I footed some poc with both maple and walnut by using 3/8" square stock and being real careful to get em straight.  Used a small plane and then sandpaper to take them down to match the shaft.

The maple blended with the poc and was barely noticeable but the walnut stood out real nice.  Would like to see some pics of your efforts!

I believe Allegehny Arrow Woods has footing length round stock in various hardwoods.
