Title: Anybody finding Shed's way down south?
Post by: South MS Bowhunter on March 01, 2009, 12:41:00 AM
I went out Friday and today and have not found any shed's yet but, plenty of fresh scrapes and rub lines.  Our rut peaks around the 30th of January but I saw little action during that time and the season closed on the 15th of February. Has anyone found any shed's yet this far south (Mississippi gulf coast)? What time of the year is best for the deep south?

Up here is the far northern reaches of Mississippi, some of the bucks wear their antlers until turkey season opens, or thereabouts (two more weeks). I've found active scrapes while turkey hunting, too, although that's not the norm. I think most sheds drop about now, so they should be off down there on the coast.

The biggest problem with shed hunting around here is the thick cover. Very hard to find them in the brush and thickets.

Just found my first shed two days ago. Most bucks are still sporting antlers right now. Seems kinda late but they are just starting to drop here south of San Antonio, Texas.CK

I have found a couple so far but I am thinking next weekend ought to be a good time. I am checking my food plots regularly and hope to get some before the squirrels get them all.

Still have horns here. Taking a video/picture survey of the deer left in the current area. Here are two.

Of course it's been a week. They could be off now. I need to pull some more pics.

Never had much luck finding sheds, but then again have not been the most diligent in looking for them at this time of year either.

However, My father inlaw's half basset hound / half mutt brought in a 5 point shed that I rough scored around 125 a few days ago !!! 3" bases, G2 was 10.5" long, 2" sticker coming off base, 1" sticker off the G2. Pretty much a 8-10 pointer probably depending on what the other side was ? I would post a pic but a friend borrowed it to compare to trail cam pics. We found his pic from last year and it looks like he grew almost 30" in a year. If he makes it he should be a solid 140" this year, he appears to have been a 3.5 to 4.5 yr old this year.

I have found a couple . One small and one 5 pt on the side that should score in the 120 range. I saw one last week that was still sporting his rack but it was huge. Maybe next year if he slips up as he was in a no hunting area.

Thanks guys last year was the first year to really look for sheds and i found a small fork horn and a broken tine. Really would like to learn when the best time is here and locations to start looking, and because it is really thick makes it even more difficult.  Last year i started looking around mid march and i was on my hand and knee's alot and was fearful of a close encounter of the snake kind so didn't spend much time after the temps picked up.

Very common to see bucks with antlers during turkey season around here. Usually don't find any fresh sheds before April at the earliest.
