I got to playing around at work the last couple of days and decided to see how my programming abilities are. I run what is called a wire EDM machine at my real job. I wanted to build myself enough glue on broadheads to last a lifetime. I plan to build 3 dozen of these made out of 420 stainless steel hardened to 56 rockwell. The are 2.8 inches long and 1.2 inches wide with a single RW bevel. I have now plans to sell these to the public, but figured my fellow tradgangers might like to see them. Thanks for looking. JD

I meant to write "no plans to sell them" not "now plans to sell them" . Literacy ain't one of my strong points as my buddy Meach would say.
That is a spiffy cool looking broadhead, and I like the idea of a one piece, machined head way more than 3 punched pieces brazed together...
When and if you decide to sell them, I'll be your first customer!
That's a wicked looking broadhead! What do they weigh?
Ken
Interesting,but what about the bleeders?
How about that ferrule? Can I see a pic of the base? Is it machined to accept a tapered shaft or does it have to be shaped like that?
330 grains without the ferrule cut out...don't have to worry about the tip deforming on these! He wants them to be around 250 grains ready to glue on the shaft.
Jim...they look even better lined up like that! Wicked!!!
Sorry I had some inside info. :readit:
Josh
They look like buildings in a Si-Fi movie. Hap
J.D.
I like those! Are you gonna put tanto tips on em?
I love super duty broadheads. Very nice job.
Ron
They would even make beautiful Christmas tree decorations!
They look awesome!
Fantastic job!
Yep, those look deadly. Let us know how they sharpen. Looks like the ferrule might be a little high in the back to lay a file across them.
keep us posted, those heads look lethal & STURDY!
Impressive!
The ferrules will be machined to caaept my cedars next monday. The back part of the outside of the ferryle will be ground down for sharpening purposes. And yes, they will get a tanto point when finished. I will keep everyone posted with pictures of the progress, including the testing!!!! I am getting enough Stainless Steel ordered to make 3 dozen. 1 dozen should last me the rest of my life. It took me roughly 4 hours to write the program and trig out all the angles needed. The main blade is .080" thick. It will take roughly 2 months to get 36 of them cut out. If all goes well I plan to have a giveaway of a couple of 3 packs to some fellow tradgangers.
I take it you are a lefty. Other than the right bevel thing, they look great!
I volunteer to put just ONE on my 2009 Brown bear arrow!
E-mail sent Jim!
Very cool. There is some serious talent on this site.
How tough would it be to make a solid 3 blade the approximate size of the new Woodsman?
Wow!!!...those look like tanks!
Nice job!
IMPRESSIVE!
very impressive i look forward to seeing them finished up and on a shaft
 :notworthy:
Super! I like the right wing twist as well, due to my stock pile of rw fletch. :-) Keep us posted on the finished product.
Those are insane! Very cool that you can program something like that and get them cut out. Wow!
They look great, I'd like to see a pic of them mounted on a shaft looking at it from the nock end.
amazin
Awesome!!
I already have a program written for the 3 blade heads. I will put them on the post if I have a chance to cut one out on Monday. They are actually easier to cut than the 2 blades. I'm aftaid that they will be way too heavy though. I will get one weighed as soon as it is cut. JD
Got any pics from the back end? They are pretty nice lookin'!! dino
You figuring on selling them for $20 bucks a half dozen, right :bigsmyl: ... Good lookin heads...
Man That is an awesome skill to have. Those things look tough. I don't have much knowlege on the single bevel thing and was wondering about the left handed comment?
I am as impressed as everyone else and in no way being a critic. Yet I wonder if those cool-looking "winged" ferrules aren't so large and so angular that they will work against the twist established by the massive single bevel? Would it be possible to program for rounded ferrules rather than wings? Something like the AK "Ashby" head shown here? It's not so striking in appearance, but rounded is likely more functional than winged. Anxious to see test results! dave
Awesome heads. Maybe you should consider onesies instead of threesies to spread the chance of getting one of those things you are offering. I for one would sure like to obtain one for my wall.
ChuckC
JD i would love to see the 3 blade,I have a buck in mind for a test run next year. :bigsmyl:
JD Hayden loves his bow THANKS. (http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj10/longbowben/110.jpg)
Or, leave the ferules the way they are and put a double bevel on the main blades.(I know it goes against the whole single bevel idea, awesome looking head Bro)
And we complain of the cost of Silver Flames?
Machined from a solid block, huh? At a cost of $478.34 each, they'll be a steal! LOL. Probably get them for the bargain price of $1,250 for a three pack!
Pretty cool.
I think a rounded ferrel would be both more appealing and more functional.. Otherwise they are outstanding.. Of course the points need to be tanto'ed
I wish that I could program for a round ferrule. It like I said. They aren't finished yet. When completely done you will be able to see your reflection in them. I like the idea of the onesies giveaway. As long as you dont lose it you should have it forever. I have plans to have one on an 800 grain footed shaft to zip out of a 65# osage curve. I have split a vertibrate with a grizzly head. I wish that I would've saved that piece of bone to show people. JD
BTW JD, I've got this purpleheart arrow (TradGanger Luke "The Ursus" Woodruff made with his Shaftshotrer) that is fletched RW....
Lets not be so critical of the ferrule until it is tested. Although the rounded Ashby ferrule appears to be a better concept, it is still too new to say it is the "cats meow". Maybe JD's design will slide right through as well. Remember, this is just the beginning stages. Give the guy a chance.
Like the Ashby reports, I for one await the results of the tests. Good job JD and thanks for the pics.
Mike
I don't think there is any thing wrong with this ferrule design. It will lift and seperate tissue away from the blades and trailing shaft letting the arrow continue with less surface area drag. This same type of sharp apex ferrule was used by G5 on their Shakote' head. The rounded ferrule actually has more surface area and in theory therefore more drag. This one has only the apex to drag on and should not be a hinderance in any way.
I really like your design, craftsmanship, and thoughts put into this head. You are truly an artisan. I wish you well with these...for a lifetime.
I just got to look at them in person and all I can say is WOW!!!
JD was working on the tips and will post some pic's soon...they will be deadly that is for sure.
Hey JD...can't wait to stick a thunder chicken with one this spring, I'll even let you take the first shot.
Bring a back up arrow or two, accuracy by quantity! :biglaugh:
By the way the ferrle is going to modified, the program will not allow him to round it while they're being cut out.
And they are sharp!
Why not set the ferrule up with a RH bevel as well...more bang for your buck :D

as long as the ferrule doesnt hinder getting a file on the cutting edge i dont see it as a problem. Like Charles said G5 incorporated an angled ferrule in the shakote design, common sense would dictate that less surface area would equal less drag?? as far as the tanto tip i will admit i am uneducated in the merrits of this design but i do know that i have shot several bear razor heads with "flat" tips like JD's head and i had no problem at all. tradgang is an awesome place to come and talk hunts, bows, gear or whatever...like leatherneck said lets not be so critical, give JD a chance, the head is in the infant stages. and as far as people whining about the price...who cares, JD said they arent for sale anyway. he is the one dealing with the cost and he is going to be nice enough to give some away!! when i get my hands on one (i will steal one from his quiver if need be) i will blow through a 260# whitetail...tanto tip or flat tip, angled ferrule or rounded. BAD A$$ head JD, keep it up.
Nicely said pete,I want to get my hands on a 3 blade. :clapper:
Speaking of drag and surface area and non-production heads; has anyone ever tried adding dimples similar to golf balls to the surface of a head? The reason for the dimples on the golf balls is to reduce drag and improve distance. I wonder if similar dimples would reduce drag as the arrow is passing through flesh. A solid head like this one would be a good candidate because there's enough material for dimpling. It would also help with the weight. Just wondering?
Chuck- Maybe I will give the dimples a try. It would be a good way to reduce weight if I find them too heavy. They also use the dimples for road cycling helmets.
Once again, I'm flattered by the pm's, but they are not for sale. They are for fun. And because I have more time than money. I'm hoping that I will never have to buy broadheads again.
JD
JD,
They would make a great St. Judes item.
Nice work.
JD, Awesome work!!
Incredible work!!
Dimples have been used on New Archery Products (Thunderhead) Crossfire three blade cartridge style broadheads.
Josh
JD, looks like a pretty sweet broadhead. Looking forward to more pics!
To put the size into perspective here one is next to a 190 grain el grande Grizzly. I have also put a tanto tip on them. My wire machine won't do them for me(Same for a rounded ferrule). I finished programing and modifying my 3 blade program. As soon as I don't have any "rea;" work to do I will get cutting on it. I have the Stainless Steel to get rolling on those too.

nice u and v axis work, let me know if you need any sink edm for your 5 degree taper .
keep that 420 to max 52-54rc, got time check out the 300xtreem- morrison archery ( 700hrs of sink edm for 100 psc ) and people complain about cost?

We work with a machine shop local to our company. I have been over and seen some of the machines. Its very cool what you can do with them. I'm envious as I'd love to play around with one and make a few things. Very cool BH can't wait to see them finished and on and arrow.
Another thought
If you have enough material when you drill in the taper for the arrow you could probably leave it straight so you don't have to taper your arrow. Just cut to lenght and insert. Probably not enough material though.
Love the tip JD. Keep the updates coming.
That's a serious looking head, JD.
these heads mean serious business
Here are some pics of my 330 grain glue on 3 blades. I have cut the ferrule in these, so that is the finish weight. I will get more pics of the 2 blade ferrule after I get it finished.

Very cool.

Can't wait to send one down range at a thunder chicken, we're going to nock them over with these.

:ooks and sounds good

incredible. absolutely awesome
Very nice...
SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!!!!!!! That 3-blade looks awesome? Hey bro, what's the cut on it?
The first heads getting cut from pre-hardened SS are coming soon. I'm getting the blocks cut with the ferrules ready. As aoon as the cone out of the machine they will be ready to go on an arrow. There is a 1" cut on the 3 blades. JD
Wicked. They look like the next generation of Stealth.
Very cool, very curious how they'll perform, keep us updated.
Now thats :scared:
VERY SWEEET looking heads. They look bomb proof!
I could "field" test out a 3 blade on an elk this fall :)
Great work!
Bob
These heads look awesome(and I don't use that word lightly).
I definately want to be on any list for a tradgang give-away, especially for the three blade heads. Great Job indeed.
Whooooo doggies... thats one sweet looking head! :notworthy:
Very nice!! That three blade looks wicked! Nice work.
