Title: Hats for shooting trad.
Post by: GMMAT on February 16, 2009, 08:49:00 PM
Are there hats designed so that you can wear them and still shoot (without turning them backwards).

I'm aware of the Bear styles....but I was wondering if there were other offerings.

Thanks.

Any hat that has a soft brim will do.  You can also cut a regular bill down a bit or cut a triangle out of it.  The Wensel brothers just cock it a little to the side.

Think I figured it out.  I ordered a couple soft-brimmed boonies.

Good question.  I have not found a hat/cap yet that I can wear while shooting.  I can't stand to have the brim touch the string.  It distracts me.  It's bad enough that my attention span can be measured with an egg timer and have plenty of sand left over.  I've quit wearing a hat when I'm just shooting or during early seasons, and during the late season cold I wear a stocking type hat with no brim.  Any other option would be great.

For later in the year I bought one of the radar caps at wallyworld. Its fleece with a short brim. I cut the bill down on a baseball hat for using in warmer weather.

That's funny! I just had my cap on backwards to shoot and then put on my Boony right before I sat down and read this!!!

I love the idea of a notched bill for shooting, but I don't know if I could bring myself to mutilate my "lucky ball cap" to make it work.

I need all the luck I can get!

There's a site called Noggin Tops that has great hats for outdoor and hunting use. Check them out.

I buy boonie hats and trim down the brim quite a bit. Ugly as sin, but works great!   :biglaugh:

I know a guy who has a set of small velcro patches glued on the front of his boonie and top of the front brim to hold the brim up away from the string.

Gee, I can shoot with a ball cap on with no problem. Mostly when hunting I wear a dew rag.

As soon as the string touches the brim, I lose concentration. No hat with any kind of brim works for me.

Look @ anyplace that sells welding supplies.  Welder ball caps have a shorter brim and work great for staying out of a strings way.

Gray Wolf Woolens (See Sponsor Listings) has Predator Camo crusher and boonie style hats.  The Wolfskin fabric is fantastic - crushes up great, and sheds rain too!

I also have a selection of shorter brimmed fedora style hats on my Prairie Traditions website (link below) and plan to expand the selections to include other styles as I go.

"Hats, hats and more hats", a quote from my wife. I too have that problem with releasing the string if it hits the hat brim. I have to wear a hat in the summer sun. My head reflects the sun so much it blinds my shooting friends!! I found a bucket type hat that has UV protection from Duluth Trading Co. I bought 3 because it seems if I like something they quit making it.
For cold weather I prefer a stocking hat.

Try a Tilley Hat.  they have a web site. Many styles to choose from.

The "Jones" hat is short brimmed, down in front, up in back. I shoot in it and never touch the
brim with the string. Cabela's has it in camo and orange. Biff

I'll second the Tilly. They have some rather short brimmed hats and carry a lifetime warranty, including lose for the first year or so.

As to the string touching the brim, I use that as a sort of click indicator. If the string doesn't then I know something is wrong with my form. (Except unusually position required shots.)

For cold weather I usually wear an Akubra Banjo Patterson, bought at Noggintops.

I have a Thinsulate "Radar" hat that has knit pull-down ear protection and a knit cover over a plastic bill. I bent the bill over my right eye and the sting clears it just fine. See my Avatar.

I do want to get a Stormy Kromer, though. Too bad they stopped making the bowhunter model.

For cold weather I like the polar fleece beanie. Then any archery cap with a short brim or take some siccors to a camo cap.

I love a boonie hat, have them in everything from mesh to wool.  Only thing I ever wear.  I wish I could find a fleece boonie like Dennis Kamstra (tips from the old-timer) often wears in TBM pics, the one with the fake leopard skin band.  Cheesy, but cool.

when they say 'one size fits all' it doesn't mean you and your buddies have to hunt with your heads together !

I bought a Rocky, "engineer" hat from Dick's sporting goods for 9 bucks before deer season.  It has an elastic band on the inside and a nice short bill just long enough to keep the sun out and just short enough to stay away from the strings on my bows.  I love it, I actuall bought myself two of them later on, but my father has managed to weasel my extra one away from me.

here is the link from Rocky

Yep, works for me. My warm weather hat that I use for bear hunting and early season deer hunting Is cut out, works slick!! During the cold season I just wear a stocking hat.

I can't shoot with one on.  I watched a clip of Byron, "my hero", shooting and the string hits his hat real good, but doesn't affect the arrow flight at all. :knothead:

I like the Stormy Kromer hats.  When I don't want to wear a brimmed Kromer backwards, I wear my BRIMLESS Kromer.  It's just like a regular Kromer except there's no brim whatsoever.

In my opinion, it's a really neat hat.

Warm weather, I wear a short brimmed boonie hat.  Winona Camo floppy or stocking/skull cap when it turns a little chilly.  Wear two floppys or one over a stocking/skull cap when it gets really cold.

boonie hat is good because you can fold it up at any brim. Also you can chuck it in your pocket if you want it off.

I like the short brimmed hats.  A good warm weather one I just found is a youth hat that comes in Darton Youth Bows (compound) that has a short brim.  My warm weather hat has been a Stormy Kromer for a good while now.  I can shoot with baseball caps on frontways as well but I tend to cant my bow past 45 degrees when I shoot so the string moves itself out of the way.

BTW:  I like your cammies Tom ^^^

Ditto on the camo, Tom, Though looks a little too green for the dry grass around them Canberra hills. Where did you get that quiver, I loke the look of it and have been thinking of making one in a similar design.

I wear a boonie hat most of the time. When its hot I wear a bandana under it, kinda nice to pour water on the bandana then put my hat back on...keeps cool.
In cold weather, a thin watchcap fits just right.
I have alot of different boonies though, its kinda whatever I grab on the way out the door or what I find in the truck.
If all else fails, I'll turn my ball cap around backwards.

A fine felt Fedora will work as well now as it did in Fred Bear's days.  The key is THE FELT!  It should be thin and SOFT.  That way it will roll back with the bowstring at full draw.  Borsalino still makes a decent soft felt (I have a Borsalino "Traveler"), BUT, I just bought an Akubra "Bushman" that's the best hat I've ever hunting in bar none.  The head ban is kangaroo and fits snug to the head - windy days are NO problem.  I have a picture of it on my website.  It's the one balancing on an elk antler in my logo. Picture at  www.logsdonstudios.com (http://www.logsdonstudios.com)

Thanks, again, guys.  Great group.

I lot will also depend on your draw length and length of your bow. For example, I have a 60" recurve that I can shoot with a short brim baseball cap (Black Widow cap). Can't get away with it with other bows. My prefered cap though is a Jones cap. I also use baseball cap turned backward. - Can't do the cap to the side thing.  "[dntthnk]"

I wear caps and turn everything backwards when i shoot. I have an old Vietnam style boonie with a super short brim the works pretty well.
But I find I always shoot more confidently when I know the string absolutely cant hit my hat.

I bend a peak like the peak of a roof in my baseball caps and twist slightly to the side plus wearing the front cocked up more stops string contact. I got this style from my grandfather. They would shove there hats in there back pockets for quick storage and it would be bent in the peak style.
