Title: Hunting on Hallowed land
Post by: Owlgrowler on January 18, 2009, 09:05:00 AM
(http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z304/Owlgrowler/Hallow/DSCN0344.jpg)Went up on the Kittatinny Ridge yesterday, was -5F when I parked the truck, finally got to wear the heavy wool. Saw some does, wheelie guy I was with missed one at 20 yards,... (http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z304/Owlgrowler/Hallow/DSCN0333.jpg)Stopped at this spring for a good warm drink. A couple years ago I found a piece of corrugated aluminum there, strange place for a shed or barn. (http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z304/Owlgrowler/Hallow/DSCN0338.jpg)This view from the top shows that this ridge is at least 200 feet higher than anything to the south. (http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z304/Owlgrowler/Hallow/DSCN0336.jpg)After tanking up at the spring I decided to take a different route to the top. That's when I stumbled upon this. (http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z304/Owlgrowler/Hallow/mem.jpg) (http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z304/Owlgrowler/Hallow/memdate.jpg) (http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z304/Owlgrowler/Hallow/DSCN0334.jpg)Memorial to the 7 men that died Sept 19, 1942.This Toby Keith song is still playing in my mind.
"There's a lot of good men dead,
So that we can go to sleep at when we lay down our head."

To me, all land is hallowed. Finding tangible evidence, and learning therefrom exactly whose flesh is incorporated into the soil we tread, brings the meaning home in a flash. Very powerful, for me, very prayerful, dealings in the hinterlands.

These men died in the middle of the second World War, for all of us. It is well that we remember them with prayerful gratitude. Ever wonder Who guides our steps on a hunt?
