I recieved an email from Oldskool from Ohio. He said he would be in AR and wanted to get together for some shooting and to meet a fellow tradganger. We set up a place to meet and spent the day tromping through the woods stump shooting.
I have been stump shooting once but broke enough aluminum arrows that I knew it was cheaper to shoot in the back yard. Oldskool loaned me one of his aluminum footed carbon arrows and opened a whole new world for me. He claimed his arrows were darn near indestructable and to prove it he came to full draw and shot a white oak at a distance of about 10 yards. When I saw that arrow bounce off the tree I exspected to see one destroyed arrow but it was in perfect shape.
We shot stumps, logs and whatever caught our eye all day long and I could really see the benefit of stumping. It was fun and I can't think of a better way to practice a hunting shot situation.
The last hour of the day I destroyed one of his bomb proof arrows. I had my uptenth direct hit on a white oak stump and the shaft broke just behind the footing.
I had shot that single arrow from 9:30 am untill 6 pm without damaging it. Oldskool had been shooting his for 6 months without breaking it. He said he wouldn't hold it against me though.
I was so impressed with the abuse these stumping arrows took I had to order some for myself a few minutes ago. Even if I break one in a day's worth of shooting it is still way better than a dozen aluminums in a day.
All day long I had snakes on my mind as we tromped through the woods. I tended to walk a lot slower than Oldskool and watched where I placed my next step.
He on the other hand was the oppisite. We had been in snake country all day long and he had walked with not a care in the world. It really impressed me the way he ignored the possibility of stepping on one of them.
I was thinking to myself all day that I wish I was brave like him when it comes to snakes. He walked like he was snake proof until just before dark.
We heard a buzzing sound from some kind of insect and Oldskool said it sounds kind of like a rattlesnake. I said I was suprised we hadn't seen a rattlesnake all day. His reply was "You have them here? "Now you tell me!" :eek:
I have stumped with oldskool a few times now. Good fella and I can't believe you guys finally broke one of his arrows!
I just finished setting some arrows up like his and can't wait to try them out. Hopefully I get to soon.

Hey Pac, the one arrow we broke,on closer examination, you didn't break,you can see were my hammer head hit it and cut it in half.

You forgot to mention that we went to Crow Creek Bows and checked out the bows Mr. Patton makes.Man he does nice work. I think we shot half his inventory of bows. I think Mr. Patton can talk about trad bows all day. He's a real nice guy.

That's quite a coincedence because we ate lunch at Wendy's and he didn't sneek a fry that I know of. Of course he didn't know me that well either. Or it might be because he knew I had my snake charmer in my jeep. :biglaugh:

Any chance I could get the recipe for your stumping arrows? I like to go out stumping, and would be more inclined to do so if I didn't feel like I was throwing money to the wind with all the trashed arrows.

I'm going from memory but will be calling Oldskool if I run into any snags.
Basically it is a Carbon Express footed with a section of aluminum shafting.
There are a couple of threads about it if you search "footing carbon shafts".
I don't exspect my shafts to arrive until some time next week but when they do i'll take some photos and try to explain what I'm doing.
Heydeerman, I had to bring my wife down to be with her sister. She just had open heart surgery yesterday and they didn't expect her to make it,but she came out fine, the next 2 weeks will tell the story. Doc said that is the most critical time. If she makes that she will be ok.
Burnsie I use cx heritage 250 out of my widow with 100 grain brass insert,1.25 inch aluminum for footing and 145 up front. Use a 30 cal brass bore brush on cordless drill to rough up the inside of shaft and footing. Clean good with denatured alcohol and 2 ton epoxy to hold it all together. I use a Q-tip to clean inside of shaft and footing and to apply epoxy with.let them dry for 24 hrs. They are almost impossible to break
There is a thread that dino started called footing sizes for carbon shafts with most of the shaft sizes on there. Have fun and good shooting.

LOL Jim, those arrows will definitely give you a cocky attitude when you shoot them.
My shafts arrived a few minutes ago. I have the 1st footing in place. Now comes the hard part, leaving it alone until the 2 ton cures. Only 23.5 hours to go until I can shoot it. :archer:

I put a wrap on it too so everything should be set for bareshaft tuning.
