Title: Need help with right and left!
Post by: NW Jamie on January 29, 2009, 06:13:00 PM
Ok, so the follow questions are at kindergarten level, and I am supposed to be all grown up; but here goes anyway. Traditional seems to be a world on right and left and I do not have a handle on all of it, for instance:
I have the right or left hand bow part ok.
What about right or left fletching on the arrows?
Then there is right of left bevel on broad heads?
Is there right or left (clockwise or counter clockwise) to bow strings?
If you shoot right handed then do you use right or left hip quiver?

Right or left on the fletching doesn't make much difference. Most right hand archers use left fletch, but it's not required. Sometimes a right fletch can hit the index finger of your bow hand on release. I don't know because I use left wing feathers with a left helical. If possible you should match the broadhead bevel to the fletching. According to Dr. Ashby, this aids in the bone breaking twist of single bevel broadheads. If you don't hit bone, it doesn't matter much.

As far as the quiver, you would want it on your right hip. Since you will have your bow in your left hand, drawing an arrow from the quiver is accomplished with the right hand. Reaching across your body would be awkward at best, so have it on your right hip.

Hope this helps. Don't be afraid to ask questions here. Unlike some forums, you will get help rather than flamed here.

Hi Jamie

You did not specify if you are left or right handed. Most important is if you are right or left EYE DOMINATE. {JMO) Don't let the old wives tale take it matters not. To a instinctive shooter, which  I have no idea if you are or not.  As its very bad advice, and a old wives tale. That carry's on to this day.

The fletching issue is one only if you are shooting a single bevel broadhead. Then it should be the same. I'm left handed and shoot both right and left fletch. Rule of thumb is right hand shooter left hand fletch. As the arrow is suppose to rotate away from the riser. Although I do not believe it has that much effect. As the arrow does not begin to rotate in flight until, it has left the sting. So in effect it has only a 6-8 inch of flight to rotate.

Your hip quiver belongs on the opposite side of the hand that holds your bow. As it keeps out of your way when carrying your bow.

    Have fun and good shooting!!

Thanks for the info. I am right handed, hold the bow in my left hand, and am right eye dominate. Again, thanks; it is great to be able to ask and get help.
Thanks,
Jamie
