Title: Masters of the Bare Bow vol.3 whos seen it.
Post by: Doug in MI on March 23, 2009, 10:52:00 PM
I got Masters of the Bare Bow vol.3 today.
It realy complements the other two videos and was the info I have been looking for. I have read some of the stuff they have discussed in magazines or on the web but to actualy see it just makes this dvd worth every penny.

I realy liked the part where Denny Sturgis jr showed how his shooting form has changed from the way he shot before. I dont know how long it him took to find all the right changes and put them together? But it looked like he  was happy with the results.

Also the bloopers were good also. To see Ron LaClare talking like a chipmunk was one of my favorites but there were alot more good ones to see.
Thanks Denny & Darryl

Who else has seen it and whats your favorite part?

Just finished watching the 1st 2 parts. I'll watch the target panic and rest tomorrow night. To much info to take in all at once. Great video and great addition to the 1st 2. Takes the shot to a deaper level.

I just got a chance to watch it today. I agree there's some really good information that is well explained.

As for the fast forward segment that makes me sound like a chipmunk,     :p     I think that's where I was commenting that I thought Denny needed a chest protector instead of a stance change....and how he should warn people when he's going to take off his hat in the bright sunlight....     :knothead:    ....       ...     :archer:

I liked the blooper descriptions of body parts and the use of kerosene...?  :biglaugh:

On a more serious note, there was a few things that I am looking forward to incorporating into my practice time. Good stuff.

IMHO, This is the best of the three MOBB videos. Both Rod & Larry give a lot of tips on how to really develop your shot.

Rod's description of how to build your shot by letting the bow tell you what you should do is excellent.

This video is going to help me a lot with my shooting.

Thanks guys,
Allen

I got to see it last week, IMO it is the best of the three.  There is some very solid information in there for anybody to better their shooting.   The practice and form segements were excellent!!dino

I just bought all three videos and can't express how happy I am with this purchase(It was far and away some of the best money I ever spent in archery equipment)!!!!  After a couple years off, I am going to start ALL OVER AGAIN and incorporate much of the techniques found in this DVD series to find MY new shooting style. I asked Mr. Migliorato to name my Mohawk longbow "The Rekindling". It's the perfect name! Because of these videos, I am more EXCITED about shooting longbows than I ever was!!!!

To Darryl, Denny and EVERYONE else who contributed to this series, I sincerely THANK YOU!!!!

All the best to all in TradGang,

Mike

I like Denny's slick look. He looks tough but I could still make him tap out.

I was watching it with my Grandaughters and when Ron's face showed up at the end, they started crying. What's up with that?

I finally got my hands on a copy and watched it yesterday, great job Rod, Denny and Darryl, and the rest of the masters.  It was fun hanging out with Denny and Darryl when we were taping the session.

I liked Rod's system of coaching letting the bow's reaction being the proof in the puddin.  That's a great "pearl".

Denny's section on how he has digested all the information from MBB and how it has affected his shooting is Great.  I applaud Denny for trying out some of the concepts, we can all work towards mastering the barebow.  All the shots on Critters was cool too!

It was interesting to see the master's take on Target Panic.  Rich Niblock's short on the clicker was good and that wall of his was impressive, WOW!

Those bloopers were funny, HEY  Ron when and why did you separate from Alvin, Simon and Theodore?  Do you still keep in touch with them?

My favorite part of the dvd was the "BAM!" section, my son and I were saying bam while watching Denny shoot.

Well Larry I can see that your usual serious demeanor has been affected by your exposure to Denny and Darryl...       ...     :D

Those guys are doing a great service to the traditional archery community with their Masters series. Giving great instruction from some of the more experienced archers and throwing in a little humor for entertainment.

Speaking of humor, with Dennys new bald look have you noticed the resemblance to Curly of the Three Stooges?      :smileystooges:  ....    :biglaugh:

Ron, I begged and pleaded with Darryl not to put you in the outtakes, but he wouldn't listen.   :)

I didn't realize that Curly was a killing machine.

  :saywhat:

Thanks again for all the support folks. I'm leaving in the morning to practice my new Bamm! technique in Argentina.

I been shooting Tradbows for a long time and I have learned from the first two but have not watched the third yet. I converted to 3 under last year and my shooting on critters has very much improved.I`ve killed the last 31 of 34 big game critters I`ve shot at. Thats a drastic improvement for me. The tips on the movies were priceless.

Denny don`t let`m hack on you about no hair. I`m like that as well ,,,its a gift from God.RC

Ron, Denny, Rod, Larry...maybe the 4 Stooges...  ;)  Instead of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour we could have the Traditional Archer's Comedy Tour...well maybe not.

Thanks you guys for putting these videos together. This Vol.3 has really helped me in my practice time. Good stuff!

Thanks for your kind words guys.  MOBB3 does contain a lot of good shooting info, thanks to Rod Jenkins, Larry Yien and of course (Mr. Bam!) Denny Sturgis Jr.  We hoped it would help archers improve their shooting...and have fun doing it.

Ron LaClair - Denny is always trying to blame the out takes on me.  You should see the way my dog cocks his head and listens when you do your chipmunk act.

I was quite surprised when I viewed MBB III last night.  I had thought it would probably be more of the same from I and II, which would have been fine too, but I wondered how they were going to come up with enough new stuff to make it worthwhile.

But MBB III is quite different from I & II.  Goes into quite a bit more depth on form.  It left me with more to think about than I and II, and I'll probably re-watch III more times than I will I and II.

I found III to be quite liberating in its discussion of form styles.  There is no straight-jacket bunch of rules there; it explains quite well how different forms might fit different people, and how to figure out what elements of form will best suit you.  It even illustrates how totally different and opposing mental images of the shooting process might work well for different people.

Great job, guys!

I have bought the first two and have just ordered the third. The information I have gained is invaluable. Since I'm a self taught archer/hunter (no family influence)it's helping me shorten the learning curve. My personally thanks to Darryl and Denny for putting together these video's and to all the archer's who gave me insight. Hopefully I will be able to put it to good use!

McDave - Thank you for your input.  You are exactly right.

MBB 1 and 2 give the viewer an overview of many different shooting styles, aiming methods and equipment choices of a variety of archers.

MBB 3 is much more in depth on helping an archer understand his own shooting sequence, find his own best form and learn how to perfect his own shot.

Many thanks to those who have taken the time to share their shooting expertise with us.

Rod - I think Denny has a weird sense of humor. LOL

I have vol. I and II and was half-thinking of getting III, but wanted some user feedback first. So thanks, this is a very timely thread.

Based on the short clip shown earlier the shooting methods emphasized appear to stress a  target shooting style (vertical bow, upright stance, prolonged anchor, exaggerated release, etc.).  There's no coverage of the Hill style or using Hill-style bows/arrows/theory/etc.   True?  If it is covered, what percentage (ballpark) of the video covers it?  I've nothing against formal target shooting and most of archery is fascinating for me, but I do have to admit that Olympic style instructional shooting isn't high on my video interest list.

For anyone who shoots Hill bows, Hill style and has seen the video, what is your honest opinion of the subject matter?  Thanks in advance.

you can shoot a bow hacked of an osage sapling, or you can shoot a compound, release aid, and drop away rest, and still priceless info from this video.  no aiming method or shooting methed is stressed or pushed, but each of the 120 minutes is pure information that can apply to any and all shooting and aiming styles.

nope, im just saying, as was stressed on the video, good form is good form, you can take it with you anywhere, nomatter if its "hill" style or not.  it teaches you to use good form, and after that is down, then you worry about the aiming method, or "style" of shooting.

Absolutely outstanding video! I also liked Pitsley's section of clicker use. I would have liked to see it go into more detail, but I'm just glad someone introduced the subject in a popular DVD. Just talking about them was huge, considering they're still somewhat taboo.

All in all, I thought the form info in MBB3 complimented the aiming tutorials from MBB2. Both of them combined make a perfect package that I wish was available back when I started shooting. I would have avoided a lot of mistakes early on.

That being the case, there was a lot of good information and drills in MBB3 I plan to implement into my own shooting routine. For example: I can't say I've ever done much blank or blind bale work. That will change shortly.

Thanks again to everyone involved in these DVD's. You all did a great job!

Just got mine today and I am very impressed.  I'll second McDave's comments about MBB III being a video I will watch several times.

I've enjoyed all of them with #I and #III being the best IMO.

I'd done some bale work and found it helpful and I'd always heard about back tension but these videos have really illuminated the principles into concrete ideas.  Tons of great tips on how to make these things a more prominate part of my practice routines.

Denny's comments about setting down and actually detailing out his form into a step by step process is something I haven't done since I first started.  It really helped to go back and revisit that idea.
Two solid bone anchor points, progressively buidling back tension, and the two sided roles of the brain (one form, the other aiming) are some great tips. If I can get one guy to focus on form and the other guy to just "BAMM".  I think my shooting will be improved.

Regardless when I went out and shot tonight and had a great time.

Thanks for all the help MMB gang!

Chris

Improving form is always a good thing.

MBB III is the meat-n-taters of the series--the best by far IMO (and I liked I and II).  I think it was a great idea for DSJ to put his segment in telling how, after all these years and all those dead critters, he was able to improve.

I've got to get a Formaster now...........

I was impressed by Rod and Larry.  Good stuff.  I've been working on my form and my target panic with very good results.  The Form-Master concept has really helped me with the target panic.  It's like it has changed the shot sequence parameters and as such bypassing the section that used to initiate the panic.

Nice work guys!  todd

I bought one to see if I could get help on my release...Come to find out,my problem is the same that Denny HAD..."Had" being the key word here..

My hand often flies out the same as where Denny shot the water buffalo...Thanks to the video I can see where I need to get to...

I thought that I only did it every now and then, but realized that I do it all the time, just some times are worse than others..Like what Denny said ,he could mostly keep fairly close to target by muscling the shot...Sometimes I don't though and the shot goes right or even left...

The buck in my avatar is proof of the problem...He has a big ol snuffer hole dead center in the white patch on his throat...Lethal shot, but that was NOT where I was aiming...  :banghead:    :banghead:

Probably the best money I have spent on archery in quite a while...

Oh Santiam, never say it wasn't where you were aiming!   ;)  Hey, with a beautiful buck like that blacktail I'd take it no matter where I shot it! I found that I was sometimes getting in a funk where I would "try" and make a "release" of the string by flinging my fingers off the string. Of course all that did was make me pluck the string and miss the mark! So, combining the hard 2 pt. anchor with continued back tension (still working on that) through conclusion has really helped.  Also, saying "BAMMM!!!" really has helped...ok, it hasn't helped...but it's fun!

Todd, that's awesome! You were already a killing machine. I'm scared now.  :)

Santiam, We are pleased that you enjoyed the show. Rod and Larry did a great job. No more shanks  :knothead:

Snag, BAMM!

This question is for Denny> I see that you shoot 90% four fletch. You don't see that much any more.Is your hunting set up 4 four inch 4 fletch. Your thoughts on this. Thanks

Hey Rod, Yes the last few years I've been hunting with 4, 4" feathers on 90 degrees. They seem to stabilize broadheads as good as 3 big feathers, but fly quieter, faster and they are more compact. My dad had me hunt with the same combo when I was a kid; so maybe it just feels right too.

I also can shoot the Bi-Delta 4" rainvanes 3 fletch off the shelf with cock feather up and they fly just as good or better. I like the 4 fletch better for nocking without checking the index though.

Just watched it last night , hats off boys. In my opinion the best one yet, the others were good but this one just sorta brought it all home for me, new stuff to play with as well, great job.

I've never seen these videos except for the trailers. I odered all three yesterday and wow my shooting is better already. Should be fantastic when they actually arrive and I get to watch them!

Seriously, I am looking forward to getting these videos and tuning up my style. The reviews have been a good incentive to purchase.
Thanks  all.

I have been shooting less then a year, and I thought I was a decent shooter, not good, but not bad either. After watching this video, nr III, I really got to understand backtension, and pulling with my back. The first day after watching it, and after an hour of blind bale, my arrows flew with a lot more determination and speed, and my bow feels like it has dropped in weight. Now I also enyoy blind bale training, and will make it a daily routine, now that I know what to do when training like that. Many thanks to you who has done it, and be ware Larry, you will have some competition in the world championchip in a couple of years  :)

I just got a copy of MBB3 from Emmily and now I have watched and learned from all three videos, but it's this year that I hope to have time to put some of it into practice. From years of treestand hunting in extremely cold weather with bulky cloths, I have developed a draw that uses mostly arms that pulls the string out away from my bow arm and chest and then settles back into my face and "soft anchor". I know that it has worked for me in the past, but experiencing some crucial errors during the past season and on the range has left me wanting to improve.
I have been working on my form and trying to allow my back and shoulders to carry more of the load at full draw. But now at the end of MBB3, I see where Denny has adopted a similar draw that I had in that pulling out so subtly away from the bow arm clearing the chest and then settling in to his rock solid anchor while shifting his final pull and follow through to his back muscles. I realize that what worked for me for decades wasn't all that bad. I only need to make sure that the final hold and anchor includes back tension, which as been described by Denny and others as a third anchor point.
If I work on that and a SOLID anchor on my face, I should be OK and avoid some of the mental breakdowns which have occurred to me lately.
I look forward to my renewed efforts and improving form. It may not matter to those shooting targets, but my hunting "responsibility can't be bought"! I must work harder to do better out of respect for the animals I love..
Thank you so much Denny and Darryl for bringing it all together for us. Mike

Just came in the mail today, looked at a bit of it, was suprised at how much Denny S. has changed his style from the video he did with Dan Bertalan. Total makeover...even hair, facial and other wise.....lol. So far it looks to be a good purchase...>>>---------> ron w

Markus77, LOL, we call that trash talkin' over here.
 :)
Seroiusly, I can remember Larrry, Ty and Rod all commenting that it was fun to compete with top level archers. Sure they want to beat your score, but they want to beat it when you are at your best; not because you aren't shooting well or having a bad day. Any of the masters would be thrilled to be outscored by someone they helped or coached. That's why they are champions in my book.

Mike, I hope you are getting along OK. I need to call you. Sitka gear sure makes it easier to get extra string clearance  :)

Ron,LOL a lot of water has went over the dam since then. One thing that hasn't changed is pull,Pull and keep pulling.

Rod and Larry really made MBB3 a great learning tool.

Denny, Yes I'm getting along. I plan to put some of that Sitka and those learning tools to a test soon in Manitoba for bear. Thanks!

I´m not sure what trash talking is. Is it like talking bull****?
I have much respect for the masters who made this dvd, but I sure want to win a world championship. And now I have a tool to get there.
Archery is of course much more than winning tournaments, but it´s fun to compete to. It´s not legal with bowhunting in Sweden yet. So we compete most of the time, even if some people travel to other countries to hunt. I will to that to when my kids gets older.

Where else can you buy a DVD then be included in the friendly banter as well as serious discussion of the contents with the guys who made it. Tradgang is truely the finest site on the net. To everyone involved in the filming of this video..my hat is off!!! MOBB3 far exceeds any other book or video I have ever read or seen on trad archery. A group of trad marksmen who are also friends making an instructional video of techniques that are proven...I just can't say enough.
Thanks Fellas,

Page....when I did MBB 1, I didn't know Denny or Darryl other than by reputation....we arrived at Denny's , shook hands and started shooting video! Fast forward a couple years and their both good friends, as well as guy's like Larry Yein, who since we shoot different tournaments and live on different sides of the county, our paths may have never crossed were it not for the MBB series...same goes for some of the other Masters! Traveling to tournaments and other trad events,I've made several friends who had watched MBB, introduced themselves and said hi, and I now look forward to seeing them again whenever I'm in the area.

In the end, the new friends made because of the Masters series, will always be the part about doing the videos, I will cherish most.
