hey, has anybody been finding any deer antlers yet?
HI Garrett! Haven't found any yet, but haven't been looking too much yet. There should be some on the ground by now. Tell Richard that I don't have your banquet reservations yet.
Warm days here in PA so I will be taking down treestands tomorrow and checking some of my local shed hunting hot spots. I did see deer last week with antlers still on thier head, but have not seen any this week. I usually dont head out this early, but with the early thaw here I think I will find some!
Hey Fletcher they should come in any day now he just sent em in.
I've got five MONSTER mulies I've been watchin, but their still packin. Any day now!
Nothing yet. I'll give it a month..
Not yet. All the bucks visiting my backyard still have both sides.
Guys are finding quite a few in these parts. i haven't been out yet. One guy found one with 8 on one side. Never saw that one.
They don't start dropping in my part of the country til' end Feb--mid march!!! but I'm watching!
I found a sm one with 4 points yesterday. Already was a bit sunbleached and had been chewed a bit. Most of the bucks in my area still have em on though
While some seem to drop around Jan. 1, most in my area of Nebraska don't seem to drop until Feb. or early March. I went out for a couple hours on Saturday and found 0 sheds, but saw two bucks still carrying both sides. I start getting serious about Mar. 1.
I havent got to go yet but my dad found a really nice one yesterday. It taped out at 71 3/4. We had never seen this buck, hope he makes the mistake of walking by me next october.
Found one here in Ohio yesterday, a very nice half of and eight point I'm guessing. I have been out three times and this is the first I have found. Anyway happy hunting, I love hunting for these things I hate to say it but I'm obsessed.
Bryan Horner
saw a buck and a few does a couple days ago,he was still sporting 8 pts
My uncle found matching sheds in the yard off a young buck he let go the last afternoon of our season, but thats it, we have a hard time finding them or even walking around in the places our deer yard up.
Found one Jan. 16 but saw two hogs Sun. that had both sides. Also saw two that lost them .Went Mon. and jumped the one I really want to find and he looked like he had both sides[brushy].
Saw 3 bucks last week here in north eastern Kansas. 1 Thursday and 2 on Friday and all 3 had both sides.
Found a 46" 4 point this evening in NW PA. That's the earlist I've found one. Still had fresh blood on it.
About a third of the Bucks around here are shed. My Lab Pup has dragged two home so far. I don't get too serious until March either
Not sheds, but found this last Saturday....

Out of the water it looked like this....

Went walkabout yesterday afternoon. Pulled a stand, scouted, shot some stumps and found this.
Looked around, but didn't find the other half.
Garrett, your reservations arrived and you two are logged in.
Wish I had had a camera today.
I found a NICE set of antlers about 15 yards from the ladder stand I'd just loosened from the tree. It was big, heavy, and wide 9 point rack that I'd guess would have been somewhere around 140" class. If I held them with the same space between the bases as my mounted buck, the outside measurement was 21".
The fun part of this find is that the antlers were actually touching.. one lying on top of the other!!
I've looked long and hard for "the other side" of a rack for years, but have never found more than one antler from a buck until now.
Wish I'd seen him while sitting in that stand with my bow, but it was a thill to see that mass of "horn" sticking up from a distance! They're dropping them, all right!!!
Daryl
That is a nice shed Fletcher!
Would be exciting to find the match!
Shoot straight, Shinken
Horner,I know the obsessed feeling.
Do Bucks usually shed both at the same time? I was always assumed that they dropped seperately.
LArry
Larry, I have found them as close as touching each other and as far as 1/2 mile apart! With that being said I usually only find 1 or 2 matching sets a year! And the bigger ones seem to be close together. So I guess the answer is "depends"!
great day in the woods today, found two matching sets, these were the larger of the two, the right sides brow is 7 inches both sides have forked g2's

Those 7x7 frames are hard to come by. Great deer!!
WOW! Nice finds, guys!
No sheds yet for me but have seen lots of deer with them still on around here. Did find a nice skull 10 pointer though from a few years back I think.
Found these on Saturday in about 2 hours. The Lab pup found the biggest. Let him retrieve them all.

This just measured at 62in. Better than we thought. Hope to see this guy next year.
My oldest son found this one last week. He was really excited.
Gun,
That first pic was really cool.
some nice sheds there, I went down to my hunting property in Illinois a couple of weeks ago, because i'd heard reports of a lot of bucks in my area that had shed, walked into the bedding area were i hunt and jumped 6 big bucks all together ranging from 120'' all the way up to a 180 class 12 pointer, all the bucks had there headgear, amazing, i'll be going back there in a few weeks for sure.
Nice batch of whitetail sheds! Thought I'd share some of the Blacktail sheds I've been finding the last couple weeks.

I particularly enjoyed the picture 2nd from the top where you found the matched set on the trail.
That was *good* outing!
Shoot straight, Shinken
This batch was from two weeks ago. It dumped a bunch of snow, so I haven't been out since then.

Thanks Josh, hopefully I'll have plenty more to share this coming summer!
Here's a matched set of spikes I found at work last week. They were laying on the high side of a tree I was about to cut. Look to be a year, maybe two old. I have 13-14 spikes in my collection, but this is only my 2nd set.
No bone yet, but I saw a little year & 1/2 with both sides still on when I was out last week.
tree killer those are sopme great photos ( and sheds too!)
Found one fresh 4 point @115-120 class. Found six white ones, a matched set were they fell as he jumped a fence. A couple old horns nicer than the fresh one. They should start dropping any day. We have found five within about forty yards while cutting Cedar.
Have found a 5,4,2 and a spike. My big find was a skull from a boar. Big old tusks. Not supose to have boars in my area!
Tree Killer, those are some quality Blacktail horns. Looks like a great place to hunt.
I just noticed this thread. Really neat!
Tree Killer, LOL I love that diving picture.

We've only found two this year so far. Yhe one on the left is from last winter and I'm fairly sure it's the same buck as the middle one. The one on the right was found by my wife hanging in a bush.
Great finds fellas
Denny, without a doubt the same buck...very cool!
here is a monster shed i found yesterday, main beam broken at the G3 and all ready chewed some what. To give you some perspective I placed it next to my zeiss (not minis either) binocs

Ohhhh, you guys are planting those sheds and then taking pictures of them. :bigsmyl: Looks like I need to keep my eyes   for some sheds this weekend while bunny hunting. :bigsmyl:
Raven >>>>--------->
Went out here in central NJ twice this week and none to be found yet. We have seen one 3 year old buck and a young un still with both sides on, the cycle here is so screwy we have deer being bred into March and I believe in some cases April. I have young fawns that look to be 4-6 months old walking all around my property. it is rather freaky if you ask me.
Well, no swan dives this week. :knothead:
I found three brownies today, the first was a small 3pt...
Then I walked my tail off before finally spotting something up a trail...

Awsome.. My heart is still pounding just lookin at the 1st trail pic. That is a great find for sure.
Took a friend shed hunting with me Friday and he found this mega 11pt Blacktail shed!
A basic 4pt frame, but has stickers and slag all over it.
Found 10 so far here in southern Ontario,Canada, biggest one a 10 pointer 51/2" dia.at the base and 23" long main beam, still seeing some deer with racks.
THIS is one of my FAVORITE threads!
TREE KILLA those photos bring back many memories spent in the field (read that as the Blue Mountains of Eastern Oregon) searchin' for those elusive #1 Browns (mulies NOT blacktails)....
Postin' pictures like this should be prohibited! They get my heart pumpin'....
:~)
No sheds yet, but I saw a four and a six this morning still sportin', both sides
grat finds awesome pics any tips for a newbie shed hunter? stick close to thick cover and beddign areas?
can someone tell me when the mule deer and elk shed here in Co? i thought it was about now.
i found a couple old sheds the other day but the deer and elk im seeing all still have there antlers
Tradtusker, My *general* experience - searchin' for the *big* sheds - has been that the biggest mulies generally drop by the end of January and the biggest bulls drop by the middle of March (end of next week). The reason for this is because there is a certain amount of time required to grow a new set of *big* antlers for the next fall. I have seen smaller bucks and bulls with headgear clear into the end of June....
Of course, regional conditions, habitat, quality of feed, and other environmental factors may cause significant shifts in the time frame I have supplied. Most of my shed hunting has been in Oregon, Idaho, and Montana...although, I did hunt sheds successfully in Colorado back in the early 90's...they are definitely out there!
A local with a specific answer for the question that you have requested would be "golden" knowledge....
Good luck and beware - shed hunting can be addictive - I have been wrestlin' with it since I picked up my first shed in 1981....

shinken...do you hit the hills east Waller Waller in search of BIG elk sheds? I've always wanted to hit that country for some elk sheds, but usually don't have the time.
TK
found this one yesterday while stumping/scouting
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z267/horatio1226/shed.jpg)
ttt
Tree Killer!
As you probably are aware there is definitely some good country there east of Walla Walla for finding sheds - big country in fact. Of course, the Mill Creek watershed is not open except to hunters with permits in the fall.
A friend of mine who used to live in Pendleton hit the "motherlode" on the Oregon side of the border a few years ago while huntin' for spring bear and he literally filled his shed with elk antlers - multiple trips with a pack frame required - and packin' all that horn literally burned him out on huntin' elk sheds.... What was truly magnificent was that most of them were sets of matched pairs and there were sets that easily exceeded the 400+ inch mark. It was unbelievable....
Some other guys I know of rely heavily on the use of equines to cover the country and get the horn out....
LEGEND tells of a LEGENDARY HORN HUNTER whose antler pile was the stuff made of LEGEND!!!!

Have found between 70 and 80 here in IL.
Tradtusker,
Usually down here in SW Colorado most mule deer will have dropped by March 15th or so. Elk seem to be a little later, like by the 1st of April or so. Here's a few from past years and one from two days ago. I've only had a chance to get out once so far this year. I enjoy finding sheds almost as much as hunting the animals themselves, almost. (http://i330.photobucket.com/albums/l434/rhooley/IMG_1709.jpg) (http://i330.photobucket.com/albums/l434/rhooley/IMG_1718.jpg) (http://i330.photobucket.com/albums/l434/rhooley/IMG_1718.jpg)
Figure this one out. Walking on property near Lake Marion close to
Summerton. Came across a hot "scrape"! No joking. Perhaps there was a late doe in season and left a card for any interested bucks, one having responded? Any ideas?
Swamp
Sorry,
That is Summerton, S.C. The date was March 6. This is Lake Marion near where I-95 crosses over long bridge.
Still on many of the bucks locally, no good to shed hunt yet.

Found several big 4pts Friday, but they were all left sides!

here is a monster shed I found today along with three other small ones. This shed measures 65.5 inches, It has 5 inch base! Bladed brow measures 8 inches!

sunday there was a small 8 point that i have watched at our feeder this season, in our driveway with 5 other deer that had half a rack..
LittleBigMan that is one nice Whitetail shed with a MONSTER brow tine!
Sure hope you can find the match!
Shoot straight, Shinken
TREE KILLA - THOSE ARE BEAUTIES!
One thing for sure -
you sure are CONSISTENT -
all LEFTIES !!!
How about this - did you just have your LEFT eye open on this recent outing thinkin' that next time you would just keep your RIGHT eye open????
Looks like the porcupines and other forest critters are startin' to regain their fondness for calcium....
You're makin' me feel like a rookie with a capital "R" with all the success you're havin' on those 4 points!
Keep it comin'!
