Title: Ameristep Penthouse Blind VS Yukon Tracks Enforcer Elite: opinions?
Post by: Tall Paul on January 25, 2009, 12:15:00 PM
I'm about to purchase my first pop-up blind to use turkey hunting this spring in Mississippi.

Everything I researched here on Tradgang says that the Double Bull is the best.  However, I refuse to pay $450.00 to $500.00 for a blind.

I chose the Ameristep Penthouse because I'm 6'5" tall and shoot a 64" recurve.  I need a tall blind.

I would appreciate any and all imput from owners of the Penthouse.

I'd also like to hear from anybody else that can provide insight about other tall/large blinds.

Any advice would really be appreciated.  Thank you in advance for your help!

Thanks, Paul

I'm about to order one of these after a strong recommendation from a fellow tradganger, and only $140!

I have one of them and I have a DB. Seeing you are dead set against getting a DB I'll tell you about the penthouse. It is a roomy blind and works good for turkey's, they are slow and noisy to set up this makes them a bad choice if you plan on getting in the turkey's bedroom before first light. If you plan on keeping a little distance from the roost area it should work out good. They have plenty of room for your gear and for another person heck you can shoot a bow made out of a telephone pole out of the thing, good luck and by the way this is just my uneducated opinion.

Thanks TrapperDave.  That is also a tall blind.  I'll have to check into that!

Hey Stone Knife, thanks for the advice.  I'm against the DB strictly due to price.  I can afford one, but I'm trying to not waste money either. I believe the Penthouse is black on the inside; is that right?

Thanks for the help!

I have the Penthouse and it is very roomy.  However, it is noisy to set up and will buckle in any real wind otherwise it is very good. I did buy a Predator Den which has the hub system. I like the rigidity of it but it is cramped and I don't like the windows as well..

I had a Penthouse blind until some jerk stole it!  Loved it, very roomy and nice to shoot out of.  To me it didn't seem all that noisy to set up.  I will say that with practice I got to where set it up pretty quickly.  One comment, If you leave them out for very long, they will really fade in the sun.  They turn kinda orange.  I never had any problems with buckling in the wind, but my setups were always fairly protected.  I really wish mine hadn't got stolen.

Its starting to look like the Yukon Tracks "Enforcer Elite" is the one for me.

It's 80" tall, has black on the inside, and its hub-style so it sets up faster.

I just wonder about the material and its effect on eastern turkeys?

I have the penthouse, the yukon looks good too! I usually leave my penthouse up a few days, or a week when put up, I use rebar on the corners as stakes and a couple of extas on tied down on the sides, no trouble out of it this way with buckling. me and and a buddy can stand up at the same time and shoot our 62" bows.It is a chore to set up though, about 6 minutes with practice but you can buy them for $129 at NathcezSS.com. Hope this helps.

I have a Penthouse too. Buy the Enforcer. Hands down a much better blind.

Black on the inside. Hard to brush in the roof on an 80" tall blind, but if you're 6'5" maybe not as much. I don't believe this blind needs to be brushed in. I still do it, but its really not necessary.

Thanks for the response guys!  I'm leaning more and more towards the "Enforcer Elite".

Rick-how would you describe the fabric?  Is it shiny?

Thanks, Paul

no , not shiny ......... and I like the camo pattern  .......... I brushed it in with oak limbs with the leaves still attached ( I cut them early ) and its practically invisible

I have both and the penthouse definitely has wind problems. The yukon goes out most often now. My yukon doesn't have the windows that are cut so low as the new ones so shooting you will want to be on a high stool.

My Enforcer Elite can go up and down in less than 60 seconds with practice.  I've fooled around with several different models of Ameristep blinds and I feel that the Yukon Tracks quality of materials is easily on par with Ameristep's.

I've got the smallest YukonTracks, the Dispatcher.  Really too small for anything but the smallest of recurves (still didn't stop me from trying to shoot my 62" GM out of it.  That was a sight...), the Enforcer series is a MUCH better option.  In hindsight I wish I would have gone that direction, but live and learn.

The material's not too bad, I'd recommend making a mud slurry and "painting" the blind when you get it new to dirty up the material and get rid of the "brand spankin' new" shine.  They've got a couple different camo patterns on them now, I really like the brush one - it's a lot easier to hide vs the dark blotchy camo that mine has.

They brush in easy enough, easy to carry, and setup just like a DB.  Just wish the fabric was the nice canvas that DB uses, but for the money their hard to beat.
