Decisions decisions! lol Does anyone shoot Silvertip reurves (particularly the Fast Flight ones)? How are they in terms of speed, smoothness, other shooting characteristics? Pics would be great! I've really had a good experience dealing with Beth so far! Still gotta decide between these and the Border limbs though...ahhh!! can still think of a lot worse things to go through though ;)
-
I've owned several along with many other big name bows. I thing the Silvertip ranks with the very best. The grip is excellent, beautiful workmanship, smooth and forgiving. Speed is good with good stability and they shoot very quietly, which is another attribute I feel is important in a hunting bow. The differences in the very best bows IMO are subtle and mostly decided on personal preferences. I've bounced between three makers for some time but I think the 60" Silvertip takedown is going to be my final choice in a glass bow.
Terry
-
Everything Terry said and more..I`ve all but giving up shooting bows but if I had to buy another it would be another Silvertip..
-
When it comes to glass bows and particularly recurves, one need look no further than the Silvertip. It's mass weight contributes much to it's quick arrow delivery and lack of handshock. I've owned several over the years.
I agree with what Terry states above. Much of it comes down to personal preference. I've switched completely to longbows and now make my own, but the Schafer Silvertip is the hunter's bow and it lives up to its name in every respect!!!!
-
never shot the border but i've had good experiences w/ sid whenever i contacted him.
i have two silvertips and they are world class hunting bows.....period. silvertips have been around for a LONG time and have stood the test of time in terms of quality, performance and customer service!
-
I would add to everything said about the silvertips but don't have the time right now cause we are having unusally warm weather here in the upper NY and I'm going out to shoot my silvertip before the weather changes.Silvertip "I just like it"
-
A4C,
For about 4 years, I kept trading bows to find my "ultimate" recurve. I shot just about everything...the two I just could not get my hands on were a Silvertip and a Dale Dye. Sooooooooo, I took a trip to Montana to shoot them both. There is NO comparison. I think the Silvertip is as good as it gets for a recurve and Dave and Beth are two of the nicest people I have had the pleasure to meet.
-
I have my second on the way, both with the FF option. At least the FF-option bows take a stiffer spine (about 10#) than you would predict based on the standard equation for spine estimation, in my experience. I might get a Morrison or Dale Dye recurve some day, but STs are top of the line as far as workmanship, eye appeal, speed and efficiency. Also, though not offered with the FF option, the oak leaf carvings on the handles of the exotic wood risers that Dave displayed at the 2006 PBS Gathering are unbelievable!!!
-
Here's a link to a couple of my Silvertips. Great bows as others have stated.

Hi Craig;
I have been shooting Silvertips since 1982, and although there are several other good recurves out there, the Silvertips have it all! Beauty, functionalbilty, , inherent stability, best grip " period". If any one has any doubt, just shoot one for point on distance!!! It will blow you away, Paul was an awesome long distance shot , who had a born with natural ability , practiced a lot , but I think that some credit should go to his Bow design!
In short, this testimonial is not to discredit any other bow on the market as i own and shoot a couple of others occasionally, but my Silvertips ( and I own Many ) are my go to Bows .
If any one present can post a pic ,I could email Daves latest creation to them ( absolutely gorgeous) to them to post.
-
[email protected] Sergio. I'll post the pics.
-
I really like my Silvertip. Dave and Beth are great to work with. I will have another one day.
-
I got my first "tip" this past summer and it definitely won't be my last. I've owned many of the big named bows over the past 15 years but I can honestly say that nothing I've owned shot as consistently well for me as my "tip". Mine is a relativley plain Jane model, Charcoal Dymondwood riser w/yew stripe, and yew limbs w/diamondback skins, non FF but man does it shoot. While I don't hunt at long distances on a practice range I have no problem keeping my arrows on a 8" paper plate at 25 yards provided I do my part. Something I've never beem able to do before. I've since sold all my other bows and as soon as I'm able I will be ordering a FF "tip" from Beth & Dave who by the way have been extremely helpful even though I didn't buy my "tip" from them. Great bows and great people!!!!!
-
This may be a stupid question, but does Silvertip have a website?
-

Here's Sergio's beautiful bow :D Thanks for the pics! I believe the 'tip is what I'll be getting as soon as my lefty ACS gets sold.

I love my silvertip! Like everyone eelse has already said, Dave and Beth are great people to deal with, and the bow shoots like a dream!
I like em so much that I'm ordering another one in the near future as a 50th birthday present to myself.
I really haven't shot many other recurves, but why bother now?
Lee
-
After owning 40+ custom bows from lots of custom bowyers I'd rate Silvertips as one of the best built bows made today. I own 4 of them and my preference is the FF models.
-
I really can't add anything that already has not already been said.
The fact that I ordered 2 new ones just today pretty much sums up how I feel about them.
And Beth and Dave are awesome as already stated.
-
anyone that has shot one of my silvertips just say WOW!!!..and Dave and Beth are the greatest.... Scott
-
I had a tip before and I have one on order right now! Cannot wait, this one has some extras like checkered grip and the FF option. "tips" TRULY shoot where you are looking no doubt.
Dave and Beth are awesome people, can't say enough about them or working with them.
You will not go wrong with a "tip"
Later

There is nothing I can add except that I have owned or shot all the big name bows and I sell or swap 5 to 10 bows a year but the four Silvertips stay. My bride had Dave make me a takedown longbows for my retirement that is not only a great shooter but one of the best looking bows I have ever seen. I let my hunting buddy shoot it and he now has five Silvertips and another on order. Tom
-
how do they handle heavy arrows?
-
Craig; Thank you for posting pics of my latest Silvertip ! I shoot 62# w/ 650 gr. 2020's, I also shoot Mostly 4 vanes on an elevated rest.
-
My tip is 53#@27" and I'm shooting Arrow Dynamic Trads that weigh 630gr with no problem.
-
My Silvertip will digest anything from a 1916 on the light but safe side all the way to a 2018 and it really likes the easton axis 500 full length w/100grn brass inserts. My tip is 60" long and 52#'s at 28". They are by far the smoothest, most pointable curve I have ever handled. Hard hitting and very quiet. I have 2 and I am not stopping there. Good Luck
-
I shoot a wide range of wood shafts threw my #57 from 60# up to 85# spine, shafts I have had from different bows I really can't see any difference in the way they fly from light to heavy spine they have all flown great. I do not bare shaft test or shoot broadhead arrows out of all of them.
-
Where's Scott Dillon ( Caracajou )?? He owns a few Silvertips.
-
Scott Dillon is a new man in 2007. A one bow man (Schafer recurve) who promised not to be tempted by any other bows. He's currently in bow rehab and is expected out any day, I'm sure he'll check in soon!
-
:wavey:
WHEW!!!
Hi Sergio, and Hello Tim!!! Rehab was tough, but I made it thru!
Where do I start?? I have been shooting Silvertips, both longbows and recurves, for the past 12 years...I have owned a bunch of them, and still have some on hand.
Every time I pick the bows up, I marvel at the craftsmanship, the sleek, unobtrusive lines, the gorgeous woods...then, I go out doors and shoot the HECK out of them!
As for a true hunting bow, there is nothing that compares to a Silvertip recurve. They are quiet, and fast! Dacron or FF, it doesnt matter!
Now on to customer service;
Dave Windauer and his lovely wife Beth are top notch! They will build you a bow of your wildest dreams, the sky is the limit! Dave is blessed having beth to do most of the P.R. while he is building bows, that gal knows her stuff!
They stand behind there products 100%, and even years down the road when most bowyers warranties run out, they will still do their best to repair or replace if you have any problems with their bows.
Dave set out in life to become a World Class Bowyer, to craft a little bit of Paul's spirit into each and every bow he makes, and he has definitely obtained that status!
Sergio has some of the nicest looking Silvertips I have ever seen, and Tim just ordered another, I have another one coming TOMORROW!
1/4 Away (Fred) went on my reccomendations earlier this year, and now read HIS post above!
IT DONT GIT NO BETTER! ;)
-
QUOTE::::"I have another one coming TOMORROW!"
Tomorrow.......Holly Cow Scott, sounds like your were bow swapping from you hospital room! A certified "BOW JUNKIE"!!! Dude, you need to be medicated!
-
I have been trad hunting for about a year with an old( as if there were any other kind) Indian Archery recurve.I missed once at the end of the season last year and three times this year. I found this site and read all about peoples Silvertips. I also remember the original articles about Paul Schafer in Bowhunter Magazine. One thing lad to another and I ordered one in Oct. Then I couldn't stand the wait and found one on ebay. I got it on Sat Dec. 2nd. I put a 2315 on the string moved the nock up some and it shoots bullets!!! Wed. Dec 6th was the first chance I got to hunt with it. I hunted the same tree I had missed out of 3 weeks earlier. A doe came by and stood almost in the same place I missed and I hit her exactly where I was looking. She went about 40yds and piled up. Most of Y'all will probably think that was just coincidence or plain luck. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. You won't ever convince me though. I love my Silvertip and can't wait for the next one in Aug.

Here's a photo of my son and I, along with our two Silvertips.

Hey Tim, what are the woods on your Tip? Got any pics that show it better? I'm getting ready to order one and don't have a clue what woods I'm going with!
Guss
-
I guess I have to wade in here as well- I can understand your quandry- I also own a Black Douglas- actually three of them- and I think that Sid builds a bow that has few rivals. I have played with a few good bows, but I would put my Silvertip second only to my BD. It is not quite as fast, but it does have something going for it that also stands out beyond all others. I find it to be equally forgiving, and exceedingly sweet to shoot. I would definitely vote for the Silvertip!
-
Poor chuckies...they were just babies...how could you? :)
Penetration is questionable.
-
longpoint...is the speed difference great? which do you prefer to shoot? I've pretty much decided to go with the 'tip. I'll order it as soon as my dang lefty ACS sells. you'd think it'd go fast, but I'm having a little trouble getting rid of it.
-
SERGIO, check your PMs
-
TTT
-
My FF Tip I received in october has action bamboo cores and kingwood veneers. I shoot gold tips and had to go with 75-95 spine to get it to bare shaft. It's 63@29 and very consitant!
-
arrow4christ, i don't have any hard #'s but if there is a speed difference between the two it would be minimal and probably only noticeable w/ a chrono. tips are performers
-
Sergio
We have never met, but I've hald one of your Sivertips in may hands, and I hold you partly responsible for me shooting a Predator!
A number of years ago, when I was looking at what kind of recurve I was going to move to, a buddy from work, a Mr. John Robb talked of the bows his brother and a Mr. Sergio Venneri were particularly fond of (a bow I'd never heard of) the Pittsley Predator.
Somewhere around the same time he had picked up a Silvertip for you that had the limbs done in some kind of african predator camo, tiger or something. A beautiful bow.
To make a long story short, after shooting lotsa bows (no Sivertips however), some a lot more expensive than the Predator (but not correspondingly better), I have and hunt only one bow, a Predator.
Thank you!
-
A4C, According to Dave the FF is about 8 fps faster than the dacron. Fred
-
I had to cancel an order for one due to an earthquake and a well going dry, but by far the best wood risered bow I have ever shot and I wouldn't think twice about ordering one again someday.

-
I build and shoot longbows mostly now. But with that being said, my back up is a tip. They are an awesome bow and as mentioned elsewhere the customer service is second to none. Dave and Beth are great people.
-
Hey Neil;
So you're the one that tried to steal my Silvertip Back then! LOL. John told me all about you. Glad to hear that you are shooting traditional! Those Predators are great shooting bows, I own a couple of them also, Ron is another top notch Bowyer. I still have that Zebra Silvertip, that was a 62" model, i was shooting that one with 65# black glass limbs Moose hunting this past Fall. Dead on out to 60 yds.
Give my regards to John.
Sergio
-
look what a tip does to you...I was looking at Tim Golder's silvertips and never even seen the chucks only to read someone else's post and had to go back an look again..can't keep my eye off of them...
-
this has been the most informative thread on a particular bow i've ever seen! Thanks for the input guys! I'm ordering a Silvertip!
-
They say "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder..", but even a blind man could appreciate a Silvertip!
(I know I haven't met one yet I didn't like!) :D
Here's mine:

Paul Schafer will always be an unknowing mentor to me, and a Silvertip will always be in my rack.
My thanks to Dave & Beth for keeping this great name and bow alive. :clapper:

Here's a favorite picture of a Slivertip I owned and sold to Scott Dillon. All my hunting buddies called it "The Cannon"

A little too fast for my liking. But a great bow. This blood trail was from my first deer taken in Oct. of '05.

Bishop,
If a pic is worth a thousand words, Yours is an exception! "DAMN!" just about says it all. There's one beautiful bow and some good shooting!
(Most of us don't match our broadheads to the size of the HEADS our quarry, though!! You must be a shed hunter, and really hate them Tree Rats!)
:biglaugh:
>>--Ron--<>
-
Hi Jeff;
Just curious as to why you wouldn't just use a heavier arrow with your Silvertip to slow it down instead of selling it. I also find them extremely fast, so i use a heavy arrow , which gives me great momentum and penetration??
Sergio
-
Thanks Ron. I had a good 12 yard shot and took it. I have shot 2 deer with that bow with 160 grain Snuffers and had pass thrus on both. Awsome bows!
-
Awesome bows...And HEADS!! Snuffers are serious slicers!
>>--Ron--<>
-
I'm just curius as to how many Silvertip shooters also use Snuffers?? Seems like a natural combo to me.
-
Manny;
i'll be in Ottawa the last week of February, taking my wife to a Josh Groban Concert.Email me your phone # so that I can contact you.
-
Anyone know Ken Grosslight? He's the guy on the Schafer Silvertip web site who killed the Jaguar? I'm curious when and where that was done, I thought they were protected, I guess not in all countries.
-
I guess I'll chime in here. This past fall while looking for a L.H. Tip I was sent a link from 1/4away and found a L.H.der used. It turned out to be one of the originals that Paul had made..62" and 57#@28". After tuning and practicing for about four days I took it hunting. Now I have alway shot shorter bow so I had my doughts about it being a good treestand bow but soon found the lenth to be uncumbersome and very smooth to draw. The second day of hunting with this bow I took a Buck with it. The first arrow right behind the front shoulders and out the other side..the Deer switched ends and stood there long enough to get another arrow off and that one went in right in front of the Hindquarts and busted two ribs on the off side as we was turning to leave. Needless to say he didn't go very far. I am very impressed with this bow and will keep it. I have a second set of limbs on order for it and will be taking it to Canada for Bear next fall...awesome bows.
-
A4C,
In response to the speed comparison- I have never shot the bows using a chrono, so this is my subjective opinion. However, I would think most would concur. The BD flings an arrow with a savage youthful exuberance, whereas the Silvertip shows an elegant quiet confidence that delivers with authority. I doubt that the difference in speed would make any real world difference, unless one were taking one of those shots at the limit of their range. Properly sized for its intended use- they would both deliver.
Here's an image of the two for a bit of eye indulgence. Also put my Border Reiver in between these two lovlies...............

-
My bow will be a 62" 63#@29" (I draw 29.5" though) lefty 3piece takedown FF Silvertip with grip checkering. The limbs are Actionwood on the face with dymondwood wedges and the riser is also dymondwood. I was lucky to have talked to Beth when I did, I needed the bow in 4 or so months and the wait time is 9-10. I asked about stock limbs and they had some in the right poundage range(PRAISE GOD!). The bow will be here in about 4 months. I'm pumped up to say the least! God bless all you guys for all the help! This is one awesome thread, and the best bow thread ever! What was a tough decision became easy after this thread.
-
Beth is great gal aint she! Which dymondwood did you go with? My FFTip is 63@29 and I'm shooting a 75-95 GT in it.
-
she's awesome! it's walnut dymondwood. that's what the stock limbs had on the wedges, so that's what she suggested for a riser. the limbs were exactly what I wanted! no fancy woods, right poundage, everything! I wanted my bow to be a good, solid hunting bow that had all the performance enhancing options without many cosmetic ones, which is what I got. Pretty woods are great, but to my eye, the prettiest bow is one that looks like a tough hunting bow. that's what this will be.
-
My next one will be with the camo limbs. I know they are not necessary, but nothing speaks Silvertip to me than the camo limbs. I first was exposed to them in Bowhunting October Whitetails when Barry Wensel shot a Silvertip with the camo limbs. I then called Paul about a bow, but didn't have the money them, with two growing boys. I regret that now!
Dave makes a great bow, and now that I already ahve one, the 10 month wait won't be so bad.(yeah, right!)
I know it's a cliche, but they really do shoot where you point them. I'm shooting 58#at 27", and am shooting Beman Max 4's with 145 grain magnus 2 blades, and my tip just smokes the arrow out.

-
camo is a good option Lee. they really do look good on Silvertips. with the stock limbs, this is what I got though, which is probably what I would've chosen anyway. the Silvertip is the only bow I can think of on which I really like the camo.
-
I know what you mean! My first Silvertip, they had the limbs in my draw weight and length already, so I just got the riser that went along with the limbs, and cut my wait down to 4 months.
Now that I have one, my next one is gonna be the camo limbs. Not necessary, but cool looking!
It's probably jsut me, but when I picture a Silvertip, the camo limbs just pop into my mind.
It's almost like a signature look for Silvertips in my mind.
Does anyone have the checkered grip option, and do you consider it worth having? Just a question.
Lee
-
Lee,
I had a Blacktail with a checkered grip...did not like it, the checkering was so big it was non functional IMO. I got the checkering on my 'tip; it is like a fine doulble...well worth it.
I do not like the camo limbs though; they are classic Silvertip, but I like the fancy wood better ;)
I'm going to get more of them someday. When I draw my MT Bighorn Sheep tag, I'm going to have Dave build a SPECIAL one
-
Steve,
Good luck on the sheep tag! Of course pics of the sheep and 'Tip will be required! I know in emails with Beth, Dave drew a goat tag, and got one. She wasn't sure if he took pics. If anyone know, please tell me!
I guess we are all a little prejudiced about or Silvertips, but this is a great thread, and I would recommend them to anyone!
Lee
-
Just an added question for all you Silvertip shooters. When you are out with your bow hunting or shooting, do you all feel a little bit of Paul with you on the hunt? I get that feeling alot in the woods. Even though Dave made mine, I feel that connection whenever I use it! Not trying to get eerie or anything, jsut wondering?
Lee
-
I went with the checkering...hope I like it.
-
I'm supposed to get my first tip this week. It's about 6 months old. I can't wait to shoot it. Hopefully I will get it Monday.
-
Lee,
Yep, I hope that is the case. I feel like he is from "my" generation. The old duffers are great, but it is nice to have a non-senior citizen who has "done-it-all". Before I ordered my Silvertip in 2005, I went out to Montana. I started in the Great Falls airport where some of Paul's trophies are diplayed and made a BIG circle, sightseeing and shooting bows the whole way. I posted a thread here on TradGang with pics, but I cannot find it anywhere.
-
Steve O......
That would be neat if you could drum up some of those pictures.
Where do you live also. I am in New Hudson......
Tim ;-)
-
The checkering on the Tip feels good, I would recommend it. Steve O, I'm with you, I like that pretty wood! I'm shooting a Tip I got off of here, it shoots great, but I'm thinking about ordering a new one. It will be my first custom order, not sure exactly what I want, but it helps to see what others have ordered. To me, the history of the bows and the story's about Paul add alot to the bow. Guss

where'd ya get that quiver Steve? I love grizzlies and it's my dream to hunt em someday.
-
Thunderhorn, it is an extra $10, they have a few animals to choose from.
-
Lee,
Here's a pic of my Silvertip w/ it's Camo limbs on and checkered grip on stand and ready for action. The checkering is OUTSTANDING and I highly recommend it.

Great pics! been there too, its a great tribute to Paul...
For those Lefty's out there, I have a close Bud, who might be selling an Original Schafer Silvertip w/3 sets of limbs and a Silvertip longbow; PM me for details.....
-
They are great bows. I test drove one a while back, it was fast and stable. It was the FF model, 60" long. Pulled very smooth out to my 30" draw. You'll be happy with it....Mike
-
Here's a few close up photos of my bow and my son's. I don't have any real nice photos but I'll get back with some as soon as it stops raining. Both of these bows are ff Schafers so the risers are dymondwood...these are both Dave's walnut dymondwood. I'm a huge fan of his ff bows, they have such a great feel after the shot. No vibration, extremely quiet and shoot a heavy arrow very well.
(http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f281/Wyoming1/IMG_068612-1.jpg) (http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f281/Wyoming1/img_104712.jpg)
-
Tim, what wood shows through on the face of your bow? I got the walnut dymondwood riser as well. Does the accent stripe through the middle of the riser come standard, or is that an extra option. THANKS!
-
I found them to be decent bows.... Not worth the new price tag, but they were ok.
-
Craig,
My whole bow is pretty much a plain jane. The riser has no upgrades, except it's a ff model. The limbs are real plain...just Dave's standard limbs with antler tips. I do have antler knobs which spruces the bow up a bit.
I do have a second set of limbs that have russian olive veneers. I'll take a photo of them for you. They are drop dead gorgeous and have kudo tips. That may be something you want to consider. The russian olive limbs give my bow a totally different look. I use them alot in the summer at shoots.
My son's bow has the brown camo limbs with antler tips. Again, I'll get some good photos of both bows.
Tim
-
At $670 starting price that aint too bad!
-
I agree with Bishop , the pricing on a Silvertip is about a 3rd less than another popular custom Bow, and it was'nt designed by the worlds best Bowhunter ever (IMHO).
-
i agrre w/ bishop and sergio!! the schafers are very reasonably priced for a high end custom bow. i got all the options on mine and it was still less than other top bows w/ less extra's
-
Tim, I won't have that option. I got stock limbs. I would like to see pics of your fancy and standard ones though if ya got em! love to see what mine will look like! does anybody shoot one with the elevated rest Dave offers as an option with his bows?
-
Craig; i shoot all my Silvertips with an elevated rest and I use 4-41/2" shield cut vanes on most of my arrows. I use the golden eagle hard rubber rests, of which i cut off the bottom 1/3 of the finger for more flexibilty. String nock is 5/8" above 90 and I get perfect arrow fite with this combo. Will try to email you pics of my set up tomorrow.
-
Maxwell(Bill) in the duplicate posts above, has a few Lefty Silvertips for sale...contact him thru his Email, or PM him if you are interested....
-
Sergio, if you email them to me I'll post them here. Jsut wanted to comment on the Windauers. They're some of the nicest, most helpful people with the best customer service I've ever dealt with! Emails are responded to lightning fast! I gave them a phone number (I wanted to talk to Dave about some options) and said Dave could call any time. I didn't know he would call the SAME INSTANT she got the message! LOL He was very helpful and helped me decide on an elevated rest. Awesome people! SERGIO, where do you get shield cut vanes?
-
Also gave me some chrono numbers. FF model, 60#@28" 540 grain arrow, 195fps. Blazing!
-
Mine all Bocote, antler knobs, checkered grip etc is coming in about 1050.00 but worth it
-
The chrono numbers on my 62" dacron bow are: 59@29 580 grain arrow 182FPS and dead quite. I haven't shot the FF bow through the chrono.
Here are a couple of the FF pics Rosewood Diamond Wood riser and Kingwood actionboo core limbs

Hi Keith;
i changed from shooting off the shelf in 1984, the first time I met Schafe. After shooting with him . I kept right up with him up to 30 yds, we were both shooting tight groups, after that i was embarassed! at 60yds-80yds, it was absolutely no contest.Anyway he extolled the benefits of having the arrow off the shelf. You see once you get out past your point on range, the target area gets so small and you bow hand is so high that it actually covers the small spot on the animal (target) that you are supposed to concentrate on.
Put the arrow above the shelf and now you can see the target between the arrow and the shelf.Voila ! perfect sight picture! I put one that Paul gave me on my Bow and my shooting improved immediately. The other benefit is of course the ability to shoot vanes , the great things about them is that they are quiet in flite, quiet stalking if they should rub on something, and of course absolutely warerproof.I use 4-41/2 in shield cut vanes, that i make by putting a 5" parabolic vane in my sheild cut little chopper and cutting a 1/2 in off the back end. They shoot great.
If Craig wants to post them ,i've got 4 pics of Shafe shooting in sequence that i can email him.
-
Send em to me Sergio, I'll post em ASAP. What type of vanes do you buy? Can't seem to find any 5 inchers.
-
Marc;
Thats a gorgeous looking Silvertip!!!
-
Thanks Sergio,
I remember some of the pics of yours you emailed me last year! I didn't hunt the FF this past season even though I received it late October. With 4 more pounds actionboo and FF it shoots much flatter than what I was used to. I got the fox squirrel on my last hunt of the year with the Dacron bocote bow. I'm waiting on my little girl to be born and it ended my season a bit early. No she's late but hopefully she will be her by weeks end!
-
You guys are talking about point on and long range shooting; I have to tell you a little story.
Sunday I was supposed to meet a buddy at our archery club, early, to do a little stump shooting before church. He was late, so I decided I would find my point on range with my Silvertip. It ended up being 45 yards. So, he finally gets there and we start bsing over by his truck. So I'm explaining the whole thing and showing him the little Blazer vanes and he wants to see it work...so I let one rip and DRILL the target, which from his truck was 75 yards and on a 45 degree angle  . I don't know if I could ever do that again, but it was perfect timing and those Silvertips are MAGIC! He DID clean my clock stump shooting ;)
-
SERGIO, I can't find 4.5" blades for the Little Chopper...do you use the 5" ones?

here are Sergio's pics...there's one more that will be up soon...
-
Craig;
I use the 5in. little chopper and move the vane back 1/2 in. on the little chopper.once I got the cut I want, I mark the forward spot on the chopper with a sharpie marker pen.
Good luck
-
Thanks, that's what I'll do!

-
Bishop, FF models of the same weight will shoot 8fps faster, according to Dave.
-
Great photos A4C. Thanks for sharing. I have the Bowhunter Magazine TV episode that features Paul recorded on my DVR.
Those are some beautiful bows, I'm positive that a Silvertip will be my next bow purchase.
-
Thanks for sharing the pictures guys!
Craig,
I thik the actionboo even kicks up the performance another notch beyond FF!
-
Bishop, would actionwood perform the same as actionboo? I believe Dave told me that the best performing veneer was the actionwood, which I would assume is about the same weight as the actionboo? thanks,
craig
-
I don't know because I don't have 2 identicial sets of limbs with boo vs wood. The boo draws very smooth and I have heard from other bowyers it will increase performance. Actionboo is not listed I had to ask for it. It was a $20 option.
-
This is a Silvertip made by Paul for his friend Bart Schleyer.

-
Wow Bucksaw.....
Care to share the story in how that bow became yours?
That has to be a valuable bow based on both of them being gone now.
Tim
-
Pete Iacavazzi had the bow up for sale here on Trad Gang to raise funds for Bart's son. It was originally thought to be the bow that Bart used to kill the brown bear in that now famous photo that included Bart, Paul, Jeff Boothe and Brad Adams, but was found not to be (I want that one BAD).
When I get caught up on some other projects I want to order limbs from Dave & Beth for Bart's riser and hunt moose with it.
It is my favourite bow and a nice collectable piece of bowhunting history.
-
Well you have a beauty there! Glad to see it is in good hands.
Thanks for sharing the pics. I can imagine maybe some strange feelings come over you when you wrap your hands around that grip. ;-)
Tim
-
I've owned a LB and a REC and will own more in future. Dave builds an awesome bow....if you like medium sized risers with some mass on your recurve you should consider one.
If you like quiet, smooth drawing longbows you definitely should have a STP LB in your stable as well.
I think I sold this one to Knife River??
-
Ray,
What were the woods?
Dang it now I'm starting to want another one!
-
Sergio~
Those pics of Schaf' are great, it gives you some perspective of his shooting abilities...kickin around in the back yard with flip flops on, and look at that intense concentration, and dead-on, arrow - under-the-eye form!
Every bow that Dave builds has Schaf's spirit permanently installed.
You wont find a better, quieter, fancier recurve out there...anywhere!
-
Hi Scott;
Just spoketo Dave a couple of hours ago about a new set of limbs for my 62" grey actionwood riser that Paul built for me just before he left us. It's my work horse bow !! I 'm amazed t how well I can shoot it out to 60 yds.!!Notice in the pic how high Paul anchored and when he hit full draw he would then drop his head(eyes) right over the arrow.Awesome!
-
Bishop,
the riser was an unusual one in that it was dyed bocote with a shedua double wave bordered with black phenolic, checkered grip.
The limbs were zebra wood dyed to match the riser with shedua limb wedges/fadeouts to match wave in riser. FF compatible. Quite an elegant bow that accounted for several pigs and deer before I sent it to someone else to make memories with!
Carcajou,
What strikes me about those photos is Paul's back in the full draw picture. It's curved, just like Howard Hill's in some photos I have seen...the mark of someone pulling heavy bows for fun!!!!
Maybe everyone's back looks like that but I have not seen it in too many photos.
-
Ray Hammond,
I am the proud owner of that Silvertip now. I bought from KnifeRiver over a year ago. I've since added a set of 78# limbs and absolutely adore that bow. :goldtooth:
-
Sergio~
Great analysis! You are blessed to have been able to share some laughs and shooting with The World's Greatest Bowhunter!
Ray! look at the biceps on him :scared: heavy bows were his specialty..look at the loose grip on that bow too, if that aint perfect form, I dont know what is! :notworthy:
-
Mike that is one Sexy Beast! I wanted an exotic riser and the FF option but they won't put a warranty on a FF exotic, so I went rosewood diamondwood on the FF bow. I need to get my riser checkered!
-
Tim:
You are right. It is special to know that Paul crafted the bow and that Bart hunted with it. I would like to use the original limbs but one has a slight twist. Not that I could draw them anyway, as they are to be in the 90 lb range. It will be neat to hunt with it some day.
-
would love to see more silvertip photos. was on a tight budget when i ordered a schafer silver ghost back in 87, wish i would have sprung for a silvertip. still shooting that bow today.
-
Anybody writes "Schafer" or "Silvertip", I start drooling.
What a great thread this is.
I have a 25th wedding anniversary coming up, and have been dropping hints about a "silvertip"..
Let's keep this thread going. any more photos of Paul?
-
And to Sergio, thank you for posting that description of shooting with Paul. amazing.
-
I'll try and scan some pics of Paul over the next couple of days when he was very young and post them for tradgangers to view.
-
Very nice bows. I sold mine as I prefer my Marriah Thermal and Habu, but the Silvertips are great.
BD
-
jeanpaul, here's a few pics of my "tip". She's not real fancy but still a beauty in my eyes...Fred

1/4 - Thats a sweet bow. Is that ebony with osage?
-
T, It's charcoal dymondwood with yew. Fred
-
1/4 away, thanks for the photos, beautiful example of a dressed up silvertip, keep them coming.gonna have to apply some snake skin to my bow, looks great.
-
1/4 away, Georgeous bow!!! Love that Charcoal riser!!
Here's most of my Sivertips...I love them all but my favorite is the original Paul made me back in '89 (3rd bow from the right). It's quite a shooter! I have a 58" one-piece that is not shown....a truly worthy weapon for those that have not shot one!!! Light weight mass but a real heavy hitter! Ckeckered grips are a must!!!
-
purdy good bows, be sure to get the dymondwood riser if ya go with the silvertip. its a really stable shooting bow. i own 6 of them. 3 by Paul and 3 by Dave. they just kept getting better as i ordered them. :)
Billy
-
Bob, Thanks. It was after seeing your bow with the charcoal riser that I bought mine. The snakeskin limbs that are on it make a 60" bow. I also have the original limbs that make a 58" bow. They are yew with antler nocks. Awesome bows to say the least!! Fred
-
Heres my new to me, freshly skinned Tip. (http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q89/silvertip07/IMGP1085.jpg)

(http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q89/silvertip07/IMGP1099.jpg) I did it myself following the skin along in the how to section.
-
I knew I'd screw up. The riser pics are upside down. Oh well.
-
Wow, I posted this thread expecting to get 6 or 7 responses!!! lol any doubt I had about ordering one has been ERASED! LOL Sergio, out of pure curiosity, do you know what arrows and broadheads Dave Windauer is shooting? Snuffers maybe :D
-
Dave shoots the wood grain looking Easton aluminums and Zwickey broadheads as far as I know.
-
Hi Craig;
I believe Dave is shooting swaged 2018 Aluminums with 4 Blade zwickey eskimo's and 4' shield cut vanes.
-
Michael; Great looking Silvertip!! Very nice skin job,too scared to attempt it myself yet! See you also shoot 3 fingers under, elevated rest and Snuffers . Great Combo.
-
Craig; Any luck selling your adcock ?? I,m working on the Pics. Back at ya soon.
-
Craig; the shield cut vanes Dave uses are Marco vanes, in case you were wondering.
-
Sergio; If I can do it anyone can. I promise :bigsmyl:
-
Sergio, it's on eBay now and I have an offer on it if it doesn't sell there, so I'm set up :D bow's already ordered.
-
Sergio, what are your opinions on the 4-fletch? I've heard that it would slow the arrow down considerably, and that worries me a little. I was thinking of doing it with 4-4" shield cut vanes in a 60-120 pattern.
-
Craig;
4-4in. vanes at 60-120 will work just fine. For years i fletched with 4-51/2 in. banana fletch installed at 60-120 with such a tight helical that they almost wrapped around the shaft on 2216's, i had to file my jo jan fletcher with a lrge ratail file to get the extra helical. I used to practice out to 80yds and had no problems with arrow speed! Now that i'm older and need glasses i only practice out to 60yd.
-
Sergio, do the shield cuts make extra noise? I talked with my father some and he thinks they'd be noisier than parabolics :(
-
Craig;
Absolutely NO NOISE at all In any Shape!! I've shortened them in, parabolic, banana and shield ,no sound from any cut! I just like the look of shield cut and I think they steer a little better.Pics soon.
-
I made a 3-fletched shield cut Axis arrow with vanes. I need to finish it up then tip it with a Snuffer then I'll post pics :D
-
A question for the guys with multiple Silvertips. Are the limbs tillered different for shooting off the shelf vs an elevated rest?
-
Bishop~
In response...Yep.
-
It looks like the rain vanes for me if I want to try vanes!
-
Mike, did you get those stock limbs I told you about? ;)
-
Mike I use a Delta when I use a bow quiver. It's the Fred Bear quiver that most vendors sell. It has large thumb screws and I take it off on the stand. The only time I use a bow quiver is when I'm packing a stand the rest of time its a home made GFA type. For me if I have to shoot with a quiver on the Delta has been quiter than the Kwikee.
-
That Delta is dang near as slick! Part of the fun of ordering a Silvertip is the 10 month wait!
Boy am I getting full of it!
-
Hi Mike; I guess you didn't get my response to your email. sorry having computer problems off and on, am in the process of deciding on Apple or pc for a new laptop!?
I use a kwikee quiver on most of my Silvertips and LOVE it!! I also take my quver off while on stand. As for the tiller difference shooting off the shelf or elevated rest, I personally think there is no difference because the most you could probably move it is about 1/4 inch and that amount has never made any difference with me.I Shoot a damascus Glove and triple serve my string for finger comfort.I should mention that for my 58" one piece 'Tip ,that I have never shot, i have a bear spring arm leathertop 4 arrow quiver for it.
-
mike, i use the kwikee kwiver on my silvertip recurve. i like to take the quiver off too and thats the best one for me. on my tip LB i use the thunderhorn boa and keep it on all the time.
-
I too use the quikee quiver. I ahd Dave tap my silvertip for it!
Lee
-
I have a selway qucik detach and really like it. It dampens any noise or vibration that comes from the bow, which to begin with is almost non existent.
-
If you do not mind me asking, can you interchange your limbs and risers. As can you take a riser and any set of limbs and put them on, or do you have to have the limbs made to fit the riser. I hope this sounds right. Alan
-
Thanks Mike; Yup ! thats just one of my Silvertip Beauties, I've got a stable full of them. My draw length is 29' and for many years I shot a 68# @ 29" 58 in. Silvertip, now that I'm older I'm really enjoying My grey action wood black limbed 62" 65# Silvertip.I've got some beauties that have never been shot.
I know you are really going to enjoy yours!!
-
sergio pls post a pic on your whole stable full of tips we want to see em all.for those of us tips on order this thread is killing us!why is that you havent shot them all?
-
exactlty! MORE photos of silvertips, and Mr. Schafer, please!!

Here's a pic from the Schafer website...

-
How many bows will Dave sell based on this thread?!
-
He may have to stop building new bows like OL Adcock :D
-
Getting back to the question of quvers . I have a different way of attaching the thunderhorn or selway quivers to any takedown Bow. I promise to take sequential pics today , if someone would like to volunteer to post them. Craig has been very kind and patient about posting for me, but i don't want to over do my welcome there. Thanks Craig.
-
No such thing as "over doing" your welcome with me Sergio! I'll post all the pics you can throw at me! BRING IT ON! LOL You have been kind in answering all my ridiculous questions :D Thank YOU for the pics. In the process of transfering the ones you just sent me into PhotoBucket to post.

I'm shield cutting my vanes with scissors...works surprisingly well. I'll post pics 2morrow.
-
Ya!(thats Canadian talk)LOL, I think it's a pretty neat way to attach the Selway/Thunderhorn type quivers ,all my friends are using this stsetm now.The shield cuts work real well , chop real easy and you can make them any length you want.
-
Wow, those Silvertips sure look like awesome bows!!! I am in the market for a new recurve, and I will have to test drive one.
Glad Arrow4Christ told me about this thread.
Brett
-
whitetail chaser your doomed if you found this site.may as well call beth now.i actually ordered my silvertip just about the time this thread started now i check it couple times a day
-
this thread must not die! LOL here is a pic of Sergios rest and how he trims it. It looks close to the Saber one I have ordered from TradMall Sergio...I'll post a pic of it too.
Here is Sergio's.
Here is the one I ordered for my Border...anyone know what type of rest Dave Windauer sends out with his bows?
-
I believe it is a Bear Weathrest, but mine was all set up with moleskin when he sent it.
-
so I just ask Dave to set it up like his? I like the way he had yours' done.
-
Craig;
I prefer the rest that I use because the rubber is nuch harder and slicker than either the weather rest or the one in you picture. I have experimented with many other rubber rests and much prefer the Golden eagle, jennings or the hard rubber hoyt, which i have on my 62" Silvertip. Also really like a brush rest (don't know if you received pics of it on my 60" dymond wood Silvertip?? let me know if you received those pics.
-
I may have to try a rest. Should you put it as low to the shelf as possible?
-
RCG,
That is all I did...ask for Dave to set it up like his.
-
No PM here Sergio.
-
Guys,
Just got my new Silvertip (#2) last night. Rosewood riser with the"wave". Will post some pics soon. :)
-
Details, Jeff, Details!!!
-
Marc; Just tried to PM you again ,please advise ?? having 'puter problems.
-
No, I'll try you.
-
Nothing yet Mike.
Marc, just tried you Again.
-
Not hoping to change the thread in anyway, but I will tell you what my recent question has been.
Do I want a Black Widow PSA or a Silvertip?
I have shot widows in the past, and I will see if I can try out a Silvertip soon.
The worksmanship looks top notch on the Silvertips, and they carry with them more history and spirit than the Widow. I remember reading the TBM with Paul on the cover back in the early '90's and asking my uncle "Who was Paul Schafer?" Little did I know.....
Thanks everyone. Dave probably will get a bow order from me (partly because of this thread).
Brett
-
Brett, I answered you on the other thread. I have both and can't go wrong with either one. The Silvertip works the best for me. I plan on keeping both of my Widows because after shooting the PSA11 it reminds why I have picked the Tips!
Black Widow has a huge legacy of preserving stickbow manufacturing and don't dicount what the company and thier bows have accomplished.
With that being said Paul built many of the forms Dave is using now and a little bit Paul is still going out with each Silvertip!
Sergio,
Still nothing.
-
Thanks Bishop
-
Guys- I recieved my 2nd silvertip in late November. I noticed after a member on here pointed out that the riser is not as wide as my other silvertip. Anyone know if Dave changed it up a bit to loose some mass? No complaints, just curious. Thanks
-
Hi, Great thread does anyone know how to or if you can use a Great Northern quick attach quiver with the antler bolts? I have a strap on on it right now, it tapped for a Kwiki (wrong spelling) i think, i'm not all that fond of that quiver style just checking. Thanks
-
Talked to Beth today and have a demo on the way next week.
I will try to post some pics/info.
Brett
-
Brett,
Is it dacron or FF?
-
Insanity, I say...insanity...16 pages of posts regarding Schafer recurves? Can they be that good? :)
-
Yeah, they are that good !!!!!!!!
-
Yeah, they are that good!
-
Ken,
I think I said it earlier. For 3 or 4 years, I kept one "extra" bow around as trade bait. I just kept trading one top of the line bow for another. I tried just about every recurve out there and I picked the Silvertip. BUT, everybody is different. Now as far as Black Widows go...Ken Beck is a super guy (and his wife too--we were lucky enough to be at the same table at a PBS dinner last year) but I just do not see why everybody raves about them. I have tried at least a half a dozen of them (because I LOVE the way they look and WANT to like how they shoot) but each and every one has left me unimpressed. Same with the Habu recurves.
-
I just received my 4th tip. Ebony riser with amarillo crescent wave, checkered grip, limbs have actionboo core with tulipwood vaneers, sheep horn tips and limb bolts. SWEET!
-
ghostman ,where in maryland are you from?im in deleware and would love to shoot a tip.mines on order only 215 more days aprox. whitetailchaser i told you you were hooked when you got on this thread good for you

Jeff; That is an absolutely awesome 'Tip!! I've got some Beauties, but Dave really outdid himself on this one. Have fun shooting!!
-
Jeff, that is a sweet bow! Love those skins!
-
Jeff Sample~ That's a beautiful bow!
I'm waiting on my first Silvertip~ placed the order last October after shooting a test bow Beth sent me. Needless to say the wait is killing me. Thanks for the Silvertip fix guys! lol
-
Well I'll have to keep this one going:) - Jeff what a beauty that is.....I've got a plain walnut Silvertip and I love it. Shoots great and the finish hangs tough even when you fall through the ice and partially submerge the lower limb:)
I will probably end up with a beaut like yours at some point or maybe I'll just buy lower # limbs when I get too creaky to pull it back.
And Sergio, your collection is priceless - good stuff man!
-
Yeah Ghostman- sure would like to see some pics of your ebony/amarillo bow!!!
-
If you have a ST can you just buy the limbs from anyone or just from Dave, and he has to fit them to the riser. Alan
-
Jeff, that bow is just too pretty to actually hunt with! Better use your PSE Impalla for hunting and let me have that one........

Alan; S T limbs have to be fitted to riser and tillered. It would be Sheer luck to have used limbs fit a different riser.
-
How does the Silvertip compare in weight to a Palmer with the double limb bolts?? Thanks, Jim
-
Sergio, Tried the 4-fletch shield cut vanes on my Axis arrows and like it so far. here are some pics of the arrows I'm using now and that will be flying outta the Silvertip.
This is the tip, 160gr Snuffer on 42gr adapter with an aluminum footing.
this is just to show how tight of a fit the 75x105 4fletch is on the Axis.
Here is a 4fletch and a 3fletch I made with shield cut vanes...love the vanes! I chop em with a knife. Works great.
Here is one of the several similar groups I shot last night with the 3vane on one and the 4vane on the other. Don't notice a difference in speed. The elevated rest I put on has REALLY improved my accuracy. This is at 19-20yards. Ghostman, we need our pics now please :D
-
Craig; Nice work , those arrows look great! Really like the idea of the aluminum footing at the arrow tip.Really happy this is all working out for you! What kind of vanes did you use?
You will love to shoot those arrows outof your'Tip,the sight window is radiused so vanes clear better.
-
They are AAE Elite Vanes I think. Had some old ones. Also had some Bohning FletchTite ones that sucked. I figured the plastic got old because they shattered after the first shot with them. These are really flexible and I like em. They are 5" and I only cut maybe 1/2" off.
-
Thanks for the tip Mike! I need some new vanes, my bohnings are old and getting a little stiff. Anyone know where I can buy them??
-
mike; Thank you for the info!
Marc: Congratulations!!! Life has just got better for you and it also will never be the same. After all the time, pain & effort, i hope you bought your wife a nice new Silvertip! LOL.
-
Congrats Bishop !! The only thing better than a Silvertip !!!!
-
CONGRATS BISHOP!!! God bless you and your family (the new addition too)!
Mike, I can't imagine anything being more flexible than the AAE Elite vanes. I am gonna try the Marcos when I get thru with these though!! Let us know how they work!
Sergio, Beth mentioned you on the phone today, I was like "I know that guy!" lol Thanks for all your help with the vanes and bows and everything! you've been a huge help!
-
I'm going to post a video of how I chop the vanes...
-
(http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i310/jelloats/th_DSCF1481.jpg) (http://s75.photobucket.com/albums/i310/jelloats/?action=view¤t=DSCF1481.flv)
(http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i310/jelloats/th_DSCF1479.jpg) (http://s75.photobucket.com/albums/i310/jelloats/?action=view¤t=DSCF1479.flv)
Here's the vids...The first shows how I do it...At first I'm showing how flexible these vanes are. next, I have 3 marks on my surface, one at the end of the vane, one 1/2" from the back, one at the highest point on the vane. This way I don't lose any heighth and I need all I can get when shooting big Snuffers! That's why I decided to go 4fletch, better stabilization (I may need it with these low-profile vanes!) and they look cool :) , which is why I decided on shield cut (the only way ya can get a vane to look trad! thanks Sergio!) Anyway the 2nd and 3rd mark allow me to set the correct angle to chop. I rock my blade back and forth until I've cut through. The second vid will show the finished product. I show the arrow. I also wanted you guys to see my custom 'Arrow4Christ' wraps. These arrows should steer my 200grain Snuffers. Enjoy!
BTW, I talked to Beth and got the order finalized today...bow should be here in May! So pumped! This thread will resurrect (if the darn thing ever dies) when I get the 'tip. I'll post pics and a vid of me shooting it. Thanks for all you guys' help! GOD BLESS!
Craig
-
couple of things 1st congrats bishop hope evryone is fine!second arrow4christ you may be the only man alive that is more excited than iam about getting a silvertip.lol. third sergio ive ordered 2 strings from beth and dave is that what you use or do you change to something different? we need to keep this thread going only 210 more days approx!
-
Congrats Bishop!
Keith on my Silvertip I use dacron only, not made for FF. When I got mine I ordered a few extra strings from Beth. Black/white dacron with clear serving was what I was sent. I love those strings. I then ordered a few more and they were a bit different. I think they may have been made by someone else. Black/white dacron with black serving and real heavy wax job on the loops. I cant tell any difference between the two other than the noise of the heavier waxed string sticks to the limb when I draw. I order strings from who makes my bow. Just easier for me that way and I like doing business with Dave and Beth. Love this thread!
-
yeah I'm pretty excited! so glad I started this thread...I expected maybe 6 or 7 posts at the beginning, now I've got almost 300! can't imagine starting this thread then deciding AGAINST a 'tip.
-
I agree. I have been really enjoying this one.
I feel I am at a point that I'd like to treat myself to a real nice bow. I deserve it.
I love the feedback on the DAS bow's, but the Silvertip has me loving the beauty, and the "mystique" of Schafer in one package.
(and clearly, the Silvertip is a shooter, also)
Both are obviously world class. Maybe I should buy both? (well, that will never happen)
Anyone else haveing that struggle?
-
This is a very cool thread but making it even worse on me as I am saving for my downpayment on one as we speak. And everytime I read it I get some sort of new idea or a feature I never even thought about. Heres my main one. What kind of grips do you guys get any pics of the difference between low medium and high.etc.
-
Rich, the DAS was one of the bows I was considering (you'll have to get a Dalaa if you want one, David is no longer taking orders), but for me, I don't think the metal riser would be right. I'd love to shoot one, but I'm not sure I'd enjoy the metal.
-
Arrow, exactly right. I'd love to shoot both.
Honestly, though, with bows like this, how can you go wrong?!
-
Just learnin ordered mine with a high grip.and id like see somme pics of that also.rich, i struggled for a year on what bow to get and i looked at everything .funny, ive never really had a heroe type person in my life but after reading the tributes to paul schafer im pretty close .i then started looking at the tips and it pretty much made up my mind.ive never shot one before(which is scary to me)then you find a thread like this and it puts my mind at ease.
-
well said, Keith.
I'm beyond the hero worship stuff, myself, but reading about Schafer sure makes me wish I knew him.
Naturally, all of us would like to know your thoughts on the bow, when you get it!
Best wishes,
Rich
-
Hi Keith;
I get my fastflite strings fron james Vanover in Fenton Michigan Phone #810 629 8763, I'm real fussy on the number of twists per inch and my upper and lower loop sizes! James has been very accomodating to me. For my none fastlite 'Tips ,I make my own strings, with the same material (white linen) that Jack Howard made his strings from, I call them " Silent Flite " ).
-
Thanks guys mom and Emily are doing fine! It's been a while since I've done dirty diapers(our son is 17) but you don't forget!
Beth saw saw this thread and emailed me thier congrats!
My Silvertip experience was about the same as SteveO's. From the first day I shot it more consistantly than anything I have ever shot and I've had a bunch. Silvertips just feel right to me. This thread has me wanting another one but I have no idea what I would order! I am going to play with a rest and vanes.
-
Sergio,
It is a very small world. I am a good friend of James Vanover! I have thoughts of taking over his string business when he "retires". James also makes a VERY sweet 3pc. longbow, the JVOutback. Only friends or folks who come over and have James fit the bow to them have a JVO.
I have a beauty JVO in all Osage :goldtooth: .
-
Hey Steve; What a coincidence ! i've never met james , however he seems like a very nice person and was extremely accomodating with me , i'm very particular, about my bow strings.
If you don't mind , please pm. me you phone # and address, as i'm now retired and coming down to Michigan very shortly to see some old friends. I could fire a warning shot and maybe meet for lunch or coffee.
-
All this interest now, I hope it doesn't extend the waiting time for a new Silvertip! I'm trying to get the ordering time right so that I get mine for my 50th birthday. It's a apresent to myself.
It's great to hear about everybody and their Silvertips. I hope it gets Dave more business.
But not too much to make the wait any longer!!!
Now I have to decide which features to order. Still stuck on the camo limbs! Probably checkering too. Not sure about fastflight. Decisions, decisions.......
Lee
-
Lee, I would order with the FF option. That way you can shot either string type and then decide which you favor.
-
My Silvertip should be done sometime in the next month or so. Bloodwood riser with zebrawood stripe and tulipwood veneers with antler knobs and tips. I'm just finishing my arrow building bench and hope to have a dozen CX Heritage shafts all painted up and ready to go by the time the bow arrives.
-
hey sergio can you explain to me what you like in strings. you mentioned # of strands and length of loop.what is the reasons? thanks keith
-
Hi keith; i do not like a string with too many twists, I like about one twist per inch, any more and I feel that the string acts like a spring is noisier , slows the bow, is less consistant.Just look at the FITA shooters they use endless loop strings. Jack harrison Studied this a lot and supplied endless loop strings with his Bows! I like larger loops than most strings have so they sit in the ' V " part of the Silvertip limb string groove better. james has my measurements for all this.
-
Lee,
When I was out at the shop, Dave had some Treebark camo limbs :D
-
Steve O.
Thanks! Trebark was my all time favorite camo, in fact I still have a sweatshirt that must be 16 years old or more that I refuse to get rid of!
I also undrstand that Jim Crumly, the designer of Trebark, is bringing back the original disign again.
So far, my order will be camo limbs, checkered grip, fastflight option. Man, I better start saving my pennies!!!!!!
Glad I don't turn 50 till May 2008. If I want it by then, I plan on ordering it this July.
Lee

Jeff,
The riser is rosewood but what wood is the wave and the the limbs?
Thanks,
JD
-
keith, no but Dave did some testing and the Fast Flight, 60#@28" with a 540 grain arrow went 195fps while the Dacron was 187fps.
-
The difference is noticable. I have shot both on my FF bow and you can see the difference.
-
Lee;
That old Tree bark is my favorite Hardwood hunting Camo. On the ground i think ASAT is the best.
-
Mike it is not that noisy. I can tell a slight difference but it is quite as some longbows. Silencer placement makes a big difference.
I agree with the original Treeback as a great camo. I have a Cabelas' outfitter fleece jacket that will be 18 years old this season and I'm not about to give it up!
-
To keep in line with the thread, has anyone shot or does anyone own one of Dave's Silvertip longbows? I have a recurve already, and was also throwing his longbow in the mix for a new bow.
I'd like opinions before I decide on another recurve, or go with the longbow. Any input would be appreciated.
Lee
-
Lee, You might want to talk with Scott Dillon (Carcajou). I believe he has owned several of Dave's longbows as well as his recurves. I think he even has one listed in the classifieds here.
Fred
-
Lee- I bought a slightly used Silvertip longbow in pristine condition in the spring of '05 and shot a deer with it that fall. I found the Silvertip very easy to shoot, but my hand doesn't agree with the grip very well, so I switched back to recurves for hunting purposes. The silvertip longbows are extremely good looking, and I found it very easy to switch between the longbow and my Marriah recurve.
-
Keith, you don't need no stinkin' stats man :D the only reason to get the dacron model is if you want an exotic riser. Dave put some catwhiskers on my string and I added a bit of bowhush and my FF is plenty quiet for me.
Lee, I shot a few longbows out there too. They were VERY nice. The grip is "longbowy" though. I am way too accustomed to the Shrew grip to change. Maybe someday I will try to talk Dave into making one like it.
-
64" 70lbs at 29" draw
Billy
-
Is non ff smoother than ff to draw??
-
No, but it does feel a little different as the shot is off.
-
I shoot a 60" 54#@27" dacron model. Walnut dymondwood riser, antler tips, prairie rattler skinned dymondwood limbs, checkered grip.
-
Lee~
The Silvertip longbows are great longbows. they are FF compatible off the shelf.Very quick, and dead-in-the-hand. They handle heavy arrows well, and are very quiet when braced properly. the grip is the same as the Silvertip recurve. One of the nicest longbows out there. My current honey is a 64", 53@28" Yew/cocobolo, checkered grip with polished sheep tips. You cant go wrong!
Mike~
I draw a 27" arrow, and find that the 60" bow is very stable, and forgiving....Dacron or FF doesnt matter to me...my favorite is my bocote risered, stained quilted maple limbed, checkered,Antler burred, sheephorned tipped, beauty, called.."Bucks Doom"..with a back up set of camo limbs for hunting..56@28"....
You wont find a finer longbow or recurve out there, and service is excellent! Buy one TODAY! :D
-
lol steve i know never been much of a stat man myself.just looking for something to chew on during the wait.i did go with the ff option walnut diamond wood and curly maple limbs
-
I shoot a 58" 53#@27" dacron tip. Charcoal Dymondwood riser with yew stripe, checkered grip, yew limbs with antler tips and TD knobs.
-
JD,
I don't know what wood Dave used in the rosewood riser wave; the back of the set of limbs without the skins is Russian olive, and the belly (not shown) is red elm. For limbs with skins I just have Dave stain the actionwood on the belly side to match the riser. I've done this for my walnut as well as rosewood bow, and the actionwood actually looks pretty good.
-
Both of my ST recurves are 62". I have limbs ranging from 63-66# at my draw length of 29.75". I shoot POC arrows 30.5" long and spined at 90-94#. On occasion I shoot 2315 aluminums.
-
Mine is 62"long and 71lbs @30" Pics are on page 12 of this thread.I have one on order that will be 60"
I shoot 2315's and am trying to get some Grizzlysticks tuned up for it.
-
My hunter for the last 2 seasons "Ole Death" is a bocote riser, zebra wood limbs dacron model. 62" 59@29.
The new fastflight bow is rosewood DW riser, kingwood veneers over actionboo. 62" 63@29. It doesn't have a name yet.
-
I am looking into a 60 inch bow for a 29 inch draw. Does that sound too short for you guys?
I was thinking about the 58 inch riser with the long limbs. Does anyone have experience with that combo? How does it compare to the normal 60 inch bow? Smoother? Speed?
Just trying to cover all my bases before I spend a whole lotta $$$ for a new bow.
Brett
Hunting tip: Don't forget your socks when hunting in plain rubber boots in 36 degree weather.
-
I would go 62, smoother, more forgiving, no problems with finger pinch. I have a 29" draw and alot of 60 and under bows have finger pinch to me.
-
My Silvertip is 58", 58# at 27 inches. I used to shoot 2016 aluminums, now I shoot Beman Max 4 400's with 145 Magnus heads. SWEET!!!!!!
Lee
-
My latest Silvertip is 60" long and 52# @ 28" FF with Rosewood riser and Camphor Burl limb veneers-Purty. My hunting tip that I have had for a whhile is also 60" bow and is 56#@28". Walnut riser ,FF and has camo limbs. Bothe bows have checkered grips and sheep tips. :)
-
Mike~
A 60" bow would be fine for you, the 62" would be even better, it all boils down to personal preference. The good thing about Silvertips is the smoothness of draw. You'll be amazed.....
-
carcojou,i ordered the 58" because of my short draw of 26" am i going loose the smoothness of draw.i went with daves recomendations in his brochure.
-
Keith; You will be more than happy with your 58" Silvertip!! Good choice. I shot with a 65# 58" 'Tip for a long time and I draw 29".
-
What takedown system is Dave using on his longbow?
-
WEll Guys you have definatly pushed me over the edge and am going to have to oder one. I have allways loved the look of those bows but never been able to pay that much money. But hay i think i will just have to do a little bit more work here and there and just save up for it. As i am sure i will be able to motivate my self to work if that is what i am working for.
But i dont really understand about the FF option. Where is it different to make it faster. If any one could shefd any light on that for me. And why dont they do FF with exotic woods.
-
Ow sorry just one other thing, i noticed a lot of people shoot carbon or aluminum arrows from there silver tips. Is there any reason except personal prefference as i would be sticking to the traditional POC if i get one.
Manny Thanks
-
i have one of dave's longbows too....53# @26.5 inches. charcoal dymond wood w/ kudu tips/overlays and bacote veneers, REAL sweet and shoots extremely well. performs w/ the curve and very quiet. i use dacron on all my tips (they are all built for FF) and they still fling a mean arrow!!! i think dave's LB's are one of the best kept secrets out there.
-
Trad Man, I think I can answer part of your question...The Fast Flight is going to be able to accept a Fast Flight string, adding speed, as well as have a reinforced riser (I think). I thought they did do FF with exotic woods (???). As far as arrows, that's preference. It's the kind of stuff Paul Schafer used (he shot aluminum) and that makes me feel good...kinda have a feeling he'd shoot carbon today :)
-
The FF option consists of 2 extra accent stripes in the riser and the limb tips are built up thicker than the dacron Silvertips.
Dave prefers to use Dymondwood risers for his FF bows and offers a standard 1 year full and 2 year prorated warantee on them.
Contrary to what the website states Dave will make a FF riser out of exotic woods BUT he will NOT warantee the bow.
-
Just got in a Silvertip TD for try-out. I will try to post some pics if I can. Plan to shoot it some over the weekend and compare it to my Chastain Recurve.
See if this works...

Brett
-
Ghostman, I think Dave will waranty the limbs but not the riser on an exotic FF.
The FF strings do not stretch and put more energy into the arrow. It is also tough on the bow. The upside is a little more speed and less shock on release. The downside is it rougher on the bow and strings or string material cost a little more.
-
Brett, is that a FF Silvertip?
-
A4C,
Yes, it is FF. 60 inches. 52# @ 28 inches.
It draws smooth, but I could not learn much shooting it at 7 yards in my garage. I will take it out to the target range and stretch its legs on Saturday.
Does anyone have experience with the 60 inch bow that is the 58 inch riser with the long limbs? Just curious how it would compare to the normal 60 inch combination.
Brett
-
SERGIO what kind of elevated rest does dave use ?
-
Keith--I'm pretty sure Dave uses the Bear Weather Rest
-
Brett;
Thats a beautiful looking Bow!! Please let us know how it shoots for you once you've had time to put it thru it's paces!?
Keith; I also believe that Dave uses a Bear weather rest. However I stand corrected on the arrow size he uses, i thought that he uses 2018's, but he corrected me the other day and it's 2020's.
-
More tip pics please ! :bigsmyl:
-
Shot the Demo Bow at the range today. It is blistering fast compared to other bows I have shot, but it does seem pretty loud to me. I was shooting 600 grain 2117's out of what was probably 55lb draw. Arrow flight was good (not perfect), but the noise factor distracted me a bit. Wish I had a chronograph, but for now I will just say that the arrow speed is "very fast" according to my speed checker (eyeballs).
The grip is not checkered, but it still feels very good. I would opt for a high wrist if I order one, but that is just my preference.
The finish and worksmanship of this bow are better than any other I have seen, and I have seen a lot. I cannot get over how heavy that dymondwood is. Makes for a very stable shooting bow.
Tomorrow I plan to shoot a 3-D round with it.

Brett, is the bow silenced at all?
-
Brett, What is the brace height set at?
-
The brace height is 7 1/4 inches and the sting only has one small set of rubber silencers, about 8 inches from the serving on both ends.
Do you guys like woolie whispers, that is what I use on my other bows.
This one just has the sting the way it was set up when I got it.
Brett
-
sergio is thatquilted maple on the limbs?
-
Brett, try 7.5 BH. I use a tarntula type fleece silencer I cut from old fleece. I put them about 13" from each tip and it dead quite.
-
Brett, the best silencer (by a LONG shot) I've used (I've tried woolie whispers, string leeches, cat whiskers) is the Qivuit musk ox ones from 3rivers.
-
Brett, I think the BH is too low. If memory serves me Dave recommends 7 1/2 to 7 3/4. I shoot my "tip" at 8" with Bow Hush approx 12" from the string loops and its is "dead" quiet. Fred
-
I shoot my Silvertip at 7 3/4 and seems to quiet it down pretty well. I just use the basic cheap rubber cat whiskers, and don't have a noise problem.
Lee
-
at 25 pages I cant remember if I posted here or not :)
I've shot a lot of bows, buying, selling and trading. I've had a Silvertip and a non-FF one too, and the one FF I had was a shooting Son of a Gun, best shooting recurve in my hands I've ever had I think.
I'll have another some day too
-
Set your brace height at 8"...its the sweet spot. You should have NO noise when silenced and braced correctly...just a subtle "THUUMP"...then it's LIGHTS OUT! :bigsmyl:
-
Put the brace up to 7 5/8 and that seemed to help a bit. I had some other shooters stand beside me when I shot, and they said it didn't sound noisy to them. Maybe its just me.
Shot a decent 3d round considering my form, mechanics, and concentration were all in the toilet. The Silvertip shoots a quick arrow with a lot of authority.
I have decided to order one. Now if I could just decide what options to get......
Brett
-
I like the 60 inch bow, and I am drawing 29 inches smoothly. Is there any reason I should order 62 inch instead?
This bow seemed like a rocket launcher at 55 lbs. I cannot imagine what a 70+ lb silvertip could do!
Thanks for all the help on this thread.
Brett
-
Brett, Dave told me that he recommends 60" for a draw length 29" or less and 62" for over 29".
-
I use Mountain Muffler 12-strand strings on my FF ST. Quiets it very well. I too have had others tell me my bow was actually pretty quiet when I mentioned that I thought it was a bit loud. Dave recommended 7 1/2" to 7 3/4" brace when I boughht my first ST in '99. My latest ST delivered a couple weeks ago (same length [62"] and poundage)came with instructions recommending 7 1/4 to 7 1/2. My sweet spot on the first bow is half way in between, but shoots well at low and high end of recommended brace height. Haven't worked it out for the new bow yet.
-
Everything's finalized on my bow. It's actually going to be 60#@29" (I draw 29.5"). can't wait!
-
Ah ... can I mention my request for MORE PICS again ? !
;) Thanks. I'm not a big takedown fan but these Silvertips sure look nice....and the thread was getting a little stale at almost 1hr since last post.
-

-
Man, That Black Dymond beauty with the snakeskins, just "breathes" death and destruction!
The best thing about Silvertips is, that your bow can be designed from your wildest dreams, and 99 out of 100, Dave will make it happen!
Hey Sergio, keep those pics coming! :D
-
If anyone has picture of a Silvertip Takedown longbow that would be cool to.

Keith, sorry, those bows aren't mine. Wish they were though! They're pics Beth had sent to help me pick limb venners. I went with Red Elm. My bow should be here around July/August or so.
-
I need in on this support group. Ordered a new pair of camo limbs yesterday.
-
Dang, that black diamond with the skins is one of the most striking bows I have ever seen!!!
Silvertip aficianado as well......
-
larry t my bow is due to arive in august sometime aprox 201 days!
sergio i remember in one of your threads you said you had a tip that you hadnt shot yet, was there a reason. at the time i thought you were crazy but after all these pics some of these bows you could just look at and be happy
-
For those of you waiting for a Silvertip. Good news the wait does end. Mine is due to arrive tomorrow. Charcoal riser w/flatgrain zebrawood veneers on limbs. I do however see an extra set of limbs in the future after seeing the black diamondwood and snakeskins. I also check this thread every day.
-
Jim wheres the pics man?did ya get it?

I am picking it up today at the Post Office. I will try and post pictures this afternoon. Here is a pic of one that I sold recently to a gentleman in KY

-
JIM your self discipline is amazing!id take off work and be waiting in the parking lot when they opened the doors.why did you sell your other one?
-
I wanted a Asbell grip on the bow. THe above one has a medium grip.
-
here is a picture of the new bow I got today
(http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s299/RocoleJ/P2020004.jpg)

That is BEAUTIFUL!
Are they real antler knobs?
I love that charcoal riser.
Brett
-
Bet i know what you will be doing the rest of the day.let us know how she shoots
-
They are the cast resin knobs. I just got back in from shooting it and she screams. I set the brace hgt at 7 3/4" and was shooting a 2216 Easton shaft. I will get string silencers on it this afternoon, she's a little loud right now. I have a feeling the whitetail in the area are in big trouble. I think the charcoal riser looks elegant. The picture does not do the flatgrain zebrawood justice on the limbs. I initially thought that they would come out lighter but am ecstatic that they have that hint of darkness. The bad thing about this thread is I am already considering ordering another Tip w/charcoal riser but with snakeskin limbs.

Schafer Silvertip Bows are now a sponsor of Trad Gang.

Here is a better pic of the demo Silvertip that I shot last week. Is it common to shoot heavy spines with a 'tip? This one shot 2117's great at about 55lbs. What do you experts think?
Mine will be a charcoal riser with a rosewood stripe and rosewood limbs. Just ordered it a few days ago.

-
what weight point are you using?
-
I was shooting 200gr field points. What about a 2018 for a 53lb silvertip? Shafts would be 30 inches and points would be 150-200 grains.
Brett
-
This thread should win some kind of award!
And, welcome, Dave and Beth!
-
A 2018 is what Dave recommends for 54#-59# bow with a 125 gr. head and 28" draw. 59#-64# = 2117
64#-70# = 2117 or 2216. for every in you increase over a 28" draw go up one arrow spine.
my bow is a 56# @28" and I am shootin a 2216 with a 175 gr. head. This combo gives me tremendous arrow flight.
-
Is string length 3" shorter than bow length on the 'tips?
-
Always enjoy looking at everyone's bows. Here's mine, bocote and zebrawood limbs.

Welcome aboard! :wavey:
Lets keep this thread rollin, on the best bows made in the country! PERIOD.

This has to be the longest thread in the history of TG or pretty darn close to it,LOL.

Blackdog: Thanks for posting those photos. THAT is the combo I love!! (of course, they are all gorgeous)
-
damn sweet bows all of them!

Sorry this took so long. I took a few photos of my and my son's Schafer's. There's also a photo of my extra set of limbs which are Russian Olive with Kudu tips.

Tim, Great looking bows....Those Russian Olive limbs are awesome looking!!!!!
-
Oh, Tim, my man, exactly how MANY whitetails has that Silvertip of yours accounted for this past season??
I hear that there isnt enough room for any more notches on the lower limb!!!!!!
-
Hello Scott...
I'm fortunate to have a very full freezer, which is important with a 15 year old boy in the house...damn this boy eats. I had a real nice year and I must say it helps to live in an area with very liberal tag limits.
My son didn't offer much help this season due to high school and lacrosse committments so I had to convince my wife I needed to spend twice as much time in the woods!!!! It worked!!!!
Here's a photo of our last outing a few weeks back. I must have seen 50 deer that day! My son almost filled a doe tag, they just needed to come 5 more yards and he would have been comfortable with the shot.
Notice the bow in his hand!

-
that one piece tip is fine!!!
-
Thanks guys! I can tell you that the pics dont do the bow justice, in person its unreal.
-
Ok guys.......
I thought I would add this post to this thread as it seems it should be shared with everyone here on the boards. I have posted a link below to a gallery that I made to show what I consider to be a very unique and unusual Schafer bow. In the gallery you can see that this particular bow was actually built by Paul as he explains in the letter that was hand signed by himself. The bow somehow or another made it back to Dave and it is my understanding that he skinned the limbs. I think that is really neat as it means that this bow was not only made by Paul but was also worked on by Dave. As you can see in the images the bow is flawless and it is hard to tell if it was ever really even shot. It is also signed by Paul in his usual fashion on the riser and is tapped for a Kwikee Quiver on an angle as so many of his bows were. I have some additional paperwork and correspondence that was made by Paul that goes along with the letter. I find this bow to be a very interesting part of his history and legend. I hope you guys enjoy the pictures.
Tim

Tim was Martin the company contracted to do the Silver Ghost?
That is neat part of Schafer legacy. No compromise on quality!
-
I believe it was Damon Howatt at the time.........
Shows what a class guy Paul was as he never mentions a name.
Tim ;-)
-
i am trying to post a pic of my silvertip but can't yet.. :^(
tim, those russian olive veneers are AWESOME.
if i keep checkin this thread i'm gonna break down and order another one for sure! ugh! why am i so weak??

love this thread, keep the photos coming.

My first trad bow was a silvertip. At the time it was too much weight for me and i sold it to buy something lighter. I sure wish i could find that bow now. I would spend whatever it took to get it back. Here are the only pics(low quality) i have of it.

limbow: what's that wood on your bow? (what type?)
That is beautiful.
-
who shoots woodies with there silver tip.also has the riser changed over the years some look slimmer than others.
-
I shoot POC's out of my 70# Silvertip.................
I might be mistaken but I think Dave has slimmed the riser down a bit.
Tim ;-)
-
tHOSE RUSSIAN OLIVE LIMBS ARE AMAZING.
THE MORE I SEE THE BLACK RISER WITH SNAKESKINS THE MORE I THINK MY WALLET IS GOING TO GET LIGHTER.
-
The riser is Rosewood with a camphor burl accent stripe and the limb veneers are also camphor burl. Thanks !!! It shoots better than it looks-hard to beleive :)
-
My riser on this bow is smaller by 1 1/2 almost 2 from my other Silvertip. Still heavy in the hands. I like the slimmer look.
-
Chad, are you a toe- nail BITER??????????? Look at that big toe would you! Looks like a snappin' turtle head!!!! :biglaugh:
-
Keith,
I shoot tapered POC arrows from my ST recurve with 63 or 64# limbs at my draw of 29.75". Shafts are 90-94# from Rogue River, 30.5" BOP. I have some footed barrel-tapered hexspine shafts that I got from Bob Burton that I am going to try - finished weight should be about 775 gr with a 125 gr BH. My POCs average about 615 gr.
-
I cant get my downpayment saved fast enough this thread is killing me.
-
KNOW what you mean budog if i was saving it by myself it would have taken for ever.my wife gave me the down payment for christmas ,god love her!now its just the wait!
-
I am waiting on one at this time, and as Budog said, "this thread is killing me"
Later
J
-
j-dog sent you a pm
-
Don't feel bad Budog I have 2 of them and thought I was good for a few years and this thread has me wanting another.
Guys how does a FF Charcoal riser with osage stripe, shedua veneers with antler tips and checkered grip sound?!!!
-
Ray, Thats why they call it a big toe! :D I swear i don't have to take this abuse!
-
Mine should be ready any day now.
OK, I'll tell my Silvertip story and solicit suggestions. My original Silvertip circa 91 broke in the handle around 95. Dave made a new one, a great job but it was no longer a Paul original. Then years later the limbs delaminated. So now my silvertip in 100% Windauer. Not a problem it's a great bow and I just killed a 7 point with it 3 weeks ago. But the sentimental guy in me,saved the old Paul Schafer limbs---Question-should I save and display them, discard them or offer them up to the fire pit as sort of a ceremonial letting go. Thoughts?
-
I would display it. It is a great piece of history.
-
alligatordond, I still have my original Schafer...the handle is in great shape but I can see where the limbs are cracked and showing water damage at the fade-outs...it still shoots but I know it's only a matter of time! Once they split, I'd like to use the remnants to make some knife handles and maybe some tip overlays for another Silvertip...hard to display a bow that was made for the Timber!!!
-
Alligatordond: SAVE THEM, you have a part of a legend in your hands. (IMO)
-
Yeah, Think I'll save them. I forgot to add that the tip overlays are dall sheep horn Paul said he found that was a winter kill.I do like Bob's idea of knife handles or new overlays. Maybe a bow rack for the OTHER Silvertip's. You know , my Silvertips are like mistress's- I can't let my wife find out about them. Do you have any idea what a new Silvertip costs in Carats???
-
i kinda agree with bob make a knife so it can still go afield
-
bob sent you a pm
-
anyone explain why this thread keeps decreasing??
Strange
J
-
maybe resizing photos?
-
Not to prolong this thread, or to veer from the topic, but if any of you Silvertip shooters are going to Baltimore's Treaditional Classic in May, we all ought to get together and get a "Team Silvertip" picture taken, and send it to Dave and Beth. I will provide the camera and have the picture taken and enlarged, and send to them and any of us who want one.
Let me know if anyone is game for this!
Lee :campfire:
-
GREAT idea lee ,ill be there but my tip doesnt come till august
-
After a search I found this thread. I've just finished reading every post. I enjoyed the testimonials and of course the pictures that were still viewable. I have a ST due in April, 2011. I haven't settled on all the woods but I know I want FF, 58", LH, 46# @ 26", antler treatments, checkered grip, and medium grip. I'm hoping Beth and Dave come up with some highly figured Macassar to "flare" a rosewood dymonwood riser with stained, quilted limb veneers. Although those Camphor burl limbs on this thread sure look good.
A Trad Ganger has sent me one of his Schafers to tide me over while I wait. When I'm not traveling I shoot that loaner multiple times daily. Thanks Billy
-
This is 60" and 51 @ 28", and FF compatible
(http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q291/bjornweb/Schafers/IMG_1995_2-1.jpg)
The tips are Moose and the woods are RSW riser and Camphor burl on the limb faces. Bow is smooth, quiet and fast.
This is the 2010 PBS lottery bow I won.
-
Bjorn,
That is a stunningly nice combo of riser woods! How fortunate you are...
KD
-
Awesome bows! I personaly have not owned any with the FF option, but have owned originals and some made by Dave and there may be bows out there as good but not better. IMO
-
Bjorn,
Yep, your bow was the one I referred to. Very nice. Are those LB limbs?
-
This is a very addicting thread.
-
What Felix said :)
-
"Bjorn,
Yep, your bow was the one I referred to. Very nice. Are those LB limbs?"
Thank you Kevin and Bowwild. Yes those are LB limbs. Dave dyed the Camphor to match the RSWD and added checkering-he is a true artisan and craftsman.
-
Okay...I have a confession to make.
I watch threads like this for fine bows...especially Silvertips. When someone like Bjorn or Felix posts a bow pic, if I like it I copy and paste it into a file. I have umm... a lot of bow pics in my files! I go to these and compare woods...layouts...overlays...stains...everything when I'm considering a new bow. I don't ever copy a bow, but I have used my files to come up with some great ideas. It's my version of a bow library!
-
Kevin,I did the same before ordering my Tips,it was inspiring looking at yours.I'll post the pics of mines when they would be ready.I think pretty soon.
-
Heres mine. Really shoots an arrow! I do shoot heavy arrows 750 gr., and the bow really handles that well.

Felix, I have a one piece Silvertip that is almost completed and about to ship. We can compare!
Kevin
-
For sure Kevin!I need to call Beth when they will be ready, she told me sometime after Christmas,I made my self a nice present.
-
I'm looking forward to seeing your new bows, Kevin and Felix!

51 @ 28 and a super shooter.
-
oh my bjorn, that's one of the nicest longbows i've seen! what are the wood combo's??
-
Thank you md126.
RSWD limb veneers and Dymondwood riser dyed to match. I didn't checker the grip-the riser is small and the finish is not slippery.
-
Bjorn, nice looking bow. I like the color of it. I was wondering why it wasn't checkered until I saw your post. I kinda wish Dave's limb tips were a little more pointed.
-
I have owned 4 Tips. I loved them all and hunt exclusively with a 2008 TD Recurve that I lovingly call Rosie because of the Rosewood riser and limbs. I have killed 4 deer with this latest tip and it is a rocket.
-
(http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk223/emtp505/2010bucks045.jpg)
Walnut riser, Bocote veneers, antler tips and knobs.
First Tip ever and I am done looking for "MY" bow. Best bow I have ever had i my hand.
-
Thanks for the RSWD pictures Bjorn! I like a dark bow with highly figured grain. I'm thinking now about RSWD with Coco flares in the riser and two sets of limbs; RSWD and Coco veneered. Or, I wonder if a set of limbs backed with RSWD and Faced with Coco would look like (or vice-versa). I feel like I have to have RSWD in the riser because I want FF and I'm having the bow drilled for a plunger-style springy rest.
-
I currently own two Tips myself. A one piece, and a takedown. I talked to Beth awhile back about another one piece, maybe I will have to get something going.
I guess I have that Silvertip bug!
-
Here is a picture of one of the nicest looking schafers I have seen .

Here is another of same bow:

Wowser! Nice buck Robert! The pretty bow just compliments him more.
Jack, gorgeous bow! I just can't imagine having that bow in my hand, but then...I'm right-handed! btw: Scott Depot is Putnam County right? I could almost lob an arrow down to you from my southern Ohio home.
Felix and others: Just got confirmation my one-piece bow is en-route. I've got pics of it, but I'll take my own and post them sometime next week. I'm a little giddy right now....
-
Can't wait to see that one piece Kevin!
-
not to sound more stupid than I already do, but what is RSWD ?
-
RSWD = Rosewood
But correct me if I'm wrong.
-
Jack,
Yep, that bow of yours is a doozy!
-
You Tip folks have big right to be proud!! All beauts! Love the one piece LB like Bjorn's. That's coming from a Hill nut. BTW, why so many vacant boxes where pix should be?
-
Great Kevin, you are waiting for a nice Christmas gift, for sure.I am sure your will have some bells!!!!
-
I have just seen the name of the original owner of that lefty beauty,I am sure he will miss it!!!
-
Don't worry Felix...I missed that beauty before I even boxed it up and sent it to Jack!! Don't know what I was thinking..... :banghead: :banghead:
Take good care of her Jack..
-
Hey Allen you could shoot mine next year when I'll be in WV.
-
Felix whena re you going to be in WV ?
-
Jack,I'll be in 2011 around Nov the first, immagine for what bro?LOL.I have one of my best friend that lives in Wheeling, been there quite a few times. He is been past president of the PBS,maybe you know him.
-
Felix,
Are his initials Tim Reed?
:D
-
You are right Kevin,Tim and Fred are good friends of mine.
-
Very cool. Enjoy WV! I live an hour away from this fine state. You MUST avoid Cabela's while in Wheeling. ;-)
-
Kevin,it is the first place where i stop as I arrive, you know that Tim lives 3 air miles from that store and from some of his stands you can see the Cabela's tower lights. We need to meet when I'll be there.
-
That sounds like a very enjoyable day. Please keep me reminded!
-
You bet.
-
I learned from reading this thread it is possible to get lucky and buy limbs that missed the buyer's poundage and save some build time. If they have such limbs they can do a "riser only" build in 4 months. I called. Close but no cigar. One pair was 2" longer and the just right length pair was a little hot for me (3#'s heavy).
Looks I'll have two reasons to look forward to celebrate around Easter time.
-
Yes Felix I know them both ,but know Fred the best . Good luck in November :)
-
I look forward to next Nov, Felix.
Jack, you you come on up with us as well.
-
Jack,Fred has something that I want really bad but he doesn't want to let it go.
I really hope to meet you all guys.
-
-
And the thread that will not die, alot of great info in this thread for Silvertip cult members.
-
I can now confess:
I've never owned a 3 piece TD longbow, always preferring the 2 piece designs. After much time and consideration...not to mention looking at a truckload of various 3 pc longbows...I'm awaiting delivery on a sparkling new Silvertip TD Longbow. I've had this one on the drawing board for nearly 2 years, and I'm looking forward to seeing it in my hands.
-
New Silvertips are FUN!! :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:
I checked in with the Windauers about a week and a hakf ago to see if they had any lefties in stock that needed a good home. They just happened to have a slightly used set of limbs that were to my specs exactly (52@28). Beth said they were just getting ready to build a new riser to go with them so they could sell it.
I must be living right....one quick phone call to Beth sealed the deal. Dave was going to start my riser last week, and I should have it within the next 2 or 3 weeks!
I feel like I hit the lotto! :archer: :jumper: :jumper:
-
Good for you Allen, you should go by a lotto ticket!!
And what will the woods be?? Checkered grip, of course?
My new limbs are due in a month or so, I can't wait :goldtooth:
-
I agree with Mike , theres something not quite right here? :dunno: Lets lynch him with a bowstring and Mike can have his Silvertip ! :thumbsup:LOL
-
Mike...
Hints are always fun! Start with some of the finest riser wood stock I've seen. Next, bring on the most unique limb veneers I've seen in a lifetime of custom bows. Add just the right kind of carving for a true hunting bow. Finish it with plenty of beautiful bone.
I hope it all comes together as nicely as my mind has it pictured...I will be more than pleased!
-

The bad news,it would have been better for you to take a look at my twins that will be delivered just after yours!
I have still nightmares about Kevin's next bow, what kind of woods and carving!?
Kevin as a good friend you have to send me at least aPM with your project.LOL
-
You guys make me laugh! :)
Nothing like having a good bow in the pipeline, is there? The name of this game is called...
"What can I do to top THAT?"
They're all such good and sweet bows, it's just fun to mentally craft a new one. I get a rush out of picking woods and evaluating the possible combinations. I was in no hurry on this bow, and the Windauers were more than willing to really stretch for me this time. I even named this bow; something I only do for certain bows which inspire me.
Felix...I could waste your time trying to describe the bow, but then it might not turn out just like I envision. You've been such a good friend, and inspired me many times...here's a promise: When the bow arrives I will grace YOU with the first images of it. I'll make them detailed shots and you can critique it for me. Hold nothing back and tell me what you think. Deal?
-
OK Kevin, but I want to give you a preview:B&W the name of 2 coming my way!??
-
Cool thread! I joined the club a few weeks ago when this one showed up in the classifieds. Now I know what all the fuss is about! 62" cocobolo with ebony stripe and zebra limb veneers. Checkered grip, antler knobs, overlay, and tips. Great shooting bow.
-
Kevin, it sounds like your new 'Tip will be something special...especially if it's anything like some of your others that I have seen!
The limbs that I'm getting are Zebrawood with sheep horn tips. Below is a pic that Beth had posted in the classifieds a while back.
I have always wanted a charcoal dymondwood riser, so I'm going with that and doing the riser stripe in walnut dymondwood.
Checkered grip is a given... :saywhat:
I still feel a little guilty for getting it this quickly....just a little... :jumper:
Felix, I look forward to seeing your new "Twins"...as usualy.
-
Felix...
I heard just a little about your bows, I think. I'm happy for you again. I'm really looking forward to seeing some pictures and learning about them.
Allen, I wouldn't feel a tiny bit guilty in your shoes! I once bought a Robertson bow that way many, many years back. I liked it so much that I still have it and still hunt with it. You just never know when luck is going to fall in your lap.
-
Gonna be a beauty Allen :notworthy:
-
Allen, charcoal looks good with those nice Zebra!

That's just what I was thinking Felix!
-
I have two Silvertips. The first is a bocote riser with zebra wood limbs. The other is a rosewood diamonwood riser with matching limbs, checkered grip and is FF. I have been so completely satisfied with these Tips I don't know what I could do different. I have thought of ordering another one more than a few times but I just don't feel like I can improve on the two I have................they are perfect.
-
Just figured it might be fun to dangle the carrot a little....
My latest Silvertip is completely finished and on its way. This is my first (probably only) 3 piece td longbow. I've got it customed just about as much as I dare...any more and a bow just gets too dressed-up to step outside. I like bows with warm woods and beautifully rugged trim...that's what this bow is all about. I usually order some kind of custom knobs for my td bows, but the longbow just seems to 'flow' a bit better without those chunky knobs. I went with brass bezels, but I have an idea. A friend of mine does custom engraving on primitive flintlock and percussion rifles. I'm going to ask him to engrave the bezels with some good design...not real dressy again...just enough to catch the eye a little.
In any event, I spoke to Dave and told him to just hold the new bow and ship it next Monday. I figure that's better than having it sit in the USMail system over the weekend. I'm in no hurry.
When it gets here, I'll shoot some decent pics for everyone. I also have to hunt down the ideal quiver for it, too.
-
Ah come on Kevin...you are gonna make me get my name on that list again! :saywhat:
Can't wait to see her!! :campfire:
-
I own two Silvertips and love them both. One of them is an original Silvertip 71@28, and I'm shooting that one exclusively now. I always dreamed of being on that list of Dave's. Instead I got the only bow that I can think of that can satisfy that hunger, a bow that Paul built. I'll shoot this bow till I can't pull 71 pounds, but I'm still young so it's going to be awhile. Until then I'll admire all your new Silvertips. :notworthy: :campfire:
-
I have more yesterdays than I do tomorrows, and to that end I'm going to enjoy some of the finest bows ever built by men...in my remaining time. I have a not-so-secret plan that I follow:
I get a bow done, and I get right back on the list! Although not Silvertips, I'm on a couple other 'primo artiste' bowyer's lists. I use the time to scheme up woods, patterns and designs. I really enjoy seeing my ideas come together in a deadly yet artistically beautiful weapon.

Apparently not very long if your first name starts with an 'A'...right Allen?
;)
Seriously: I'm not sure of the exact time. I'd say minimum 10 months and up to 16 possible. The only way to know is email them or call.
[email protected]
I seldom pay attention to the wait time anymore. I figure every day I don't have one on order is another day longer to wait. These extremely customized bows take considerable time to build.

I'm bringing this thread back to the top...
Any of you 'Tip Longbow owners care to compare your 3 piece longbow to a 3 piece recurve 'Tip? Are the grips the same? Obviously they are quiet? How is the draw? How is the cast? Just as 'fast"? Any pictures?
For a hybrid bow, they have some great lines to them. I'm looking at possibly getting one!

Can you get recurve limbs for it as well?
