I've been shooting a bow for some 50 years not knowing about front of center. I shot longbows, recurves, those crazy wheel things and back to longbows. I won the state indoor pin sight in 76 with the wheelie thing and never thought anything about FOC. This last week being bored sitting around the house I started playing. I shoot a 49# at 29" longbow. My arrows now are GT's , 3=5" shield cut 55-75 , 30" to BOP with 250g up front. The first few arrows didn't impress me much. Then a friend told me to stop dropping my arm to watch the arrow. All I can say is wooooooooow what a difference in flight. Penetration is unbelievable . Now I have to go back and read all the post I skipped. Old dogs can learn.
GB, brother Old Dog -- Me too! The more weight I put up front, the more arrows I'm busting with RobinHoods ... and the harder it is to find a backstop to stop 'em! When we're driving and hit a concrete wall at full throttle, do we want to be sitting up front in a sexy sportscar going really fast, or a locomotive at half the speed? Yes, heavier arrows are slower, with increased arc of flight and attendant challenges for accuracy and range. But my gosh, when they smack into a target, fake or live flesh, what a monstrous WHUMP!!! they make. And they just keep on going. All the arguments over kinetic vs. momentum, speed, etc. vs. mass/weight, can be solved as easily as measuring penetration into a standard foam target. It almost makes me weep, for the animals as well as myself, to recall all the poor penetration and lost-game or long-recovery experiences I had for most of my 50+ years of bowhunting before Doc Ashby showed us what should be self-evident if we experiment a bit, and was to a perceptive few. dave
Bob Morrison started talking about extra heavy point weight years ago, before Trad Gang was even in existence....I tried it, and I've shot them ever since(250-300grs.)
Now when I shoot wood arrows with "normal" weight points, even when they're way heavier...they "feel" light to me....
This has been going on long before the good Doc wrote about it and coined the term EFOC....
I just went through the whole OL Adcock tuning and then went on to the foc. I don't know if I have it right but I now have 325g up front of a 30" CE Heritage 250. Using the full arrow FOC calculator Im reading 21%. My groups have improved and when the arrow hits my block I am glad I have a second backstop. Now I need to work on sharpening skills.
