Title: bow for a newbie
Post by: runamuk on March 16, 2009, 10:06:00 PM
My good buddy and hunting pard.. of 30 years is gonna give up his wheel bow and wants to start shooting trad.
i would like to buy him his first real bow.
so my question is,, what would be a good starter bow for him?? he is in great shape and is purty dang stout. I started out with a 60# bow and was to stubburn to drop in poundage,, as you folks well know thats a big mistake. i sure don't want him to go through that..
any advice about the whole process would be much appreciated..

Any idea of his draw length? 45# is about the max I'd recommend for a starter. A take-down would be a good idea so he can get new limbs as he develops his "archery" muscles.

I would sure check in the used bow section and go with something in the light range.  (like Vermonster said -about 45 or so).  Don't spend too much as he may want to upgrade in a few months and make his first bow his backup bow.

vermonster13,, i would guess 27" on the draw lenghth, 28" max..That's a great idea on the takedown, i know for a fact that he will want a TD cuz he has seen all the trouble i have gone through with my one piece bows,, I now have a beautiful new 2 pc bow from fox archery and that has sure made life much more simple..

Horne Shooter ,, yea i have been going through the used bow section,,BAD IDEA!!! I have found about 6 bows that i want for MYSELF.... I know i am going to end up with at least one of em..
DAAAANG!!!!
lots of 50 pounders there,,, if his draw length is 27" and i find a bow 50# @ 28" would that one inch difference be enough to bring it down to the mid to high fortys???

I started with a 55# and that was a bit stout. I was SORE as heck with all thos muscles I found. I ended up moving to a 50# and it's working out much better. It's actually 50# @ 28", but I'm a 27" draw. I'm shooting about 47# or so.

Samick makes good bows for the money. $300 should get you one new. Check them out and keep your eyes peeled in the classifieds.

WELCOME!
