Gary "Pop's" Kellar
May 3, 1947-March 22, 2009
Pop's died peacefully in his sleep after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was a friend to all Tradgangers who ever crossed his path. He'll be sorely missed by all who knew him. Rest in peace Pop's!
If anyone has a pic or two please post them. Thanks, CK

Curtis,
You and you family have my deepest condolences. I still laugh a little when I remember that night Charlie, you, Gary and I spent bowfishing. He was a good man. Spending those few hours on the boat with him was something I won't soon forget.

Pops will be missed by many and that is evidence of a life well spent. I would like to convey my sympathies and condolences to the Kellar family even though I always feel at a loss for the right words at these times. I lost my father several years ago, very suddenly, and even though I had just seen him two weeks before I felt cheated out of saying goodbye and seems as though there is unfinished business there still. Keep your goodbyes current with anyone you care about. Curtis, I am glad you had some time to come to grips with Pop's imminent passing to prepare for this day.
Regards, John Berger
Curtis,

I met Pop last year at Sweat, he made me feel like I was a part of his family, he walked up to me introduced him shelf shook my hand then gave me Texas hug and said welcome to Sweat. He really made me feel special. I killed my first big game at that hunt ( a pig ) he made me feel like a Movie Star. Pop you will be missed! Rest in Peace! Curtis you and your family will be in my prayers.

I posted this in the Sweat forum....now I'll share it here....
My all time favorite 'Camp Memory' was from the TX Sweat 2007 hunt. Tom Phillips and I had hunted together and taken a double on Angoras the first morning, and we were a couple of miles from the truck. It was hot, and I said something to Tom about how hot we'd be when we got back...and he replied "The beverages will just be that much colder"
When we got back to camp there wasn't anyone around as I unloaded my angora in front of the cabin I was staying in. I was down on one knee looking over my goat with sweat pouring off me when I heard out of the blue Gary Kellar say "Here ya go Sir"!....and I looked up to see Gary holding out a Tecate with a lime sticking out the top.
Tom was right, that Tecate was 32.1 degrees let me tell ya.
Guys N Gals...THAT was Mr Gary. Always right there with hospitality at hand.
Thanks for the memorys Mr Gary.... :campfire:

I never met the man, but can tell from his smile, I would have been a better person if I had.
May he forever hear the sound of a twinkling star, smell a flower bloom in the early spring, and taste the shade of a tall Texas tree.
Love ya,
Todd
My prayers are with you and your family.
Curtis,
I only met your Pop once, but he left a lasting impression. Great listener, even better story teller. I saw a man that was living his life to the fullest and thrilled to be spending quality time with friends around the campfire. Most of all Curtis, it was easy for us all to see how proud he was of you. Watching the two of you together videoing hunts, and shooting the bull around camp is one of my fondest memories of that hunt. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Curtis...
Andrew

Mike
Curtis,
I am sorry I just saw this tdoay. I am truly sorry for your loss. In my parts there is a saying that goes: The cattle die, your relatives die, and you to will one day die, but a mans reputation and honor live on forever. Judging from the responses here, he was a great man of honor and will live on forever. So I will raise a toast in his honor as well, though I did not meet him in this life.
D-
Curtis, I lost both of my parents to cancer. My Dad was only 53 when it took him so the time I had with him as an adult was limited. I have many memorys of hunting with him when I was young but not nearly as many as I would like to have had when I was older.
My Dad wasn't a bow hunter but he was very proud of my shooting and used to brag to his gun hunting friends about me.
Cherish the memories you have, they will sustain you until you meet again. God be with you in your time of grief.
Sorry for your loss Curtis.
Kris

This stuff is never easy. Cancer sucks! You are a very blessed man to have a father like you had. We lost our Mom to breast cancer at 50 years-old last year. It is still hard. We just concentrate on living a life to honor her. She left a high mark for us to hit each day. From what I've read, your Dad was the same way. Will be praying for you and your family.
Katie
Prayers and condolences for you and your family C.K.
Prayers and condolences from Alabama. I am sorry for you loss.
Curtis
Pops was the kind of man that became a friend just upon meeting him. I certain enjoyed the few moments we had together one-on-one...fishing, walking, talking about family. He was so proud of you and your accomplishments. Peace to you and your family
We were both born the same year...kind of added an extra bond to what we had seen in those years. Gary save a place at the campfire...Doc
Finally able to face this thread: Pops will be painfully missed; I will miss our frequent conversations and his ever cheerful "Reverend doctor Coots!" greeting till I go to meet him.
Every time I have a dressed Tecate, I'll smile and think of you Pops. We'll thump some rabbits again someday...and I hear the fishing is good on the river Jordan.
Love you Curtis, we are praying for you, Miss Lulu and all those touched by his memory.
Curtis,
I didn't know you dad any way but through the stories posted here. I'm sorry for your loss.

Thanks again to all who've posted. The prayers and great stories have been well received. The photo's of the great times we've all had with Dad have brought a big smile to my face. Thanks! CK
:campfire:
One of my favorite stories told to me by Gary was about a turkey hunt. He and some pals had spotted a roost site for a flock of Thanksgiving dinners. They talked it over and had several adult beverages as the plan came together. At dusk they attacked with shotguns from all sides. Gary said he knocked one down but it ran off wounded with him in chase. He ran out of shells during the running battle and moved in for the hand to hand finish. The big tom turned on him and the fight was on. Gary said he ended up in the fetal position with his arms protecting his head as the victorious tom strutted off leaving him beaten and bruised.
Not a big man physically, but humility and heart of extra large. Texas will seem smaller without him.
There is little I can say except I am sorry for your loss. Just keep in mind, as the sun shines on you each day, its "Pops" smiling down on you. Peace to you and you family. Though I never have, it sounds like I would have been a better person from meeting him.

My deepest sympathies to you and yours, Curtis.

Did not know the man, sounds like it was my loss. Blessings upon you and your family at this time. Really love what JC said in his post.
Now, one of my great regrets in life, never having met Mr. Keller. I put off my St Judes hunt w/Curtis and now it will be lessened by Mr. Keller's absence.
My deepest condolences.
You have my deepest sympathies CK.
I only talked to Pops once and regret not being able to shake hands and share a campfire with him.
Just wanted to send my sympathy and prayers to the Kellar family. Memories are what keeps our spirit alive and judging by the response here your father will not soon be forgotten.
Mike
Sorry to hear of your loss Curtis. Tough times, I know. Your Dad was an inspiration to me since meeting you guys a couple of years ago. He will be long remembered.

Hey Curtis....sorry to hear about your Pop. :(
I spent some good times with, Gary "Don't call me Mr Kellar" Kellar. I remember sneaking around a tank in the dark all night with Pops, shooting frogs while he was holding a flashlight and filling a burlap bag full of good eats. We also spent some time trying to film a Javelina kill with no success but I can still recall the great conversation we had. Hope your family is well and we will keep you in our prayers. Take care!
Curtis,so sorry for your loss,as with my own Fathers passing it was hard but I know he's still with me as I'm sure Pops is still with you, prayers sent from alabama.
