I'm looking for suggestions on where to find a good head for stump shooting; preferable one that won't get lost in the grass. I need glue on points at or near 160 gr.
The problem is that I usually shoot 160 gr heads but I can't find any good stump shooting points in that weight. I love judo's, but for glue on the bigest I can get is 135.
I've thought about trying to add weight to my judos but haven't tried it yet. Any one have any suggestions.

look at the ace hex head, 160 grain glue-on
Ace makes a 160-grain Hex Head. $9.99 for six direct from the manufacturer. They only charge about a buck or so to ship them too.

Looks like Sleepyhollow beat me to it. ;)
might also try the hammer heads from 3 rivers.
I'm for the Ace Hex blunt also. I do use the Judo some though. Frank
Hex heads or Hammers for me. A lot easier to remove from the stump.
One that won't get lost...purchase some Zwicky Scorpio heads, slide them over your taper then hot melt on your 160 grain field pts. The Scorpio will act like the Judo in helping to slow down the arrow and keep from burying in the grass.
I agree with Joe on this one. I just got a couple of packs from 3 Rivers, they're cheap enough. Just haven't tried 'em yet.......
Good luck..
I just ordered the 200 hex heads though haven't shot them yet. I decided to go that route because I'll be shooting the 125 Woodsman's with 75gr. woody weights this fall, allowing me to match weights.
Cut a 12 gauge shell with #8 shot in it and using a digital scale add enough shot to get to the weight you want. Then safely discard the cut shell. The scales can be found for $20-25.
Hammer heads from 3 Rivers are great and come in heavy weights

never had a problem with hex or hammers snaking under grass
Joe has the solution.
Hex heads.
hex heads, hammer heads and judos!! they all work great and have there place in my back quiver!! :archer:
since I loose a lot of my heads, I started using a 38 special shell casings over an old shaft with a spiral fletch
i looked into the scorpios and aside from saying they're not for use on woodies, they weigh 20 gr a piece. I'd have to find 140gr field tips if I went that rout.
I've used the 357 casings and lead shot before. They work great for a blunt, but I'm looking for something that grabs a little better.
I think I'll try the hex heads. For the guys that have used them, how do they perform as compared to judos and regular steel blunts?
ch
For me they are better than a Judo as they last and last. Short of loosing one, they are indestructable. The judos seem to always fall apart after a while.

Regular steel blunts? There's absolutely no comparison. Regular steel blunts will skip and deflect while stump shooting (and on small game too). Hex Heads grab, catch, and stop.
As a bonus, you can resharped the concave face of a Hex Head with a 1/2" drill bit. Bob Mayo told me that trick years ago and it works extremely well. You can bang them all to heck stump shooting in rocks, touch them up with a drill bit, and be ready for small game.
Sounds good Jason, I'm put'n in an order.
Thanks guys.

ok, I just checked 3 rivers and neither the hex head or the hammer come in 160gr. Am I missing something or can I get them in 160 from another dealer?
call Mike Horton @ the Nocking Point (Sponsor List) He's got the 160gr Hex Heads
Hex hads are awesome, Like Bob said, Yu can sharpen them and get the heavy weights. Call Bob at Ace he has what ever you need.

ace hex blunt without a doubt for me the best stumping head!
iv had some for 4 years now and they are still going strong.
My absolute favorite stumping head is a combination made with my absolute favorite small game head. I hunt small game with the old Tiger Claw which is an odd shaped blunt that has a razor cap held into place with a machine screw. With the machine screw and razor cap removed, the steel blunt weighs 85 grains. This blunt is designed to perfectly fit inside a 100 grain Bludgeon. I use a razor knife to cut v-notches between the ribs on the face of the Bludgeon which increases shock power on rabbits and helps to prevent the head from snaking while stumping. The modified Bludgeon weighs 90 grains and when placed over the Tiger Claw blunt, the total weight in approx 175 grains. This is the same weight as a modified 190 Grizzly. The modified Grizzly, the Tiger Claw, and the Tiger Claw w/ the modified Bludgeon all fly to the same POI. They cover all my hunting needs.

I was thinking that with all the plugs for hex heads, I was not needed here. I was wrong. Clay, you're missing something. Somebody posted this link on page one of this thread...
Ace Hex heads, all sizes! (http://www.bowsite2.com/aceshopping/product1.asp?SID=2&Product_ID=13)
Now, go there!
Killdeer :p
Clay, I've shortened my taper & added split shot to get 160gr. out of my 145gr. Eclipse might work for judos.
I have had pretty good luck with the Ace Hex in 160. Durable and grab pretty well as everyone has said.
Also, a 100 grain steel blunt with a 70 grain rubber blunt slipped over the top gets you close and you can always shave a few grains off the rubber. I have never had a rubber blunt slide under the grass more than 1/3 arrow length.
For adjusting judo points to 160 I add a bullet weight (for rigging a rubber worm) into the head. Check the sinker rack at your local fishing supply. I have found the 1/16 oz. size to run from 27 grains to 31 grains. The little chunk of wood that I cut to shorten the point taper runs about 1.5 grains, so tip weight is 160 to 165 grains. Be aware, however, that by shortening the wood taper you have less arrow surface to glue in. I have found that the judos pop off easier when I hit a rock with this system, at least with Fletch-Tite hot melt.
All this allows me to shoot field points, rubber blunts, judos, hex heads and broadheads that are matched pretty well around 160 grains.
I would have suggested the hammer as that is my favorite head but is only available in a screw in as far as I know
I shoot the 135 g. judos and 160 g. snuffers. I can't tell a difference in the impact point at hunting range. I think the additional air resistance of the judo compensates.
thanks everyone, I went to the Ace website and ordered from there. Can't wait to get them.
Just received my 200 hex heads yesterday and they're great!
