Title: Hush puppy + string leech= fftt
Post by: Mojostick on February 10, 2009, 11:07:00 PM
I've been playing around with 3 under and even 4 under. Frankly, I'm shooting best with the unusual 4 under. But is often the case, the bow noise is greater with 3/4 under.

I put hush puppy's on the string of my MOAB and it made it noticably more quiet. But today I was at a big box hunting store and saw those small limbsaver string leeches. It's like a small 1/2" T that you thread in the string. They're typically marketed for wheel bows, but much smaller and better looking than cat whiskers, in my opinion. They are a snap to install.

All I can sat is WOW!. Now, shooting that MOAB 3 or 4 under with those silencers is more quiet than any bow I've ever shot split finger. It's incredible. I can only imagine them shooting split finger.

So, whether you shoot spilt or under, try hush puppy's and string leeches if you want the quietest bow you've ever shot. I'm sure I lose some FPS, but I don't notice much with the naked eye. To me, the absense of any noise, I mean none, is worth a few FPS.

Try it, I think you'll be pleased.

Enjoy them while they last.

$12.00 for 2 pairs, and in 3 weeks my string cut though them. That little piece of soft rubber being split upon release and smacking ones self in the face is not very pleasant.

Did they make the bow quiet? Yes.

Was the price and durability worth it to replace them? No.

Tightly wrapped fur/wool puffs last a LOT longer and wont self destruct so soon.

Good luck with them!

LOL. I too thought they were great, and if I happened upon a pack of them cheap, I'd probably buy them. But not at the price I have to pay to get them around here.

Then again this was during the summer, and I was shooting  roughly one hundred arrows a day, EVERY day for those three weeks. One set split on a 48# bow and the other on a 57#. Seems the 57# split them fairly fast, but they hung around on the 48# a bit longer before being cut through.

i too use them and it seemed there were two differend brands of the same thing, one got cut up quick the other lasted forever, until i put it on a 9 strand fast flight,  the other wtring was a thick b50 so im sure the string makeup maters, they do work well.

I had the leeches on my Voodoostik along side hush puppies, the bow was as quiet as can be and I was pretty impressed. For kicks, I took the leeches off and shot it with just the hush puppies, the bow was just as quiet and the leeches are now sitting in my archery tackle box! Honestly, I couldn't tell the difference with them on or off my bow, the hush puppies work that good! Then again, I do shoot a Whisperstik!

I don't use them but have heard guys say that teh leeches made for Crossbows are more durable and work really well on trad bows.

I also tried them once back when they first came out, and like LBK, string cut right thru them in a day and a half....

A flemish twist string will cut through them after a bit,I find the string leeches work better and last longer with an endless loop string where the strands are straighter.

I've shot the bow with just hush puppy's for a long time. And don't get me wrong, I love them and have them on all my bows. They are the best "fuzzy material type" silencer out there. But with the addition of the string leeches, the noise reduction was complete.
From looking online, the ones I got were not the standard string leech, but the super string leech, which is thicker supposed to be more durable. The standard leech does look pretty thin.
I'll report back how they hold up.
If anything, making sure you have a good set on before a hunt maybe something worth considering.
Adding up all my hunt expenses, if I had to replace a few during the season, what's another $25 for complete silence? Between property expenses, taxes, gas, bows, equipment, ect. I think my venison is already running me about $50 a pound anyways. LOL

Update...

I've put the super string leeches on all my bows and have had zero issue's, or wear, with a single one. And I shoot everyday. The regular string leeches may fall apart, but the super string leeches seem to hold up very well. And they really deaden noise.

I have had string leeches on my MOAB for a year now and I shoot and hunt a lot. I do have two on both ends and I am not worried about speed as much as I am quietness. The ones I have, have not had any durability issues. I do shoot endless strings.

Mstick,

Take the leeches off and divide your top bundle of HP's into three bundles and install them in 3 spots 14 inches to the tip equal distance apart.  Do the same with bottom and you won't have to deal with the weight of leeches and it will probably be quieter.  Osculation is what your trying to get rid of and 6 "things" will always be better than 2.

I've used the Bowjax type that slip over the ends of your string...you can't cut them in half because they're outside of the strings.  Better yet they don't move at all.

Anyway I've tried both and sound wise I can't tell them apart, they are both very quiet!  I now have beaver balls on my string but I'm thinking of going back to the Bowjax type instead.
