A lot of people take pride in the speed of their arrows, but I am curious to see what is the slowest arrow you guys shoot...and are successful with?
160ish. Took 5 deer, 4 pigs, and a javelina with this set up in the last 7 or 8 months.

50lb bamboo backed hickory bow. Shoots a 500gr cedar arrow at a neckbreaking 125 fps.
Its accurate out to 13 yards. After that, it tends to drop a bit.
The bow looks about the same strung as it does unstrung!
I've killer more than my share of bucks with bows in the 160's.
150 fps, 600 grain arrow, sharp STOS.Shoots clean through both shoulders and heart on Whitetail buck at 20 yds. Bob
my arras are so slow,,,,when I see I'm gonna miss my target, I just run down and put it in front of the arrow before it gets there. ;)
650 gns at 150-160 is plenty for me and my playmates. I like to see 'em in flight!
Arrows aren't slow, bows shoot arrows slow. Slow bow will shoot all weights of arrows slow. Fast bows will shoot all weights faster.
Knew what you were saying, just had to add my 2 cents worth.
As I'm sure everyone knows ,Speed doesn't kill, correct shot placement does.
Back in the late 60's and 70's, I don't think my bows shot any faster than 165-170 fps with Cedar and Forgewood arrows and my freezer was always full of venison. The last statement from Ia Hawkeye says it all...
I draw the line around 160.If it is slower than that it gets a lighter arrow,is used for carp or stays home.I have hunted with slower but won't do it any more.
Right around 160 fps for me.
My bows average around 150 fps with arrows in the 650 gr range. I've shot that weight and speed for so long that I'm not sure what I would do with something that shot 170-180 (probably shoot over everything). I shoot ground squirrels out to about 35 yards without any problem. The key is to just get familiar with the arc of the arrow.
Dont know what my bow chronos at. All I know is that it is a lot quieter than many other's bows. That is my main concern...you know...if I can hit the target. LOL.
I don't know how (fast) my bows shoot. Don't really care to know. Speed is something mentioned to sell wheel bows. That's what I think.... Trad Archery is a whole new ball game.
We learn our arrows trajectory and the grey matter takes over. Well... for me anyway.

Josef,
My standard hunting bow will shoot a 600 grain arrow around 170-180 fps. My choice is not to shoot anything much slower.
I have bows that will shoot a light weight hunting arrow (480-525) in the 195 fps range. These are all recurve bows.
Arrow speed is a function of bow weight and efficiency of bow design (how efficiently the bow transfers energy to the arrow). Most traditional bows transfer energy more efficiently to a heavier arrow than to a lighter arrow (this is why most bows are quieter with heavier arrows).
My opinion is that a bow that shoots a hunting weight arrow fast, is always better than one that shoots slower..FOR ME. I think a faster arrow shot at game allows for less reaction time and truer shots.
Some folks are focused on speed, some are anti-speed. It is the shot placement that counts. It is just better for me to use as fast a set-up as I can shoot accuratly to make sure my target is in the same place when the arrow hits as it was when I released.
But... like a lot of things "to each his own". Whatever works, works.
OkKeith
My hunting bow shoots 640 grain arrows at 150 fps.
Shot placement is what counts - I get it most accuratly consistant at 180 to 195 fps.

Speed plays a pretty major role.

Speed plays a pretty major role, though not on its own. [/b]
About the slowest set-up I have hunted with was 145fps-the fastest was 192. Most of my bows are matched with arrows that yield 150-160. I've gotten comfortable with that speed.

It's funny that prior to the cronograph being in everyone's tackle box, people just new when a bow was slow, medium, or fast. Now we need numbers to tell us; new age I suppose.
There are ways of maximizing performance as well, and those include, but are certainly not limited to, good consistent form, and a pull through release on each shot. Consistency creates accuracy, and accuracy kills.
Don't get too enamored with numbers, just make sure you are doing all you can to maximize the performance through consistency in your form.
