For a 4 days hunt in California, how many pig tags would you buy. Don't want to go crazy but want to hunt throughout the days.
I you need more than 2 I want to know the spot!

I second that.
But to your question i would carry no less than 2, On privet or public land the chance of getting more than 2 in a weekend, though doable are not the best, but if you conect on the first or second day you will have one left so you dont have to hit the nearest Wally World to get more.
Okay, I went with 2. If I leave with one left that seem like a good enough reason to drive back down.
pig tags? Learn something new every day. What is the total cost of hunting a pig in Ca?
Around $13, I think. It goes up every year...
Two is good enough, but like Bjorn said, if you need more than that PLEASE let us know where you're going! One is never too far from a merchant with pig tags, so if you do happen on a sounder with a death-wish, well...
Is it public or private your hunting?
And yeah Gregg, though the pigs are invasive, destructive and flat out destroying the lands they inhabit, the Ca. Dept. of Fish and Game seems them as public property and a source of income. $10 used to buy you a pack of tags, now it won't buy you one even though the pig population has exploded! Oh, and ALL game laws apply - no feeders, no traps, daylight only.
Remember the spinach recall a few years back? E-Coli, traced to pigs, in the salad bowl of the USA, and yet one can't go whack the hog population. C-R-A-Z-Y. Seems to me some of the DFG officials need to spend some time in Texas to see what an unchecked hog population can do!
Pig hunting cost for Resident: $37.00 license and $17.75 Tag.
Non resident: $128.50 license and $59.25 Tag
I am fortunate enough to be able to pay as a resident because I am still active duty military.
this thread made me realize why i love Texas soo much.
HUMMM i didnt know a out of state tag was 60$, You might want to check around the place you are hunting, it might be worth a trip to Wally World for the second tag.
Oh yeah, did I mention CA has some STUPID hunting regs?
:banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
Juan...Juan...Juan...Did I say Poor Jade??? This is the guy I've been telling you about for two weeks or more now! That hike went to your head not just your legs.
Bear Heart is lucky since he's active duty military, as he lined out in his last post.
He and I will be hunting Lake Sonoma for four days next week.
I figure he'll want at least two tags. I'll have one and if my wife joins us she'll have her's too.
I know there are pigs there and have a good idea where to go sit and wait or spot and stalk as well. I've been gathering intelligence and reconning the field lately! I figure weekdays, and shotgun season being over, will bode us well. A lot of persistence and some luck too I hope!
Can't wait to met you Bear Heart. Hope to get you into some pig action.
I checked the forecast. I thought California was sunny after watching the tourism ads with Clint Eastwood and Arnold. I guess I will be in my elements, H2O.
Beaver..yep...I wouldn't mind having Texas regs here in Kalifornistan. Can't even shoot does for cryin' out loud. I see dry does all the time...nope...can't shoot them.
Pigs as a money making big game animal? Who'd have thought? CA DF&G that's who! When I started chasing them they were 5 tags for $7.50, sold in a handy book, no bag or possesion. Heck, WT or Bjorn, you guys probably remember when you didn't need tags.
Yep BH...it's raining much now. One of my other private options is blocked now too...not the ranch I was talking about...my friends are blocked on their mountain south of Lake Sonoma by the high creeks now. I'm fixing to make a beer run for them and meet them at the creek...shoot a line across and send them supplies! (That's a joke...at least for now...there's a funny story about "the last beer on the mountain" from a couple of years ago!
OK, Toby, what's the TradGang rules??? :smileystooges: Who loves ya, man?
Ah jeez!!! Which of us was running UP the hill? Who was saying...SLOW DOWN? Not this kid.
I may not be in the best shape ever but I do have a low gear ratio...Yes...that's a short joke!
I'm working on Thursday. Good luck out there with Mark. He'll run you into the ground and finish the job we started Saturday.
You guys are killing me. My father used to guide in Colorado and ran his clients ragged up and down the mountains before he learned better. We went hunting this year and I unintentionally paid him back for the sins of his younger days. Looking at my energizer bunny of a two year old I know he'll put a hurting on my one day.
Well Bear Heart, you won't have that problem with Toby!! (who's gettin' the last word?) Now whether you'll stay up front when you see the hogs is another matter! Them low gears he's talking about really kick in when the hogs appear. Just keep one notched and stay a click ahead, you'll get a shot! :D
Nah, Toby would let the guest have first crack! He waited on me to drive over to a sounder once on his uncle's ranch! Heck of a nice gesture but a medivac helicopter scared them off before I got there! I say take the shot while the shootin's good!
Now y'all bring a hog on by and I'll be happy to help you butcher it, so long as we eat a backstrap on the spot! Nothing better than having some grilling while the rest is getting cut off the bone. Beer is usually involved.
To have to buy a pig tag???
Next thing you know they be lettin a foreigner
run the place.
We're on the express train to hell in Kalifornistan! If ya aint too careful Rusty, Arnie's gonna be president!
The only time I have been down there was a straight flight into Fort Irwin. For those who don't know that is the middle of the desert or as I like to call it the armpit of the earth. Sure did want to catch some of those burrows though. Who would think that we still have wild donkeys.
You are in for a treat Bear Heart. For all intents and purposes Northern California is a whole different state than the southern half. I know I'll raise some cane for saying it, but if it weren't for the California aqueduct and all the rain we get up here, the desert parts of our state would remain uninhabited.
Great views, good food, mild weather. We pay high rent, and the game laws suck, buy I wouldn't call anywhere else home. :D
Here's a couple of pic's from Saturday's afternoon hunt...
I'm the little guy with the short recurve. Juan's the one holding himself up with his longbow :help: :wavey:

Here's Juan taking a rest,

As you can see level ground is at a premium here.
Well, what he lacks in stature he makes up for in tall-humor :saywhat:
You guys are killin' me I'm rollin' on the floor. :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
Pig tags?? We don't need no stinking tags here in Tejas. Only hunting license. LOL
When I was in Georgia you just needed a small game license. No bag limit.
In Georgia, if I am not mistaken, wild pigs are your property if they venture onto your land. You are free to kill them as you please. Am I mistaken? Any Georgians about?
I can assure you that if the day ever comes when I come out of my back door to find a hog in my yard you will soon see a hog in my freezer - tag be damned! :archer:
You are correct. In Ga. pigs belong to the landowner. I am not fortunate to be able to hunt private land pigs BUT South Ga. has some fine public land pig hunting with no limit. There are 8 public land WMA`s within an hour of the house. Three withing 15 minutes. The smallest is 3,200 acres and The largest is not a WMA but an Army base. Fort Stewart,I think its 250,000 acres. All on prime land most on riverbottoms.
We should all plan a hunt swap for pork sometime. You California Guys have the most beautiful country I`ve seen.In pics of course I ain`t been across the Mississippi .RC
Hey RC now that sounds like fun. Get some of you Ga boys out here sometime and we'll come out there another.
Like Toby said, RC. Any time, man! The pictures don't do the Golden state justice, and you wouldn't know it from the pictures above, but like all Californians BTH and I happen to be super models... now where did I put that martini? :smileystooges:
Wow, you mean you gotta have tags for pigs in California. Guess we are lucky here in Texas. You can kill as many as you want with any weapon you want, short of machine guns and hand grenades, any time nite or day. Any time of the year. Really helps us keep huntin durin the off deer and turkey seasons.
CA DF&G, in their ultimate wisdom, have decided that tags are required. You can hunt with dogs, but cannot use a knife or spear to finish the hog...you must use a handgun, rifle, shotgun, or bow. They at least gave us no bag or possession limit with year around hunting. They just want their cut to fund the "wild pig management program". So, I can't really complain too much. I can hunt pigs year around. It just costs me $19 per pig. Oh yeah, we can't hunt them at night...really lame there.
And for depradation...well you have to prove the pigs intends to or is in the process of destroying your property. Don't get me started on that subject...
But, like anywhere else, pigs are made for bow hunting and provide year around fun and pork chops.
Now...back to the hot tub and the margaritas. :goldtooth:
Sounds to me like the F&Wd think theres a problem with the dog pop. My dogs never went huntin any where with Guns or bows. I trusted them to keep the pig off me. you cant always trust an excited redneck with a .45.
Really tags for pigs I dont know bout that....... we TRY to exterminate them in down here it just dont seem to be workin.
Larry
Yep...they just don't get it here yet.
In Texas you can hunt them year round,no limit, some ranches have to shoot them out of helicopters just to thin them some!Across the line in New Mexico for feral hogs I talked to a warden and he said they don't even require a lic. even if you live out of state. He said he would even help shoot some if needed.I think the peoples republic of Kalifornia needs to re-think the situation?
D-Tee you are dead right on that matter. I've even tried talking sense and logic to F&G using facts, statistics from a report on the exploding hog populations in Texas and through the midwest. They said it was BS and that they knew better. Oh boy, are they gonna be in for a surprise. We will never eradicate the hogs. They are too smart, too prolific, and live in places we can't easily get to. It is just a money making scheme on the part of the state to make money to fund positions in F&G.
This is too disturbing. It's interupting my yoga and latte, I need to call my therapist.
Some laws are so contrary to logic and common sense that eventually they are broken, creating criminals out of good men. The hog population is EXPLODING here in California, it is just a matter of time before land-owners will start giving the DF&G the "bird".
I need to call my agent... :knothead:
