.......... Use a B50 12 or 14 strand string on my Griffin and/or Shrew Longbows? Seems to me that the six strand padded loop jobbies are a bit noisy. I have cat wiskers on 'em and shoot 10-12 grains arrow weight to bow draw weight. They are braced at 7 1/2" - 7 3/4" respectivly.
Not knocking these bows. I LOVE them! Just want to get them vewwy, vewwy quiet for hunting.
Thank You.....
... mike ... :help: ...
Is your bow tips set up for fastflight??If so try 10 or 12 strands of D97..
My dealings with cat wiskers is that they are noisy. Try wool for silencers.
Hey Buddy, my findings are the same a Mike's(K9), try some wool like hush puppies or something similar.
One thing I started doing this year with one of my bows that was a bit noisier than I thought it should be was split the yarn puff I usually use in two and put them at the 1/4 and 1/3 spots top and bottom of string(4 little puffs)...it transformed into a whole diff. bow....for the good!!
I think it would be ok, but what do I know??
I have cat whiskers on my bow, and find it superbly quiet. Not the thin ones that sag, and they arent tied in a knot around the string. These are thicker rubber and have a small zip tie around them. I do have em set up like Curt says...1/4 and 1/3's. The beauty of it is they are adjustable.
As far as the string, maybe you should email the bowyers and get a solid response buddy. I would hate to see anything happen to my...er....your bows.
Mike, when I had mine LeRoy [Golden Hawk may he rest in peace] twisted me up a perfect string for mine. He solved the problem. I just can't remember how many strands and exactly what material he used. He told me B-50 would make it worse!!?? I threw on a set of Cat Whiskers too. Maybe another Trad Ganger can help you out.
Curt, what is the normal size you use for your yarn puffs? I am gonna try them this year and curious as to how long and how many strands I should try. Thanks...Mike
I use 15 strands for each "puff" and trim each to a little 1 1/2" ball....
You can see them pretty good in this pic...

Beaver fur works real nice for me.I also found out 16 strand FF is quieter than 14 strand FF.I`m shooting a newer style Bear Super Kodiak 55#@28 and 611gr. arrows.Heavy arrows also make a bow quieter and also feel nicer in the hand when you shoot. You could also try limb savers.
i would avoid B50 on the shrew, it will be worse, Ron did a lot of testing on string materials and there is good reason he sends them out with 450+ strings
I had Leroy (Still miss that guy) make me one up for my shrew and have shot it exclusively in honor on him. 6 strand 450+ padded loops with Hush Puppys
also try bring the brace H down a bit on the shrew i have mine at 7 1/4
As a owner of 2 Griffin's and a 59'r :banghead:
A great solution would just be to send them on this way and I'll work on them for a "couple years" and see if I can quiet them down for ya !! :goldtooth:

Thanks Curt, so you use 15 strands in each of the 4 puffs and 30 strands when using only 2 puffs? They look good as well...Mike
6 strands of 450+, loops padded to 10 strands with yarn silencers have silenced all my shrews/griffins. As a matter of fact, I use that combo on my most of my longbows.
I don't have experience with a Griffin, but I have 2 Shrews and I build my own strings 10 strands of ultracam material with the loops padded with B50 to 16 strands and a couple of small wool puffs on each string ,shooting 10gr per pound. Dead Quiet!
I have shot the stock strings that come on the Shrew and no noise as well, try the puffs first and try moving them up and down the string.
Pat
Thank You Everyone!
I like the Woolie Whispers, they seem to work well!!
I like Beaver more than Sheep! :wavey:
