Title: Anyone got a good tip on sharpening?
Post by: CO_Redneck on February 24, 2009, 11:53:00 AM
I have some Zwickeys, the 2 blade with bleeders, so 4 blades technically. Anywho, anyone got a good tutorial/tip on how to get them scary sharp? I've got a really nice sharpening stone, etc. would that do it? If so, what angle should I sharpen at?

Thanks all!

Tru-angle files and hones work very well on 4-blade Zwickeys.

Look at KME, one of our sponsors. Absolutely the best sharpening system out there.

Yep, Bob beat me to it.  KME - about as easy as it gets..... And the man behind it (Ron - a.k.a. Sharpster) is one of the best.

The KME comes with 2 sets of jaws. one for the main blade and one for bleeders.  Ron will sit on the phone with you and talk you through it.  Better service can not be found.

I use a large bench stone for all of my sharpening. Broadheads,Knives,Axes, etc.

It has a Med. grit side and a Fine grit side, and is about 2" wide and 8" long. I don't use any oil, just water.I dip the stone in water for a few minutes and let it soak up a bunch. After I'm done sharpening,I run the stone under the sink faucet and scrub it with a potato brush to clean it off. I have been using this stone for over 30 years.

You want a sharpening tip????? Let the stone do it's job!!!!! Everyone I have seen that has problems sharpening, seems to mash the knife/broadhead/whatever down on the stone to make it bite more.

Take your time,Let the stone do it's job. The answer is more strokes, not more pressure.

woodchucker hit the nail on the head.  Number one tip....DON'T PUSH!

And keep a felt tip marker handy while sharpening.  Darken the edge where you are working from time to time.  The next pass over the stone will remove the ink where there is contact and show you if you are holding the correct angle.  Think Too Short came up with this originally.

I use the True angle Hones and they work very well. I was sharpening challenged until I learned do ***NOT*** put any ***PRESSURE*** on the BH. If you let the weight of the BH do the work for you when your done you will be able to shave with them!

Thanks for the support guys but Greg is correct on this one. The KME will not work on Zwicky 4 blades because the bleeders are not removable.

You're gonna need to freehand sharpen them with a file or a narrow diamond hone Grant.
