The Adventures of Evo: A St Jude Childrens Research Hospital Fund Raiser
Here's a chance to help the St Jude Childrens Research Hospital and shoot/hunt a rare bow. My
RH 44 @ 28 66" Blackbrook Evo longbow is going to be traveling around the country to spend time with Trad Gang members. Building memories while raising money to help the St Jude kids. For a $20 donation to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital you get to spend two weeks with the Evo. I ask that you share pictures of your time with the bow here so we all can share in the adventure. When your time is up I ask that you ship it Priority Insured to the next person in line (I will PM you their address). I will PM the address to mail checks or Postal M/O to all who state their interest in this thread.
All funds raised go to St Jude to help the kids. Thank you all in advance for this great chance to make a difference for the children and to Terry Green, vermonster & Doug Campbell for all their help in making this possible! :clapper:

I will be signing up once work picks up.
Really awesome!

thanks to vermontster for helping me give birth to this idea and also several other tradgangers who also suggested it.

Put me on the list. You should recommend arrows too. Let me know where to send the $$
Wonderful idea. Can't think of any better cause than St Jude's
sam
-
What an absolutely wonderful idea! i would like to have 4 weeks (i'm a little slow). Let me know when and where to send the money! :)
And may your hunting adventures continue Larry!
-
I'm honored to be in as well. What a cool idea. Can't wait for the info on where and when to send the $$$.

Would it be possible for me to do this? When somebody in Central IL has the bow, Can I pay my $20 for the kids and shoot with them for an afternoon? I would be happy to pay half the shipping to the next person in line. I dont need the bow for 2 weeks. I just want to help out, shoot a different bow and meet a fellow trad ganger....Roy
-
thank you all
-
Please put me on the list as well!
-
I too would like to be added to the list. I live near Parkersburg, WV, near eastern Ohio.

Here's a chance to help St Jude for very little money and have some fun to boot.
Good job Larry!
-
no...thank you vermonster you helped with most of it so i need to put credit where its due
-
I'm in. Just let me know the details of where to send the $20 and what dates are open (or is it a random draw - either way I'm in).
Thanks
-
first come first serve type of deal.was thinking of sending it to specific areas then others but to much work keeping track of it all.
-
this is a great cause people
-
Let's make sure we keep track of the delivery confirmation# so it doesn't get lost!
-
Count me in. Thanks Doug
-
Would love a chance to shoot that bow. Add my name and if I get it during the summer I will make sure kids at the summer camp we live at get a chance to shoot it and learn some trad and giving back.
-
yes lets do keep track of it...some needy kids are counting on it. you are #1 owlbait i'll be shipping it as soon as doug emails me....thank you all......larry
-
i will be adding two days to each persons two weeks to allow for shipping time.you can send it early if you like but please either way ship it insured priority with a tracking number so we have control of where evo is....thank you all very much..this is a great way to get the best use out of this bow.bonus is that shes a great shooter also.
-
Larry, I'm in , great idea, should be fun !
-
Larry I'm in Nauvoo about 2 hours from you. When I get the bow, let's see if we can find a shoot about half way in between or so and then you can shoot the Evo too. I'll take care of the shipping to the next person and you can give what you want to St Jude. So the bow will earn double during that time and that's a great idea.
sam
-
Now this is directed to Roy in Canton, not Larry. But I think Roy has a great idea and we can then have pics of the whole thing and some $$ for the kids. If this sounds ok to you, Larry.
sam

sounds good to me sam...still need roys address...larry

I don't think Roy actually wants to get the bow just shoot it when I have it and he's willing to pay $20 to do that. I can let him know when I have it and we'll shoot together in the area. Will be nice. So you'll get 2 for on on this one .
Great idea once again.
thanks

Mike,
Evo is here. Picked her up this morning and just had to shoot it. Evo is a really beautiful bow that shoots as good as she looks. It's still turkey season here in Oklahoma maybe, just maybe I'll be able to get to the woods with her this weekend. I didn't find any message inside the cap but I didn't look to much because I really wanted to string her up and run some arrows through her. Thanks Larry for the incredible opportunity to shoot this bow.

Hi
EVO has arrived in Nauvoo. Picked her up at the PO today. End cap was cracked but no damage to the tube or bow. I'll get a new end cap to ship back.
I've strung her and will take her outside later today. She's a total beauty of a bow. Pics to follow

i have talked with the bowyer a few times about these bows and i ask one thing from whomever gets evo to shoot and that is out of respect for another mans livlihood please do not copy his bow by using her as a form bow.not saying anyone will but just felt like it was important to toss that out there. i'm sure this is understandable to all concerned.if i can get his permission to do so i will let you all know..thanks....larry
-
No worries here. I couldn't make anything like this if I tried. It's a simply beautiful piece of work, even if it wasn't a bow it would be beautiful. I strung it and laid it on the bed. My wife said "Are you going to sleep with me or that tonight??"
I haven't answered yet!

Shoots like a dream. Totally dead in the hand and no stack at all. Seems to like a 45-50 spined woody the best. 125gr points. Fast and hard and groups so nice. Would not shoot more that 6 at a time for fear of breaking arrows.
Wonderful bow.

It must have been the end cap with my message I sent to gak. Oh well, was hoping to get a string of messages sent down the pike. Sure was fun to shoot. Ssamac, what arrows are you shooting?

Ok, to lighten things up a little today on Tradgang...a hoghunt was maybe promised to Ms. Evo if time allowed in my schedule. (Elkherder, no offense but "She" feels right when talking about Evo).
Ok, so a hoghunt it is. We will be hunting a rare species of collared peccary (not actually a hog, but sort of looks like one) only found in my area of south georgia on Lake Blackshear. In my neighborhood, the neighbors consider them to be pests. The weather has been bad, but hopefully we will have a small window of opportunity if the weather breaks. i will have TooKo along to help me with any tracking that might be needed, and i have yet to have the pleasure of meeting a finer trailing dog than him.
My apologies in advance to you Texas boys and girls. Pics to follow..... ;)
-
cool...can you post a closer pic of the arrow shelf area?
-
Awesome rastaman! That was the message. Hope to see evo bloody a beast, I killed some foam critters with her.
-
Evo, TooKo, and i were up at daylight, but it was still drizzly/misting rain out. i told them to be patient, let me get a cup of coffee, and we would all set out.
The morning started out slow, but we finally heard some "pigs" in the distance. After quietly and carefully closing the distance, Ms. Evo could taste the blood! (and by the way, she really likes pink!).
-
Just at the shot, the pig must have stepped forward cause the shot was a little far back for a south georgia pig's vitals. Looks like a long tracking job is in store. Sure am glad i got my tracking dog with me.... ;)

We decided to wait a little while before we took up the track. It didn't take TooKo long until he was locked on point. i eased up to see what he had....

Elkherder...i will get some pics for you later on the arrow shelf area. It is storming again.
Guys and girls, thanks for looking. This was done tongue in cheek to hopefully get you to look at a wonderful idea elkherder and vermonster13 came up with to help the kids at St. Judes. For $20 you get to spend a couple of weeks with a sleek, powerful, beautiful bow.
i have her for 2 to 3 more weeks, and Ms. Evo is already pushing me to take her on a turkey and deer hunt! I know you guys and girls are waiting with bated breath to hear the stories she will tell!
-
Great hunt and story Rastaman! I'll be hunting the same "type" of critter that you and Evo just put down... as I'll be hunting with her in July.
This is for a great cause (and I'm sure I will enjoy the effect).

My wife just called from her cell phone... picked up "eva" at the post office. That kind of threw me off for a second...
EVO and I will try to slip up on a "garden grizzly" tomorrow. pics coming no matter the outcome.
Kind of feels like Christmas in July!
-
I shot a couple of dozen arrows through EVO this evening. I normally shoot a recurve and found that I needed to cant the longbow a bit more than I do my recurve (sight picture?).
I was surprised at how fast Evo shoots a "Trad - Only 400 with a 125 grain field point"!
My best group at 15 yards is pictured below.
As I was finishing up, I shot one group from 40+ yards... just to watch the arrow flight. Here is the result... two good arrows (for me anyway) and one flyer. I was actually aiming for the upper left bullseye.
IMG]http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/fnshtr/40ydflyer.jpg[/IMG]
I'll shoot the broadheads tomorrow morning and see if I can get within 15 yards of a groundhog tomorrow afternoon.

Just a quick update. Broadheads shoot great... but I got rained out yesterday. I'm recovering from bronchitis and decided not to venture out. I did take a short drive and have a few "garden grizzlies" located. I have a plan.

EVO and I went stumpin' and grizzly huntin' this evening. We had a great time. Shot a lot and am getting real comfortable with EVO. Made some good shots... missed some easy ones (always that way for me it seems).
As we headed up the hill toward the ridge I noticed a redtailed hawk sailing on a path that would bring it directly overhead. In the warm blue early evening sky the chipmunk hanging from his talons was easy to spot at 20 yards straight overhead. If I could only be so lucky this evening.
A few steps further and spots erupted from a nearby stand of low thick shumac... a fawn headed straight down the bank to my right... blowing a high pitched alarm. Two seconds later a second fawn busted from a thick stand of horse weeds on my left... straight UP the bank to my left. Somewhere nearby (probably downwind) was Momma. It is hard to get "into the zone" after a rough day on the job. I reminded myself that I needed to take a deep breath and slow down. I'll not meet up with a wily eastern groundhog at this pace.
I shot at a bare spot 30 yards or so ahead and on the left side of the trail, then an anthill on the opposite side of the trail a few yards closer. I'm not sure how many arrows I stuffed into the back quiver before leaving the house. I purposely didn't count them... that way I won't remember how many I lost during my hike.
I find pleasure in the simplest of things in "nature"... Like the intricate design of lichen on a large sandstone atop the ridge...
or the translucent flowers with heads bowed for the evening on the damp forest floor. They were white, but you could see through them.
Before long I spotted a doe and fawn about 50 yards ahead of me as they entered the overgrown pasture field on top the ridge from the greenbrier thicket to my left (and quartering upwind of me). This was a chance to do a practice stalk. I actually got within 25 yards or so when I noticed a second fawn in the tall weeds to her left.
I followed them carefully down the ridge. I knew where they were headed... down off the ridge to the lush hayfield of timothy and clover in the bottom.
After snapping a few pictures from 25 yards, I noticed a deer to my left. At first I passed it off as the second fawn.. then realized that it didn't have spots. Closer examination (with my naked eye as I did not carry field glasses with me) revealed a decent rack for this area. Probably 14... maybe 16 inches wide. Unfortunately his antlers were not clear in the picture... that was the picture I took just before the doe blew and they all "disappeared" from view in a flash of white tails.
The stalk on the doe and fawn reminded me that I have put a lot of hunting under my belt in the past 40 some years. I can't "crouch" like I used to... it hurts too much. I was reminded of the time that my late brother (gone some 16 years now) and I had "duck walked" for 45 minutes up Lion's Head mountain in the gravelly range of Montana... trying to keep up with a magnificent 6X bull elk that only stopped every so often to bugle a challenge to any nearby rivals. The chase ended in my first close encounter with a bull (just out of position for my anticipated shot) and a missed shot by my brother just down the bank from me.
That reminded me that it's not just the kill... that makes memories. My brother died in an airplane crash at the young age (by my standards now anyway) of 45. We had hunted Black Bear in Ontario, elk in Colorado and Montana and whitetails in West Virginia and a few other eastern states. I sure do miss him. And every short hike afield... like this one, reminds me of him.
Next I noticed a gray squirrel on a limb about 10 feet from the ground, curled up in a ball that reminded me of a bullseye.
Where was he last fall or early winter when this would have been a shot I couldn't pass up? 10 yards away. To bad season is not in.
We finally slipped down to the bottom, next to the old barn where I spotted three "whistle pigs" the other day.
It was too late for them by now... Groundhogs must go to den early as I seldom see one after the sun reaches the top of the hill to the west. Another small herd of deer fed along 100 yards to the east, one sported a decent 14 - 16 inch wide rack. Two decent bucks today... the future looks OK.
EVO and I are real happy about our hike this evening. We enjoyed seeing the 32 deer, the squirrel, the hawk with the chipmunk... and all the other sights, as well as the sounds and smells that make the outdoor adventure what it is. And the memories... ESPECIALLY the memories. Sometimes you make memories... and sometimes you just enjoy them, we did a little of both this evening.
EVO feels like an old friend. We still have time to get some action in the upcoming week or so.
I'll send in another update ASAP.
Thanks again Larry for helping the kids and giving us older ones some memories... :archer:

A great groundhog hunt: pics and story coming up...
I didn't get out Saturday and there is no Sunday hunting here (I wouldn't go anyway as I am a Pastor and am extremely busy on Sundays).
My wife forgot to set the alarm this morning and I overslept. It was a good excuse to take the day off as vacation time... I wanted to take EVO out again anyway, and this was a beautiful day!
THE PLAN:
Slip up the creek and glass the fields on both sides. There are plenty of willows for cover and the rippling water should help cover my noise.
Here is where I started...
The creek follows the southern edge of the field for a couple of hundred yards, then winds out through the hayfield... I'll be traveling upstream until the stream leaves the edge of the brush. At that point I plan to cross the fence that separates the hayfield from the brush and move S-l-o-w-l-y along the fence glassing the field edge ahead of me.
It was thicker brush than I had thought. I'll probably end up with ticks and chiggers...
Here's a pic of EVO hanging on a willow as we start upstream.
What's the chances... I have never killed a groundhog with a bow. I've taken many with a rifle from 100 to 200 yards... but to get within range with EVO??? I don't gamble, but if I had to place a bet, I figure the odds are really stacked against me. What would the odds be? 20 to 1? 50 to 1? I figure they are closer to 100 to 1! In 40 some odd years of hunting I've only happened upon a groundhog in bow range... maybe three times. Maybe 500 to 1 is more like it!!
to be continued shortly
-
I didn't expect the stream to have this much water in it. I should have worn my gortex boots... oh well, it's 80 degrees out and I'm in a long sleeved camo shirt... the water actually felt good!
Glassing, wading, glassing, wading... nothing so far. I finally had "still hunted" to the point that the stream left the brush and started out into the hayfield. It was too open so I needed to leave the stream and cross the fence into the brush.
Here is where the stream began leaving the brush.
Before crossing the fence... I spied something very small but very white about 25 yards ahead... against the bank. I had taken a few warm up shots before leaving the house, but figured this was a good chance to test my skill (or luck) with a shot.
BULLSEYE! Wow... that was a great shot. Maybe the odds are a bit lower after all! I gotta see one first though.
(I'm waiting on pics to upload to photobucket.)
-
On the other side of the fence, the weeds were THICK! It was difficult to make my way through them while remaining quiet. Just a few steps into the weeds and something ran uphill from me... I think it was a groundhog as I have jumped many rabbits and never had one to run in such a straight line. I didn't follow up as I figured it was too late.
Here is where I spooked something up the bank.
After fighting through the brush for 50 yards or so, I was forced to work back toward the fence as the "jungle" just kept getting thicker. Once I got back closer to the fence I found a nice shady spot with a big rock to sit on. This was just above an old collapsed barn where I had seen a groundhog run into one afternoon last week.
Here is a shot looking out from my shady ambush site.
I sat there for about 1/2 hour glassing the clover field (the landowner had reseeded it this spring and the clover was thick).
I decided to work my way back up into the "neck" of the field (it narrowed down into the hollow to the south).
As I crept along... all at once I saw a "gray shadow" dart from the fence through the thick weeds and disappear about four feet in front of me. Closer examination revealed this den with two entrances.
Many years ago my grandfather told me that a gray squirrel will come back out of a hole in a tree if you give it about 15 minutes. I wondered how long it might take this groundhog to re-emerge from this den. I decided to wait.
Here is my view as I waited to see if the groundhog would come back out.
The weeds were very thick, but I knew exactly where to watch. I stood in the hot sun for about 20 minutes, waiting and waiting. The odds of actually getting a shot seem to be getting better... they may be as low as 20 to one (I thought).
While waiting for the "chuck" to reappear, I snapped this picture of a butterfly on a thistle bloom. I decided to include it here because it came out so good.
The finale is coming up next!
-

After 20 minutes or so in the hot sun... I decided to back up a few yards to get in the shade of a tree. Another 10 minutes passed before I noticed a bit of movement through the weeds... right where the groundhog had disappeared earlier.
I was able to distinguish an eyeball... then a dark nose. The weeds moved slightly and my odds started getting better and better. He would disappear and reappear a minute or so later. My left shoulder was aching from holding the bow in the ready to shoot position.
Eventually he came completely out of the den and stood up... when he stood, another groundhog... about the same size stood up from the other den hole! I now had two groundhogs standing about 8 yards in front of me and swiveling their heads... looking in all directions.
I had no face mask on... no hat... and my wire-rimmed glasses. My first thought was to wait until they dropped to all fours, but after several seconds I decided to draw. As I slowly came to full draw and felt my thumb knuckle "lock" behind my jawbone, I was surprised to see both groundhogs still standing there in front of me.
I picked a spot on the groundhog on the right and let the string slip away from my fingers.
WHUMP! The arrow hit right where I was looking. It went through the little grizzly and stuck into the dirt on the far side of him. They both disappeared in a flash.
I heard a squeal and then "growling". As I approached the den with no arrow knocked, I realized that the healthy groundhog was on top of the arrowed one... growling and biting at him. The one I shot could not enter the den as the arrow was preventing him.
All at once the other groundhog turned and ran straight at me! Charged by a grizzly!!!!
He was obviously confused and didn't even know where I was... I jumped in the air (reflex) and he ran by within a couple of feet.
The groundhog is a small one. I had no idea until after recovery.
Here's EVO's little trophy.
The WW did quite the job on the little bugger.
POC arrow by Dink and a 125 grain WW head.
I couldn't believe it. What were the chances? What were the odds? I had never attempted such a hunt before last week (when I didn't even see a chuck)... and here I am with a bow that doesn't belong to me, and a groundhog that I didn't think I could take.
I just wish I had drawn EVO during deer season!
She is a sweet shooting bow. I have thoroughly enjoyed her... as I hope the rest of you do that are yet to get her.
Only thing left for me with EVO? I may try calling a coyote in tomorrow evening before I pack her up for sending to the next lucky person.
What's the chances of getting a coyote? What are the odds of even calling in a coyote (which I've never done before)? Couldn't be a whole lot worse than the odds I had today!
Yep... I think I will give it a try!

Got the word from Doug G that she is on the way to my place. Best part is I had just remembered that I had signed up for her that morning and there is his PM. I've decided to be superstitious and take that as real good mojo. Can't wait for her to arrive. I have a date with my little girl to go snark hunting (stump shooting) :bigsmyl: She just one some arrows from another Tradganger and is itchin to move on from the target to real hunting. I will post picks.

What's the remaining schedule? I'm getting anxious!

Well I have had a chance to shoot her a bunch of times and am having a blast. She is very sweet to shoot and I wish I was a better shot to take full advantage of her. I live and work at a YMCA Summer Camp in the Adirondacks with 1500 acres of our own to play in,not too shabby.
:bigsmyl:

Also found time to take my daughter out snark hunting in the horse pasture infront of our house. She is shooting the Maddog pup she won in one of Vermonster13's give aways.

Plenty of targets in a horse pasture.

Only season going at the moment in my neck of the woods is squirrel and I am determined to get a tree rat before my time is up. Have taken a few shots but no luck yet. Will post more updates as things develop.
-
Today while I was stalking one of those pesky little tree rats I was able to stalk up to a nice doe at about 5 yards. It was very cool and probably as close as I will get, knowing my luck. She will turn back into a super wary, ghost of the woods in 2 weeks when season opens :knothead: . I had just lost an arrow shooting at a squirrel and came across her while I was searching for it. Any chance to be this close and to practice my stalking, is worth an arrow. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me otherwise I would of had great photo's of her.
All of you who are waiting on this bow I can tell you that you wont be disappointed. I think I will be sad when I go back to shooting my Bear Grizzly.

awesome pics man....great stories
-
Well I had another lovely morning walking in the woods, scouting deer, looking for squirrels and shooting this lovely bow. The woods behind my home are just beautiful with a mix of hardwoods, pine, balsam and hemlock. It was logged a few years ago and the clearings have these wonderful fern meadows filling them up. The sun streaming through the trees and the dampness from the rain we had last night made for a tremendous setting.
First group of the day at about 20 yards. Not the best and I am hoping to improve and probably will the day before I send her on her way.
A couple of hundred yards down the trail I jumped a couple of does and one of their last year fawns, out of their beds. They didn't spook and only moved off a short way without really knowing what had moved them. I was able to stalk up to within 15 yards before they noticed me. Even then with the wind in my favor and not making any moves, they still didn't blow out of there. I had 3 does within shooting range all presenting me with multiple shots at the same time, and the season still 2 weeks away. Please let them be feeling the same way once the season opens. :archer:

Had a few encounters with some of our local tree rats but still have not closed the deal with one of them. They are red squirrels and a lot smaller than greys which adds to the challenge. I did shoot three arrows at one and got all the arrows back, which is a miracle in and of its self, considering how thick the underbrush is. Will post more when I can get backout there.

Well she is packed and will be in the mail Monday morning. Work didn't let me get out the last couple of days or to get it in the mail on saturday. She was fantastic to shoot and will miss her. Got lots of oportunities to shoot at deer, just wasn't the right week. Seemed fairly forgiving to a variety of arrows. Good luck to all who shoot her in the future.

we need pics and stories
-
My money's also on you, Leo!
I don't normally make such bold statements as "I won't let you down", for a reason. Because I let people down sometimes. It just did not come together for me. Deer didn't come. Children wouldn't help with pictures. (If I have to beg, I'd just as soon forget it).
Anyway, I know Leo will provide pictures and I'm expecting a video or two.
Thanks for the opportunity.

no problem bona

No worries b. glass, it's all good.
I can't promise I'll be able to take a deer or any game animal with her, but I can promise I WILL certainly be trying to put SOMETHING on the ground. And there will definetely be pictures, lots of pictures. And....maybe, just maybe a video or two. :)

Thanks b.glass. :clapper: It's fun to follow EVO around.

This is so exciting! EVO shall be waiting for me when I return.
Ohio looks good this time of year, the leaves have all changed colors, it's not something I get to see all too often since I moved away. I miss this great state.

I got a chance to shoot her for a little bit today. She is very smooth and very swift. This is truly my first time ever shooting a longbow. I've always had recurves.

Well I just got back in from shooting EVO. I love this bow! She is so smooth. This is my first time shooting a longbow, and Larry and vermonster I can't thank you enough for the opportunity. In fact, I'm going to order me a custom longbow now. I've got the woods picked out already, hehe.
Or maybe I could just keep this one? Hmmm....
I let her play with the other bows for a while they get along great and I think they enjoy each other's company.

PM sent to you Larry with shipping details.

Sorry to hear about you being laid off Larry. If I had the money I would buy her from you in an instant. She is a great bow and i can't tell you how much I enjoyed shooting her. Thank you to you and everyone who had a part in this great endeavour. You may not be in a possition to auction her off but you already got a bunch of money for the kids with this whole program.
