Title: Spring bear in Idaho, (Curtis beware)
Post by: KrEn on January 26, 2009, 06:37:00 PM
Wow, it seems im going to Teds place i Idaho to hunt bears,   :campfire:

I know not a thing about bear hunting, so bear with me.. A couple of questions:
I plan on employing a Horne Hunter Recurve thats 48# @ 28", but drawn 30.5". I have some GoldTip 75-95s, w/Magnus 2 blades, but plan on buying a couple of German Kinetics Silverflames. Probly go with 125gr for a 510gr arrow, would that be an OK setup?
I have all kinds of outdoor/hunting gear for Norwegian conditons (similar to Washington i guess, weather-wise), Is there anything special about Idaho (snakes, bugs, climate) that i need to consider?

You should have a blast. I don't know a thing about carbons but your bow at your draw should be just fine. No snakes there probably some bugs and the weather, just be prepared for warm weather, rain and snow and you should be set. Good luck.

I'd expect thick conditions for bears, are you doing bait, hounds, spot n stalk or calling?

Mr. Krister,

You have a plan! A good one! Cept one thing, those 75/95 should be spinned kinda stiff for 48# don't ya think. Gotta think even with 300gr up front they would be way over spined. I'm shootin 55/75 out of a 75#er. But if they flyin straight just ignore me. You'll have a great time with Ted he's a great guy. Looking forward to your adventures.

A good set of rain gear and a therma cell or bug suit for bugs. The bugs aren't bad. Most night's I didn't need the thermacell. There will be snow up at the pass but the grass will be growing at camp. The daytime weather is shirtsleeve and nights cool but not cold. Not likely to run into any snakes although you could ask Curtis about CGW
Beautifull country and a great camp.

Lots and lots of really steep mountainsides. Idaho has some of the steepest hills I have seen anywhere.

Dave's right on with the arrow assessment...I've tried them full length at my 28 1/2" draw at 63#,cut way past center, and I couldn't even get them close with 300grs. up front...and again, they were full length.....

Check into that Krister....

Good Luck!!

CGW , now thats funny Paul , I about spit out my coffee when I saw that, I am off to hunt with Curtis in the morning , I will bring up that issue.
Krister , not sure on arrows as I have no experience with those , but a good set of Arrow Dynamics would work well with that setup.
As far as the other issues , no worries I will get with you on all you need , bugs as Paul said arent all that bad but a good thermacell is a blessing if tey show up. No snakes, just lots of bears and good times.

Just got a call from Ted awhile ago. He gave me the news about Krister coming back state-side. Man this should be a great time. I can't wait to see Krister shoot him a bear. Looks like we also have a couple other guys that should make up a great camp. I'm looking real forward to the trip!

Paul, you funny!! At least I know how to handle snakes. CGW is a new challenge all together. Happy hunting Gang! CK

Quotestiff for 48#
Mmmf.. I'll just have to see.

I did select them out of the  Gold Tip Spine Chart (http://www.huntersfriend.com/arrowhelp/gold-tip-arrow-spine-chart.htm) . The poor 48# bow is 56# as i let the arrow loose, that helps.
Also I had some Axis 340s that flew like darts w/125 gr field points (sold them with the compound  :knothead:  ), and i read somewhere that that the 7595s are 340spine.. I'll know in a few days.

Just happened to read my own sinature line, it is Curtis words of advise as he let me loose on "javalina highway". Man i hope i am a better shot now, as well as a more patient stand-sitter.

Nothing of concern KrEn just bit of history that Curtis may or may not share although with Ted in the mix I may have over stirred the pot  "[dntthnk]"   Suffice it to say Curtis being the fine upstanding man he is took one for the team.

Finally got out and ripped the feathers off one of those 75-95s.
As i said they fly like darts w feathers, so too without it turned out.
@ 125gr tip weight they are just about abit stiff, bareshaft hitting about 5cm left from 12m
@ 175gr tip weight they are ever so slightly weak, hitting some 5cm right, from 12m again
@225gr tip weight they still fly perfectly but hit 10-15cm right.
On top i shoot fantastic (for me) groups with them.

Should i go with slightly stiff or slightly weak?

So there another couple things X-ed out on the list:

And man alive i shoot those carbons well right now. (it can not last)
With 40# Winex limbs on the Excel, they are darts. 554grs and 17.5%foc, doing 170fps.
Now Sid Ball has delivered, so if even Bob Morrison could i'll have two bows to take over.

starting to come together for the Bear hunt, but I wonder:

Just how jumpy are black Bears?

Got two bows tuned up here, took alot of tweaking to get both the Morrison/Border Hex 5 and the Excel/Winact combo to shoot well - but now they do! Done lots of bareshafting, even out to 60 yards...
And w/ broadheads too, arrow flight is damned near perfect.

The problem is noise. Excel/Winact bow is quiet enough probly (painted black and all camoed up it looks like some "tactical" bow) But the Morrison/Border bow is a bit noisier than i like - got two sets of wool balls on it, looks like half a sheep, but still it has a distinct "twang" and is very sensitive to release, poor release = lots of sound.
Now the Border limbs on the shorter riser shoots substantially harder so obviously i would prefer that bow.

Any tips for silencing the Hex Vs, on a Morrison ILF?
