I got together with bowyer Mike Rash and my brother and we went out on a pheasant hunt. Most of my day was devoted to working with my 5 month old yellow lab (Misty). When it was my turn, I handed the controls of my dog over to my brother and picked up my bow. On my second bird, I connected. The bird flew up to about 15 yrds high and slightly away from me and I released. As you can see in the photo, the arrow hit a little back and the bird flew about 40 yards or so before it fell to the ground. My trusty pup was right on it along with Mikes dog and the bird was had. A little later I connected with another one, which was a direct hit and it tumbled down to the ground right in front of us. What great fun.
Thinking back, this is one of my best trophies with a bow. the excitement of hitting it and recovering it made for a great day indeed.
Ben.
Nice shooting, what kind of broadheads do you use for pheasants.
I would be worried my dog would get all messed up running with a bird that had a broadhead in it.
Congrats, good looking bird and great looking Pup! By the look on misty's face she still wants to carry the bird around!
Awesome sounds like a great day!! You have a beautiful dog as well!!
thats cool!!!!!!!well done.. :campfire: :coffee:
that has to be a RUSH!
great shot, congratulations! :notworthy:
Congrats
Wow, nice shootin' Tex!
Geat job! The hardest part of your story is the short sleeve shirt you are wearing. It was 2 degrees at my house yesterday!
I love Pheasant. One of my fav. wild game meals. Our season ended a few weeks back. 3 days after it closed I had a rooster 15 yards out my bathroom window. Killer! Hope he makes lots of babies for next season.
Yea the weather here is sometimes too good. It has beed down right hot lately and we need the rain bad. Storm comming in today--hopefully it will be very wet.
Next up--Pheasant enchiladas.
Cool, I have my first trad pheasant hunt coming up in a couple weeks. Really looking forward to it.
That is great. I love pheasants, and upland in general. Haven't done it with a bow yet. I need to try that. That has to be a great feeling to take a bird in flight. Congrats.
Thats really cool! Great job connecting on two birds with the bow. I love pheasant hunting! Especially with a good dog. I've been running labs since I was a kid. They are by far my favorite upland gamebird dog.
Okay, that's definitely on my to-do list for this winter. I've got a great Brittany that lives and breathes Pheasants.
Ive connected a few times on geese and pheasants--The experience was MOST SATISFACTORY! I know you had some Kinda FUN! Two out of Three!! Wow, either youre really B.Ferguson or you are going to miss the next 50 to bring the Universe back into balance. GREAT SHOOTING! CONGRATS!
I have to say, when Ben asked me and my wife Debbie to go pheasant huntingWith him we had no idea what a show we were in store for.Debbie used a shotgun and I worked my lab Sage with Misty.Debbie shot some birds with the gauge nad had a awesome time. But when Ben pulled out the bow and shot thoughs roosters on the wing it was to cool.It was one thing to see it done once but then when he backed it up on another it was to awesome. We shoot alot with Ben and have seen him shoot well on the fly'n disks. But live birds were just to fun to watch.Bens the man when it comes to put'n the roosters down!
Dove season opens here in sept.
Ben will you be ready?
Mike
congrats! that looks like fun!

Hello Ben, Congratulations!!! Mike said you would be posting this hunt thanks for sharing. Two out of three I am impressed, great looking dog and Mountain Bow. My Mountain Bow according to Mike is taking shape, can not wait to get my hands on it!!!Wish we had something to hunt in Wisconsin this winter is brutal I am Jealous, just need to be patient I guess turkey season is coming in the spring. Please feel free to email or call me gave Mike the information, thanks Jerry.
I've always wanted to do that. Has to be a rush. Great job and if the lab retrieved them then all the better.
Mike, I am ready for dove season next September--I believe that just comming close on a few birds would be more fun than a limit with a shotgun.
Jerry, You will love your bow when it comes in. Get it broken in soon. I have one of Mikes New Leaf bows that he made for me a couple of years ago, and last year I had him make that mountain bow. The bows are identical and I shoot them interchangeably. This was my first kill with the mountain bow.
Everyone needs to try a pheasant hunt/bird hunt. It is truly a great experience
Ben, Now doves there is a huge challange -- I could envision it. Thanks for the words on the leaf bow, told Mike I am already planning my attack on when I should have him get stared on one of those -- need to sell some longbows first, more than likely. Enjoy that warm weather for me. Thanks Jerry.
Nice bird
