Hello everyone. Just getting back into archery and was wondering what brand of feathers do you use?
I have seen Gateway and they seem to have a rather thick base and sometimes uneven thickness from feather to feather.
Has anyone tried AMG or is it worth the extra money to go with Trueflight.
Your choices and reasons/opinions for going with your brand are greatly appreciated
Thanks and best regards
Paul
Trueflight, IMHO they are the best.
trueflight, but have heard good things about amg
Whatever I decide to buy that day....
AMG is all I shoot now.A very consistant grind and good colors.
Eastern wild turkey primaries. I can't afford commercially made fletching anymore.
Trueflight, I've used AMG but they just don't have the selection yet. dino
Trueflight, but I'm looking at the AMGs. I usually buy full lenght and chop my own.
Mike
I get mine from the wings of Jakes and Toms in the spring. I have everyone I know save me their wings. Best of all they are free !
turkey and goose!
I use Gateway they work great.
i have used them all and from my experience i like AMG the best they are ground consistently and the price is right
I buy or trade for full length non brand and chop
my own.
Thanks everyone.
I have been saving all the primaries from wild turkeys buddies have graciously donated. I have tried my hand at dying some of them and they turned out great with Kool Aid as dye...but I can't find a bright enough yellow to suit my taste. I ended up with a very bright and intense red by using 3 pkgs of Tropical punch Kool aid one of Strawberry in a quart jar.
Used a rotary fabric cutter and a template my friend made to cut 5" shields and it works well.
Now I just need to find a bright yellow dye.....is there a feather specific dye available. Unfortunately I live in a very small town with little in the way of retail outlets.
Norseman I use RIT dye. Most grocery, pharmacy type store around here sell it, butI ordered my last few boxes right online. Shipping was pretty cheap.
Rit dye is one I have tried, but the only decent color they have here in town is Scarlet. I will have to try a few other colors and blend them to see what I can get ...thanks
Paul, pm sent
Thanks....response and e-mail addy sent to you
Cheers
Raven Arrows!!! I use there Natural White and Goose Feathers. My second choice would be Truflight.

Trueflight 5" left wing, shield cut feathers. :archer:
Gateway 2" Rayzr
Norseman,
Do a google on Veniard's dyes. This is a line of dyes that are used in the fly tying industry, specifically formulated for dying feathers. I have used it with great success, as you can get a huge range of very natural colours. Comes as a powder, and you mix it with water and vinegar. Haven't tried the yellow however, but have created some very nice fletching.
Foxtail
Thanks!!!!! I could not remember that name...you would think being a fly tyer I would.....LOL
Here is a pic of a Kool Aid dyed Barred Turkey Primary.

The small liquid bottles of food coloring mixed into a half bottle of rubbing alcohol makes a great dye for feathers.
Choctaw
I'll second the food coloring thing.Works good, cheap but you're limited to red, blue, green and yellow unless you try mixing them up.
Good tips...I will try the food coloring.
