Title: My home made adaptor for wood arrows.
Post by: George D. Stout on March 03, 2009, 11:50:00 AM
Here is my home made wood arrow, converta-point adaptor. This will fit 11/32 or a lightly sanded 23/64 wood shaft. You need a 30:30 case; 2219 insert; some 23/64 aluminum arrow tubing and some hot glue.
You can follow the photos to see how it works. I cut the 30:30 case with a tubing cutter but you can use a hack saw or other method. The 2219 fits nearly perfectly in the fired casing end. The collar is made from 2314 arrow shaft to space between insert and wood arrow shaft so shaft doesn't pop out on hard impact. Just push it in ahead of wood shaft when ready to glue.

The case that I cut adds 93 grains; with collar, insert and 125 grain field point it comes to 201 grains up front. It would be great to utilize some short or stiff shaft. If you cut the case right next to the rim, you will have more weight and length.

Is there really anything that a 30/30 can't do?

Nice Design!!! The final product looks like someone tried to cross a arrow with a 30-30 bullet!   :clapper:

How much does that case weigh George?

I have some cedars that are a little short. I gotta try this on. Thanks George, pretty slick idea.

Frassettor....the weight is listed in the post.  I'm sure someone has done this before; I figured it out by perusing a pile of cedars that were too stiff for my current bow.  By the way, a raw shaft will fit loosely (11/32), but a few dips of lacquer will fill it out nicely.

have any idea what insert might fit a .270 case?

Ian,

Unless you are going to shoot 1/2 diameter shafts I think the .270 will be too big.

now a 223 might be interesting.

My 30:30 was just handy.  There's no reason other cases won't work well by adjusting for the threaded insert to the fired casing.  The 270 may work very well with a smaller insert...I don't have any to try. The sloped shoulder models could be more problematic with shaft fit.
The only way to know is to try.
