Title: 3 - blade question (not a 2 blade vs. 3 blade debate)
Post by: adirondack46r on February 26, 2009, 03:54:00 PM
How many are successful shooting 3 blades (snuffer, WW, etc.) from sub-50# setups for whitetails? If so, what are your arrow specs - total weight, broadhead, FOC?

53# @ 30"
31 3/4" Carbon Express Maxima 350
100 Grain brass insert
175 Grain Razorcap
590 grains total

Black widow PSA V
ASC/CX

Love my razorcaps, easy to get sharp, adjustable in weight and make big holes

Tiur im going to try those 300 Xtreem one of these days, they look like they will go through anything.

I shot a whitetail doe at 15 yards with a 45# yew selfbow (drawn to 28.5-29") with a 625 grain lam birch shaft with a Wensel Woodsman.  It nearly passed through (didn't hit any bones).

I killed a 120# sow hog about a week ago.  She was as tough as any deer you will encounter.  The broadhead was hanging out the other side on a slightly quartering forward shot.  Centered one rib on entry.  Mild R/D longbow drawing 49@27.  I was using a Wensel Woodsman on a extremely high FOC 650 grain carbon shaft.

My paternal grandfather's favorite whitetail setup was a recurve pulling 42# @ 26" with a 1" 3-blade head on an arrow weighing around 450 grains (maybe less, I'd have to weigh them again). I'd hate to think how many deer he blew through with that equipment -- quite a few.

Thanks guys.

Jason, I have a feeling this wouldn't even be a discussion for a lot of our fathers and grandfathers.

Anybody else with sub-50# set ups and 3-blades?

I downed this guy with a Shrew Sabertooth drawing 47#@ 27 1/4. I used a 55/50 cedar tipped with a 160 grain Snuffer.

I got this one with a 48@ 27 1/4 RER standard longbow, 55/60 cedars and 160 grain Suffers. BTW way I was happy, just didn't beat the timer, LOL! You can see the entrance hole towards the last rib, the arrow was angled into the chest.

So you're saying I DON'T need a heavy bow to blow through a deer with a 3 blade head??    ;)   I smell snuffers...

I have shot about 8 deer and one good hog with 3 blade heads from bows in the 45@27 range.Arrows in the 450-500 range.Carbon, wood and one aluminum. All but one was with a woodsman. One deer was with the 160 snuffer. The only arrow that did not blow through was the one shot in the hog.It was quartering to me and I shot through the shoulder with a short draw.Still got lung and liver so he only went 40 yards. All woodsman kills were with the same broadhead. The last shot on a doe with a wood arrow took a bounce after hitting a log on the backside and launche out in a cutover where I never found the arrow. They work just great but I just moved to the simmons because they were bigger.
