Title: Feather lenght on carbon
Post by: xtrema312 on February 23, 2009, 06:30:00 PM
What is the best all around feather length for carbon shafts?  I will be using 3 standard parabolic helical and will be using the arrows for all around general shooting and hunting with broad heads.  I have a few fletched up with 5" right now for bare shaft group shooting, but I am wondering if I can't go shorter and still get real good broad head flight.

My favorite is four 4" feathers. I've shot 3-5", 3-5 1/2's. I like the 4 -4"ers best.By the way when you bare shaft shoot; the shaft is bare no feathers.

The farther forward your FOC is, the smaller fletching you can use, 4" is fine and even that's overkill with FOC higher then 25%....O.L.

I am shooting 5" fletched and bare shaft groups right now.

Right now I am at about 18% FOC, but plan to trim a little more and add another 25 gr. up front. If I can cut back the feather length that should also shift FOC.  I assume FOC will go up, but not sure how much.

I'm not sure what is best, but I can tell you that I use 3 4" feathers on my carbon shafts.  My bow is tuned well and I can shoot the largest snuffer with no problems out of this set up.  Good tuning, good form, and foc are also contributing factors.
