Title: osage stave
Post by: razorback on January 24, 2009, 03:01:00 PM
Just unwrapped an osage stave that I got in a swap from another trad member and it has longnitudinal cracks running with the grain. Some of these appear to be fairly deep. Are these sorts of things normal with osage (first stave for me) and I just need to work around them or could they be a problem. The ends and the back have been sealed and the stave was cut about a year ago I believe.

Can you post pics of the stave and cracks(checks)? Are they on the back or belly?
Generally, checks(drying cracks) are not lethal to a selfbow but more of a cosmetic problem.   Pat

Hi Pat
I would try to post pics but not sure if photobucket is safe yet. I will take some pics and e-mail them to you if that works.

Sure Tony, that works for me. Send them on!  I don't blame you not wanting to deal with Photobucket until it is "cured".
