Title: Leather work patterns
Post by: Autumnarcher on February 03, 2009, 10:35:00 PM
I have a couple of questions for anyone who does leatherwork. I was given a box at work today, inside are 8 full deerskin tanned leather hides.

I would like to make a deerskin vest or jacket, and a couple pair of shooting gloves. Can anyone point me to where I can find patterns and some instructional help in how to get started, or someone who makes them?

I would certainly appreciate it. The friend of mine who gave them me asked that if I do anything with them, all that he would like is a pair of gloves. I want to make some shooting/hunting gloves for me too.

Do a web search. There are lots of sites out there that will lead you threw it.

Maybe search for Buckskin and leather clothing.

Go to goodwill and find a vest and or jacket that fits you well.  Buy the jacket and cut it up for a pattern.  Be sure and add extra to the edges that will be sewn or stitched for the overlap.

I have no idea on the gloves.  I have done a bunch of leatherwork, and I don't think I would even consider making gloves YET.  Do you have any previous experience?  Great gift by the way!!!  Congrats!

When i try out a new clothing pattern i go and buy the cheapest fabric i can find in a shop - old bed sheets will do - and try my new pattern out on that.  Only once i'm happy with my pattern and fit using the cheap fabric do i use more expensive fabric.  I wouldn't waste good hide on a pattern until i was happy with making the pattern on very cheap fabric.

Just go to any fabric store, ask for the pattern section & you'll see everything from socks to jean jackets etc., in your size even. Also pick up some leather needles, either hand or machine ones if you access to a good sewing machine.

Cut out the lining fabric (for a jacket say) as per pattern, pin or stable it together & rough fit it. Then proceed with cutting the leather & pinning or stabling & rough fit.

When adjusted, sew 'er up keeping all your stitching straight or on line for curves etc. Lining first, etc. Most patterns have some instructions, or any simple sewing book from the library will have all you need to know.

I use contact cement for leather to leather hems etc. Don't forget to remove pins & stables BTW.

Nothing to it! Good luck! - Q.

Check with Track of the Wolf (trackofthewolf.com) or Dixie Gun Works (dixiegun.com) they have patterns for several types of shirts and jackets.
