what does everyone prefer? what is the toughest and lasts a long time?
i have always shot the calf hair plates and werat them out pretty quick. i am now looking at the rug plate and rest
-
I like industrial strength Velcro with the sticky back. Just cut to shape, peel and stick! Use the fuzzy part.
-
I second the Velcro. Very tough and also quiets your draw.
-
calf hair plate & seal skin shelf
-
I've been using Seal skin for the last couple of years now. This stuff is quiet and tuff. Holds up very well and I do a ton of shooting all year round.
-
On my longbows and selfbows I prefer leather. I use a little Barge cement to hold them on.
-
I use the same as BobW.
-
My favorites are beaver tail or ostrich leg leather. Both are extremely tough and slick.
-
velcro for me too
-
Seal skin works well for me.

Industrial Velcro, last for years! Shawn
-
Gotta go with Industrial Velcro. Easy, easy.
-
calves skin or seal skin. Velcro the soft side is just to noisy. I can hear my arrow being drawn back. And so can the deer. But then I hunt from the ground and they get very close.<><
-
Velrco, pick it up at a hardware store or Wal-mart. Cheap and durable. Ed
-
Cordavan leather.Smooth and never needs to be replaced.Just gets slicker with time.
-
Seal skin here.
-
I'm a velcro user also. The deer I shot from the ground didn't seem to br able to hear it, even the one I shot at 8 feet.
-
If you can hear an arrow drawing on velcro you need to address your arrows. They are rough or something.Wax them with a little car wax and get them smooth and you will not hear anything. Some arrow finishes drag on anything but a good wax will make them a lot better and make it easy to clean the blood off when the time comes. jmo

Velcro rest and leather side plate.
-
I have used a piece of beaver pelt shaved down to the felt for the shelf. Has been lasting a long time, and quiet. Just leather for the side plate.
-
Seal Skin, IMO the best!
-
kangaroo leather side plate. velcro shelf
-
seal skin rest and calf hair plate for me
-
I also like the calf hair plate and seal skin shelf the best...
-
I'm with the Velcro crowd. Seems to last for years, is very quiet and is inexpensive.
I cover the shelf and side plate with the same piece of garment grade leather. After that I mark the area where I want to put the Velcro and give it a coat of contact cement. When dry I stick on the self adhesive fuzzy Velcro and it's good to go.

I've been using the same piece of velcro since 2003. I'm not sure how long it lasts yet.
-
I prefer Sealskin. I just got a 2 1/2 foot by 6-8 inch piece of the most beautiful Leopard Seal skin. Orange/Tan with Black spots. That's enough for several lifetimes of shooting many bows.
-
where is everybody getting these big pieces of skin at? i want a tiny piece
-
Seal skin on all my bows!
-
ONLY SEAL SKIN HERE, i`ve used everything seal skin is silent period
-
My fav rest and wall material is what I get from TRAP he is an associate sponsor here.
-
Beaver tail!
-
Velcro on all the bows we build.Last longer than anything I know.
-
Another fan of seal skin. Durable and very quiet.
-
I've always just shot off the wood.
-
For you guys who seem to have supplies of seal skin, please tell the remainder of us where to get some!! I like it for the rest and calf skin for the side plate.

I looked high and low but 3bay was the only place I found some.
All of the suppliers I talked to got theirs from Alaska Bowhunting Supply, which no longer supplies them.
It's hard to imagine this dry spell will be permanent.
