Last night I walked down the river where I had seen 3 deer the afternoon before from my car. It is a large open pasture.
I crept along a ditch to the spot where I had seen the deer. I took out my Torges seat and got comfortable.
An hour later, I was surrounded by about 120 deer feeding on some "fruit" falling from the tree about 30 yards upwind of me. It was the best day I have ever had afield until I sneezed, spooking them all. They are really yarded up and this group must have 30 bucks in it, including 4 or 5 that are over 150". I am going back out tonight with my 2 doe tags and hope to get some photos. Really amazing!!!

The first time i saw a deer yard was in north dakota its unbeliveable.See if you can get some picks.Good luck.

Wow, you should have some great shed huning in another month or two!
-
what's funny is that there must be 15 treestands on this property and not one of them is close to thetree dropping the red fruit. I've got to figure out what kind of tree that is!!!!!

wow good luck.

I was not quite in the right spot last night, so tonight I am hopeful that I can ambush a few of the girls. There I go again...
One other thing, one of the bucks that was about 20 yards from me, looking right at me, staring me down, and continuing to eat that fruit, was the largest bodied I have ever seen. He dwarfed the rest of the deer by about 80-100 pounds. He was a typical 4 x 5 maybe 120" or so but was his body HUGE!!!!!!!

Persimmons?
Crabapples?
Hawthorns?
Killdeer :campfire:

Get some pictures of the fruit and tree, that will help identify it.
I don't think they would be Persimmons mainly because ours all fell by late November around here.

Cool Justin, you should try to get some pictures of those bucks! Good luck with the doe hunt. I am still getting after the does myself. Hope to get one before the end of the season with my new RER.

dan,
This is really something. It's my neighbor's property and he lets a lot of guys in. I have not hunted there for probably 8 years. Too much pressure. It takes me 4 minutes to walk from my front door to the pasture. NE wind today, that is not good, so we will see later on. I will make every attempt to get some photos tonight. First, I've got to fill those two tags!!!

Good luck! Sounds like a heart hammer experience.

Autumn Olive would be my guess.
I first saw yarded deer in the Upper Penisula of Michigan in a cedar swamp. The snow was so deep we had to use snowshoes to get in. I couldn't bring myself to shoot the buck of a lifetime(at the time) a 10 pointer with MASS! at 7 yards because the deep snow was keeping over 100 deer pretty much captive. We were 6 feet above the deer on the snow and down wind. You can really move quietly on snow with snowshoes with practice. My Dad and a friend of his both said they were proud of me for not shooting in those conditions and pointed out that you only hunt yarded deer like this for meat when you are in need. Which with 9 kids we were so my Dad and I both used our tags on plump does.

Just got back in. The deer hung up just inside the cover. It must still be rifle season or muzzleloader season because my neighbor was set up upwind of me about 150 yards with his 3 children all dressed in orange. The deer came out and watched the orange warriors sipping cola and decided that it was not safe to venture to the tree. I will get some photos of that tree. The herd made several attempts to get downwind of the hunters and they did and they were within 20 yards of me but in super thick cover, thus no shot. Stay tuned. We have 1 week left.

They must be hunting with muzzleloaders Justin that goes to the end of the month also. Good luck with the does and with getting some pictures of the big guys.

the whole herd would have come out in front of me at about 14 yards if the orange warriors had not been on the upwind side. Will try again Saturday!!!!!!!
