I think there is/was a Traditional Bowhunters club.  I'll ask around.  I think a bunch of guys in Eagle River shoot together.  Base it on some of my memory of the Rick Hinton discussions.

Patrick,

I've tightened my groups up a bit since then! Was shooting in the league, but decided that shooting for score while others were shooting just for fun was not for me!

See you at the range.

I have got back into trad archery after a four year lull. I came from Pennsylvania four years ago and from Fred Bear's old stomping grounds. My wifes maiden name is "Bear". Before I left I sold all my outfits to a friend. Big mistake. I got home from the Public Safety academy helping with the new recruits and the next day my wife woke me and was holding a Bear Grizzly 55#@28".Guess she got tired of me whinning about it and took it upon herself to get me re-started.As for Walter Kookesh I do not know him that well but I do know Sen. Kookesh very well.

They wouldn't do that, Patrick! I think everyone was facinated by your bow. Too bad it broke. I think you are the only one shooting who is ambitious enough to attempt making their own bow. Keep it up!

Well, as I've updated my profile, it seems to have updated my last post as well.  Now I can say I'm FROM Alaska!  Born and raised in Wisconsin through college.  Then spent four years in Portland attending dental school.  Was always working my way toward Alaska and it's now great to be here.  Good thing is I've now changed my user name and password to something that I can remember so now I'll be able to chime in a little more often and tease Steve a bit too!  Steve, does this sound familiar, " GET ME OUT!"

Akbowbender(Chuck),
Where did you get that nice blacktail at by the way. I'm might have to come hunt with you.  Past couple of heavy snows didn't help much here  with the population.

Found this thread searching the archives... Had to unearth it and chime in... I'm 21 years old, lived in Ketchikan the whole time. I'm a locksmith and I run a little archery shop on the side. I love to deer hunt, but I did draw an exceptional mt. goat tag for this fall. So, with a little luck I hope to introduce a nice late season billy to a 190 grizzly. I started shooting a cheapo longbow when I was about 5, and although I went to the wheelie bows for a few frustrating years, now I'm back shooting the longbow full time. I hope to get my act together soon and start building some more lam bows. I want to call them "Stika Blacktail Longbows". Ideally I will build them out of real Alaskan lumber, but I still have a LOT to learn.

I'm in Wrangell. I missed this thread on the first time around; glad you resurrected it.
I'm glad to hear about an archery shop in Ketchikan, especially if for traditional gear. Do you have a website? I get down there now and then, will have to look you up.
I would love to see some bows made from local wood. What woods do you plan to use?

Sorry, no website. If you are ever in Ketchikan and you want to get together or you need something call up Ktn Lock & Key, that's me full time. Through the end of high school I had an archery shop with regular hours, but life gets complicated and I had to close the storefront. Hopefully things will settle down and I'll be able to open up a new shop with a focus on building and retailing longbows, as well as some of the other necessary evils. As for now people that need archery gear seem to be able to seek me out. There was a guy waiting for me to open the lock shop this morning so I could work on his bow, and the same when I came back from lunch. I'm almost always trying to fill orders for arrows or replace somebody's string.

As far as what wood I'm going to use, I am very open to and would like to hear some suggestions. Like I said I have a lot to learn, and I know there is a pretty steep learning curve to building quality archery equipment. My initial thought is that good red cedar would make a beautiful veneer. As far as core wood and riser material I really don't know yet, but learning is half the fun. I expect that it will take  a considerable amount of time before I get it figured out...

Anybody ever shoot Petersburg???

Here in Finland, woods are the same, most of the animals are same species...but here, its legal to shoot small deer, and everything smaller(fox, birds, rabits etc..) its my lifetime dream to get hunting in Alaska! i hope everything goes right, and i make some connections here with fairbanks ppl  :)  and we can make thing work.!

unfortunatly, hunting in alaska for a non resident alient (meaning not a resident of the united states) for big game isnt a go I dont believe.  And I dont know if you can hunt small game or not, will have to do some digging.

Yeah, i know that, you cannot hunt in Finland eather, BUT you can if i own the land, and you buy some permissions...i was wondering, there are plenty of hunting trips where you pay for guide, hunting permission and animal that you wanna shoot...isnt that possible in Alaska.

I think (but to be honest I'm only speculating) that the rent on that entire building went up after the Library moved out.

I saw Paul at the Grocery last weekend, he has been doing repairs and odds and ends from the back of his car - said he should have a new place open nearby within a couple of weeks.  I sure hope so, its getting cold shooting in my front yard.

Three years in Anchorage, 1972-75. My son Matt was born there. I would love to take him up there sometime and visit some old friends. I loved it, but my wife hated it. Something about having to wear a ski jacket on the Fourth of July as I recall.
