Spring is around the corner and I always catch myself thinking of years ago in the late 80's and 90's of the Southeastern Traditional Championships in Elberton, Ga at the Hood family farm. We were all blessed to meet great traditional bowhunters and familys from Fl,NC,SC,AL,Tn,TX,MS and of coarse GA. One of my fond memories is watching ole Dan Quillian holding court at the practice range. Most Traditional shoots today if they know it or not were patterned from this shoot. John Hood was first to bring in the "hunting" foam shot. He perfected the Jerry Hill running shots ( that didn't break). The first guy I ever met was a guy named Wayne..he stuck his big paw out after swapping his Biggie tea to other hand and said "Howdy".........Anybody else out there have any fond memories of this by gone shoot? I'd love to hear them
I loved to shoot the running skunk!!! I think..:)I remember instintive archer magazine shoot stories...think I saw ur mug in there Joey.. :) :goldtooth:
Unfortunately I never made it to that shoot Joey. Wish I would have. :(
I attended the shoot the last 4 years it was held at the Hood property. It was a great shoot. I saw a lot of people that were on the various forums. Surprise, surprise, I never attended the shoot with the same bow two years in a row! :)
Bill
I remember you kicking b**t with the recurves JoeB! I think it was a Scherinsky or something like that right? I loved that shoot and all the fine people that were there!
The 1st year we had about 20 trad guys and 4 compounders. Man did it take off after that.
How long ago was it? I have footage of Joey and Greg Campbell in a shootoff for 1st place in the recurve division. The camera was the one where you put the whole VHS tape inside!
Talk about some great shooters! We had 'em!
It was the first shoot I ever went to that had vendors. Bows everywhere!!!All I had ever shot were the two bows I owned and I was like a Kid at Christmas.I met A lot of folks those couple of days.Met Shuster there as well. I had more hair than him then too..don`t remember the scores but I probably beat Biggie....RC
Do ya'll remember Jean Marie! he was the little frenchman that set up his Medieval Bow display then took a nap ON his card table during mid day. Talk about a low pressure sellsman.
Spanky..i ain't what i once was but Biggie still is!
The Georgia State shoot is this weekend.
That sounds like a great shoot. I was a member of the Tomo Chi Chi bowman a few years back. At that time we did not refer to ourselves as traditional. Everyone seemed to shoot about the same type of equiptment, L
I never made it to that one, but I shot with John Hood the year he won the Howard Hill World Championship in Wilsonville, AL. John shot a 90# Quillian Longhunter, and the only wood he found that was strong enough was ramin hardware store dowels. I was able to supply him with Superceders when we got in production.
A few years later, John and DD Quillian (Dan's son) and I shot together at the first North Carolina State Traditional shoot. That was in about '98, as well as my feeble brain can remember. A NC shooter took first, John took second, and DD took third, beating me on the last target! Naturally, they only gave trophies for the first three. I was there representing Longbows & Recurves Magazine, selling subscriptions.
That was soon after Dan had his foot cut off, and he attended the shoot in shorts and his artificial leg. Dan was not shy!
Dang Joey! You remeber Jean-Marie. Oh thats right . You had a crush on him down at the Paradise when he stood on the table and brushed his hair!!!! I still talk to Jean as he lives in Greenville SC now. He is a blast for sure. My favorite memory of the SE was shooting and trying to keep my concetration with that big old gobbler strutting and gobbling on top of the house. For sure one of the most pictuesque range we have ever shot. Get ready cause rumor has it , it will return next year although at a different location.
I was wondering what happened Jean-Marie Beaugouis, Last time I saw him he was making and selling "Excaliber Medevil Arrows". I thought maybe he went back to Coursica..We took a bow making class together back in 1994 with Tom Stanley and JJ Guidry. I Never made it to the Elberton shoots but Tom Stanley always talked about it and how much fun they were.
Don, ol DD knocked me out of the top spot 3 years in a row! He was a competitive rascal!
Let's see....if DD beat me 3 years running, and I finished 2nd all three years, I don't think ol RC made the cut....but I will say this, he's learned well :-)
Jeffro..forgot about the Hoods pet gobbler!!!!!! I was shooting with Monty Browning down the trail 1 the first time he heard it. He dropped his bow arm and looked around at me and I asked "you think you can get us permission to hunt here..This place is full of gobblers!"......Jean Marie is only guy I knew that can shoot a bow heavier than himself.
It was one of the great shoots. I have many fond memories of it. I loved the up and down hill shots. Who can forget the buck chasing the doe and you had to shoot both before they stopped. The charging boar and the running pig in the ditch were fun as was the flying turkey. That gobbler sure did love to sound off!
I got to shoot with Keith Banes and Monty Browning at the shoot. I remember when Ron Weatherman shot a perfect score on a championship round. I can't begin to list all the fine people I meet at that shoot. Everyone wanted their name on the rock. What a great idea that was.
I didn't start shooting there until about 93, but I shoot every one they had after that to number 15 the last one. I wish they still had it, but I understand how much work and time it took. I want to give a big "THANK YOU" to the Hood family for hosting us all those years.
Great memories! Watching Mudcat Fogal getting frustrated so he'd keep going back and repay so he could shoot again. I don't think he ever did win the thing did he? Met Danny Williams, RIP, there, with whom I shared many hunts and who became like family to me. Had a blast when Joebuck and I designed a bunch of TBG shirts and sold them off a card table about fifteen years ago. Learned a lot watching ole Ron Weatherman come in from shooting and just keep shooting thousands of arrows with perfect form. Made too many friends there to keep up with. I hope someday Joel Smith can resurrect this shoot and get it back to the status it once enjoyed.
Oh, I forgot to mention how enjoyable it is watching Durante shoot too. There aren't enough ooos in smooth to describe the way he shoots a selfbow. Plus you could always count on Monty Browning to show up with an exploding arrow, a take-down arrow, a two-pound arrow or some such. His fertile mind never quits working. I miss all the folks I don't see anymore.
Glad this post has been brought up! My friend get tired of hearing me talk about the South Eastern Championship. We had lots of fun their and it was a beautiful place to shoot! I met many fine archers their that really knew how to shoot well. Learned alot from those fellas who had their name on the "Rock" We used to leave North Carolina and pray we would get our names imortilized on the Famous "Rock"
The Hoods are great friends of ours that I don't get to see nearly enough. I went to every shoot from 1998 until it ended. Ole Dan Quillian was always on site and a joy to talk with. I always liked Dan Q. after seeing him at the Georgia Buckerama back in the 1980s
I will try and post a few pics from the last few time we attended if I can find them.
Doug .. is that you the Bee Keeper? Man ole man you were a blast to be around. No one had more fun than you. You had a quiver made out of a german shepard hide or something didn't you? Schuster, no one could sell shirts like we could. I never told you this but i had to dip into the t-shirt pile 3 times because I got hot dog mustard on the shirt of the moment. Ron Weatherman!!! class act all the way around. Tons of fun folks from FL. that supported that shoot for years. Only shoot i know, your gaurrentee to loan out a set of booster cables!
The Folks who made it happen. Mr. and Mrs. Hood (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d22/johndill/elberton.jpg)

Finally got good enough to win the last year the shoot was held. Left Shawn, John, and Eddie Francisco
Bottom John and Parnell Oliver. Parnell was one of the best archers I've seen.

John Dill those pictures make me feel kind of homesick! Sort of wish I had taken more pictures of everyone.
Joebuck, it was a fox, and i wish I didn't let someone talk me into selling it. The Hoods almost ran out of space on the rock because your name was on it so many times!
Matt thanks for the compliment. I always enjoyed your company, and whenever I see your name under a story title it brings a smile to my face. I'm sorry to hear about Danny I liked him too! I guess he is hunting with Dan Quillian now.
In 91 I drove to Athens because I wanted to go back to the bows I started with and missed when the compound hooked me for a number of years. I came away with one of Dan's used bamboo longhunters, and never regretted it. Thanks Dan for helping to keep the spirit of the bow alive, and all you did for bowhunting in the South.
The Hoods put on a great shoot in a great bit of woods. Like Matt I miss all the fine folks that gathered there.
Anybody else?
I still miss this shoot. I can relate to telling guys about this shoot that never got to go. I was looking at some of the pictures I have a few months ago. Great memories. Really enjoyed those moving targets. That was one of the things that set it apart from other events.
Bob Jones has his name on the "Senior" rock a few times. Mr. Jones is still making bows. Now in addition to T/D bows he's building Hill style LBs and one piece recurves. All of them are mighty fine shooters.
Bill
Bob Jones has been a great friend of ours for many years! I really like shooting with Bob. He's one heck of a shot too!
Interesting side note here.......John Hood won the "first" really big shoot in the south 1990ish,what was before ASA now but called "wayne Pearson's shoot in Valdosta Ga. John won the Traditional class with his long bow. All the targets were 30-40 yards long wide open with lawn mower kind of cut look. Totally NOT a hunting shot.. So he went home and created the Southeastern Championships at "Traditional " hunting yardage ..25 yards and in.. most were close bushy type shots where the BOWHUNTER had to kneal or stretch or something!...No one in the south or country was setting up a shoot like John did. For the most part Traditional Archery Shoots hadn't taken off but it was fixin to explode. Most Trad guys didn't go to compound shoots because they were tired of the waiting or went and waited!!!.. McKenzie just came out with their targets. John borrowed the money and bought the best.. Jerry Hill at the same time had been putting on a successful moving , flying , running, and crazy tournamnet for several years in Wilsonville Al. No doubt he influenced John on his shots but John's targets didn't break!!.........if you liked punching foam...those were great times in early 90's... The Hoods provided a great place for us to find our Trad brothers....
gosh those pics bring back fond memories! That gobbler they had was a hoot!
Anyone remember going down the road for seafood??
I loved the shots in the rocks John had every year. Made lots of great friends there and will always think of "MR HOOD" whittling those unreal arrow points out of wood.
Remember all the chicken quarters that got grilled at that shoot!
We would take over the Waffle house in the mornings in Elberton. My buddy Mudcat would order "Fresh" orange juice every year and the waitress would pry open a can of Donald Duck right in front of him after she shook it about 20 times. He would come unglued and miss the first three targets just me laughing about it. I shot with a rough crew though...Hiters, Daulers and Snells...they were my buddys.
I remember my first time going to the shoot and when we got to the two deer you shoot at one pass. I was thinking oh *!. Missed them both but it was fun. Then I watched a guy in the group behind us with a pair of overalls on and a big chew in his mouth proceed to hit both targets. Don't recall his name.
I was at the Southeastern the last 5 or 6 years. Probably my all time favorite shoot each year. The ranges were the best I've ever shot. The running wolf that was shot with a long bungee cord, the running buck and doe, the goats in the rocks with cedar splinters all around and don't forget the ticks! More seed ticks than should be allowed anywhere. Too bad there wasn't room for camping on the grounds but a waterfront campsite over looking the lake at the state park wasn't too bad.
The last time I saw Dan there was after he lost his leg. Didn't slow him down too much.
I have a bunch of pictures here somewhere......
Looking at some of my old pictures and a few of the people on them. One of them is a group picture of winners. Some of the faces I recognize are DD Quillian, Linda Graham, Doug Durant, Kieth Bain, and a lot of others. There was a couple of guys that came from Conneticut one year I was there.
Since we are all around the campfire :campfire: what happened why arent they still doing this ...I have made a few 3D shoots in other places ...the one thing that kills shoots is not having enough volenteers, people that will donate there time getting things ready to make a Shoot , happen...for over 13 years,I think we have had some great shoots in Baton Rouge...but I loved reading and talking to Keith Baine , Rick Welch , and others about some of these shoots...my son was 10 when we started he is Sr. in high school and still talks about it, and how me and my buddy had so much fun... :goldtooth: God Bless....the good things guys!!!!
Two Hatchet, I emailed you about that picture you have. I sure would love to have a copy, and I hope the email gets to you. I don't have many pictures and after so many years of going there you would of thought I would have.
Biggie
Get those pics posted!

ANOTHER 2nd place finish for me...DRATS!
Thanks for posting those Biggie. Doug I will work on getting you a copy of the pics.
Two Hatcket, Thanks that will mean a lot to me. I'll reimburse you any cost. It was 97 when I ended up with that group in your pictures.
Biggie, I think 93 or 94 was the first year I shot there. It was the fall of 91 when I returned to shooting real bows.
Doug, checked my emails and got your message. I think it was 93 or 94 when I first shot there too. Are you still shooting primitive style bows.
Nice pics Biggie. Thanks for sharing them.
Two Hatchet I do still enjoy and shoot my homemade English longbows. Aside from my 2 English Longbows I also shoot several fiberglass bows including a Dan Quillian Patriot Recurve, a Fredrick R/D longbow, and a Robertson Purist Hill style longbow. I am currently tillering a Bamboo backed Osage with a Purpleheart handle I have in the works.
My Yew ELB, and Fredrick Longbow are the two bows I shoot the most followed by the Patriot. Lately I have devoted my shooting to the Robertson Purist Hill style, but that may change when I finish this BBO.
I might get good if I would stick with just one bow, but I guess I'll save my fidelity for my bride of 36 years. My bows don't seem to mind if I flirt and spend time with another bow!
I have often regretted I didn't have a picture of the 97 winners. I got to shoot with Ron Weatherman and Keith Bain on Saturday. I was a bit intimidated at first, but loosened up and edged Ron out by 1 point on the second round course. Keith won the longbow, and had the highest overall score, but Ron shot the only perfect score, and did that on the Sunday championship round to win recurve. Somehow I ended up getting a Primitive place on the rock. It must have been the company I shot with that rubbed off on me that year. It was one of those memories to look back on thanks to the Hoods and their Robin Hood range.
Doug that just answered one of my questions. I was trying to figure out who some of the other shooters were on the pics. Ron was one of the guys in Question. He was one of the Florida guys if I remember right. I don't think I've seen him since the Robin Hood shoots.
Biggieeeeeeee.........it was 1992...my trophy was bigger and longer in 93  Look how skinny we were......DD hasn't changed a bit.
Yes Ron is one of the Florida TBOF group. He was President of TBOF at the time, and one fine shooter and gentleman. He is a top notch hunter too.
I shot against a couple of top Florida shooters on Sunday in the primitive group. Tom Stanley was the previous year's winner, and fine self bowyer. I think Jim Jones from FL placed second, and Mike T? got 3rd in primitive. Todd Slater won youth and shot with the same group as I did on Saturday.
Yep...DD looks the same today as he did then.
That looks like Big Brian Harvey in the background. Fourth from the lefy is Chuck Booth. I'll need some help with the other guys????
That's not one of the Dauler boys at the far right, is it???
Doug Dauler on the right shooting a Choctow Chief by the late Bobby Lofton
Mike "Trigger" Kenney with kakhi shorts on when he use to shoot Right handed before he found his dominant eye!
No that's not Dougie in the DD picture....
he's too tall ..your right.
And that's Chuck Bolding not Chuck Booth.
I remember shooting a round with some tall guy from Clemson named Monty. He was shooting solid glass fish arrows out of his 90 pound longbow. He gave a demo on the toughness of his arrows by placing one on his bowstring and taking aim and releasing at a big boulder 15 yards away. Took the arrow some time to make it to the target but when it finally did it bounced halfway back intact. "That's cool Monty." Monty says, "Wait...one more!" Unbeknownst to myself and others in the group, this arrow had a blasting cap on the tip. The arrow struck the boulder dead center and then created one heck of a racket with the ensuing explosion. All around the course you could hear people yelling "that Monty!" Guess they had seen him do that before.

This was definately at Hoods and the date on the back says 1992 but it wasn't the Southestern. Didn't we have a club challenge or something?
cool thread guys :clapper:
My first time I shot with Ed Sandefur. I havn`t seen him in years.I met Trigger there as well. I think he had a stroke? does anyone know how he is doing.
I have met and shot with Mr. Weatherman and he is a very good shot. Also A fellow named Parnell Oliver from Fla.Good people.Tom Swift and Thom Rogers as well.RC
I missed 92. That was the year I had my hip replaced. I do recognize several people though. great memories. I surely miss shooting with my old gang. Durwood Fuller, Keith Woods, Rick Petusky, Gilbert Peel, G Ralph Harper, Johnny Holt and even old Dee Stephens. We even let Big Wind hang around when he wasn't shooting so good. We all started in 1991.
Yeah, Jeff. The last time I saw Dee he came to the banquet wearing an Australian drover coat and cowboy hat and had a gal on his hip wearing the same outfit.
I think they rode off into the sunset together.
Yeah Ray, they rode off into the sunset but she couldn't hang with Dee. He is still bouncing around New Mex and Arizona.
I miss Maggie ( dee's girl) with that nip gin on her breath.
Doug, I'm having some copies of the pics made for you. Will try to pick them up Wednesday. Will get your mailing adress so I can send them to you. Keep the comments coming.
Cool pics Biggie!!!

Remember this shot? Those are genuine Krispy Kreme donut boxes. I don't know what happened to the donuts......
Krispy Kreme box was full before Biggie shot the target. Krispy Kreme box was empty when the next group arrived at the target. As G. Fred would say, "hmmmm".
That was a cool target. I haven't been to a shoot that had as many thoughtful targets as the SE. We shot that one out of a stand if I remember right. Yep I remember Biggie with crumbs all over his shirt that morning. At first we thought we heard his belly grumbling alll over the range but then discovered it was just a pe off bear.
There are lots of dents in that barrell! You could hear it all over the course, BONG!!!
Under the shed at halftime. Lotsa young fellas!
thats greg Campbell in the middle talking to me with my best Conway Twitty hairdo....i can remeber the conversation now....."yeah, Joebuck , you cut me in on some good MS Delta duck hunting and I'll let you drag my dead hogs out of my swamp!"
Great post guys. I also remember a group from Tennessee, the olde farts club and they would all have on club tee shirts. Doug I will get your pics mailed friday. I always screw up trying to post pics. I will see if I can get some help to get some on here.
2nd from the left is Brian Harvey. The lady at the table is......Lois Farmer??? She was a heckuva good shot.
Great post, I got into trad. archery too late to attend Elberton. I shoot with the Olde Fartes and many of the members speak fondly of the good times they had there. Do any of you remember David Harris? He often shot with Kieth Woods. David passed away about eight years ago, he was a good friend and mentor to me. He won the Seniors divison at Elberton one year, He was very proud to have his name on the stone.
I remember sharing a hotel room with Biggie one year. He had the air conditioning turned up so high that when I woke up in the morning there was an inch of snowing covering everything.

Bow table in the vendor area.
JV..if you'd put a little meat on those bones, you'd appreciate a little cool air.
We used to stay at the ponderosa camp ground near russel lake. Anyone else stay there?
photo bucket (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v338/countrygirl32082/southeasternmonument.jpg)
I use to stay at the Ponderosa.John, didn,t you sleep in the truck?
Allen, did David Harris carry a walking stick with him. The name sounds familiar. Shot with a couple of the Tennessee guys on the championship round. That was another great part of the shoot. Don't remember all the names. Thanks Biggie and Joey for the pictures and history of how it all started.
Matt
Good to see you posting good fella! You can remember that loud snoring that ran us out of the trailer that weekend. I promised myself I'd never sleep within a mile of ole Buzz again(LOL) We had a great time!!!! Maybe Doug Deese will catch this thread.
John, we did have some fun times. :archer: The next time we are together and want to sleep . You walk over to his bunk and kiss Ole-Buzz on the cheek and say "good night darling". He will stay up all night in anticipation or fear while we sleep. :biglaugh:
Wow a buddy sent me a link to this what a blast from the past!
I thought I was your only buddy?

Joey's hair style bore close resemblence to Wayne Newton's back then.
Absolutely the best shoots.... me and John played a lot of softball and golf together. Also a bunch of shoots with him, DD and other friends. Must say John Hood was a natural at anything he took up. Golf was the only thing I could beat him at..... Sure wish they were still going. I always liked the floating gator... don't miss or your arrow became a bobber !!
Lanier
This was always my favorite shoot every year. John did a great job with it. I wish more shoots would a format like the Hood shoot did.
I loved that shoot was happy to make into the top group of recurve shooters that was some fun
