :notworthy:
Conan, word is you'll be well practiced by next year bud :clapper:
Thanks for sharing the vids and photo's.
Rod, Your quivers were very well represented on the hunt,Sky, Chase, and Don. I've hunted with Terry quite a few times now too when he was using his.
I've always after 30yrs. used a bow quiver, never liked back or other hanging quiver. But I after being around the guys using the Arrowmaster, I can see where I would definitely have a use for one of your quivers.
It is, without a doubt, the best designed "non-bowquiver" I've ever seen
Great times with great friends...lots of memories made on this one.
