This thread is dedicated to the hunting adventures of Hope and Faith.
Hope and Faith will be traveling around the US hunting with various Trad Gangers for the next year, and then they will be auctioned off on our annual St. Jude's Auction to complete the commitment of Hope, Faith, and Charity.
A special thanks to Mark and Sandy Horne of Horne's Archery for donating the bows, and to Craig Warren for donating the Bow Bolt take down systems.
Check back often to read up on the gal's travels.

I must say that it was quite an honor to be the second guy to hunt with "Hope". I didn't make any big game kills but accumilated several bunnies with the bow. It seems very odd to be able to pick up a bow and shoot lights out right off the bat. What a georgeous pair of sweet shootin twins The Hornes have created!!!! Thanks for the opportunity to hunt with the bow. CK
(DAY 1)
The second day of hunting with the bow was extra special because I finally got to share in the hunt with Curt Cabrera. It had been a long time comming and will be a special memory for many years to come. Thanks Curt!

Nice shooting guys! Looks like a great time was had by all except the bunnies. They certainly are great looking bows, too!
-
Between CK, Guru and the coyotes and bobcats, how can there possibly be a bunny left on that ranch? LOL
-
My Goodness what beautiful bows :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: .....Van
-
Guys these bows are even prettier in person!!! I got to shoot "Faith" for a while, and had I found some arra's that would have worked,I'd of had her out hunting in a heartbeat!!!
"Rabbitman" and I were the only lefties in camp, and though I think Dick did shoot at a rabbit with her...she remains "bloodless".....who will be the first????
I'm looking forward to my time with her this October!!
CK, Your right bud,way overdue, but certainly worth the wait......It was an honor to finally hunt with you my friend :notworthy: .....we'll do it again!!!
-
Thumps up to Horne's Archery and Warren Archery for these beautifull twin bows. I did shoot a rabbit with the lefty, Faith, but never recovered it or my blunt. The last I saw of the two of them, they were traveling very fast together through the catcus. CK did tell me these south Texas rabbits were too tough for anything but broadheads...so I'll have to give him that one.
Hot Dog....The bows are both 60" in length and marked 52#@28".
Great hunt with a great bunch of guys! Wish you could have been with us Mick.
-
Wow Mark sure makes some beautiful bows, don't he? I'm looking forward to the Brush Bow I have on order even more now.
I went with black glass over carbon/bamboo but those Bacote lams are outstanding.
-
DiamondD, I've got a brush bow and you won't be disapointed. I've also got dibbs on "Hope" in October. Now if I'm only able to find a sucidal deer or turkey during that time, I'll be in business!
Claudia
-
As Curtis said, he was the second one to hunt with "Hope" as I got first dibs on her. Me getting to hunt with her first was strickly out of necessity. I was the first one to fly into San Antonio, arriving around 0930 am and had to wait an hour or so for Dick and Chad to land from their connection through Memphis. After de-planing, I went down to baggage claim to pick up my bags, one duffle with clothes and necessities and my Hoppes arrow box with both my Morrisons, arrows, broadheads, etc. I had brought two bows just in case one of the other hunters was unlucky enough to have their bow not make it as I had heard horror stories about the airlines loosing hunting gear along with regular baggage. Well, I would have never thought in a million years that it would be me that it happened to. As I watched the carousel, I first spotted my duffle and retrieved it. Then,.... waiting, waiting,..... waiting..... and nothing. I went over to the baggage claim desk and talked to the rep there who said that he would go in the back and get my case for me since they usually didn't put those types of items on the carousel. When he came back out without my case, well you can imagine. It turns out that even though I checked the arrow case at the same time that I checked my duffle, the arrow case ended up in Chattanooga, Tenn. Lucky for me that Mark and Sandy Horne had done a great job at getting both Hope and Faith completed and delivered to Curtis in time for the hunt. So, just by necessity, I had the priviledge of bringing First Blood.
-
Terry, the knives were sent out Express today (what a nightmare that was). You should have them in your hands tomorrow. For the rest of you:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v212/fliksr/More%20Knives/rovergalcompanions1.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v212/fliksr/More%20Knives/rovergalcompanions2.jpg)
I took a page out of Doug Campbell's book and made the sheaths cross-draw with an internal leather "lock" - just twist the handle and pull to get the knife out.
-
Thanks....they are gonna be ready by the end of the week!!!!!
T
-
Jeremy, those are too pretty to get blood on :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: ....Van
-
Very nice knives! Are you selling these?
-
wow! I love that lefty!!!!!!!!so cool guys!! marco#78 SWEET!!!!!!! :D :wavey:
-
The first time "Hope" went out in the field was Friday evening. I was paired up with Dick Easter and we hunted an area of the ranch that had a couple of low lying spots that looked right for game. There were lots of sign, but to make a long story short, no dice. We saw one nice size hog and one javie shortly after the hog but they were too far away to stalk. Both just crossed the sendero and disappeared into the prickly pear. As the day came to a close, we started seeing cottontails come out on the sendero and with a borrowed ace hex tipped cedar, I took my shot. Here is the result.

-
Nice shooting Bob....really enjoyed spending time with you on the ranch and at the airport. Till the next hunt my friend.
-
The gals are off to a great start.....the Laguna Ranch is as good a place as any to break them in.
-
I got the knives from Jeremy!!!..and they look GREAT!!!...Got the arm guards from Art and they are beautiful!!!
Thanks!!!!!!
Faith will be going out tomorrow to Danny Spencer.
Thanks to all that have contributed to this effort :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:
-
Bob, looks like that wabbit was trapped by a high fence :p :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: ....Van
-
Curtis, are you wearing snake boots in that photo??
-
Van, He had the option of climbing it and not gettin shot!
-
He made the wrong choice :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: ...Van
-
What a great start for both of these bows! I expect them to be bloodied many more times before my chance comes, and look forward to seeing the stories here.
David
-
The bow will be in its sock...and the matching knife is slid in the arm guard.
-
Wow! What a great looking package.
Terry, I'd like to remind all the participants that the Bow Bolt is machined to very fine tolerances (.ooo5" at some points) and making sure it is completely clean before assembly is very important.
Thanks,
Craig
-
Craig..I will have FAITH at the poke and hope this year..hope to get a picture with you holding the bow...Art
Terry..that is a great lookin package
-
Hey Terry,
You threw me off for a few minutes,, I read the second thread first and then the origional thread, this one.. At first, I thought 2 gals were headed around the country hunting with different Trad. Gangers. I thought that was pretty neat, however, when i got to the part about them being autioned off next year, I got as excited as a 59 year old can get..... I thought this archery thing reall does bring folks closer together!!!!!!
Now that I'm all straightened out, Mark and Sandy, those are beautiful bows and how nice of you folks to send them on such a journey..
Mr. Walker, I do indeed like your hat!!! Jim

That's just wrong!
-
That is one beautiful package!!! Great job putting it all together. The only thing I see that may be missing is a box of excuses for misses. :D
I am all ready thinking about set ups for next Spring when Miss Faith and I will will try to seduce an old tom into shooting range. Come on April!!!
Thanks to all for each one's part in making this happen. Awesome idea!

-
Wow this is going to be an honor. I'll have to get some special arrows for this, mine aren't pretty enough for these lady's.
I think 2114's with either 125 or 150 grain heads ought to fly true? What do you think?
Jerry
-
Looky what UPS brought me!!!

What's even better is what was inside:

I had just made up a batch of arrows for my Crusader, so I figured I would see how close they were.....GoldTip 55/75 - 29" - 100 grain insert - 125 grain point - They fly pretty good and other than the one flyer, not a bad 20 yard group for the first time to shoot the little lady  :archer:
I'm gonna have to wait till Thursday AM to sneak off for my week long hunt, but I think this little gal and me are gonna work out VERY well together!!
-
That's class :wavey:  ...Van
-
Doggone Danny, looks like you and Miss Faith were made for each other. ;) Real nice shootin' bud!!!
-
Is the schedule full for the right handed lady this year? I would love to spend a while with her this year if she has any available dates.
-
Well, Faith and I went to see if we could find a few rabbits this morning, and to make sure all my hunting gear was ready for the long week of "serious" hunting that we will be doing starting tomorrow......
I was hoping that I could get a shot or two at some rabbits so that I could get some mojo going with little Faith.....it wasn't long before I saw two jackrabbits sitting about 75 yards ahead of me, so just for fun I decided to see if I could sneak up on them (anybody that's ever tried that knows it ain't easy :banghead:  .....
I got a few shots at some cottontails, but soon ran out of time, I have WAY too much stuff to do to get ready for my "real" hunt, but all in all a beautiful morning spent with a very nice bow and getting her off to a very good start!
-
I can feel the mojo flowing all the way from Texas! :D
-
These two bows are natural born bunny killers. The rabbits at Shawn's place must be getting shivers as we speak and are wondering why. LOL
-
Wylee, with a 20 yard group like you got with Faith I would expect nothing less than a dead jackrabbit. :bigsmyl:
Good shootin', again!!!
Can hardly wait for your "Real Hunt" reports. ;)
-
:bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:
-
I just edited the original post on this thread listing the schedule of hunters.
-
Terry,
I would like to take have a date with HOPE in May. As it can take a while for stuff to get up here to Canada, would it be possible to have the last person scheduled now to ship it up here USPS Priority (Which can take 2 weeks) and I would get to hunt with her for the last two weeks of Bear Season. I could then Ship it to the Winning Bidder after the auction. If this is not possible, I understand, but I thought I would throw the idea out there.
Thanks,
Brian
-
Carbon Caster....if you are talking about Joel Smith shipping you the bow around April 16th and you hunting with it the 1st 2 weeks in May...I would LOVE for you to take Hope bear hunting!!!..so long as it get to Brian Roness in time.
-
:wavey:    ....Van
-
I think we can make that work--she should have killed a couple of turkeys by then and maybe a hog
-
Terry,
I was looking at Faith's Schedule instead of Hope's. That plan would work great though. I can get stuff to the States Rather quickly, but it is getting it here that takes forever.
Joel,
If that schedule is OK with Terry, get with me closer to the time and I will get you my address and shipping instructions. I will be moving before then, I HOPE! LOL!!! That will be a perfect time to take her Bear hunting.
Thanks guys,
Brian
-
Brian,
I added you to the schedule.
-
Good luck Brian :bigsmyl: ...Van
-
THANKS!!!!!!!
I hope I can get her good and stinky with Bear Blood!!!!
-
Hope has arrived in Montana, very nice!! Updates later, now to bed.
-
Well my first date with Hope was a short one but pretty rewarding. If you look at the pic you can see the grass is laying over. Tween the wind, rain and shy gophers we were only out about 15 minutes. I started in the barn and shot four times and was pretty satisfied with the way the AD Trad Hunters were flying.
Very nice work Mark and everybody that contributed to this effort! I like the bow bolt too.
The first dead gopher was my second shot and the next one came a few minutes later. When my last 20 yard shot hit almost sidewise I figured it was time to go to the shop and get something done. More later....
-
Real nice pic :wavey: ...Van
-
Now there's a real cowboy playing indian!
Nice work in short order...the gals have got it going on!!!
-
Look at dat fancy smanchy Roughcountry stamped leather bracer on that arm! Dang! Hmmm...seems to me that a dang whole posse' of gangers was ridin herd with you out there on that signed St. Jude's Bracer, Hoss!
-
Great pic, Doug. Kinda reminds me of when I was youngster and wound up on a bucking horse that tossed me up on the horn of the saddle just before flipping me over and landing me about that same way, fetched up against the riding ring fence. I kinda had a look like that on my face too, according to the Boss, and my shirt was suddenly soaked with sweat - but for a different reason/feeling
Hat was still on my head though
.
Pretty bow ya got there, along with that bracer.
-
Well, me and Faith got back from a HOT week of hunting down in the Terlingua (near Big Bend National Park) and Davis Mountains in far West Texas......
Here's where I camped for 4 days/3nights in Terlingua, did I say it was hot?
I spent most of the days scoping the area for javelina.....haven't seen one yet :(
Although I did find this place that looked like it had pretty good "sign" that I might find one here....but some little fellar on a burro came by and told me that I would have to get off his place because it just didn't look right havin' someone sitting there with a bow and a quiver full of arrows and I was scarin' off all his customers
The rest of the time I spent trying to find a little shade or somewhere out of the sun and do a little varmint calling. I use a Western Rivers electonic caller with a remote, works really good to keep the critters attention away from me and on the call....
I had already called in a couple of foxes when I heard something behind me. I turned and looked and had another fox coming down the rocks straight towards me....I stood up and turned to get a shot at him when he turned like he was going to run....Instead of running though he turned towards me again. I shot him at about 10 or 12 yards with him coming straight towards me. The arrow went in right behind his right front shoulder and came out right in front of his left rear leg.
He ran back up the rocks and disappeared with my arrow....I heard a lot of clicking and thought it was the arrow on the rocks rattling around...
I waited about 15 minutes to give him a little time to calm down and went looking for him....
When I found the arrow, I realized that the "clicking" sound I had heard was this little fella chewing on my arrow to get it out!!!
I had a very good blood trail...
-
....thank goodness for the blood trail, because I would have never seen him in the thicket that he ran into...
I put a 38 special through his neck and got him pulled out and Faith had taken another trophy for her mantle!!! The blood on his rear leg was where the arrow came out and he pulled the arrow through...
After 4 days there, I headed to the Davis Mountains and hoped for a javelina or two from there, but had no luck.....did some more calling but Faith drew no more blood on this trip.....
All total (that I saw) I had 12 foxes and 2 coyotes come in and work around the call, but only two of them got close enough for a shot and the second one got a little hair cut off his tail but is otherwise still on the mountain!!
It was a beautiful week with tons of things to see and enjoy....
but as usual all good things must end.....
I hope to get a few more rabbits and maybe some more chances at varmints here close to home before I have to send her on her way to the next lucky lefty!!!
 :archer:
-
Great story and pics Danny. You had fun and made memories. That's what it's all about :wavey:   ....Van
-
Excellent Danny. Thanks for sharing!
-
Thanks Danny, loved the pics and story.
-
Awesome pics and story, Danny.
-
Yes sir Danny, enjoyed it!!
Took Hope out for a bit agian this afternoon and thumped a couple more gophers. She's a sweet shooter for sure!
-
A FOX!!!!.....now that's a dandy animal to take with Faith....I'm sure a javie will come down the road sometime...but a fox!!!.....what a bonus!
Congrats!!!!!
-
Got up early on this gorgeous Father's Day and decided to take Hope for a walk. This is the first day it hasn't been raining or very windy or something wrong since I recieved Hope. This is one sweet shootin bow and here's an hours worth of gophers to proove it. Thanks for the opportunity Terry.
That's 14 gophers she's accounted for now, bet my pile of gophers weighs almost as much as your fox Danny :D
-
That's awesome Doug!!! That fox was a much bigger target...and I didn't have to hit it 14 times either!!! Very impressive shooting!!! :help:
These Gals have got the huntin' mojo down for sure!!! Can't wait to see what they score on in the future! :campfire: :archer:
-
That lefty looks like awesome bow, marco#78..
-
That's pretty impressive Doug, great shooting!
That fox is a great trophy Danny, way to go! These bows are making their mark pretty early in the game, aren't they?
David
-
Thanks guys, pretty easy with a bow like this, Hope is on her way to visit Ray Hammond for a Ray and Knife River hog hunt. Now there'll be something to write a story about!
-
These stories are awesome and they sure do showcase the fine shooting of our TradGangers as well as those pretty bows! Way to go, guys!
Claudia
-
Doug, Danny, mighty good shootin' for sure! These kind of stories and pic's will have me really fired up by the time Faith gets here next Spring, as if I need getting fired up. ;)
-
Well, I took Faith out for a final "walk" today....dang, I'm gonna miss this little Gal!!
My oldest son wanted to go bowfishing, so I agreed to meet up with him out at our favorite bowfishin' spot.....
I intentionally got out there about an hour early so I could do a little walkin' around and see if me and Faith could scare up a rabbit or two.....
There weren't a lot of them moving around and the ones that were were REALLY movin'!!! But I did manage to get a cottontail to hold still just long enough!! :D
(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a365/yleecoyote23/7LakesLongbowBuild011.jpg)
So now it's time for me to get her all packed up and sent on the the next lucky lefty on the list!!! :( It's been a BLAST!!!
But at least I managed to get a lot of hunting done with her despite not having anything besides varmints and little critters to hunt for!!
Final Faith Tally for June:
1 Fox
1 Jack Rabbit
1 Cottontail
1 HAPPY, but wore out yleecoyote23!!!!
-
You sure are right Claudia. These guys are some kind of shots!
Thanks for sharing!
-
Saweeet! Hadn't checked this in a while and find all sorts of good stories hapenin!
Would ya look at all them gophers with blood on their HEAD :readit: I don't ever wanna hear you complainin about your shootin again, Mr. Cambell....sir.... :D
-
Well, Faith is officially on her way to visit Art (Razorbak) George in New Hampshire!!! :(
Amazin' how attached ya can get to something!!!
UPS Guy said you should have her sometime on Wednesday Art!!!
Good Luck!!! :campfire: :archer:
-
Dang, I've not read this thread in awhile and you guys have been busy. Congrats Danny and Doug. Great shooting guys! CK
-
The beginnings of the medicine bags are here. I've received a bit from Danny and one from Doug. So just a reminder to the rest of you folks as the bows pass around.
Thanks,
Dave
-
I see Ray's back in town....any adventurous tales Ray?
Groupies anxiously awaiting the next installment...
-
Sorry, guys
I got the bow from Dougie on Thursday..went hunting Friday through Tuesday with Knife River.
I got down to the property late on Friday and set the bow up. My goodness what a beautiful bow.
I made a mistake, though. I cannot shoot a longbow grip and should have known better! I tried, and tried, and tried..and could not get a decent three arrow group with the bow.
For that reason, I decided that I could NOT shoot at an animal with the bow as much as I would have liked to. I played with it all weekend and Monday as well, but just could not make it work to the point I felt justified in using it so I put her back in the case and Friday morning she is going back to Mark Horne, who wants to check the bow out- and he will forward on in time to the next person.
Sorry fellas for wasting Hope's time coming here when she could have gone to someone else. I apologize.
-
Ray,
I know you gave here every effort...but gotta also commend you for knowing when and where to draw the line buddy. :notworthy:
-
I watched Ray work with the bow. The man really poured his heart into it, but as beautiful as Hope is, it just isn't meant for everyone. No doubt the hogs were relieved... LOL Give Ray a recurve grip, though, and stand back for lessons from a real shooter!
-
Ray, what Terry said :wavey:   ...Van
-
Thanks, Terry, Knife, and Van. Looks like Littlefeather got to bloody her up on a goat, though...so that was neat!
-
New here but how does a fella get on the list for old faith, she's the lefty correct? Got some tree rats that need thinned out a bit.
-
buks2hunt...check the first page of this thread. There is a user list for each bow. There are some openings for Faith. If any of those openings fit your schedule, pm or email Terry Green.
-
I have been enjoying this discussion a great deal---thank you one and all.
-
Any folks who have hunted the bows, please don't forget the ST. Judes Medicine bags. I have one piece from each bow at this point.
-
Sorry, I forgot to post here about shooting Hope. Recently I went on a goat hunt to west Texas where Mark Horne was along too. Mark just happened to have short term possession of "Hope" and asked if I wanted another shot at hunting with her. I graciously accepted the opportunity and hunted one morning hunt with her. I landed a good shot on a porcupine and rather large Taxidermy bill. For most guys a porcupine is something to leave alone. For me it was a really neet trophy for my mantle. I've never seen another porcupine in Texas. Maybe I should get out more! Thanks to all associated with this project for allowing me the opportunity to help breath some MOJO into the bow. CK
(http://www.tradgang.com/upload/ck/CKPORCUPINE.jpg)
-
so I guess you sent a quill for the Medicine bag?
-
Yep Curtis,
They are in Texas. When I was a kid I killed one over around Ozona while deer hunting on my friends ranch. That was more years ago than I want to admit, but they are around. Neat trophy.
Danny
-
Yes Sir, we sure have em all over this area....
Just be careful when there is one ran over in the road....them hollow quills will do a number on your tires!!! That's what I hear, I have never witnessed it though....
That will be a neat mount Curtis, bet your taxidermest will love ya by the time he gets done!!! OUCH!!!
-
Have tried for a week to get ahold of Terry if anyone else has an idea it would be appreciated. Just trying to find out what i need to do to get on the list for Faith.
Thanks,
Bill

Subject: Re: A Little Time With Faith
I got two inquiries for the lefty...yours was the 2nd......could you use the bow the 2nd two weeks if he want's the 1st two weeks of August?
Also, what is your member number?
Terry
-
Nice trophy, Actually where i come from up northern Ny, It is kind of a unwritten rule to not shoot porky's. The name Adirondack from the Adirondack mountains is, I believe an old Iroquois word ( I am pretty sure it is Iroquois, adkken might be able to verify that) that means Bark eater or porcuipine. This was because if one were to get lost in the deep woods, the one animal that a man can always run down and kill to stay alive is the porky.......
Or at least thats what i'm told ;)
-
Hasn't been much going on in here. Where are the girls now?
-
The last time I looked there was not anyone scheduled for Faith in August. Hope only had one shooter for all of July and August.
I expect things will be picking up real soon now. :)
-
I was hoping to hunt w/ Faith the last two weeks of August but haven't heard back in weeks. Does anyone know what the status is?
Todd
-
Todd,
I've been getting your emails and replying...but you are not getting my replies. I don't have a clue why...as they are not getting returned.
-
Terry,
I got a couple replies the last of which was on the 10th of August saying you were looking into it. You can email me at either [email protected] or [email protected] I've had no problems w/ either one that I know of.
Thanks
Todd
-
No worries......we'll get you 1st dibs next year.
-
Well Faith came knocking at my door today. She is a sweet looking bow. I love how she fits in my hand. The bow bolt is super slick. Looks and works better then you could imagine. You guys really put together an awesome package. Dang that knife is sharper then it looks and it looks sharp. Everything is first rate. I hope my schedule lets up a bit so I can get out with her but I guess I need use some faith regarding that too.
-
Good Luck BenBow!!! Ol' Faith will treat ya right!!! And be sure and send Vermonster13 a little something for the medicine bag when you are done with her!!
-
(http://myweb.cableone.net/galnmax/faith1.jpg)
My schedule is so full I didn't think I could get out but my wife's sister has been here for a few days. I had to get out for some peace & quiet. I drove out to the west mesa to do some cactus shooting and ended up doing some small game hunting. All game was shot under 17 1/3 yards.
First one was a perfect double lung shot and he dropped right where he stood. Not quite book but nice just the same. The second was another double lung shot which I thought was pretty good considering the shot angle. I think this is a young one so should be good eating
First kill.

Second kill

Feeling much better now!

BenBow, you rock :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: ...Van
-
BenBow, glad to see your getting out with Faith a little, but I can't wait till you ship her back out! :)
The deer are scouted, broadheads are sharpened, and I'm chompin' at the bit to introduce her to some Maryland whitetails! WOO HOOO :)
-
bbassi if you don't mind I will ship her to you early. I'm not going to get out anytime soon so you just as well put her to good use.
-
Mind? HECK NO I don't mind! But don't send her until you have to if there is any chance of you getting out again before the 15th. I don't want to denigh you your time with it. My hunt isn't going to start until the 19th or 20th. Well, I guess I could shoot some squirells with it until then.... :)
-
Big suprise when I came home for lunch today, UPS met me with Hope at my front door. I just got home, it's dark and raining so I'll have to wait to set up and shoot her, but the good news is she will be hunting in the next day or so! I'll keep you all posted......
David
-
Well Faith and I are off to make meat tomorrow morning! She arrived here last Friday and we spent the weekend getting aquinted. :) She sure is a beauty. I was a little unsure at first because I've never hunted with a bow under 50# at my draw, but after shooting her I have no doubt she can "get-r-done".
I have 4 1/2 day, 2 farms plus state land, and unlimited tags for beautiful Montgomery Co. Maryland so God wiling I'll show old Faith what she was made for. Wish me luck!
-
Good Luck  .....Van
-
Good luck Brent, I'll have Hope out a couple of times this week and then Jeremy and I will be in the Great North Woods of New Hampshire for the weekend with her....
David
-
Good luck David.
Preparing for my time with Hope in December. Can some past participants tell me if 2114's with a 125g tip fly well out of the bow? If not, what will fly true? I just want to be prepared when she comes to town.
Jerry
-
Well, as hard as I tried, I wasn't able to connect with Faith on my hunt in Maryland. She and I saw over 60 deer in 4 days, but wind, thermals, and just my lack of knowledge about the area I was hunting combined to leave us without meat. The closest deer we saw were at 3 steps off my left shoulder one morning (of course I'm a lefty), and we actually spotted a pie ball fawn on 2 occasions.
Since I was hunting alone I don't have any pictures of me, but here's one of Faith waiting patiently in one of my favorite ground blinds. I've taken bucks from this blind the last 2 years and I sorely wanted a hat trick with Faith, but it just wasn't meant to be.
I really want to thank Terry and the Horne’s for making this all possible. That brush bow is a sweet little shooter and very pretty. I'll be mailing it on a little early to the next lucky hunter. Hopefully they will have slightly better luck than I did.
-
Miss Hope should be arriving in Kentucky soon and I've staked out some whitetails with her name on them! Of course, I've already taken it upon myself to thin the herd of one of the dry does with my favorite Widow, but it hasn't seemed to negatively effect the rest. They come through that clover field just like clockwork :D . Now I just have to lucky!
Claudia
-
should say "get" lucky...!
-
I'll be sending Hope out to you on Thursday Claudia, meanwhile here she is contemplating what kind of moose caused this damage....
David
-
And here I am with her by a bog in far northern New Hampshire.....
You'll have her soon Claudia....I have a couple of more hunts left with her first....
David
-
Beautiful country!!!!! GREAT looking bow!!!!!
As for the guy holding her, Well.....
-
David,
I hope you kill a brute with the old gal! I'll see her soon enough and will definately look forward to following in the footsteps of so many dedicated archers when I take her afield. One thing is for sure, this bow is going to have some serious mojo!
Claudia
-
Guys, don't forget the Mojo bags. So far only 1 piece for each bow has been sent in.
-
vermonster13 sorry I'm so slow at getting you a flake of obsidian from a hunter of the stone age that I picked up in my wanderings. Will try and get it out this week.
Thanks for the reminder
-
Come on Faith. We gotta date with some Florida hogs, deer and stingray!
Stan
-
Well, my time with "Hope" ended this morning with one last ditch hunt. She and I were in a stand on a ridgetop in the dark, waiting for the light of dawn to break. I always love being in a stand before daybreak and seeing the woods come alive, I'm sure many of you are the same. This morning was foggy and damp, but about an hour after first light I could hear the steady shuffling of footsteps in the leaves and the crack of a branch as a large animal made it's way towards my little hiding spot. This was one of those times when even though you could hear the animal from a distance, he was right on top of me before I saw him walking through the woods. (I did mention it was thick didn't I?) He was 20 yards away, his path would take him five yards in front of me if he continued....at 12 yards the little six point whitetail turned to his left and walked down the hill and away from any chance Hope and I had of making him dinner.
While my time with Hope is over, I will not forget the generosity and vision of the people that made this possible, and I will certainly not forget the hunts that she and I had together.
Thank you all for letting me participate in this endeavor.
Claudia, your up next, and she is on her way to you as we speak.
David
-
Thanks for putting plenty of Mojo on this little bow, David. The great thing about putting your hands on a bow that other like-minded archers have held, is that the spirit seems to increase. Whether we make a kill or not, we still add to the magic.
I'll keep everyone posted on the exploits of Hope in the Bluegrass.
Blessings to All,
Claudia
-
She's here. I'll get to know her tomorrow morn. :)
Stan
-
Good luck with her Stan!! It's a good shootin' bow!!!
-
Well everyone, Hope has made it to the land of the Bluegrass. I'll let you know how we do!
Claudia
-
Howdy there, Gang! Hope and I have a hunting report :D ! I don't have time for the details and a picture at this moment, but I'll connect later with the whole story and the evidence. But, just to wet your whistle, I will tell you that Hope scored on a fat Kentucky doe at 4:30 CST this afternoon! Heck, I haven't even had her four hours  .
More later...I've got to get her quartered up...
Claudia
-
Way to go Claudia!!! She's a shooter isn't she? Can't wait for pics and a story.
David
-
Good job Claudia!
-
Congrats Claudia. Looking forward to the pics
-
Okay ya'll...here is the pic (I hope) and the story will follow. By the way, the pup in the photo is Henry, my new wirehaired dachshund puppy. He was having almost as much fun as me :D !
Hope arrived at my place at 12:45pm today. After getting her out of the shipping case and putting her together, I grabbed a selection of arrows to see what she liked. She chose Gold Tip 35-55 with a 50 grain brass insert and a 220 grain point. Cool. I installed a set of El Grande Grizzlies, took another couple of test shots and looked at the time. Hmmm..1:40pm...just enough time to get cleaned up and get into my hunting blind for the afternoon.
I arrived at my ground blind at the end of a clover field amidst intermittent drizzle. I settled in at 3 pm and a fawn was quick to appear after only 15 minutes. She wandered around a bit before heading back into the adjacent woods.
Then, at 4:15 a doe appeared right in front of my location, but she was facing me the entire time. No shot. She fed away from me in short order and I relaxed into my folding chair. Then, I heard the sound of a deer brush against foliage and when I looked up, another doe was making her way toward me. She stopped perfectly broadside at 13 steps, I came to full draw, and let Hope do her thing. The doe ran 80 yards through the field and dropped. No tracking job necessary :D .
Of course, my good fortune means that Vermonster will get her a bit sooner than expected. Why let the mojo go stale?!! I'll keep her a few more days and then be sending her on to VT. I hope she's as lucky for the next hunters as she was for me tonight
Claudia
-
Wow Claudia, way to go! You don't waste any time, do you? How many tags do you have? Sounds like you have a great hunting spot; go for a monster buck now.
Chuck
-
Thanks, Chuck. Ky gives hunters unlimited doe tags...so I'm using those to fill the freezer. If Mr. Big comes along, he'll be in danger as well, but if not, I'm still as happy as a lark!
Claudia
-
Congrats Claudia!!
Great story and great doe! Those Horne bows are sweet shooters for sure!!
-
ditto...great congrats..marco#78 way to go!!!! :wavey: :wavey: :wavey:
-
Congrats....You are one fine hunter!!
-
Claudia,
I meant to commend you on the great picture in my previous post. You did a great job of presenting the results of your successful hunt in a very professional and tasteful manner. Love the big smile. Good job.
Started training that Doxie yet?
Chuck
-
Thanks, Chuck. Henry is just 12 weeks old and will begin his training with the next deer I get. In the mean time, I have Albert, a two year old wirehair doxie that is a tracking machine...not to mention a great foot warmer!
Claudia
-
Great picture, great story, great shooting.
-
Congrats Claudia!
-
Well done Claudia!
-
Good morning everyone. I am new to this site and to trad. gear. Totaly hooked on the simplicity, difficulty, and beauty of the bows. Trying to learn instinctive shooting and having a great time with it. Does anyone know of any traditional get togethers in central Texas where I can learn from experienced folks. These bows, Faith, Hope, and Charity are so beautiful. Thank you to all who have sent in your stories, they all are such a draw to the traditional way. May God bless all of you. DTS ps. just learning this computer thing, please be patient
-
Congrats!!
-
You devil. I am off line for a few days and ya do it.....
Congrats girl. I love the pup!

Uh...me and Faith don't know each other that well yet. Good going Claudia.
This bow shoots great. Smooth and quick. Hope to have her after something this weekend.
Stan

Claudia is the poster girl for class too. She scored and sent me the bow out today. I am supposed to have her the last two weeks of the month, but due to some family issues I didn't believe I would get to hunt Hope more than twice due to conflicts that came up. Now I'll get to give Hope the attention she deserves and even send her on early to the next person in line.
Thanks Claudia you are most certainly one of the good ones!
-
Claudia,
You inspire me, great job!

Congrats! Great story.

That is wonderful. Great photo.

Thanks, everyone.
Dave, you should have Ms. Hope tomorrow afternoon to begin your hunt. It was my pleasure to send her along early and I'll keep my figers crossed that you and she get lucky :D . I do have something for the medicine bag and I'll be sending it to you when its ready...might be a couple of weeks, but it will definately be a gift of mojo  .
In the mean time, enjoy your time with Hope...the experience of holding a bow built by and held by friends is just amazing...
:campfire: .
Claudia
-
The post office tried to deliver her today when I was at the playground with the little guy. Never expected them to get it here over night. She must really want to get out and hunt after her time with you Claudia, you gave her a taste for along with the folks before you. Got permission to hunt 2 adjoining farms today that a huge 8 point calls home along with some of his smaller brethren. I'll try my best to keep the mojo flowing.
-
I'm glad you are now getting a chance to hunt with one of the bows David!! Claudia got her all warmed up for ya with her doe!!
It's gonna be great to see what everybody puts into the medicine bags now that everyones hunting seasons are going full blast!!
I can JUST IMAGINE what Ol' Bama Stan is gonna put into Faith's bag when he is thru :archer:
-
Hope has arrived in the Green Mountains, any New England/New Yorkers who would like to see her up close and personal are welcome to come visit her and put a few arrows through her.
Tomorrow I'll feed her some arrows and see what she likes, Saturday morning she'll be introduced to opening day of deer/turkey archery here.
Thanks Claudia for everything. Danny I'm looking forward to it to, thought I might have to give-up my time with her but the good Lord saw fit to make things work out better than I could hope. Now I'll try to put the icing on the cake with Hopes first New England kill.
Chad Jones gets her next. I'll try to make her a little heavier with Mojo for you buddy.
-
Claudia thats outstanding!!! Your article in TBM was a great read.
Good luck David.
We've just purchased 40 acres in Northern Wisconsin(next to my brother-in-laws 67acres)and I'll be taking Hope out for the late season. I'll also be launching an arrow in memory of those who have gone before us...
I'm thinking that my current arrows, 2114 with 125g tip will work with the 52# draw of Ms. Hope. Can anyone tell me if my current arrows will get me in the ball park?
I just want to be ready as possible when she gets here, so as to not keep the lady waiting.
Thanks,
Jerry
-
Those should match up decently. I have a set of real good POCs I've been waiting for a special occassion to use myself.
-
Ok POCs she did not like at all. 2016 with 145 grn points gave me this at 25 yards in an hours shooting time. I think she's good to go. What do you folks think? (In a 10-20mph swirling wind to boot)
This girl just plain shoots when you give her an arrow she likes!
-
:bigsmyl:

:bigsmyl:
-
Good deal, Dave! I tried POCs as well and had the same outcome. When I tried 35-55 GTs I definately hit pay dirt. Now, go get after those whitetails!
Claudia
-
I have to wait until Saturday Claudia, but turkeys open the same day and where I'm going has about 150 resident birds! Plus one eight pointer that last years drops were in the 140 class, so I'm Hoping(pun intended).
Terry I need you to give me a call if you can please.
-
Claudia,
Congratulations on your deer. You sure know how to get it done. Your pup looks like he is having a great time also.
Jerry,
Your 2114’s should fly great out of Ms. Hope. Best of Luck.
This has really been great getting to watch the adventures unfold.
Mark & Sandy
-
Thank you for your generosity and making this happen!
-
Claudia,
Do you give lessons? 4 hours with a new bow and a deer in the freezer. Wow! Congratulations
Good luck to the next in line. That would be Vermonster13 I think. We will be waiting for a story.
Craig
-
Craig thankyou for your generosity too. The BowBolt is a slick system.
Thanks to everyone who has made this possible. It's been a blessing to be involved in
-
Today was opening day for deer and turkey archery here. It was a nice 28 out when I left at 5:45am, the moon was full in the western sky, bright enougn to count deer on my way to the farm. I'd reached a bakers dozen by the time I hit my pull-off. Pretty good sign I thought.
Nothing quite like the light of a full moon under a cold clear sky. The air is like drinking cold spring water, it cleanses the soul. I worked my way into the old remains of an orchard that had few apples still hanging and a few oaks and beeches with nuts in the woods around. A regular buffet for whitetails. I didn't even make it to my blind when I walked into the first unsuspecting deer and what do you know she's a bigun. The area hasn't been mowed this fall and there is a lot of stalking cover, problem is while I can see well enough to shoot, it isn't legal light yet. What's a guy to do?
-
As I wait to get busted or for the magic buzz in my pocket to say it's legal, two more deer walk into my killing field. Does everywhere, or I thought they were all does, that changed, but we'll get there in time.
The wind is blowing vey lightly from them to me, so things are good so far, but as the sun rises here, the wind usually swaps directions which is why I like to get in deep and then work my way ouy slowly with the wind at my face again. well I'm in deep at least.
-
I love that time when the full moon is in one side of the sky and the sun is beginning to get ready to crawl out from behind the mountains. The foliage is fast approaching peak up here and for now it is the most beautiful place on Earth. You can practically see God's brush of many colors sweeping across the land. Then the stupid vibrating alarm in my pocket pulls me back to the here and now. Time to make a decision.
-
Well the big one turned out to be a spike which isn't legal here, so I decided since Hope already had a doe under her belt, the first day would be dedicated to either a buck, turkey or bear.
Speaking of bears............
-
After a brief meeting with a fellow who was dragging a treestand in to hang, Hope and I headed down to the barn to meet the owner himself as so far I had only met the son in person. We helped load a wagon with hay bales for a customer he had and made the proper introductions.
His weekend hand was their with his own son who had just finished an archery shooting program in school. Well to make a long couple hours short, he loved Hope and will be attending a bowhunters safety course I'll be doing in one week with his dad, two more added to our ranks thanks to the Horne's beautiful work. So after a littl talking with Mr. Fox, he told he had been having some trouble with a black bear boar that torn up some corn and other stuff on him, said he wouldn't mind it leaving with a tag in it's ear and gave me an idea where I might find him if he was still hanging around. He also told me there was a sow with two cubs so please be sure I killed the right one.
Faith and I walked about a quarter mile into the woods and found a nice stand of Beech Trees with nuts dropping, we took up residence along a rather well worn trail and bided our time.
-
Some of the land Hope is touring with me these weeks.
Bears, turkey and deer lie ahead.
-
About an hour of watching gray and red squirrels tempting me with easy shots passed by when I heard something coming through the hardwoods below. Out of the thicket comes a bruiser of a blackie, sadly it isn't alone, two cubs about the size pitbulls come barreling out of the brush making a racket that even the squirrels were impressed by. It was a blast watching them and mama at the chowline (times like these I tend to forget how bad a hurting mama could put on me). Eventually Hope and I spend some time watching a half dozen does work the nuts, but no bucks. Sunday is another day.
-
Sunday was another day of does, it was also the last free pass day. The freezer needs filling and the next legal one of size will get the call. Bears were nowhere to be found today and I believe the boar has moved up the mountain from the sign I found and it's age. I found the turkeys on the other side of the road, but so did someone's black lab that was running loose and having a ball in the thick stuff chasing the flock into the next county. We ended the day watching a gray fox make a meal of a chipmunk and putting a mighty chase on a red squirrel. Talk about speed!
Hope and I will make it out a few more times before she moves on. I've enjoyed her company very much so far and I would also like to thank all of you who made this possible. It is a good thing you folks are doing.
-
i enjoyed reading that vermonter. With all those critters about your luck will soon change!
-
David,
Good read so far, but the story needs one of those magical endings that can happen in a blink here in New England so keep at it and and good luck. I know Hope will do the rest.
Craig
-
Well Hope and I had an hour or so last night and an hour this morning to go for a walk. Last night we saw a dozen deer all on the wrong side of the road(posted and they don't give permission). A flock of about 80 turkeys were on the far end of the cut corn field and there was no cover for a stalk, but we're getting them patterned a bit. We also saw the bruiser and he is quite a bit bigger than last year! He was in the field posted in the last picture above and we caught him in the headlights on the way home. One of my friends has a stand up there but he didn't hunt last night! I haven't broke the news to him yet.
This morning we saw the turkeys in the field the deer were in last night and about 60 geese in the cut corn field, our time was short though as I had to pick my boy up at preschool. The animals are out there, we just need to make our connection.
-
Great updates David! Beautiful pics too...how bout some more of that gorgeous country you're in?
-
(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f311/vermonster13/HuntHope002.jpg)
This area here we can hunt both sides of the road. I'll get more tomorrow if it doesn't rain to much to get good pics. Talking snow late in the week possibly. That will make things real fun, can do some real New England hunting with a few inches on the ground.
-
The farm here and sawmill over the road to the left own about 2000 acres between them that we have permission to hunt. On the otherside of the road there is a cut corn field that has a sugar maple stand behind it and some real thick evergreens along a brook, we've had a few turkey run-ins down there and found a monster set of tracks along the brook. Farther down the road to the left is a 50 acre patch of cut corn with a 25 acre clover patch next to it. The deer cross out of a 15 acre swamp that has a shooting range on the otherside of it and hunting isn't allowed in there. But that cut corn and clover patch has turkeys geese and deer in it all day long just different animals at different times. I may have to break down and buy a pop-up blind for down there because there is no cover except for a group of about 5 trees that are just off the road about 15 yards. If things don't work out here, we have another 900 acres we can hunt up the mountains in the top picture. Buck only there, but turkeys and bear are always a possibility up there also.
-
Hope went for a little walk with me this morning while my boy was at preschool. There is a cold front moving in, the temp was 66 this morning and is supposed to drop to 30 tonight with possible snow. The game was moving. We saw a few dozen turkey on our ride to the spot we were going to hunt today. We didn't have but and hour, hour and a half so we were going to need to be sharp.
As I got her unloaded and ready to rock a few turkey sounded off in the hemlocks we were headed for, a good sign indeed! As we worked our way through the thick stuff to get to a small blind at the edge of the hemlocks and sugar maple stand we saw some movement in the hardwoods. 3 good does were browsing towards us, we eased into the stand and they were only 40 yards away and still coming to us with the wind blowing across and down away from them. Things were looking real good.
At 30 yards they were behind one of the biggest and oldest sugar maples you'll ever see, they just need to come around on the trail there and they would be in perfect range at 25 yards or so. This was getting good!
-
Come on David, I gotta go and get in the woods....I guess I'll have to wait till tonight for the rest of the story....
David
-
I could just make out the lead doe coming through the rasberry bushes at the edge of where I needed her to be and eased back on Hopes string. A simple mantra of pick a spot echoing through my head.
Snnnorrrrrrrrrrrrttttttttttt You'd be surprised how high a guy my size can get up a tree in a single bound!
Three does I never saw had come up the left of me and caught my scent(it rained all night so the woods are whisper quiet for walking right now, not that an old doe needs any help!)
BUSTED!!!
-
There's more to come David, but I'll save that for tonight, so you can concentrate at work.
-
So it's pretty close to the time I need to leave to pick-up my boy at preschool so I figure I might as well head out. I work my way back through the hemlocks and then get into the real thick stuff. I get into where shooting just isn't an option when I see a pair of ears just flicking over the top of the raspberry vines. I am being watched. The old girl is waiting for me to walk by, so I make like I don't see her and keep easing along, there's a little break not ten steps ahead where I may be able to get a shot off on her.
-
So the ground is starting to dip down and I can't see her ears anymore and I am getting real close to the break where I may have a decent shot at a shot. It will only be maybe 8 yards so this will be a quick shot to have any chance of scoring. Ever notice how time can slow down and speed-up all at once at moments like this? How connected you feel to everything around you? These are the moments that got me addicted to hunting in the beginning and I find joy in the fact that it still feels just as good now. You know, truly alive.
-
Good stuff vermonster!!! I'm right there next to ya through this adventure! What happens next?!!!!!
Todd
-
I know exactly what you mean, when all of that stuff stops, I'll stop hunting. I don't see that happening anytime soon, now about that shot....
David
-
The "calm" came over me. I never get buck fever, until the animal is down for good. I get serious tunnel vision as the time for the shot approaches, it seems like every sense is sharper. I can count the rain drops on the brush, ever detail shines out in the tunnel (one of the reasons I got busted by the second group of does earlier, every blessing has a price it seems). Smells, sounds, sights and a sense I believe our ancestors had, a preminition of game comes about. I knew before I came to draw what was going to be waiting for me.
-
And........
David
-
Nothing, she was gone the way only an old wise whitetail can be. It was worth every second though and I'm not back to the truck yet.....
-
....and your boy is waiting on you too....
David
-
I give myself an hour to get out and get to him. Plenty of time in case I should run into something interesting on my way out.
-
Dang you've got me all tensed up reading this. COOL!!! You'd be great at writing suspense stories.

Well guys, I have to apologize, I got called out of town on work and just got back last night. Just in time to wrap up the bow and send it to Curt monday. I did get to shoot it around the house a couple days and loved it. Sorry I could'nt add to the story much. Maybe next time. I'm sure Curt will have a good time with her.

Hope and Feathers in the Air, update tomorrow.
-
Time to make the pre-school run then off to find the turkeys, hopefully where they roosted or very nearby.
-
I promise to catch up on the rest of this thread in time. But I wanted to post a picture of Hope's most important date IMO. She attended a Bowhunters Safety Class I instructed tonight and got to stoking the trad fire in some new archers and older ones too.

Cool David....great pic.

Good stuff Vermon. :wavey:   ...Van
-
Thanks Van & Terry. I have more to add to the thread and a turkey feather for the mojo bag. I'm going to string the story out for a while and I am not feeling all that well today so bear with me please.
-
Hope to have Miss Faith for the weekend...stay tuned.........
-
Well I guess I missed the mailman Fri.,and I'll have to pick it up on Monday(if I can get the chance after work)....so I'm basically down to "MABYE" and afternoon hunt during the week and next weekend...then it's gone...oh well,I'll do my best to get something with it.....looking forward to shooting her again!!
-
Miss Faith is here, did a bit of bare shafting/shooting in the shop.Should be ready to go in a day or two. That bow shoots great, hope I can hold up my end of the deal if givin the chance.
Looking forward to some time afield with her!!!
-
I'm pretty confident you'll do ok if given the chance Curt. Go get 'em!
David
-
Hey folks, I'm still waiting on some mojo bag pieces from many of you. Benbow made a real nice addition today. I may just make one bag with everything from both bows at this point so as to have enough to make a decent bag, hate to do it but it may have to be.
I added a turkey feather by the way. Did I share the story yet?
-
No but we are listening
John
-
Doesn't look good for me to shoot anything with Miss Faith. Recieved her monday, worked long hours all week, managed to finished the arrows I made for her,but for some reason they just won't fly to my liking. The weather is supposed to be terrible all weekend.Unless I can work something out for a couple arrowsdon't know if I'll have the time to even do that)...and the weather breaks a bit...it doesn't look like she'll be getting out in NY......I just won't go out with arrows that aren't flying perfect....so either way, it looks like Miss Faith will be heading to Mac on Monday.....I do appreciate the time I got to spend with her...Thanks Terry
-
I got "hope" this morning! I ran outside to play with her a little before bed. She seems to like the same carbons that i shoot out of my recurve so i should be good to go. I'm planning on taking her to the woods this evening if it ain't pouring down rain. My first few shots out of her at 20 yards resulted in my breaking a nock. I hope that is a good sign.
-
We have faith in you Chad.
-
Hey vermonster13 your as slow at finishing your huning story as I was getting my part of the mojo bag to you. How about finishing the story?
-
Ok Galen. To much time reading Charlie's stories has rubbed off on me a little. LOL
So my time with Hope was a little shorter than I like and if not for Claudia's generosity I may not have got my turn, so thank you again Claudia.
So the last day I had Hope I only had an hour to walk her. I needed to get her in the mail for an appointment she needed to make before she could continue onto Ohio. I dropped my boy off at preschool and headed for my spot. I had already filled out the log saying how much I enjoyed my time with her and that I hadn't filled any tags with her. My mistake, but we'll get there.
I went into the oak ridge that was bordered by some hemlocks and spruce that the turkeys had been roosting in and some deer had been bedding in. At the bottom of the ridge is the farmers house garden that had a half acre of sweet corn still standing in it that he leaves for the deer and birds. So this area sees a lot of action.
I saw a few does feeding across the ridge, but the wind was all wrong to try to stalk them in my limited time. Just then a flock of about thirty birds trucked up out of the thicket that borders the field and jumped the fence to the posted pasture. I figured that I was done and I needed to get the bow in the mail soon and pick up my boy.
So I worked back across the ridge to where my truck was parked and wasn't 30 yards away when I heard the familiar keeing of a bird thats lost the flock. Checked my watch, I had maybe 30 minutes leeway. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
-
It sounded like the bird was down a trail that the deer used to my right that let them check the corn out before they committed to going into the garden. The open spot is choked with those little red berried thorn bushes. But if I turned and went straight down the hill and cut into the garden I could maybe catch this bird going into the garden trying to catch up with the flock in the pasture. Looked at my watch again, not enough time. I would have to give up and send Hope on without adding to her mojo it seemed. I took the trail to the left that broke over the ridge to the tractor path my truck was parked on that lead down to the garden/orchard.
-
Man your cruel!!! ;^)
-
Thought you had left Galen so I was taking my time. Trying to type and amuse my 3 yearold at the same time you know. Should I finish now or later? LOL
-
TAPTAPTAP..... :banghead:
-
Well I wasn't in hunting mode so much as getting out of the woods mode at this point. So I was moving up the trail at a pretty good clip when it happened. A single jake steps on the path right were it meets the tractor path about 30 yards in front of me. Did I tell you guys how well Hope shoots for me?
-
I tried to be patient but all I could get to was mildly irritated.... :biglaugh:
-
The Zwickey Delta broadhead passed through exactly the way it was set up too. Just a little fletch left showing on the near side of the bird. He piled up on the spot and I only needed to carry him 20 yards to the truck. it was a beautiful thing. He weighted a little shy of 19 pounds. A quick run to the check in station and a drop off of the bird at the inlaws house who weren't home at the time. Figured I'd get some pictures when I got back from the Post office and picking up my Jake. Sent Hope on her way with a log book not quite filled out right and picked up Jake.
Drove back up to the inlaws to get some pictures and in the hour I wasn't there they had come home and my father-in-law already had the bird done up for cooking! So no pictures but a last second addition of a feather for the Mojo Bag and a great respect for Mark Horne's bows.
That Bush Bow can flat out shoot. Farthest shot on a turkey I've ever taken and it went as well as I could have ever hoped.
My chapter is done, hopefully Chad will add his soon. Best of luck Chad.

Good story David...the result was worth the wait.
-
Yeh folks keep throwing those "logs" on the fire. I can't wait to read the next one!Vermonster you just made my day!!!LOL you know why don't you? come on X-MAS !!! This has to be the best bow reveiw ever.
-
The Hornes are real nice people. The Brush Bow is a real good length for hunting our thick eastern woods too. At $475 for the standard model it's a real steal especially when you see the price of so many of the mass production bows now. I have a feeling the orders for it are going to be going up soon.
-
Good stuff David!!
Go get'um Chad...I know you will!!
-
Congrats, David! You should be receiving my contribution to the medicine bag either today or tomorrow.
Okay, Chad...now it's your turn!
Claudia
-
Just got it Claudia, nice addition. We're starting to build some serious mojo here folks. Save your pennies for the auction!
-
Way to go David!

The posatal service made a trip up the drive this afternoon and I signed for the black case I knew held "Faith". :) I kept cutting wood, knowing I did not have the time to properly introduce myself to the bow. My wife and I had our evening meal and I just unpacked the bow. Pictures do not do justice for the beauty my eyes beheld. I have always loved the grain in real woods and also the color and the Horne's did an awesome job combining it all into this piece of artwork. I applaud their work and their generosity :clapper: I always wondered if bows where feminine or masculine  and I guess there is room for both but this is a young lady, through and through. Slender with graceful curves in the right places, petite yet somehow determined and strong willed within. I put her together, drew her once and sat back and absorbed the beauty before me. I could never look upon a metal riser and mishapen limbs and wheels the same way I do a traditional longbow or recurve. :( This bow is a beauty and I could easily put her right into my corral. I have not been home too long from our five month summer job and when we return home after 5+ months there are things that must be done. Hence, even though the seasons in both PA and neighboring NY have been in full swing I stayed home doing things that should be done and forgoing the woods. I have done some minor scouting as I know the woods around home well and I have seen a couple of good bucks. Now they are starting to cruise and do some serious rubbing and scraping and I have placed out 2 stands and my blind in anticipation of my guest. She comes at a time I needed a boost. Tomorrow we will shoot some and get acquainted and hopefully by tomorrow evening or Saturday we will hit the woods for the short time we will be together......Mac~
-
She's a Gracefull lady alright, enjoy!
-
hello Mac haven't spoke to you in a while. Still have that great string you made me on my longbow and it drew blood this season. Enjoy Faith, if there is anyone that deserves to spend time with this bow it has to be you.I'll be looking for your stories.
-
Tom, glad to see you posting and hope that string has some powerful mojo.
I have a little more time tonight and some pics to play with. My wife and I have been away from home for 5 1/2 months so there was much to do to prepare for winter. My heart hasn't been in the archery thing as in the past. Last year left me soul searching over a lot of the beliefs I held about traditional archery and archers and left me with many questions. My heart was not into it although I did shoot over the summer. I almost told Terry to send Faith to someone else but then realized what a beautiful opportunity this was to be part of and I started to look foreward with some anticipation. So Faith has come to Potter County, Pennsylvania. Part of the Big woods or God's Country. Here are some pics of what it is like around my home. Much prettier when leaves are changing but still beautiful to me none the less. Although I usually head back into the hills I am finding much sign around home. This is a photo or two from the lane above my home showing the hills and the valleys witha few homes. As I said earlier I had scouted a little when we started to see rub activity on trees in the yard and on field edges. Dale, my trusty companion, and I found rubs plentiful and of good size. We actually saw one of the bigger bucks when out one day. Here are some of the rubs. All this activity is limited to about an acre area on the fringe of the bigger woods. I believe with us gone and no activity that the deer have found a quiet, safe haven here. Scrape activity has become prominent. These scrapes are under a pine tree we can see from our home and are used annually for the last 15 years. We have learned a lot about deer scrapes watching this from our home. Also a few others deeper inside under an old apple tree. Friday morning we awoke to snow covered ground. I got to shoot some and set out late afternoon for a few hours hunt. The snow had melted on the southern slopes from the sun but the northern exposures held on to it. The wind was raw and cold and my arthritic hands and knees let me know it too. Going to have to start with more pain killers. Heard some turkeys a couple benches up in the beech woods probably feeding on beechnuts. Later something scared them as they soared past my treestand like B52's and banked to land in the fields below. They would be going to roost soon. About an hour before dark I saw this small doe. She knew from the swirling winds that something was in the area. (http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0UgDpAgMZlP2qBPY*Ryy0xShDv7EUailWf*u5iIH67QjzpW4WjGt!jGB33YhVED1aDFrkWT8QVHEDYj47zz1GzA*frJEenkvZ*I!9rZzu!tHtOjCIpvKVwtTwyfOTFi5B/IMAG0017.JPG?dc=4675596423169292793)
you can see her left of the bigger tree as it limbs out toward the top of the photo. A short time later I saw a large, dark deer cross out in the woods but I never saw it again. I think it was heading down by the big scrape by the pine and then into my neighbors fields to check does. Seeing these made me hungry and as I left I got to look at the Rutting Moon...on schedule by Charlies predictions in Deer and Deer Hunting. (http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0UgDdAv0Y3*uqBPY*Ryy0xacNWCgCBc9*P0ap*bL9pkllcr7Kaa7KdaPcZo1P3S0FtVnJ9FWpb8xf8E4fR4LX2X8I5li7PFoTqYcm9yfAF*o2bM263XrbM2U7bejWKoWS/IMAG0020.JPG?dc=4675596409746517834) It wasn't in it's fullness due to cloud cover and approaching snow.
-
Today found me out before morning light for a switch and I also had obligations with my grandkids that only gave me the morning. It was not in vain. As daylight stared I could see the light snow that had fallen again overnight. I saw some does or family groups way off in the distance and then around 9 I had this buck come by but he never offered a shot. He was slightly uphill and about 25 yards out. You can see his antler in the photo...he's a good one for around here. He left unaware I was there. I will have to be careful not to overhunt the area now but maybe we will meet again. I have all reason to believe we will....I hope it is with Faith when it happens. Those pics should be in reverse order. While I was sleeping I was blackmailed in the photo with the beercan and when I awoke I was the one left with a skeleton to pic for my supper. That's all the good brothers from PATHA left for me...LOL Roy

Great pics Mac. Hope your season brings renewed vigor for our sport.Wouldn't be the same without you.
-
Great pics Mac, you live in beautiful country. Hope you have found what you were looking for, we've missed you around here. God bless.

Well we hunted both ends of today but should have stayed in bed. Early this morning I hear voices and my beighbor, his dad and his boys were going off onto the hill to hunt turkeys. They main group wandered up the pipeline to my right but two of the boys came right through my area heading toward an old logging road into the beechwoods. Later in the afternoon as evening was starting to settle in there was shotgun fire above me and again turkeys came sailing down over my head. Always knew those guys stayed at it all day as down over the hill they came again walking right through where I was hunting. I stayed until dark and my tally for today was one chipmunk.....didn't shoot him cuz he didn't have enough meat. :D ...real story is I couldn't hit the darn thing anyway. :( ...Mac~
-
How are the girls doing??
-
Well I hunted several more days off the ground rattling and calling. Saw a few deer but nothing within shooting distance. Didn't take a camera as it just gets in my way or I loose it when moving. Saw two little bucks (a spike and a small six) in NY state but I guess I am done now for awhile. At least the lil lady got me off my duff and hunting. It was fun and a pleasure and now the pleasure belongs to Dick Easter as it is on its way to his place as of today. Good Luck Dick as I am sure those Ohio bruisers are just cruising and waiting for you to show up with the lil gal........Mac~
-
Glad ya got out bud...hope to see you in a couple months at Shawns
Com'on Dick up to you now bud!!
-
My time with Hope is over and she will be going on to the next in line. For some reason i just couldn't get Hope to shoot right for me. Plus i was too busy hunting to spend alot of time trying to tune arrows to her.
-
Chad, I had the same problem.....and with hunting time at such a premium these days...I just couldn't bring myself to sacrifice what precious little time I had getting "Faith" to shoot like I needed her to.....congrats again on your great buck!!
-
Got a package today from Walkingstick....Thanks Mac. It's raining here today so after stringing up Faith, I fired away at my basement target bag. I can only shoot 10 yds. in the basement but it was enough to see my cedar shafts were flying true. Of course, these were the same shafts I had last May in Texas for the Mod Melt hunt where Faith was first introduced...so I knew they would fly. Guess I'm lucky I didn't have to go through a bunch or different arrows to find a good match. Planning on a few morning and/or evening local hunts and a three day outing next week at a farm a couple of hours from home....be at the yardbarn Chad, I'll call you for dinner one evening. The bucks are really getting into chasing right now so we should see deer. I'll keep you posted.
-
Best of Luck to you Dick. Hopin to see some pics :bigsmyl:
-
Dick, glad she arrived safe and sound. She is one sweet bow...enjoy.............Mac~
-
Got out with Faith yesterday morning and missed a good 8 point at 22 yds....shot right over his back.(quit looking at the rack and pick a spot stupid!) :banghead: Going to spend next Tuesday and Wednesday in a treestand so hope to have happier things to report by turkey day.
-
Don't worry Dick, you'll connect. Best of luck to you.
How is Hope doing?
Keep us posted,
Ken
P.S. Let's see some pics of your guys/gals dates with the fine ladies.
-
Spent the last two days sitting in treestands with Faith. Mid 20's in the mornings, warming to about 50 by mid afternoon, sunny with little wind. Beautiful weather to be in the woods. The deer were moving but did not have a shooter come into bow range. Due to holiday family commitments and the Ohio gun season next week, it's not very likely I will have a chance to hunt with Faith again....so I will be sending her onto Mike Bolin a couple days early. Good luck Mike! Thanks to Horne Archery, Warren Archery and everone else connected with this great TradGang event.
-
Dick, I contacted Terry a few weeks ago about sending Faith on to whoever is next on the list. I am working in Oklahoma and I'm not really able to hunt with the hours I am working. I could shoot her at the range in the evenings, but Faith should hunted with. I will pm and email you too, so that you get the info in plenty of time. Thanks, Mike

Hope arrived in Montana this morning. I went through a dozen different sets of arrows and found two sets that fly great in the garage. I will give the two sets some longer distance tests after a Saturday morning hunt, then if all goes well, use her for the evening hunt. Currently an old set of Bear arrows with Razorheads (picked up at a garage sale for a dollar each) fly the best, hitting half an inch high at ten yards. The other arrows that fly well are Paradox Archery Chundo shafts, footed with purpleheart, and tipped with Damascus trade points made by Doug Campbell. These are hitting an inch high at ten yards. Better hit the sack, 4 a.m. will come early and I wouldn't want the whitetails to beat me to my stand.

Good Luck Walt!!! Looking forward to pix and stories

First, would like to thank Chad for sending Hope a week early. I had been saving my last late season doe tag for the first two weeks of December, when I was scheduled to have Hope. The buck season ends on Sunday for most of Montana, and with Hope's early arrival I am able to hunt bucks for two days. Well I got in one day anyway, as of three this afternoon I have used my last tag for the extended season area. Luckily I still have two tags for does in a different unit that are good until Sunday evening. Hope and I will be taking a walk tomorrow afternoon and if my luck continues those tags will also be filled.
Today’s hunt started with a morning sit on a stand located in the bottleneck along a creek. Not being fully comfortable with Hope at longer distances I took my selfbow Pigger (63# @ 29") with the intention of taking a deer if the opportunity arose. About 7:45 a 4x2 buck came into view with his nose to the ground. The direction he was headed would lead him by my stand, but out of shooting range. A couple of soft grunts stopped him and then he cautiously circled around my stand looking for the mysterious buck. Unfortunately, he stayed at least twenty five yards from my stand, well out of Piggers range (at least it is when I am shooting Pigger), before moving further up the creek. Ten minutes later I catch movement on my right, which eventually materializes in to a little button buck. The bucks’ path will take him by me at ten yards. When he gets fully broadside an arrow suddenly appears in flight half way to the deer. It is one of the few times I don't remember drawing or releasing the arrow. The arrow hit the shoulder about three or four inches forward of the spot I had picked. Penetration of the Grizzly tipped, hex pine shaft appeared to be about twelve inches, which had me worried for a second or two. The buck took off on a dead run and started to stumble after forty yards, at sixty yards he laid down and never got up. The broadhead had severed the aorta and both lungs. The morning hunt was finished, now the work began.
I will post the afternoon hunt in the morning.

The Afternoon hunt.
After taking care of the button buck it was time to shoot Hope at longer distances. One of the best places I have found for testing broadheads is a plowed field; the dirt clods make great targets with a soft background. The Bears arrows weigh around 500 grains, about 200 grains lighter then the ones I shoot out of Pigger. Even though Hope is ten pounds lighter then Pigger these arrows hit considerably higher at thirty yards. After practicing for a few minutes I was confident with where the Bear arrows were hitting out to thirty yards and started the half mile trip to the stand, shooting along the way. The afternoon route to this evenings stand followed the edge of a plowed field and being early in the afternoon I did not expect to encounter any game. However, nearing the end of the field, I spotted a movement in the tall grass about one hundred yards away. Looking through my binoculars the tips of antlers appeared in the tall grass. After studying them for a couple of minutes I determined the buck was definitely worth taking, if a stalk could be made.
-
The wind was strong and in the right direction, ground on the plowed field was soft but open, and the moving through the grass had dried leaves covered with an inch or two of snow. Slowly moving through the edge of the field and the high grass I kept several trees between myself and the buck. At forty yards an old deadfall provided the needed cover to close the final distance to twelve yards. At fifteen yards the buck became aware that something wasn’t right and stood up. An arrow was knocked earlier in the stalk and at twenty yards I positioned the bow ready for a shot if the opportunity came. As the buck stood I drew the bow, he started to run, I finished my draw and released, leading him a little. The buck was running slower then I thought and the arrow caught him in the neck, passing completely through. After the shot I realized the buck was running on three legs, the left rear leg flopping side to side as he ran. After he disappeared in the brush I sat down on the old dead fall, let the adrenaline rush subside and replayed the last few minutes in my mind.
-
And , And!
-
First thing after making a shot on an animal, unless the animal is seen going down, I access where the arrow actually hit, being brutally honest with myself, then determine my next move based upon that. I was sure the arrow hit the neck about eight to twelve inches below the head, but a little closer to the front side then is needed to cut the jugular. After checking the arrow a wait of an hour seemed prudent so I planted my butt on the tree and waited. After thirty minutes the butt was getting sore my brain extremely restless so I decided to backtrack the buck and see where he had come from and determine how the leg had been injured, if possible. The buck had bedded down in four other places in seventy yards and his tracks led to the neighbors’ fence line, where I stopped trailing. Having bedded four times within the last four hours and blood in each beds, but none along the tracks, I concluded he had been hit hard in the rear leg, most likely with a shotgun slug and whoever shot it had lost the trail. Five beds within seventy yards and as slow as he had been running (even three legged) told me he had been hit hard and probably wasn’t going far. Still there was a lingering doubt, so the butt was planted back on the deadfall tree to wait the remainder of the full hour.
Following the trail through the brush, across a small opening, and back into the brush was extremely easy, blood was on both sides of the trail. After following the trail for a hundred yards I saw a couple of dozen miner birds darting through the bushes and was confident where he was and he was dead. However, I continued following the blood trail that led to the birds and found the buck laying in the trail. After determining he was dead I drug him out to the edge of the field for pictures, but the camera was in my truck. After hiking back to the truck and driving back, pictures were taken; he was dressed, skinned, and quartered in the field using what I call the gutless method. The buck had been hit in the left rear leg with buckshot which was like hamburger. My arrow had hit a little higher and back of where I figured, nicking the jugular. The miner birds didn’t waste any time, pecking at the hole in the throat, ruining the cape.

To be honest, I didn’t get the real sense of satisfaction normally felt when taking an animal. The process of taking pictures and cleaning was slow, on purpose, with the mixed hope the shotgun hunter was following the trail and would claim the deer. I managed to make it last until almost dark without him showing up. It may be hard for some to understand, but my feelings are mixed: I put the killing arrow into him, but in reality just finished the job somebody else started. It really goes to the heart of why I choose to hunt with a selfbow most of the time; the journey most often is more important then the results. Here are a couple of pictures of the buck with Hope.

I have two doe tags left that are good through this afternoon then mountain lion season starts on the first, I think Hope and myself need to go for some long walks over the next couple of weeks.
I will keep everybody updated.

Great story , thanks Walt
-
Walt,
You've expressed your thoughts and emotions well in this story, which has a very positive ending. While I understand your lack of satisfaction, it is still a job well done!
David
-
Ted,
The buck died thirty yards from where Brents elk died a couple of weeks back.
Walt
-
But Walt, you still shot that buck on the run... and ended his "pain". I'd be feeling pretty good right now, was I you. Plus thats a heck of a buck by the looks of him. Some buckshot Cowboy owes you a beer ta-boot for cleaning up his work. Do you have any ideas as to who that may be? Just curious. Randy.
-
He came from Abigails place and was runnig around all summer and fall with that buck with the sticker on his right G2. Think I have seen him close to a dozen times during that time period.
Walt
-
Great Job Walt. Great story and pics too.You did a good deed; it will put that much more mojo into that little bow.
-
The only thing I would have done different is a back-handspring when I got to him.
Good job!!!!!!
Todd
-
Far better that you took him than leaving him for the coyotes as it appears the other person seemed to be doing.
Please keep something for the mojo bag.
-
Dang Walt, that is some story. I agree, you just cleaned up the mess the other hunter started. Good on ya
-
This evening I took Hope out to an old ranch I used to hunt several years back. The owner has over 700 acres and only allows archery and shotgun hunting but is surrounded by rifle hunting property. I hunted the place several times in the past month (killing one doe) without any problems, but those were all on weekdays. I was reminded not to hunt this place on the last day of rifle season by several bullets whizzing over my head. Being the last day of the general season it appeared as if everybody had brought out the guns to fill the freezer. Last week I made a ground blind along some good deer trails and the fresh snow indicated heavy use earlier in the morning. Unfortunately, the deer did not want to come out of the brush until after dark this evening.
Dave I will make sure and send something for the Mojo bag, hopefully it has some yellow in it.

Way to go Walt! Batting clean up isn't so bad sometimes. It might take away from the hunt a little, but you put a stalk on a mature deer and delivered a killing shot. Now go get some serious MOJO with a big cat. Miss Hope is picking up some serious MOJO with every outing. She is doing her duty to help the children that need a bit more.
I'm next up and I'm hoping to get out after the "Big Boy" we caught smiling on camera last week. I'll post the picture when I can get it all figured out. The largest VERY Typical 8 point I have every personally seen. I saw him about 3 weeks earlier at about 25 yards BEHIND my tree and then he saw me when I poked my head around and the sun decieded to poke its face out and light up mine for him to see.(that's a heck of a sentence...) As I watched the white flag, I was slightly discouraged but I instantly wanted to do it all over again.
With Christmass mixed in to my time and some serious illnesses in my extedned family, time and travel to hunt might be limited with Miss HOPE, but the time she spends in the field will be Cherished.
Jerry
-
well done walt, sounds like there's more fun in your future with hope.
-
Good on ya Walt; I consider that a real trophy because you ethically and humanely ended an animals suffering. I'd take that over the biggest, oldest buck in the woods. Congrats brother!!
-
Walt~
Excellent story! You done good!
Jerry~
Thats a heck of a buck! Good luck on him!
-
Good job, Walt. An animal desrves to live well and die well. Because of your shot with Hope, you assured that beast of a humane and noble death. Congratulations on a beautiful buck!
Claudia
-
WOW!!!! Great stories and great deer!!!!!
Awesome job Walt!
-
After seeing the buck Jeremy is holding out for I decided to send the bow on early. I am thankful that Chad sent Hope along earlier then required, thus allowing me the opportunity on the buck. I am sure he will be able to use it more then myself in the next four weeks.
Jeremy, Hope should be there on Thursday.
Good Luck,
Walt Francis
-
Alright Walt!! I think I know right where you stalked that buck and that was one heck of a tough job even if he wasn't 100%. Well done and congrats on one dandy buck.  :notworthy:
-
Way to go Walt...you did real good bud!!! That's a great buck.I can see why it might not be "quite the same" as if the buck wasn't hit already. But you certainly did the right thing and made a good shot, and you definately added to the mojo of "Hope".
Congrats!
-
Walt....
Thanks for adding some sweet spice to the effort!
-
All I have to say is Wow!! What a beautiful bow! The knife and armguard are awsome as well.
Just received Hope from the nice FedEx lady not 5 minutes after I got home from work. We're expecting 2"-10" of snow tomorrow, but I will be stopping after work and see if I can find what kind of arrows Hope likes to eat. I can't wait.
My wife is starting to get the whole thing, she was sitting at the kitchen table when I opened the case and she saw all the things inside. "All that is getting sent out to strangers to go hunting?" she said. "That's pretty cool" she even said the bow was pretty. She usually doesn't notice such things with my hunting "stuff"
Jerry
-
She spit out 2016's with 145 up front real well for me.
-
Well, I got home from work today and there was "Faith" sitting on the kitchen table. The rig has already drawn blood for me, unfortunately it was my own. Split the thumb open in the hurry to get the case open!!! Oh well, the bow, knife, arm armguard are beautiful. Can't wait to shoot some arrows and get her out hunting.
-

-
What spine arrows/head weight have these bows seemed to like the best? I'm next on the list to go on walkabout with Faith, and am wanting to get a little headstart with what I'll need for the tuning process.
Thanks!
-
Hey Brad,
If your shooting aluminum, the right handed "Hope" is liking 2114's with 125g head.
( I pull right at 28")I've been shooting her with pretty good results. Just my own form being culprit. Vermonster13 noted above that 2016's with 145g shot well with him. No clue on those carbon thingies!
Getting ready to go hunting this weekend. Turns out it is a special doe only weekend, and I'll be wearing orange with the rest of the gun hunters. My firt time hunting with a bow during a gun weekend, could be interesting. So if one of the big fellas walks by, that's what I'll have to do....let him walk right on by. Oh well..that's how it works I guess.
Jerry
-
Thanks, Jerry! Good luck this weekend!
Brad
-
Hey didn't Pinecone shoot 35/ 55 carbons out of her with 220gn heads or something and she wacked a doe with the setup go back to page 14 or so on the thread .
-
OPPS no page 9 of the thread yep shot 220 grain heads with 50 gns of extra weight.
-
Hope's next hunting adventure will begin tomorrow morning. I will be heading north after work today to Gilman, WI.(~4 hours northwest of Milwaukee )with my brother-in-law and another friend. Turns out it is a Doe only weekend statewide and guns are in play, which means I'll be in orange. Grey squirrels may also be introduced to a Hex Blunt.
I'm not sure on the snow cover up there, but I hope there is some in the woods to aid in the detection of movement. The initial plan will probably be to sit in stand in the morning(about 20 yards from the picture of the big eight) and I may try to make a hidey hole in one of the many blowdowns on the property in the afternoon.
I've been able to shoot with Miss Hope just about everyday this week. Daylight has been at a premium as I shoot after work at one of the county parkways.
I consider taking this bow to the woods with me an honor. Terry Green initially posted with the idea for these bows something like, "Hunting with a Purpose". There are things in life that are great only because they have been made from many smaller parts. This is one of those. I intend on making my small part the best that it can be, because this isn't about me or even for me. It is for the miracles that we call our sons, daughters, grandchildren, brothers, and sisters.
I will be launching an arrow tomorrow in honor of all of those miracles, for Voodoofires son, and for my brother (who never hunted but hunts with me everytime I'm out there)
Jerry
-
Yep, I used 35/55 GT Carbons with 50 grain brass inserts and 220 grain heads. Extremely lethal combo for my 27" draw...!
Claudia

What's happening with the gals?
Mojo bag needs fillings folks.

Arrows in the air.....story and pics to follow (A sick wife and 2 sick kids this week have limited my story telling time) I'll have an update this weekend.

We walked into the woods under the light of the waning December moon. Enough snow on the ground to make a little crunch and reflect that light back to our eyes. It is really a neat opportunity to walk through the woods without the aid of lights in the hours before dawn, to be there before the world wakes up. So my "Dreaming Time" with Hope began.
We walk in about a 1/2 mile to our honey hole. Upon arriving we always get that rude awakening of the game camera flash going off. We know it's coming but it still gets you. Makes for some interesting pictures! My brother-in-law is with me and he has another 200 yards to go to get to his tree. I climb up to my stand, strap in and bring up my pack and Hope. Do the usual fidgeting and adjusting for a few minutes and all of this without a flashlight. It is still 30 minutes to sunrise. I was quite relaxed because of the light. The imagination did not have to work very hard to figure out shapes and shapes that made sounds. Settled in and waited for the world to wake up. I have always held a special place in my heart for sunrises and sunsets, just my thing I guess. It happens everyday, but it is just for those few moments that we get to see those wonderful colors and long shadows.
It is now 7:00 a.m. and I am in predator mode. Hope is waiting patiently in my hands arrow nocked and ready. Stand up and pull her back a few times at different shooting lanes to get the feeling. It was a special doe only weekend and hunter orange was required.
Sit back down and wait....... about 8:00a.m.
I stand up and nock my dedication arrow. Look around and make sure I haven't spooked anything and then face West.
Pull back and send an arrow into the great wide open in memory. My brother-in-law who is about 200 yards away heard my arrow as it came down would later ask me it I shot at a grouse or something because he thought he heard me shoot. I just told him I heard it too but didn't know what it was either. I'll tell him someday that it was me, but right then it was my moment.
So I sat back down and waited..........about 8:30a.m. Hope and I found ourselves with ringside seats to the USFC, that's the Ultimate Squirrel Fighting Championship in case your wondering. From the West came Red Bellied Pete and the challenger from the East, Bushy Tailed Bob. They were about to square off. Pete was the first to move in on the unseen nut, but Bob was on him in a heart beat!! Pete rolled onto his back put sprang right back up at Bob and put the hurtin' on him. Bob was kicking and squawking on his back as Pete rolled him around. Finally, Bushy Tailed Bob went off a bit and chattered his taunts at Red Bellied Pete. He had lost round one. I sat down to wait......took a few more pictures. This year I have begun to take more pictures while hunting and learning a few tricks. Like how to keep a digital camera warm enough to operate. The use of a handwarmer muff and one of the charcoal body warmers with the adhesive back stuck in the muff will warm a camera up enough to make it useful. So I sat and waited............ Remember all that light when walking in the dark? Well the deer find it pretty useful as well, especially after the gun/muzzle loader seasons. So the morning ended without much fanfare but some good memories.
-
It was picture time then. About 40 yards from my stand is a good rub. Actually the stand sits just off a rub line.
Head back 30 miles to my in-laws house for some lunch and a quick nap. The nap never happened because we had a visitor. I took Hope out to the bale to shoot a bit. While shooting my brother-in-law comes out to see and at the same time we notice a black object moving out of the corn about 1/2 mile from us where one of the farmers is combining the last of the corn. "That isn't a dog.." I said. "No, it's a bear.." says my brother-in-law, and he was headed our way. Ran to get the binocs. We proceeded in a cut-off course with the bears direction. Got to within ~150 yards, but he was moving too fast. Quick uneducated quess of the bear puts him around 300-400 pounds.(could not see daylight under his belly and his head was huge) That certainly was a special treat, but no pictures.
We headed back out for the afternoon hunt. We had taken the game camera with us in the morning, and we had "photographic evidence" that all the deer in the woods had not disappeared. In fact they had been 18 yards from my stand as little as a few hours before I had arrived in the morning. Armed with that knowledge, I hunted the same stand hoping to catch a deer out a bit early. My brother-in-law chose to sit a different location. I was sitting at 2:30p.m. 2 hours till quitting time. The squirrels came back for round two. I was holding out to see if one of the grey squirrels would come for a visit, but the little red buggers is what I got. So I nocked a hex-blunt and let fly at Red Bellied Pete at about 18 yards. Missed about 12 inches above his head. He didn't even make a noise, just took off running. A few minutes later Bushy Tailed Bob came into about the same spot. I took aim and let fly. This time I missed by 3 inches to the left, and Bob put up one heck of a fit. I am convinced that the third time would have been a charm, but unfortunately I was out of blunts. Sending broadheads after squirrels just doesn't seem right to me.
The weather had warmed up quite a bit and it was a very pleasant evening to sit. I had that feeling that everything was going to sit tight and move under the brightness of the moon. So I sat back and watched the birds and listened to Pete and Bob chatter on about some issue that only squirrels know about. Even the porcupine that has a tree not 25 yards from my stand was no where to be found. It was a night of quiet reflection. Looking around, I could see evidence of a previous encounter of the antlered kind. left behind by one of our friends when confronted with the biggest deer he has ever seen.
I could see "Blowdown City.
where I had 2 doe fawns bed down 35 yards from me for 4 hours a few weeks back. Finally I could see the sun setting lower and lower until that magic time once again arrived.
I had woke the world up and put it to sleep today. I saw a bear get his lunch reservations canceled. Sent arrows after squirrels. Thought about my Dad's successful cancer surgery this year, the birth of my second daughter, the new brother that I have found in my brother-in-law, and of the children that this bow will help. Yes, it was an emotional last few moments of the day. It was a great day to be in the woods.
I am planning on getting Hope out one more time before I send her off to her next adventure. Certaintly want to get some shot opportunities for the bow.
-
Very nice indeed.
-
Great stuff! Thanks for sharing your adventure.
Claudia
-
Nice hunt Jeremy, well told.
David
-
Well written and great pics thanks.
-
Well, unfortunatley I have not been able to get "Faith" out on a hunt yet, but have been shooting her at the local range when time permits. Shoots hard and straight. Seems to like the Breast tapered shafts I'm using. Spined #63, 29" BOP with 125 grain tips. Seems to shoot anything I put through her very well.
Taking her out next Friday, Saturday, Sunday, she will then have Christmas day off and then mailed to the next lucky candidate.
Hopefully have a little Christmas weekend luck?
-
Jerry, Beautiful story,Great pictures, and I hope you know that you have found a friend at the end of that arrows path, Thank You my friend,Steve
-
Enjoyed your story Jeremy, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm convinced God does not count the time against a hunter sitting on the stand contemplating deep questions....
-
Hope's Christmas trip story coming soon.
Hope is on her way to Terry in Arizona. Should be there on Friday.
-
Thanks Jeremy.... Hope arrived here safe and sound about an hour ago...... I've got to say this is a lot of bow for a guy who's been shooting self bows and old glass longbows for so long......Smooth to draw and about 10-15# lighter than I'm used to but I'm still getting a very clean release....My only problem is my eye is set up for my bows and I'm hitting high...Way high like a foot high at 20 yards...... grouping great but I just can't get those arrows down yet..... :D I may have to try anchoring under my eye.... What's the timeline "T".....When do I have to send her back out and who does she go to??..... Terry
-
Should be a list in the case with dates and addresses Terry.
-
Thanks David......Terry

Received "Faith" from Greg on the evening of the 29th... what a beautiful bow! The arrows I wanted to try out of her fly perfect, so I took her down to southern Illinois with me for a few days. Hopefully I'll have a few stories next time I check in!
-
AZ,
Here's the guy that's next on the list.....his addy should be on the list in the case.
Jan 16 - 30 Jeremy Steflik
-
Well, I sent "Faith" off to Maryland, her next scheduled destination, today. Since I received her on the 29th of December, we have travelled and hunted in far southern Illinois, and then went out to west-central Illinois.
We had a wonderful time, with lots of days in the wilds, both sunrises and sunsets, but in the end our trophy turned out to be just that... our time spent together [which was just fine with me].
She is a beautiful bow, with great shooting characteristics, and her 60" length coupled with the take-down system make her quite a handy hunting tool. She will make a fine companion to whoever is lucky enough to give her a permenant home.
I have some pictures to post, but they're on my home computer, so I will try and get them up tonight.
-
Oh boy, I think that means shes heading my way!!!! I can't wait. When I signed up for her I was hoping to take her on a South Carolina hog hunt. That's not going to work out, but I will get her in the late season MD whitetail woods a time or two and maybe after some small game. We will see what happens. I can't wait.
Ted

Barry Loving please email me.

I did Terry...BLM

I picked Faith up at the post office this morning. Man oh Man, what an awesome sight when I opened the package. The bow is awesome. I was shooting it real good right away. Immediately took it on a walk for rabbits, jumped one, but no shot. I won't be able to get it out for deer until next Saturday, but I should get to do a few more rabbit walks. I'll keep you posted.
I gotta say, I love this bow. It is fantastic.
Ted
-
Well guys . . . I got a huntin' story. Blood fell in Maryland this afternoon.
Can anyone tell me if there is a way to get pics from the memory card to my computer? I didn't see a USB cord. I took some pics with the camera that I can print in my printer and include in the log book, but I'd like to put them here too.
Man, I like this bow.
Thanks,
Ted
-
Hope has been sent out to Jeremy..... Terry
-
All right Ted, your slacking where is the story ??
-
Ted, sent you a email and pm, let me know you got them please...Thanks, Barry
ps Shawn get ready you are going to get Faith a little earlier than scheduled! WOO HOO
-
BLM - I got it. Will send to Shawn next.
SuperK, I'm trying to figure out a way to get the pics from the memory card to the computer to put the story up. If I can't figure it out in the next day or so, I'll just tell it in text - hopefully with more to the story by then.
Ted
-
How about walmart, have them put it on disc then upload to photobucket :-)
-
Ted, ya got my addy? I am a righty but can shoot pretty good lefty if I do it for a few days. I will give it a go with this sweet bow, maybe Curt(Guru) will come up and hunt with me in a week or so. Shawn
-
I do have your addy. I think I have it through the end of the month and then I will send it up.
As for my story . . . I am likely not going to get the pics soon and I don't want to leave you hanging.
On the first day that I had Faith. I shot her for awhile then went on a small game walk. Jumped a rabbit, but no shots. Later, I snuck into a nearby woodlot. Almost immediately a squirrel climbed down and started hoppin' my way. I moved a little closer. He came runnin down the deadfall 15 yards away. Before I knew it, Faith had another kill. I threw a 2018 tipped with a 190 grain shark at the treerat and it nearly chopped it's head off. I hit is just in front of the shoulders and cut it's spine in half. It was dead immediately. Without a doubt the best shot I've ever made on a squirrel. This bow is dead silent - even with aluminums and shoots where I am looking . . . I love it.
I hope to get a chance at a MD rabbit or two in the back and I will get a chance to take it in the whitetail woods a time or two (I think).
Ted
-
Ted,
Must be the bow ! :saywhat:
-
Ted - nice shooting!
I'm anxiously awaiting Hope - along with another Horne's bow! I can't wait to get out in the woods with her!
-
I got home late from work tonight and found Hope finally arrived!! UPS was nice and left the case uncovered in the snow  , so everything is a bit damp, but I've gotta say, my bow rack hasn't looked this good since I made it! TWO Horne's side by side!
I'll keep her through the weekend (hoping to get together with another TGer on Sunday) and send her out to the next guy on the list a bit early in the hopes he'll get it to Shawn in time for the Bunny Hunt.
No need to be selfish, I'll see her at Shawn's and, afterall, I am going to win the auction! ;)
-
Hope it stops raining around here soon. If not I won't be able to get into my hunting area :( ...Van
Good Luck!
-
I packed up Hope after a chilly morning in the woods and sent her on her way a bit early. I would have liked to have had her for more than a few days, but getting her to the Bunny Hunt is far more important!
I saw over 15 deer this morning... all on the way home from the Post Office!!
-
Thanks Jeremy. I'll get it to the Bunny Hunt on time :wavey: ...Van
-
Breath easy. Hope arrived in good shape. Hope to take her out this weekend depending on the weather. I downloaded pics from the camera just in case I deleted them by mistake not being familiar with it's operation.
I don't have a clue who these strange folks are, though some look familiar :scared: :bigsmyl: ...Van

No problem getting use to this bow. It shoots just like I thought it would....perfectly (I've shot Horne bows before). After the first shot I could have put it away and been confident of taking a shot on any game animal in this part of the country. After a couple of dozen shots from 10 to 20 yards to verify that this wasn't just "different bow good shooting syndrome" I quit. Plan on taking it to the woods (if I don't get stuck) this Friday for a couple of days. Rabbits are in trouble; hogs and late season whitetail does may want to hunker down lest they be kilt :D ...Van
-
Just an update to maybe help future "users" of this bow.
When I first shot it yesterday the brace height was set at 7" (I just unwrapped the string as it was packaged and strung it up) and the nock point was set at exactly the same as I set my recurves and longbows. I did notice a bit of noise but the bow shot as well or better than what I'm use to anyway.
Knowing that the recommended brace height is 7 1/2" I corrected that this evening. My goodness what a difference. What was a great shooting bow turned into maybe the best shooting longbow I've ever shot.
That 1/2" difference in brace height made it very quiet and my group at 20 yards decreased considerably. I'm shooting 29" 2018's with a total weight of 590 grains. Point is, listen to the bowyer. They normally know what works best...Van
-
She is a sweet shooter. Look forward to your hunt story Van.
-
You mean that's all the pics in the camera?!!! :help: Surely not...
-
That's all I could find Pincone.
Stalked hogs and deer this weekend with Hope. Dang it was cold for S. Texas. Several close encounters with both but no cigar. Today was the last day for the special spike and doe season. I'll try again next weekend for hogs then she's off to the Bunny Hunt.....Van

I recieved Faith yesterday, I am a righty but can shoot lefty pretty good. I took her out and shot a 3-4" group at 12 yards. Today I took her for a walk. It was brutal cold, but I managed to shoot a mountain lion and find a treasure in the snow. My first attempt at a pic is Faith just chillin'!! by the way it was -10 with the wind chill!! (http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u233/Burger68/FaithsPictures003.jpg)
-
Nice pic bud!!

Here is my Mountain Lion: (http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u233/Burger68/FaithsPictures004.jpg)

My next pic. is of my little treasure I found, I also missed two bunnies with her. What a sweet shooter, wish I had Hope to hunt with for a day by myself! (http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u233/Burger68/FaithsPictures005.jpg)
-
Yep I figured you'd like her Shawn.Nice Pics.Good shot on that Mt. lion too.Good thing you hit where you did looks like a lousy bloodtrail.

Ok, I shot her a little the last two days, but too cold to hunt. We have had wind-chills well below zero and winds gusting to 40mph. I will try and hunt her tomorrow afternoon for a bit. Shawn
-
I bought Faith to Toll Gate today which is an indoor 3D shoot. JCSnapshot wanted to give her a go and he is a lefty and shot a round with her. Well he shot his best round in a long time with her. He took 14th. out of about 100+ rounds that were shot. Curt is gonna post a pic. here in a little while, I hope!! Shawn
-
Thanks Terry, Horne Bows, and Shawn for bringing her today.I have ben shooting "poorly" to say the least. After my first round today, I shot about 25 or 30 arrows with "Faith", then shot her for a score at Tollgate. I turned in a score (218 of 300) that was 65 points higher than my first round score :) Still a tad off last years average, but hoping that she gave me back the confidence that has become very lacking in the last few weeks.
Thanks again to everyone involved in making "Hope" and "Faith" available to shoot, and best of luck to all who are on the list to shoot these beauties.

Shawn,

At this point they must be 2nd Day Aired to Curtis Kellar....and they need to leave today, if they can't go out till Monday, they'll have to be shipped NEXT DAY AIR.
Curtis Kellar......1573 Ckodre RD.....Runge, TX 78151
The gals MUST be shipped as stated above, or they will not make the TX Sweat.
-
Terry, I had no info on were to send them. My e-mails got kicked back and the last thing I had on them was that I had them thru Feb. and to send out by the first week in March. They will be in Texas by Tuesday! Thanks! Shawn

-
I need to know where to send Faith??????? Thanks! Curtis
-
Al and Aaron suposedly swapped out.....I told them to work it out, that it was fine with me......I've emailed Al and I haven't heard back.
-
does this mean Hope's on the way to me ? Wish i could have killed that bird Saturday with her (although it was my first kill with that Kaibab so it needed breaking in)---guess I'll have to hold out killing anymore turkeys till she gets here...
-
Joel......yes, Hope is on the way to you soon.
-
Don't get too attached to her though. LOL I got the opportunity to shoot her at the SWEAT and well... We were made for each other. :D
-
too late, it was love at first sight. I'm already mentally checking off the places i'm NOT gonna hunt till she arrives
-
Sorry Terry, but I have been in the woods off and on since Saturday. :bigsmyl: Haven't spent too much time on the 'puter.
I got a VM from Curtis and left him VM's at two numbers when I returned the call.
I consented to swap weeks with "themonkey" and replied to his PM requesting it, however, I never heard back from him. Not sure what is going to happen with regards to the swapping of time spots for Faith. I'll take her whenever I can get her if that helps.
-
anybody know where Hope is ? Clock's already ticking on my turn and i haven't seen her yet.
-
Yeah.....meant to tell ya....hold on a bit Joel.
-
Picked up Faith this morning at the PO and could hardly wait to get done with errands and get back home to shoot her. Had to have some lunch first though :D then a friend dropped by before I could get the package opened. The visit took awhile but I finally had my moment alone with her. I found everything in order and opened her diary to scan through it while torn between wanting to shoot her and read the entries. I read the first one by Danny Spencer and among many of the things he reported was that he found Faith liked the 55/75 carbons with the 100 gr. inserts. Wouldn’t you know I had a dozen of them just like that and that’s all it took for me to put the diary down and string her up.
I checked her for nock square and she is set at one half inch above square which is about an eighth higher than I have most of my bows. She is also a little lighter than my fat girls but she sure was smooth to pull. :)
I grabbed 6 of the carbons and placed my target at a pre-measured 20 yards. My first two rounds of 6 were both about 6 inches low but were holding tight. OK, I said to myself, I just have to get to know her and learn how to hold her. Maybe it’s because I am used to shooting 60#+ bows. My groups moved up and stayed tight with the exception of a few wanderers because of a poor release on my part.
This is a shot of my fourth group because the first three didn’t deserve having their picture took. ;)

Here is my 6th and last 7th group right before a thunderstorm was fixin’ to let loose on my head. I had a couple of wanderers in my last group but am tickled with how she shoots.

Now if I can only get a tom within my range and I don’t choke I’m going to add some turkey feathers to the medicine bag.
WOW, I sure do like this Horne bow. How long does it take to get one after ordering one anyway? :bigsmyl:
-
I talked to Al yesterday not long after she arrived...he was giggling like a lil kid while reading the diary of all her past adventures.
I've got faith we'll see a hero pic here soon...
And Al, Mark has some in stock :saywhat:
-
got the package last night, turned on the lights and shot my standing turkey target, three shots from different distances, prolly less than ten to a little over twenty yards, coulda covered all three with my palm with room left over----this one's a shooter for me, grip feels like it was made for my hand and it liked my AD's.
talked to one of my scouts today and looks like me and Hope are gonna "commence hostilities" about daylight tomorrow....
-
Joel,
I will be bringing Faith to the Appling Festival, will her sister be there too? :)
-
Go get em Joel and Al!!!!
If I wasn't already so dang bow poor, I would have already gotten Mark to build me one just like Faith!!!!
She's 'bout the only woman I ever got along with that well!! :bigsmyl:
Good luck to Y'all!!!! Be sure and post pics! Lot's of pics!!! :archer:

DOG DAY AFTER....uhh MORNING
Thursday a.m. and it's hovering in the mid-thirties, i'm running a little late and it's breaking day as i set up near the same place i shot my opening day bird.
first crow gets a tom going about three hundred yards away, across a county dirt road from my setup. i give a little flydown and that bird and two others rattle hellos---cool, three boys gobbling fifteen minutes into the hunt----and one of 'em's only a hundred yards or so down the oak ridge
i let 'em holler and juice up for about fifteen more then call again. the nearest bird pitches out and lands just out of sight over a little hump. i cluck twice and he's coming fast over my right shoulder and my fingers tighten on the bowstring as i turn to line up for the shot. he breaks cover about thirty yards out and he runs right on past me and the decoys ??? i'm watching him go when i catch movement out of the corner of my eye and, turning back to the right, see a pretty little beagle coming right in the bird's tracks--scratch the first tom.
i gave it thirty minutes to calm down, started with a couple of clucks, purred into a yelp and another bird gobbles from just the other side of the county road, probably two hundred yards distant. i go quiet and in ten minutes he's standing fifty yards away, looking intently at my decoys---man, what a brush ! that beard looks a foot long and thick as your wrist ! the bird's head starts to bounce up and down, still looking my way, and i catch a glimpse of light color beyond the decoys just as he hauls tail ! this time it's a sheperd cross, apparently following the beagle's trail from a half-hour earlier...
Hope was ready to strike, the birds were trying to cooperate, beautiful weather---sometimes it's just not meant to be---but there's always tomorrow !
-
Dogs have messed up a many a hunt like that. Best of luck to ya Joel.
-
so uh......what kinda alums does miss faith like?
-
How does one get selected to try one of these bows?
-
There was a sign-up after the auction last year Jerry. Keep your eyes open after this years auction for a new opportunity.
-

Joel,
I'm back!!! Sorry to keep you hanging. I haven't been able to get here for a while and it feels like coming home to read a bit and see my friends again.
-
Attention Todd Weldon I need an address to ship Faith to. :bigsmyl:
-
Faith is on her way to Kentucky to Jeff Dorris.
I sure enjoyed her visit and hate to report we were not successful at getting a tom despite some opportunities I still cannot believe I didn't capitalize on. Faith did what she was supposed to do but Al forgot some very basic shooting elements.
-
I am anxiously awaiting her and will let everyone know when she arrives . :bigsmyl:
-
Good luck Jeff!!!
Al, at least you got a chance!!! That's what it's all about!!! Great shooting little bow, ain't she????
-
well guys she showed up today need to get some time to shoot her . I will report about later on when i get to get it all together .
-
Jeff and Brian.....I need for you two to send the bows and cases to me at the end of your sessions so I can get them ready to go to the winners of the auction.
Thanks.
This has been a very special effort, and a great journey theses 'gals' have been on.
-
the right handed bow (hope, i believe) has arrived in montana (5-16 wed) yesterday afternoon. I need to find some arras and plan a bear hunt on the west side of the state for next week.
I'm in the middle of a move and such so I won't be on here much.
Terry when you say brian you mean me right and by the way, when does my date with hope end? (2wks I believe)
thanks to all involved!!!
-
Yep......you're the Brian.....yep, two weeks, no worries.....I'll need to ship her out to the winner the 2nd week in June....you got plenty of time to kill a bear.
Best of luck to ya.
-
Great stories! Been following all along.
Would sure love to be part of something like this in the future...Good luck to the remaining hunters!
-
Better get signed up on this years list for the new Hope and Faith Derek. Give JC a PM.
-
Good to see you back Vermontster :wavey:

Stay tuned......Hope and Faith 2007 are coming around soon...for another year of adventure.
-
What is the procedure for getting on the list for this year's bows ?
-
A big THANK YOU and a round of applause for Mark and Sandy Horne for donating two bows that could generate that kind of money for the kids!!!
