Title: Cheap Homemade Small Game Heads
Post by: Skipmaster1 on January 26, 2009, 12:23:00 AM
I was at the hardware store yesterday getting some screws, something else caught my eye. It was an anchor for sheet rock. I grabbed a few and some nuts and bolts. When i got home I found a perfect combination to make up 125 grains on the nose. I thrded it on my Beeman MFX 500 and went out to shoot. It makes some noise but was hiiting right with my FP's at 25yds. I think it should really do a number on Rabbits and bushy tails! It cost me about 40 cents to make and you can add more washers/bolts to get more weight if needed.

I also did some testing and skipped a few across the ground and the teeth bit in great making the arrow easy to find in the snow and leaves

Is that nut spinning loose?  A very interesting head indeed.

It's not threaded on the bolt, but the "cupped" part before you it the threads fits over the beeman perfect. As it tapers down towards the thread, the arrow won't fit through. It centers it and locks down tight

That one weighs 125 grains, exactly what my FP's weigh for that set up. You could use a longer bolt and add more nuts/washers to get it up as high as you want. As I said it's a little noisy, but flys right with my FP's at 25yds

I'm thinking 10-24 (#10 diameter, 24 threads per inch)

I took an arrow insert to Home Depot and picked up a collection of anchors, screws, nuts, washers, etc and set up a few "po man's judos".

Thanks again for the thrifty ideas!

I think the 10 is right but not the 24.  When I tried it I couldn't get it to thread.

I have used them a couple times, not a great small game head, they impede penetration and I have had bunnies and squirrels get away. I should say I have had them get away with every head I used but these were not good. They also catch on brush and twigs so they flip or get knocked out of line when shooting into the stuff we shoot bunnies in. Great for stump shooting and roving though. Shawn

Inserts are 8x32 threads so I assume the screw would be that size. Correct me if I wrong. dino

I have not hunted bunnies(yet!) but I agree they will probably snag more than a standard blunt in brush. I'll try and shoot a bushy tail tomorrow. we are loaded with them here. I have had pretty good luck with rubber bludgens and great luck with Judos

Last year I shot a few squirrels with an 85grain FP backed up by a wingnut pointed forward that I ground the wings into points. They I got them right at 125grains as well and they were awesome, but they would stick into trees almost everytime

So the bolt size is #8-32.  Due to Skipmaster1's genius it gave me some inspiration for a head idea too.  I will post up a little later.

Hey thanks for the idea...i made some this afternoon...the bolt is 8-32 and if you use a 2 inch bolt with the t-nut (the wicked looking part) and one 8-32 nut behind it you end up right at 125 grains as well...and the nut threads on tight...dont have to worry about it spinning that way...!

thanks again for the great idea...cant wait to test em out! :-)

So here is what I came up with.  All credit goes to skipmaster1 since this is his original idea.  What I love about his idea is you can get your grain to just about wherever you need it.  I shoot 150 grains normally so I have a new head at $1.50 a piece right at 146.  Awesome can't wait to try these out.
