Title: Western states
Post by: NW Jamie on February 08, 2009, 10:04:00 PM
A little advise and information on various state regulations would be appreciated. Are there any western states that have over the counter tags for either deer or pronghorns? As well is there any walk in public land to hunt within these states? Not looking for anyone's honey hole, just trying to figure out someway to hunt this coming year, thanks for your help.

Jamie,

Idaho has both deer and pronghorn tags over the counter.  Lots of public land (national forest and blm) to hunt. Deer would be the better bet as pronghirns have a lot of pressure on them here.  Deer seasons vary as to where you go but there are some early and some late. PM me if you need more specifics.  Also check out the idaho fish and game website for seasons and tag prices.

Montana has a draw for a 900 archery antelope tag that has real good odds of drawing. Also it is good for anywhere in the state that has an antelope hunt.

We have over the counter deer tags here in Alaska if you are willing to pay the price.

Washington has 3 species of deer and 2 of elk that can be purchased over the counter with lots of national forest land.

However, cost of tags for non-residents is high and animal numbers are not worth boasting about.

Idaho has lots of public land, way to many otc tags that just went up in price, and not many animals.  Come on up!

Thanks guys for the help. I will be checking out the Idaho regs since it is the closest. Washington non-resident cost is high, kind of weird since we have property there and will be moving back in a year or two, but that does not count. Alaska is great but I lived on the Kenai for several years and learned that you need a boat or plane to get to some of the nicer places. As always thanks for your time and good advice.

All Deer tags in Colorado are limited Draw only. Their are several areas where you are guaranteed to draw (not guaranteed to see any Deer).
Antelope tags are available OTC, the areas with the best concentration of animals are limited Draw areas. Usually takes a few points to draw in the better areas.
