I thought Barry was signed up for the second hunt 20-27th. He must of changed dates.
Barry has been booked for 1st week. I have already been collecting bait and grease...........
Be happy to bring another chair for you bd.
this is gonna be good.....
Sorry we missed connections on the cake Tom. I'll be back driving in a week or so and I'll take a run up and see if it's still available.
Should be.
Are you getting your magazine from the MBA?(if not let me know)
there'll be a story about bear quest next month.
Man Paul I don't know if you could hang for 8 hours in a ground blind with the bowdoc waaaahooo...bd
Might cut into my nap time :)
I'm one of the guys that had to back out on the 2nd week, with work down to 3 days a week just couldn't see how I could make it happen. If you can do it, sign up you'll not regret it. Super camp and a great bunch of people to swap lies with. Along with all that, you just might see a bear two.
Hey Tom, about 19-1/4 unofficial (from the Taxidermist) inches, will know for sure the end of the month.
pm'd you Tom
RROCK beauty of a Bear, Congrads !! Hope work gets better for you.
This hunt makes two of my "Best of the Best" lists:
Best Trad Gang group hunt
Best bear hunt - anywhere!
Sure will miss being a part of it this year, but for those that have never done something like this - DO IT! You WILL NOT regret it!
I started picking up Sweets,Grease & 5 Gallon buckets already !!!! Only 5 months to go !!
It's truly a GREAT hunt and an even better group of guys! EVERYONE has had shot opportunities and Tommy and his crew work their arse off to ensure everyone gets what they need! This year will be my 4th trip in a row, God willing!
Wow Matt old 3 legs was a big one huh ? I will miss the guy's that will not be able to return this spring and looking forward to meeting the new ones.
This is the best bear hunt going bar none.Super good people incredable fishing really good time.Yes as Rr mentioned even bears roam the woods there. If you check his post you will see his bear from last year will very likely make book at around 19 1/4" 250#.Plus it only had 3 legs.If it would have had all 4 legs like a really normal bear it would have weighted 300#..bd
I was thinking I should bring some arial targets for BQIII we could shoot at over the river then retrieve arrows with boat !!!
Congratulations again Matt.Sorry to hear you can't make it. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/Shortbldtr/Trad%20Gang/IMG_0009.jpg) A pic of your "pumpkinhead"
I want to bring rod and reel to do a little fishing too.Ya know I may also if its OK with you ship my 1959 Kodiak and my 1959 Bill Sweetland forgewoods to your place ahead of time.I thought it only fitting to take the old girl hunting on her 50th birthday.Where's Doc ??? bd
I'm bringing rod and reel too. I'll run boat for ya bodoc. Nate
Your on brother...lets have a fishing derby. You and me againest the whole camp. What da ya say ? bd
Sounds good. If you want I can sneak a bag of fillets into camp just to make sure we come out on top. Nate
Ya Paul, I'm disappointed that I'm not making the hunt. Got a dozen tapered POC shafts that where gonna be made up special for the hunt and the PV "Bear Quest II" bow, it was gonna make the trip also. The mount of "Stubby" is supposed to be done the end of the month. Can't wait to get him back.
You folks are gonna have a great time again this year!!!!!
Hey Nate, hows it going?
Going good Matt. Just enjoying the cool weather. 11 below this morning. Just wish we could get some snow with it. I guess I'm going to have to buy a plane ticket this year if you aren't able to go. I don't think I want to make that ride alone. The dogs aren't going to like stubby.
Looking forward to the pic's when you get "Stubby" home!!!
What did you end up with for an arrow?
-11 Thats cold Nate. We're at a balmy +4
Go ahead and drive, Meathead. I drove it last year from Springfield, IL, with a stop in NJ both ways. :D
Matt and I drove it last year and it wasn't to bad, but I think I may be able to fly cheaper than drive on my own.
Paul that +4 does sound balmy. You've probably got snow there. I've got maybe an inch at the house and none down at our farm. At least on the frozen ground I can drive the jeep closer to the treestands I need to pull.
Hey guys was wondering if anyone got a picture that I took of Matt's Bear where I found it laying on the rocky incline ?? I deleted it by mistake I guess and did not get a pic for me or Matt !! I need one and so does Matt !
Hey Matt, Did you get a start on makin' a knife with Stubby's broken bone? This spring with bowdoc the "bladesmith", I'm goin' to have a hard time coming away with any unique knife handle bones :) Doc
Tom I did not take any pics that night we recoverd Matt's bear. The only other one would have been Eric.Maybe he has a copy ?
Doc I was thinking about driveing out this year so I could haul all the leg bones back to my place...bd
Doc, I wouldn't even know where to begin in making a knife. However, I have been reading the knife building forum trying to get things figured out. Theres an old Maple tree on the back of my place that the last two winters have not been very kind to. This spring I'm gonna wander back there and see if I might find some nice burl out of limb crotch. I've hunted around that tree for 30 years, might make some nice scales for the Bear Quest II knife.
Paul, I've got some 50-54# shafts for the bow. Think they will work?
Might be a bit heavy Matt although I used 60-65# tapered with no problems with a 145gr.FP. I think the guys that were shooting the bow at the Quest found 45-50# to fly well so you should be close. Although I paper and bare shaft tune the quickest way I've found to see if I'm in the ballpark is to try one with a broadhead full lenght or as long as they are now and see what happens. You can always sand them a bit to bring down the spine if needed.Keep my posted.Love to see some pic's when you get her tuned
Matt Doc Springer and myself were shooting those Grizzly sticks out of it in Que'bec.I think those are 60-65 they shot great.I also think those had 165 grain tips mounted which may have taken the spine down nearer to 50-ish..great shooting bow PV...bd
D. I am not positive but I think Grizzly Stiks are 50#-80# I know that seems wierd but I think its because they are graphite. I chose them over Sitka's because I figured I could use them with my DH (55#) and my Griz (64#)
You might be right on that one Mike they may have been heavier spined. They seemed to shoot good out of PV's long bow or PV long bow shot them good...bd
Hey Nate you got any of them there bigeye jigs ? we can buy some leaches up at the camp but I'am not certin what type jigs to bring..
Brent you gonna make it back to Que'bec this spring...I know you got some of the correct jigs...bd
Tom, if any spaces still open let me know. My 16 year old and I might be interested?
Hey Bowdoc I'll bring a wide assortment. We'll eat fish one way or another. Nate
My kids got me a Rapula eletric AC DC fillet knife for fathers day last year.If were going to do some bigeyeing I will pack the new knife along.Makes short work of lots of fish.
Once again I will try and cut a deal on a 50# box of #1 giant king crab leggs for the feast one night.Last year the price of 50# of #1 king leggs and claws was almost the price of a good bear hunt.bd
I responded to a number of PM's & emails about openings in the last 3 days so could be ........
bowdoc, I thought you were makin' knives? Now you've gone an added electricity to 'em  You never cease to amaze me ;) Doc
Yap Doc ever since I got hit in the head these new idea's just keep poping up like electric knives who'ed a thunk huh?
Hey what's say you stay in Que'bec the whole two weeks with us this spring. You ai'nt got nothing to do anyhow. We can get some fishing time in that way. Those walleye was way to good of eating last year to pass that stuff up.Come on Doc what da ya says ? I got some great new jokes and dance moves I want to teach you..bd
Come on Jeff, ya' gotta keep up with the times! You going to make yours battery operated, or will a guy need an extension cord?
Hey now Jeff instead of a paracord handle you could make a knife with an extention cord handle. Then you will be right up there with Bowdoc. Nate
Dude's mine has a 20 foot cord...and yeah you guessed it she's AC-DC baby just the way the bowdoc likes em..bd
Tom: I cannot believe you still have any slots open for these bear hunts. For all you guys who are even remotely thinking of attending... don't hesitate for a second. This is THE best deal on a quality bear hunt and camp there is. EVERYTHING is included in the price including N/R bear licenses and even gas from the U.S. border up and back. The complete hunt; boats/motors; lodging, and meals by "The Real" Bowdoc (if he's the real one.. I don't ever want to meet the unreal one!) I do sport shows all the time and talk with guys who have been on multiple bear hunts who have yet to see a bear. I really feel bad for them. Then an opportunity like this comes along and they let it slip through their gingers. The year before last I passed up eighteen DIFFERENT bears at under 10 yds. in six days. I don't think there's ever been a guy on this hunt who hasn't had multiple bears under 10 yards. Never. If you want a bear with your stickbow.. this is the hunt. This is not a sales pitch.. it's just fact. Hope to see you there. BW
what's the cost?
I've been lookin for my papers in the mail.
I'm sure its going to be a good hunt!
Uncle Barry is not kidding guy's this is a great hunt and yes you may even see a bear or two.Its not uncommon to see 5-10 even 20 per week sometimes.
Tom sets up the stands with traditional archers in mind. They are all good clear shooting lanes. Its just a great time.
Yap I'll be there both weeks cooking washing dishes singing danceing telling jokes oh yeah and skinning bears just like always.bd
This will be my first bear hunt and I cannot wait. I was hoping to spear one, but I guess that can wait! :bigsmyl: Shawn
Shawn, what week you hunting?
Shaun is down for the 1st week.
Whoops now Tom we may have Shaun and Shawn joining in this spring.Shaun from the collecters forum and Shawn from the main forum I call them...dang I better shut up.I'am not sure now...At any rate I'll be there. This is gonna get goooooood.....bd
Bowdoc how you doin on securing some Crab & Halibut & maybe Salmon for BQIII ?
D. If you come down to my house and show me how to catch a steelie, I would let you bring whatever you catch to BQIII....
TTT
Firstest bear hunt for me too! Can't wait 'til June!
SSB soon as my kid get's a day off we are thinking that.
Oh yeah Tom I spoke with Ron yestreday he's got the boy's working on the king crab and halibut.
Rob you'll have a great time there's always plenty to do.The hunting is good fishing is good food is OK real good time.bd
Bowdoc , Don't lie now , The food is great! Going to miss you guys this year, as I told Tom the dates conflict with my St. Jude's hunt in Austrailia . I tried real hard to make it work but regrettably not this year . Without a doubt the best bear hunt you could ever ask for and with a great bunch of guys to boot , doesn't get any better , Hopefully I'm in for 2010 , Fred
Hey Fred I'll miss you alot my friend we sure had a blast tracking together.OK maybe 2010 then...bd
I'll miss you too buddy, good luck in Australia!
I'am not going to Australia....bd
No, YOU'RE going to Alaska next year bowdoc! Again: I will miss you in Quebec too FRED! :archer:
No one has said one thing about this hunt that is an exageration. Best of everything-too good to tell about without appearing to be stretching it. My second trip and looking forward to more. We'll miss you Fred-good luck down under. See everybody in LaTuque...Grant
One of these years we'll be makeing that trip for sure.I would also like to make the pig-gig one time with you boy's.
I'am thinking two week in La Tuque with you guy's is about all I can handle in one year....bd
Tom I found the pic of Matt's bear the night of recovery...bd
here it is Matt and old stumpie..bd (http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii175/bowdocsarchery/mat001.jpg)
Cost? This sounds like a blast!
That bear of Matt's is a hog!
Matts bear came in at 250# and it only had 3 leggs...bd
Matt was just showing some mercy and putting that poor crippled bear out of his misery.
I wonder what it would've weighed with 4 legs? : )
What the skull measure out at?
I think Matt said he is 19 1/4.
I know it was 19 plus on the skull measurment..That was an old boy there thats for sure his teeth were broken off plus he had scares all over his face from fighting eather one could fit that discreption Matt or Stumpie I guess...bd
Ya got me even more pumped now!! Cannot wait to meet you guys!! I have my set up all ready, should I bring a back up bow? Shawn
Bah, way too many things going on in June already, dangit. Would love to make this hunt.
Shawn, you can bring a backup bow,but there will be plenty there !!!!
Bear hunting Is some of the best hunting there Is!! For all of you that are going on this hunt I wish you all the best of luck!! Sounds like It's going to be a blast!!
Bowdoc, Why thats nicest thing you ever said about me. Thanks for posting that picture. Now, there's probably a way to copy that picture and print it off, but I'm not smart enough to figure it out. Can I talk you out of a copy of it?
Well thank you Matt your a swell guy and we'll all miss you this spring..That pic I loaded is a pic of a pic and I did not take a good pic of it.
Its one Tom took the night we recoverd the stumpster he mailed them to me.We could email him and see if he has the negitive still to make a copy.He may even be reading this right now...If he don't have the neg I would be happy to send you my copy.
Shawn as Tom mentioned you can bring a back up if you like but there's always plenty of bows there from old models to new models and everything inbetween..bd
Shawn, A couple of years ago before Bear Quest Traditional, Brian Vincent gave up his compound and used my Griffin to take a bear. The LDB bow also did double duty on two bears for Allen & myself. That event posted on Trad Gang was one of the big reasons for the birth of Bear Quest :) Doc
That is fine, I would love to kill a bear with someone elses bow. I am ready now and it is a long ways off! Shawn
Well it looks like i'm official for week 1. I'm really looking forward to this as my first bear hunt... First group hunt, First time in Canada, and of course meeting all of you.
Welcome Matty! You are going to have an experience you won't forget just meeting bowdoc! :biglaugh: This is my fourth year in a row going with these guys and I wouldn't miss it! I'm in for first week too. I look forward to sharing a camp with you.
Matty,
You will have a great time !!!!
Tom,
The check is in the mail. See you folks on the 12th!
oh yeah I'am in for both weeks again plus an extra day or so to help Tom pack the truck and trailer for the trip..and Shawn its OK to be ready already.I still got the same items packed from last year ready to go this year.Well I did wash my socks.bd
Matty- It'll be great to meet you; this is a hunt you'll never regret. Tom- I just started to have my tax return forwarded to you but figured you might have trouble cashing it,lol. For those who haven't been in Tom Phillip's camp, you are in for a great time. I started looking forward to this year about thirty seconds after we left camp. Grant
BTW Tom- what is the current line-up for week one? Grant
Hi guys!
I will be there during week one too. I really look forward to this hunt and meeting all of you. Sounds like a great time.
Monte
Tom, while you're at it, please give the week 2 roster
thanks
Kevin
 :campfire: :archer:
Matt did you get ahold of Tom for the pic ? bd
bd, hope ya washed the skivies too!! Or is it better to smell bad so the bears think their is something ripe at the bait!! I may have a new stick to bring, we will see. Shawn
Hey bd, yes I did. Thanks. That will be a great picture to hang on the wall with the Stub.
heck no Shawn I burned those the last day.You won't have to worry about the human smell as Tom's stink baits will mask any human oder that you could think of.That crap is made of fish guts that have been stored in buckets with the lid on in the sun for oh bouts 6 months..That home brew will cover any smells and knock your sock right off in the process..
Glad you got the pic Matt I will sure miss you this spring...bd
SO... I'm having a dilemma on which bow to bring. What are you guys planning to bring? lets hear some setups..
1959 Bear Kodiak 1959 bear razorhead 1959 Bill Sweetland forgewood arrow.bd
I will be bringing my RER Arroyo 54"s and 54#s at my 28.5" draw. Shooting a heritage 150 with 175 up front, total arrow weight 515 grains. My other set-up will be a Centaur 58" same specs and cedarsmith shafts with 160 grain snuffers, total weight 600 grains. I may just bring the RER and when Don kills his bear, shoot his if he will let me!!
:bigsmyl: Shawn
Border Longbow: Griffon GL. 64" 62#@27
Border Recurve: Black Douglas Swift 60" 61#@28
GT's with Wensel Woodmen's 540gr all the weight up front.
I think there may be two others also shooting 1959 Kodiaks this spring.Be kind of neat to hunt with a 50 year old bow for its birthday..bd
I'll have a recurve of my own making and a silvertip. My bow will just be going on its first birthday.
Not sure this year, kinda accomplished my goals the last three years by harvesting three nice bears with the LDB bow, my own osage selfbow/knife river stone head, and last year with Eric's beautiful hickory selfbow/tippit forged head.

Guess it's going to be either really primative or have wheels :scared: Just kiddin'...Doc
A tippet forged broadhead on a beman 500. Undecided on the bow . Probably hasn't been built yet.
Now if I could just talk him out of that sweet little caper with the beverage opener........
Hmmmmmm....Probably my Kanati 58" 63#@30" shooting Beeman MFX 340 with 300gn upfront. Total weight 660gn
Also I'll be trying really hard to get at a bear with my Shaun Webb selfbow (72#@30") and a Woody Blackwell 300gn stone point.
Or one of the Morrisons...
Or the Shrewesque...
Or the Miami Valley...
Or my Horne...
Hmmmmmmmm
:biglaugh: !
I believe I will be on the '59 Kodiak bandwagon with Forgewoods and greenies, though its a long way off and things change. It will be an old Bear stick of some kind.
1st week Shaun?
Well I'm going to be the guy with the wimpy 42# Abbott or 42# whisperstick , both drawn to 30 " so close to 50# at that draw. Beman ics energy with 400 up front. Either woodsmans on steel or 100 gr snuffers on steel . Total weight of 660 gr still tweaking things a little but should be close. Drew
Paul, week 1. It will be swell to share camp again.
Looking forward to it Shaun!
Hummm...might have to figure out some new swap tricks. Might be fun to try for a Big Blackie with a PV bow :D
Oh boy this is gonna get good.bd
Like to see you take one with a PV bow Doc
Might be able to (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/Shortbldtr/IMG_0268.jpg) find you something.....
Building a donation bow for the MBA (midddle two)thats your # and has the rest on the off side.
Drewsbow,
Any of those setups will be plenty !!!!!!
Tom : I put arrows through two doe this season , complete passthrough . I was only shooting 300 up front then . I really like the lighter bows now and have confidence in them  Drew
Drew I've taken 2 bears the last 2 years in Que'bec with a 50# Bear take down. Both were pass through's one bear went about 20 yards and my bear last year was only 13 paces from my stand.I think 50# is plenty for black bears.A well placed shot is the trick to short blood trails...bd
I might have to jump on this band waggon, I have My Dads 1969 Ben Pearson which has never laid down an animal, 50# but I think Pulls 48 anymore... You kids think this is sufficient? I Can Load up a sitka come clode o 600 gr With a good Head. Deadly?? Gimme your houghts Otherwise I'm bringing my Pronghorn 55# or my New A&H acs #50
Ya know Paul...there are more of these where this one came from ;) Doc

:) :) :)
Any of them will be just fine Matty.
Paul and Jeff - I could see that trade coming from 1,000 miles away! :bigsmyl:
Matty, that bow would be plenty good medicine for bears. Good shot placement and you wouldn't have any trouble at all. BQ is a great place to use special bows you might not otherwise feel comfortable trying because the shots are so close and well controlled. It would be really cool to take a bear with your Dad's old bow
Could be Whip. ;) Glad to hear the K-zoo went well.
Doc, you ever come up with any gear you want in trade for that slim lovely you had wth you in Texas? ;)
Well boys before we know it Spring will be here !! Heading out for Pig-Gig tommorow will give update of BQIII when I get back.
Stay warm
Jeff, I still haven't finished those two long blades. We'll have to work something out...Doc
Now that the weather is somewhat better here.I was doing a little getting ready for BQ-3 this spring. Its a great time of the year to start praticeing up for your shot at that black bear in LaTuque this spring.
This morning I was praticeing
a little shooting at my bear target from 3-4 feet away.I'll move closer tomorrow...bd
Can't wait to see ya bd! I swear that bowl you and I hunted was that close! That was an exhilarating hunt right there and that bruiser sure did warm yer feet! :scared: Tommy says he's already stored a bunch of sweets and it won't be but a few months before we be there!
Oh yes Steve thats a great stand right there and may be my favorite. It gets you kind of up close and personal with them.Tom said he's been collecting bait and supplies already.I'am amped and can't hardly wait.See ya soon bd
3 to 4 FEET!!!
My arrows won't even clear the bow!
Yeah, and the treestand is kind of sunk down which is why we call it the bowl. I had one bruiser stand up last year and he was up past my head! There's usually no competition for that stand and bd was kind enough to suggest it for me. When I first sat there though I had doubts about his true intentions for me! :biglaugh:
Rob those are the long shots Steve and I were talking about. On the really short shoots ? you have to draw your bow and let the bear pass by first...bd
Hee hee hee!! :D Looking forward to it more & more by the day!
I,m looking hard, anybody have the price and other info? I am getting pumped just reading about it. Chuck
Two Tracks- PM Tom Phillips for details. I don't know how many slots are open and your total expense will depend on whether you fly or drive. I can tell you its a great value as this is my second year. Tom and his crew do a first rate job and like other Tradgang hunts, you won't find a real "problem child" in the bunch. I'm afraid to try to quote costs without the numbers in front of me but I promise, its a great deal!!
Grant
Rob,
Which week are you hunting, first or second?
Tippit, come up with a piece of gear you're missing. I needs a good knife to skin out a 'bar' with.
I just did, I hope I can get some info before it fills. I would like week one, With mr.webb and the two rednecks.
Two Tracks, I am almost positive that the hunt is filled. Tom was at my hunt this weekend and I believe it was filled! Great hunt from what I hear and I am sure it will be. Shawn
Yes you will have to contact Tom.I spoke with him this morning and I thought he said week one was full...
Rob keep praticing those 2-3 foot shoots..things should be fine...bd
2-3 ft. I am gonna sharpen my limb tips and spear me one!! Shawn
Shawn some how I could see you doing just that
Hey Shawn you know how some of these fellows have been stabbing the hogs with a long bladed knife while a couple dogs keep the hog busy ?
OK scratch the dogs off the list and just bring a good strong long bladed knife with you.I'll show you some real fun...we don't need no stinken dogs.bd
I thought some of you guys might like to see what you are in for. This is the skull from my BQII bear; he measures 18 6/16.
Tom, do you have a picture for the wall in the store in LaTuque?
BD, now that is what I am talking about. I may be bringing an old Kodiak as my back up bow. i have a arrow and broadhead all tuned up for it!! I am still thinking if the knife thing doesn't work going with a 600 grain tapered cedar with a big ol' 160 grain Snuffer on the business end!! Flect, great skull there, that would be a dream come true for me!! How much did your bear weigh? Shawn
Thats nice work on that skull Fletcher. Very nice.
Tom, could you possibly post up 2 lists of who's booked for each week please? Just so's I know who I can safely make fun of.
Thanks mate! :biglaugh:
Shawn, He was 204, beautiful coat, soon to be a nice rug. Taken at the Raptor stand.
Rick,
Skull came out great !! Nice shed antler too.
I was planning on trying to do a collage for Spt store in laTuque.
Rob,
Will have list soon for BQIII
What a beaut!!
There are some nice bears there and you just never know when one will stop bye for lunch..Here's a pic of a few bears I've arrowed in LaTuque. The one in the middle scored 51 4/8...bd (http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii175/bowdocsarchery/bhs002.jpg)
Bowdoc, You trying to scare the boys :scared: The one in the middle looks like the one you rode in on...horse :biglaugh: Doc
now bd, isn't that middle one a girlfriend of yours from long ago, y'know, the one who wouldn't eat the poison mushrooms? :biglaugh:
na na I think you guy's are wrong thats the bear I shot the year you guy's were not there...
Hey wait a minute Doc you may be right that does look like the one I rode to town on.
What the hell anyhow you guy's see that hole between the eye of the middle critter ? thats when he was looking at the spot light and I shot him right between the peepers with a field tip. That dropped him like a bad habit..what the heck it made book and is one of the few horses listed...bd
you boy's been praticeing your shooting ?? won't be long now and we'll be headed to the great white north ahh ? Tom what about passports or ?? we have those inhanced drivers lic.here in Wa.that will work also I think ??? bd
