Title: Javelina Follies
Post by: acolobowhunter on January 29, 2009, 04:20:00 PM
Just had to relate a couple of incidents from a couple weeks ago.
1.  I shot a javelina, tracked him 70-80 yds to a dry creek.  Found him in a hole under the bank.  I crawled in as far as I could, turned on the flashlight Wow there were 7 of them in there.  We finally got 3 of them out and let the rest go. I got a good dose of fleas also.  :knothead:   Catch and Release?
2.  Sonny shot 2 arrows at running pigs, then one ran right up to him and stopped.  Sonny pulls another arrow from his back quiver, loads and shoots.  Pig runs away unharmed.  Sonny had shot the 1 arrow from his quiver that had a rubber blunt on it.  :knothead:    Catch and Release?  We had a real good time though!!!!  Getting ready to make sausage and looking forward to next year.  :biglaugh:

I hope this works getting the pictures out of photo bucket.  Next year I am going to wear a flea collar.

Cool photos, you are nuts to crawl down the pipe with them, they can and will bite! South TX hogs and javies are covered with fleas and other bugs. I dust em with Seven before dragging out. The ones from oil country around Odessa are clean as a whistle, no bugs.

I never thought about snakes being in dens like this - da.  I know there are lots in the area, but we have never seen them in the winter.  This was in west Texas near Ft. Stockton.
Next time I am putting on a flea collar and taking some spray along as well.  Also hope Sonny leaves his blunds at camp and only loads this quiver with broadheads.   Ha  :biglaugh:

Never having hunted javies before, I think I would have been more than a little nervous seeing all those little pigges looking back at me with that "what the %$%^$ you looking at?" look on their face.

It is like walking into nature's version of a biking bar.  :-)

Fun stuff.  Thanks for sharing.

A photo of the group of trad guys.  On the left is the son-in-law of the owner.  I am on the right.  Sonny the blunt shooter is the shortest one 3rd from the left.

Thanks again Gene for inviting me along. We had a good hunt and met some great people.

I think you invented a new form of hunting desert pigs "spelunking".

You just dont reach in and grab one of them either. They have 2 to 3 inch canines that rub together and are sharp(when they clack them together it is intimidating). One bit an ash shaft in half like it was a twig.

Looked like three arrows in that pig. Was it still alive when you pulled it out? Great job on recovery but I would worry more about snakes then fleas in that situation. That picture is one of a kind.  :clapper:

As we tried to administer the cop de grace on the oringinal wounded javenlia another one would step or shift into the way. We took 3 dead javenlia out of that den when it was all said and done. Only one ran for it, and we left 3 smaller pigs in the den.

You should have seen Gene jump out of the way of the javenlia that ran for it. That pig was doing mac 1.

I still love hunting elk and deer here in Colo, but we all really look forward to going to Texas during the winter.  When it is below -0 here we can be basking in the 80+ degree sun in Texas.
As Jack might agree, you need to take a lot of arrows along.  Good times for a bowhunter get - away.

I am going to have to shoot a lot better or take a backquiver full of arrows like Sonny. Except no blunts in it.

Looks and sounds like you all had a great time. Though I am not sure about crawling in a den with wounded pigs. lol.

I had a good time hearing all of your stories the other weekend.

I get to go after some Texas javelinas in March; can't wait. I hope to have as much fun as it looks like you had, but I may stay out of caves   :archer: . I will be hunting south of Ft. Stockton; anybody else hunted that area?

Great photo.  Looks like you have the makin's for some sausage there.  We usually mix about half and half with regular ground pork to make our sausage.
