Do hogs see in color? I know they can smell very well but was wondering if they are like deer and do not see in color.
Not sure but they don't see very well. If one looks at me I just stand still and they almost never notice.
I don't think they see in color at least not very well. Their eyesight is pretty weak as it is.
They seem to pick up on movement fairly easily, but as long as you stand still they'll go back to feeding or whatever it was they we're doing.
However as you noted if they get a whiff of you, Games over!!
Daren
They can see well enough to duck an arrow if they are alert.
They hear and smell great. Treat em like a whitetail that needs glasses
Thank you all very much for the info.
The pigs I have hunted could see well and smell better than anything I have hunted. They really did not like the black hole from the window on my groundblind. I know, I know people kill them out of pop up blinds all the time but did not work well for me and my blind even brushed in. I guess I am just saying don't underestimate them and like said above treat them like a deer.
I dont know if ther eye sight is poor,or its that ther head is position and angle to the ground. With a little brush around,it makes it hard for them to see long distance.Does that make sents.
I think it should always be mentioned animals never do one thing. They vary by the situation. On places with lots of hogs and little hunting, you can kill them with a spear. Places that are harder hunted they stay deep in cover and run at anything.
I think it's better estimated not that they see so good, but rather they are paranoid because they are blind.
If it helps this year I stalked up into about 4 yds wearing a blaze orange jacket and hat and he looked right at me and went back to feeding.
Swamp pygmy you just answered my question. Thank you all for the feed back.
Hogs haunt me.
Given an area with deer and pigs, I'll get closer to the deer every time. Around here, the hogs appear to have 20/20 vision and bionic-man sence of hearing. It seems the best bet is find their path of travel and wait for a sounder to saunter on by.
Even though they cant see very well (I dont know about the color thing) one thing a lot of guys over look is they are extreemly smart, studies say more so than dogs and over the years i have found that when hunted hard they will learn the shape and sound of a hunter. If you are in light camo standing in front of a dark background, vise versa, or make any kind of sound that they link to human, a hard hunted hog will not wait to see movement, they will just be gone.
On the other side of the coin if you get into a bunch of hogs that have not had a lot of hunting pressure you can get away with alot.
