Gene and I are leaving for the first of our five Texas Pig-Gigs tomorrow morning. Yesterday I stopped in Wal-Mart to buy a couple cans of Permanone. For those who aren't aware of this great stuff, you spray it on your clothing (not your skin)and it repels/kills ticks and chiggers when you're walking thru the brush. One application lasts a couple weeks and is supposedly good for several launderings. Excellent stuff. It normally sells for $6.48 a can at Wal-Mart. When I'm checking out yesterday the gal rings it up at $1. a can. Being the honest guy I am, I asked her if that was right. She said even though it wasn't advertised/marked as a sale it was an "off season sale". $6.48 a can for $1. I went back and bought every can on their shelf (11)before anyone changed their minds. Anyone who uses the stuff maybe should check their local Wal-Marts. Camping Dept. Have the gal scan the price before you check out. Just thought I'd pass along the sale of the century. I'm always trying to look out for you guys. Me and Wal-Mart... Always. :>) BW
Thanks Uncle Barry!!! :)
Thanks for the tip. I didn't know about the stuff.
 Thanks
Good deal!!! Thanks Barry...I will definitely take a ride to Wal-Mart for that deal.
Btw: I had a horrible case of the chiggers last season - felt like they'd never go away!!! I swore that I wouldn't let it happen again. It was brutal!
Appreciate the heads up and enjoy those Pig Gigs! Wish I was going...
Christian
I don't hit the woods without it. The only thing that Really works.
Thanks for the heads-up! It works great in South Georgia...won't leave home without it!
Thanks Barry. That is great stuff! I will check with Walmart tomorrow. When I used that in tick infested areas I could see the ticks falling off my clothes and dying. One spray was usually good fot two weeks even though the clothes were washed in between.
Tom
i'll double your money right now and send ya 2$ for a can, lol. no ticks/chiggers here now,12"plus snow on the ground.15 degrees out. thanks for the info
I've been using "permanone" or permethrin for at least 18 years. I buy about 8 cans a year. I not only treat my clothes (outer garmets) I also spray my truck carpet, seats and bed liner after cleaning deer or hogs. Sulfur powder aka "flowers of sulfur" will keep the chiggers off of you, put powder in a sock, dust yourself from the ankles up to your waist.
Nice bargain, but be very careful when using/applying permethrin. It's pretty potent stuff. Some old timers believe that if used in excess it'll make you old, gray, chubby and wear your hat crooked.....not that there's any proof of that.
Barry thanks for the info. Does Permanone have permethrin in it? It is the only thing that rep els deer ticks 100%. I hunt WI which I think is the capital of Deer ticks, but man does it work.
Yes, permethrin is the active ingredient in it. The brand name is Repel Permanone. Comes in a blue and orange spray can. Good stuff. bw

Thanks for the great tip Barry!!
Must remember to pick some up. Thanks for the tip Barry!
Yep, good stuff Barry. Don't forget to tuck them britches in your boots... Thanks for the heads up.
Barry, thanks for the heads up. I knew you had been in chiggers before when I saw the duck tape around your ankles in the armadillo chase scene on the spirit of the bow. thats my alltime favorite dvd. I get the feeling that yall might be just a tad full of sh*****t. DB
Was thinking about getting some tomorrow. Won't hit the brush without it.
One year at the Texas Sweat the ticks and chiggers were exceptionally bad. I made a believer out of a bunch of guys. I never had a one and the other guys were miserable.
Like a good friend I let them know about the stuff right after the hunt was over.
:D
Barry, How's your Walmart stocks doin?
Thanks for the hot tip... Will it repel some of these women that keep following me around?? Man they ARE a nusance.. Have fun in texas looking forward to hunting with you in June..
Drink a teaspoon of vinegar at night
That's a heck of a deal. Does anyone know how long a shelf life this stuff has. Does it ever go
bad??? I've been using it for several years always buy a couple cans during early bow season then never think about it again till the following year.
The stuff is magic. A number of years ago I went through Sniper School on a military base that had Lymne carrying ticks so bad it was the second subject of the initial briefing, after range safety.
I wore Perm treated BDU's. We were in the field/bush for nearly the entire course and by the end I had a total of one deer tick on my clothes, and he was about done in...
I spray my dogs down with permethrin to keep fleas and ticks off them. When I spray it on my boots It lasts about a week and nothing bites me. When I get a tick I spray it on there again. Good stuff but oily. I had not heard that REPEL made it in a human version.
Good post.
Thanks for the headsup Barry. Already have some but I'm gonna hit the Wal Mart and stock up.
Pig sticker,
So does Culbertson (?) or whatever name it is..yellar lable. I've seen the one for dogs right next to the people ones. REpel is easier to find most places.
I douse everything with it... and it says it lasts for 2 weeks AND one machine washing!
I do my head coverings and all, let it line dry for a day and the smell is gone. It even has helped keep skeeters off me at Blackwater Refuge on E. Shore of MD and they're awful down there.
Not like the Thermacell, but didn't have one then. I saw ticks crawl up my pantleg...and drop off stone dead in 6" just like the can says! Amazing stuff.
I do try to heed warnings to not get on skin! :D
They were probably on clearance at that store or that particular area. Every year the modulars are replaced twice a year (major changes) in August and then in January/February. Walmart doesn't put anything away....they clearance it to make room for new items. That's what you bumped into.
Permanone is normally an item that is stocked in the camping aisle with the other repellents. By the way, I own Walmart stock and it is doing okay given the circumstances regarding the economy. They also provided a good living for me and some other members of my family over the years.
going to look in wis tonight for some then take it down to Texas pig gig. thanks for the tip
Permanone gives me the squirts.
Barry, thanks for letting us know you guys are leaving. I'll be stealing your TV tonite..
Lasts alot longer then a few weeks too!
I tried to buy some today for the $1 price.
No luck! I had to pay the full price of $5.88. I left the can there, not too many ticks/chiggers here in Michigan at 0 degrees.
chris <><
Biggie you are supposed to spray it on your clothes not drink it!
Be cautious using it. Spray it liberally on your clothes and gear, but for some people it really causes a bad rash if applied directly on the skin. Great product, though, and a real necessity around these parts.
I tried to buy some last night also. The cashier said $5.88. I said, but....but....but....I just couldn't get her to say $1.00. Oh well, that's how it goes.
Same here, Irish. Put out the news to a bud and her ran to Wally in Central PA with a godo sporting goods dept and I hit the Wally here...all $5.88... and it was a TINY can! They still own them all!
Sawyer's had larger cans cheaper last season at my local shop...gotta see if there are any more...not a $1, or even $2...danged lucky ole Biggie! :)
I tired our Wal-Mart today Not $1, not even $5.88, but $6.48. So, like doc said, they still own them all.
Wal-Mart stores are regionally controlled so what one store has for bargains another store may not, at least if not in the same area.
Barry, would you mind spending the next few days driving around to your local Wal-Marts and buying up all the $1 Repel you can find, then selling it to the rest of us? 300-400 cans should do it. S'ok if it takes a little longer. No hurry.
Not on sale at my local Walmart but thanks for the headsup. I'm always looking for deals like that at Wally World and they will often come through.
You must be living right Barry, they wouldn't give me that deal here in MN.
Wonder if Barry stood there with a pen knife and scratched in a fake product code on the can and fooled the scanner!? :) :)
He probably had stock in some fuel company and we all spent a combined $2K driving around to Wally Worlds! :)
I know it's always a local thing on sales..which is why I called a buddy in Central PA... he was going anyway..same deal up there...no dice. :)
Got me outa the house though. Thanks, Uncle Barry, I needed a change of scenery! :)
I just buy the lawn treatment stuff that is 100% permenone(sp)just read the lable. You can get a big bottle of the stuff for 10 bucks. Cut it with water and put it in a spay bottle. Ive been using the same concentrate now for 4 years and I still have a bunch left. I use the hell out of it here in the summer too.
SL
See how he is.
He started this thread then took off for Texas...
He's down there laughing right now cause he has us all worked up.
We buy it in concentrate and make our own, just mix it up and put it in a spray bottle.
In the warm months, I never leave home without it.
That's obviously a great price for the spray cans.
ETA : I see I'm not the only one
$6.88 where I live. Can't bring it on the plane. (Aerosal can). I wonder if Barry has his locked up? :bigsmyl:
I've seen the concentrate at our local Rural King store cheap for a large bottle. I always wondered how it would work. What is the ratio you guys use to cut it with water?
