I'm sorry to be the one to report that our brother Mike Mitten's wife Paula lost her battle with cancer this morning. She was at home with friends and family. Email messages can be sent here on this site or directly to Mike at mittenm@comcast.net Cards, flowers, etc. can be directed to him at 11184 Wadsworth Road, Beach Park, IL 60099
Mike is a quiet and modest man and doesn't know I'm making this announcement but I'm sure he would appreciate your thoughts, prayers and condolences. Mike does have insurance but his medical bills will still be substantial. If any of you are thinking about buying Mike's recent book "One With The Wilderness", that he dedicated to Paula, now would be a good time to order it. They can be ordered from our brothersofthebow website or directly through Mike via email or postal mail at the above address. I would also like to especially thank each of you bowhunters here on Tradgang for your support and prayers extended to both Mike and Paula. God bless each of you and every member of your families.
Sorry to hear this news. I don't have the words nothing replaces a loved one. Joe
I'm very sorry to hear that, my son and I met Mike along with you and Barry a couple of years ago at Denton Hill. You all seemed like real nice guys. We'll have the Mitten family in our thoughts and prayers. Rob
My deepest condolences to Mike for the loss of his bride and for all of the family members.
May memories of her be cherished by all those blessed by her presence.
Knowing that she is now in the arms of our Lord may we all be filled with joy and look forward to our time of rendezvous with Him.
Amen.
God bless, David Camp
My Prayers go out to Mike. Words can not describe what I am feeling. I bought one of Mikes books last night at the WI Trad Archers Banquet. I asked someone where Mike was and they said is wife was ill. I did not know how serious it was.
I think we can do something here to help Mike out. Is there some way that we can hold a auction of sorts. I will gladly donate something for this.
Mike....our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in your time of loss. May God bring peace and healing to your family quickly.
Gene...thank you for the update.
All you tradgangers do your part and order Mikes book to help support Mike and his family... "One With The Wilderness"... MY order is on the way.

That's very sad news. I will ask prayers for the Mitten family.
I haven't met any of you ppl in person, but this is what is so special about this forum. It is like the musketeers of old. All for one and one for all.
I am sorry to hear about his wife Paula.
I can donate something too if it will help. I have a brand new Kanata bow quiver I would put into the auction.
Just some recent statisics and this is not to be rude it's just to be aware of. I have an aunt and uncle that were battling it...my uncle lost and my aunt lost a breast and isn't out of the woods yet either.
American cancer society has just announces that they predict that by 2010 - 2011 1 in 2 ppl will be diagnosed with cancer.
Cancer numbers from the past:
Source: American Cancer Society
1960: 1 in 300
1990: 1 in 75
2006: 1 in 3
They all tend to agree it's from our lifestyle now. Too fast paced, not enough nutrition in our diets, to much stress, too much pollution, lack of sleep, less exercise etc.
Only 17% of American eat 2 or more servings of fruit a day and the recommended daily doesage has risen from 3-5 when I was young to 7-9 now.
Anyway I care about ppl and I think most of us really don't watch what we eat enough and get daily exercise. I hope you look at the info and do something about it FOR yourself ok.

Thank all again, and lets make St. Judes Auction a success this year, even in poor ecconomic times. I would like to leave you with a quote from the "Return to Blanco Canyon" chapter in my book:
"A hunter can control very little in the natural world. I did not feel helpless, but nonetheless still sought to manage my emotions and come to terms with the undesirable outcome I was dealt. With no one there to discuss what just happened to me that morning, I walked the twenty yards to the bull's bed and lay my hand on the compressed soil to feel his warmth. His odor hung heavy in the air and I drew it in my nose to further connect with the beast that narrowly escaped my draw. Sitting against an aspen tree, I stretched my legs across the elk's bed and just let my mind drift with thoughts other than elk.
I wondered what my wife and kids were doing, I hoped all was going smoothly at home in my absence. I am truly blessed to have an understanding family that accepts my life's passion for the hunt. My wife Paula understood my love for the outdoors long before we married, and she has never tried to change me. I would not be able to tromp around the wilderness for two or three weeks at a time without a love based on mutual trust. Some of her friends would ask her, referring to me, "Why do you let Mike go on all those hunting trips while you have to stay home with the kids?" Paula took great pride in her reply, "Mike can come and go as he wishes. His joy is my joy. We have uncompromising trust. I get to go on vacations with my sisters in Florida or Texas and I don't worry at all about Mike taking care of the kids while I'm gone. Don't get me wrong, we do miss each other while we're apart, but that just makes us appreciate each other that much more. Giving someone a gift makes the giver feel good as well. I feel great about giving Mike a gift of time to hunt. I only ask that he brings me back something; and he usually does. I feel sorry for other couples that don't have the kind of love and relationship that we have." Marriages bent on forced changes, control, and guilt usually don't last long. It's quiet times of reflection that I crave..." Mike
Mike,
We have never met but I have seen you many times at Kalamazoo and have all you've done except your new book, but I wanted to tell you how sorry I am for your loss.
Your comment from the new book above, has really hit home to me. I have the same situation and didn't even realize it. Thank you for opening my eyes to the blessing I have at home.
Thank you and our prayers are with you.
Richard
Prayers up for the Mitten family. Most of us that have read the book and this thread will probably be more patient and give and extra hug or two having been inspired by your story.
God speed.
I hear you mike. Deb (my wife) and I are quite similar. I went to OZ for 7 weeks 2 years ago. She knew I wanted to go for years and finally I made the time to go. I worked a few odd jobs to pay for it all and I went. I missed her and she missed me, but with e-mail and Skype we kept in touch. Not once did she need to worry about infidelity or anything...just couldn't do that to her anyway.
I worried about her being at home alone, but I have great friends that invited her for dinners and lunches and checked in on her in my absence.
I take extended trips on my bike and she never complains either.
Then when she wanted to go with her friends and she went....took her a bit and lots of encouragement from me too but she finally went. She had a great time and plans more of them now.
We go places together too don't get me wrong, but she knows I like to experience ppl and places (she is kind of a loner and doesn't like lots of ppl around).
I have changed a bit I guess, but it's never been because she wanted or expressed the change or needed it to happen.
I don't understand the ppl that would ask that of her anyway. What business is it of theirs.
We have a great marriage. Went out for 5 months and married after the 8th month, have 3 wonderful kids and been married going on 28 years.
We have had some rough times (money related mostly), but who hasn't but we were never going to give up trying this together. I am glad you had a wife that was so understanding and that she had a husband that was too. You see we can't please everyone and if you really think about it...Most people don't really care about us that much anyway..sure our REAL friends do...so why do so many ppl worry about what other ppl think.
You are blessed and have been blessed and you are blessing other ppl with your way of life....
Jer Bear of the frozen north.
You and your family are in my prayers. May God's peace keep you.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, Mike.

Mike -
I was in my shop today tearing down a machine that borke down unexpectedly, that really put me in a bind in my little corner of the world. I had read about your wife early this morning and that really kept me in check about how small my mechanical breakdown really was.
I am glad to read you enjoyed a mutual love of a lifetime, although it was not as long as one would hope.
I pray that peace and comfort are near to you and your family always.
Regards, Charles

Mike, My wife Nancy and I spent the afternoon at our sons house along with some of our grandkids and one great grand daughter. We celebrated my sons birthday which is today, and mine which is next week.
Nancy and I had our 50th anniversary just last month. I feel so blessed to have such a great wife and a wonderful family. I know my heart would break if I were to lose any one of them.
I am so sorry for your loss.
Prayers are on the way Gene. What a terrible thing, god bless Mike's family. I too will be ordering his book. Thanks Gene for the heads up.
Mike,
I'm SO sorry to hear you are separated from Paula... even if only for a season. I have prayed for Paula since I met you at Kalamazoo. Tonight, I pray for you and all your family.
Seeing the strength of the testimony of your life, I am reminded of two Scriptures as you face today...
I know you grieve, but not "as others do who have no hope" (1 Th. 4:13) and...
"You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed upon You, because he trusts in You.
Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock." (Isa.26:3-4)
Blessings to all of you,
Daryl
Mike I don't know you but the Trad Gang is a brotherhood of sorts and we are all fellow travellers in life's journey. From a fellow traveller, my heart goes out to you as well as my prayers.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family Mike.
Whenever I lose someone I try to look at the way that they changed my life, what did they teach me and how can I become a better person from the lesson that they taught me? I think this is the best way that we can keep their memory alive, by being that much better because of knowing them. From what I have read from your book I know that you will do this for Paula. I know the days ahead will be tough, but I have faith that you and your family will find peace with Paula's passing.
God Bless,
Allan

Just learning the sad news this AM. I've not had time to read any of the previous posts except the one on this page. I'm struck by several random thoughts.
First, having got to know Mike the last couple years, he is a first class gentleman and I feel very sorry for him and his family. Second, his wife had to be a saint for allowing Mike such leeway to follow his heart to the wild country for extended outings each fall. That's one aspect of true love in my opinion. Third, I am glad Mike was able to get his book published with the heartfelt dedication to Paula before her death. This public sharing of his love and respect for his wife speaks volumes.
And finally, I have often been dismayed by how quickly life just picks up and Time marches on after these events. I don't truly know what an appropriate mourning period is, but I do know that we will all quickly get back to the demands of this world in short order. Let's be mindful of all our friends who have suffered losses and include them in our thoughts, prayers, and activities. The hurt for them can linger for a long time after we've already moved on.
May God be with their family at this time and always.
Bryce
I am so sorry for you and your loved ones.

I have the great pleasure of knowing Mike and calling him my friend. He is a good and decent man and I'm deeply proud to call him my friend.
For the past few months my son Tanner and I have prayed for Paula and her family. Every night Tanner reminds me to pray for Mikes wife. He always asks God to bless Paula and to bring her peace and comfort.
I believe that "Tanner's" prayers have come true. Mike I love you my friend, my brother.
Please find comfort in the knowing that Paula rests gently cradled within the loving arms of our Lord.

My condolences and prayers to you and your family Mike, God be with you.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Mike-Reading this breaks my heart. My family lost my Mother-in-law to breast cancer a year ago last Christmas. I know what it is like for your family. I can't imagine what it is like for you. My husband and I will be in prayer for you all. Wrap your arms around your children. I know how much we needed that from our father(Even though we are in our 30's).
Tradgang-Lets stand up and fight this evil we all call cancer! 1 in 3 is not right. It is easy to get involved. Check out American Cancer Society, Komen for a Cure, etc... Money, time, whatever it takes. Lets fight so no one else looses a wife, husband, father, mother, child, sister, brother, friend. It is time to get mad and not let cancer win anymore.
Sorry to hear about your loss.

What a wonderful day it will be when you get to be with her again. Your amazing faith is inspiring. May God be with you and yours forever. T
I have hesitated to post on this thread, but I just got back from the funeral. I would like all of you to know it was VERY clear how much Paula Mitten was loved. From the hundreds of pictures of her life at the funeral home, to the packed church for the mass (which Mike's brother flew in from Belize to preside over), to the FULL police escort of the procession to the cemetery. Mike has a wonderful family and friends and they will all be there for him.
Count on it "brother" :campfire:
Well said Steve!! Mike is glad to have friends like you buddy!! :campfire:
