Title: Acquired a bow!!
Post by: crumrw on March 02, 2009, 10:21:00 AM
I finally got a recurve AND got rid of my compound. I got a PSE Kingfisher in a trade.  It's a little beat up and has a little rust on the bolts, but it shoots and I am slowly getting acclimated to it.  My compound I gave to a good friend of mine who wants to do some hog hunting this year.  He was able to find me a temporary job after I got laid in December.  Great guy and hopefully after this year I can ween him off the compound and get him into trad as well.

Question, the arrows I'm shooting are I think (based on what I've read) spined a little high for the bow.  Is there a way I can reduce the spine to accommodate a bow 5-10 lbs. less?

Question 2, I'm thinking about building my own matching bows for my fiance and I.  I'm a little nervous because it would kill me if I made something that blew up on her ( less concerned about my own safety).  Is there a solid tutorial that trumps the rest in this area?...or, is there anyone in the Austin area that might be able to show me a few pointers?

Thanks guys.  I am a learning flintknapper and would be happy to trade for some help.

LOL crumrw, I knew what you meant, but it was funny to read.  Lots of good tutorials in the how to section.  George and Mickey both have great build alongs on their sites.  Plus this bunch around here can help out alot in every steps of the process.
Yu going to build matching selfbows?

Lonewolf,

Not sure yet.  I might try board bows first, but this is my last semester at UT and I have access to an awesome wood shop so I was thinking about maybe trying a trilam or some kind of backed bow.  Maybe hickory backed ipe or something.

To answer one of your questions, you can put heavier points on your arrows to weaken the spine.

Sorry/happy for you with regards to your December situation.

Crum,  I am here in Austin and am personal friends with a guy named Arvin Weave.  He builds one of the best selfbow I have shot and I think he does tutorials.  Give me a call and I can lead you to him.   Bob   512 940 3098

crum,

If you want to try your hand at a laminated glass bow, Mr Sarrels can probably give you a tip or two.  He builds some mighty fine bows.  I think a glass laminated bow would probably be the safest bow for your fiancee to shoot.

crum,
in the Build-along section there is an OUTSTANDING build along:

It's very well done. So much so even I am tempted to give it a try!

DngrsDan,

That build along is great.  I have access to a planer, jointer, thickness sander, table saw and band saw so I should be able to make so lams.  Maybe I'll give it a try.  Hey Bob, do you know where I can pick up some wood in small quantities?...such as ipe, hickory, osage, etc.

Thanks guys for the advice,
Rick
