Title: Some wood spine questions...

Question #1:
I have Beman MFX carbons 30.5” that are 500 spine...all things being equal, approximately what spine weight (wood) would I need to shoot to equal that?  I shoot 150-grain points with these.

Question #2
My main bow this year will be around 55 lbs to 57 lbs at a 29.5" draw.  I'd like to shoot around a 150-grain head if possible; the bow will not be cut to center.  I might go up to a 160-grain head if I could find the correct spine.

Broadheads I’m considering are the 160 grain Magnus I, 160 grain STOS or the 160 grain Grizzlies.  I guess I’m leaning towards the 160 grain types.  :knothead:

70-75# should be about right in cedar, spruce or other softwoods.  Would need to go heavier with hardwoods because they don't recover quite as quickly.

The 500 spine shaft is 63# in the woodie system.  A quick way to convert aluminum or carbon deflection to wood spine is 31.5/deflection.

Your carbons are narrower diameter and rest closer to the center of the bow than will wood.  That's one reason you will need to go up in spine with wood.  It, in effect, makes your bow less centershot.  Also, you're going to a heavier head.  You might be able to use 65-70#, but I've found you can overspine most bows with wood, and they'll still shoot well, not so with underspining.  Good luck.

I agree with Orion, 70/74  would be my choice, assuming your cutting the arrow to 30.5" BOP.

Thanks guys...I've heard 70-75's before and they would be 30.5" BOP.

I knew I should have jumped at the yellow crested arrows jlnft had for sale in the sponsor's section.

I'm going to learn how to build wood arrows...I've been fletching and re-fletching arrows since I was 13.  I should be able to learn it.

I just finished bareshaft tuning some ACME POC shafts I have in 70#-75# spine. I sound with a 55#@28" cut to center Blacktail recurve that 29.5"bop with 160gr tips flew just a tad weak. Perfect when fletched.

I have almost the exact same setup as Snag.
54# at 28" Blacktail, arrows cut 29.5" and I shoot the same 135-160 grain heads on 70#-75# spine spruce shafts and Beman MFX 500's. On the Bemans I can load the front end with 150-250 grains and they all fly great fletched
