Every single person here.
Barry Wensel
fido dog that was a good one
Howard Hill
Same with me every one on thid great web site and many more.....................
Cody
hands down mr. Ron Leclair
I would be a "fool" to just limit myself to just one! :campfire: :archer:
First, and has always been, Fred Bear, and next,..I'm with Fidao and Cody, everyone on here!!! :notworthy:
In my young journey.....Id have to agree that Fred Eichler is the one I most identify with.
I love his enthusiasm and love for the way of life......and his skills/accomplishments speak for themselves.
Class act all the way.
uncle bernie :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
For me a combination, Howard Hill-for his smoothness and accuracy, Ron Laclair- for his dash and accuracy, the Wensel brothers for there whitetail knowledge, Ben Pearson-unselfish promotion and innovation of archery. Hugh Rich for his arrow mastery. And any other brother/sister who challenges themselves with traditional tackle.
Marty Thomas (Buff)
I would have to say Monty Browning, not idol but respect along with Jay Massie

Wow Nothing special about me but thanks any way.
I have always been impressed with Barry Wensel
He has always seemed to me to just enjoy hunting and never made out like he was doing any thing that anyone else couldn't do if they tried.
Do not have any "idols" but have many friends whom I admire and respect greatly here.
Danny
Fred Bear, Glen St.charles, Earl Hoyt
Paul Schafer
STICKHUNTER & BARRY BUCKLEY
All the people that were involved with the Joan Leonard Memorial Bunny Hunt
byron ferguson gets my vote... his zen aproach to shooting and his mastery of the long bow sets him apart
It would have to be my Dad, rest his soul. He put that first stickbow in my hand when I was a little squirt. If I remember correctly it was a 60's Bear K Mag with gray glass. I could barely pull the string a few inches but that's all it took to hook me on archery forever. I'll never forget that moment with my idol..........IJ
Roger Rothhar for whitetails,Cris Cox for elk,Wensels for humor, and Paul Schafer cause he was the man.
Idol is pretty strong, but Howard Hill is my archery hero, followed very closely by Fred Bear.
I don't like to idolize people. They' have a nasty habit of not living up to it in the end. As Danny Rowan mentioned earlier, there are some that I respect more than others.
Idol is the wrong description for me.. Respect and people that I would listen to when they spoke,,, Plus they started me in this lifestyle in some way.
My Dad, then Earl Hoyt Jr., Ken Beck, Too Short(Paul Brunner)...
The words Idol and Hero are words that dont settle with me well all that well. I admire and respect a lot of people in Traditional archery/bowhunting.
Fellas like Don T & the people over at TBM, Doug C and Terry who runs the St Judes every year and a lot of other people on this site who have help me over the years even to the point of sending me things when I'm away from home of posting photos and info to learn from.
ak.
I don't have any.I have a few freinds on these sites I trust and agree with at times. No one is an idol to me.
i highly respect and look up to several people, one would be Byron Ferguson, one of my goals is to be able to someday master the bow like he has.
No idols for me, but there are a few that I have ALOT of respect for. LaClair, Browning, Torges are a few.
Eric
People who work hard everyday to provide for their family, who see that their obligations to God and family are met. They then devote the time it takes to become skilled and proficient woodsmen and women, just common folks who have their priorities in order.
Mine happens to be my ex brother in law's father, Ed Weiss. Killed his first deer with a bow in 1952. Has some great stories to tell and never sold out to the compound.
I hunted at his camp in Sullivan Co, PA several times, cooked on a woodburning range in the old ramshackle farm house and generally had a great time while it lasted. He's too old to shoot anymore but can still tell stories.
He also whipped my butt at golf when he was 76 by shooting a neat 78. An amazing man.
Uncle Barry , and Gene!!!!!!!My favorite shooter ..Mr. Ron LaClair  :campfire: :coffee:
Idols are for teens.
I respect a lot of people - the ones I respect the most are probably embarrassed by it.
Steve
SuperHero, Idol, and those terms are not much thought of by me. But, someone that I believe has been a constant promoter of trad archery in a very positive and consistent way is G.Fred Asbell.
The best, purest and toughest trad bowhunter I have known never goes on a forum or writes for any magazine. He is just out there doing it, always the good old-fashioned hard way, all the time and with great success owing primarily to tenacity and toughness. I have always felt that for every well-known "hunting hero" there are hundreds more we never hear about because they are self-contained and don't need us. Famous or unknown, I most respect hunters who embody honesty, dignity, knowledge of and empathy for their prey, toughness, igenuity, open minds and intelligence enough not to be suckered into all the "Chicken Little" political BS that hovers like a storm cloud over hunting today. I think of these folks as the silent minority and hope someday they will become the majority. :notworthy:
No Idols for me but Glen St Charles has to be the one I relate to the most as he lives here in the North West like I do. Great guy and love his stories.
I would have to say all of you here at TRAD GANG!! this group here is the BEST! :clapper: :clapper:

Thats awesome right there John! :archer:
Paul Schafer,
His skills with a bow, his woodsmanship, his physical strength, his humility. Top shelf individual for sure.
The one's who share their knowledge and experience, put a bow in a kids hand, leave the wild a little better than they found it, take time to help someone at the beginning, the mentors. These folks while not "idols" are the ones I hold in highest regard.
I have to agree with "vermonter13", could not have said it better.
Nicely put Dave, I would have to add the original Trad Gang, those responsible for this site, and all it does for traditional archery and the kids at St. Jude's.
My Trad Idol Is..... JOE SKIPP! That's Right! The guy who always needs a haircut... :D
... mike ...
Hey guys, one of the very best shooters ever is right here on this board and always willing to help fellas with their shooting problems-----. From what I understand he's one heck of a bowhunter as well as a top shelf tournement shooter.
Best of the best, Rod Jenkins.
HOWARD HILL is one the best trad shooters of all time... PERIOD!!!
Joe "Whip" Skipp? ... ain't he the big jolly fellow who's working out for a shopping mall Santa Claus job next Christmas? Hey Joe, you never told us how your pig hunt went, or if you did I missed it. Dave
Paul Schafer and Bart Schleyer where proper bowhunters
lots of good guys from this site also
Howard Hill and Norm Blaker. I really enjoyed the Hill movies and books, Norm is a great guy to hunt and talk with.
1st and for most, my dad! Where would I be without him, thanks pops and I hope we have many more hunts together!! A few others that I hold allot of respect for are the Wensel Brothers, Asbell, Fred Bear, Saxton Pope and Art Young. I've met Asbell at a few P&Y conventions while he talked with my dad when I was a pup yet. My dad also had the privilege of BSing with Barry Wensel talking about a hunt somewhere In Canada or Alaska, It was many years ago that they talked and this also was at a P&Y convention. I sure wish I was older at the time so I could of Interacted with those two.

lol mr wesbrock.... that pic made my daylol
Jason, is that a Shrew? Kinda reminds me of Ron :biglaugh:
All of them from the first one to make & draw a bow. But I remember more of Fred Bear growing up. When I got in to Archery Ishi, Mr. Hill, Ben Pearson & Our Own Ron LaClair. But Fred Eichler is someone that stick out now to me. I like his shows, His seem more real then the other ones that just care about P&Y scores. There is others too. But I have always had a love for Traditional Archery. From The American Indians to Robin Hood, and from deliverance to Lord of the rings.
My old Grandad used ta say,to Idolize any man, would only lead to dissapointment, because they are infact only human. Now to respect a man,is another thing.
talk about learning from ur mistakes i never took the word idol into this deep of thought but now that i have it is a really strong word.but fred eichler is still the man
Well said Danny  ! T
Who in the world would want to be someones IDOL?

RESPECTED .....Completely different word and meaning.

I RESPECT guys who work hard to get somewhere in life. I IDOLIZE my dad and mom.
I'd hope my kids would idolize me.
I agree with what everyone else says and i'de like to add Chester Stevenson and how about Will Compton.
We know what ya mean bud!!!!! :) ..respect , for sure!....sounds like that show on TV I cant stand..American Idol...
I would vote for Monty Browning. I was lucky enough to listen to him speak in Denver a few weeks ago at our Colorado Traditional Bowhunters meeting. What an inspiration and a positive soul. His story regarding the Cape Buffalo was incredible. Thanks
Gene and Barry Wensel and Dave Knipes
I'm not in to idol worshipping but have been impressed by lots of our past archers including Robin Hood, Geronimo, Ishi, Howard Hill, Fred Bear, and Ben Pearson.
There are probably hundreds or even thousands of archers in the past that shot better than the ones we know today. We can only imagine how we might do in a battle with thousands of other archers.
I would say that there are a number of guys that have changed my life through their work and writing. I find that most of the inspiration for hunting has happened from books. G. Fred Asbell's Ground Stalking book inspired me to start looking at the hunt in a different way.
Dr. Don Thomas' books changed my life. They did so to the point that I believed that I could hunt all over the world and achieve any goal if I wanted to. I also ended up with a lab and started waterfowling and fly-fishing....reading 8-10 books by the guy has become a damn expensive undertaking. :biglaugh: I tell you what though it has given me a lot of joy and fulfillment, and I will be eternally grateful.
Next up I would say would be Dave Peterson. I just finished his "Man Made of Elk" and the ethics and issues that are in it spoke to me in a very poignant way. I know the things that he brings up have changed how I view land use and inspired me to learn/do more on a local level about things that aren't right. I will be looking into more of Mr. Peterson's work.
I am just finishing Mike Mitten's book "One With the Wilderness" and I have a feeling that he has just changed my life in terms of hunting. There will be a lot more solo backpack trips in my future. I have wanted to hunt this way for some time and strangely Mr. Mitten seems to have given me the permission to pursue that dream no matter what other people say about it.
Those are a small list of some of the idols/heros/inspirations whatever you want to call them. To me these guys are not the be all and end all, there are a lot of great hunters and inspirational people out there, these are just the ones that have affected me the most.
If you haven't seen the work from the above gentlemen I would strongly suggest that you do, of course like I said you have to be careful it might change your life.
Allan

Scott Bolson
Fred Bear has done alot for archery.Hunting video`s,the amount of bows and equiptment produced at the time, advertising. The list goes on and on.
MY DAD! THEN PAUL SCHAFER.
My personal trad hero/idol is Fred Bear but also anyone who mentors a new archer, young or old.
