i looking at getting a b/head target for practice. which target do you like best?
is the yellow jacket b/head target from 3rivers any good? i'm assuming that you can shoot field points into it too.
also where do you get it from if it isn't from above?
A deer is my favorite broadhead target. Hog comes in a close second....
sorry, couldn't resist!
i knew someone would say that. :bigsmyl:

What he said...
I need a new one too. I destroyed my foam deer with budget open layers; too many dropped shots to the leg. I'm thinking about getting a McKenzie Shotblocker Bowhunter and a McKenzie Carbon Buck. I like the Carbon Buck because of the front leg being part of the vitals; no plastic connection. Plus the vitals are clearly printed on the target.

Good answer Steve, ya beat me to it!
I think the BEST is a clean pile of sand. Not exactly portable but lasts forever.
I have a Yellow-Jacket, shot it for 2 years, still in decent shape and works good. I shoot it sparingly. Field points come out very hard!
A broadhead doing what it does best makes short work of most any material.
Eric
Ive got a delta black bear and a glendale buck both of them work great but the delta buck will take twice as many shots with or without broadheads and the core is half as much and the price of the target is a lot cheaper
I quit buying targets they are too expensive. I make mine for 15 dollars and they outlast my store boughts.
I've yet to try broadheads on my design though. I'm curious how it will work. At 15 bucks I might make one just for BH's.
I agree with a pile of sand. It last forever and is alot cheaper. I do have a yellow jacket for my camp target, and it seems to hold up well after alot of shooting. Morrell doesn't recomend shooting field points into it. Maybe thats why WESTBROOKS field tips are hard to pull. I havn't shot a field point in mine.
How about some details on this $15 design of yours? I'm all for saving money.
'The Block' works well and it has four differnet sides to shoot at. Once one side is worn out with a BH, I turn it and go to the next. I guess you could say its four targets in one. Cost ya a pretty Franklin though.
I use hay bales stacked 3 high. When the middle gets worn out I just put one of the others in the middle.
I agree a pile of sand is perfect. I am gonna make up a box for the basement with sand to shoot indoors. Shawn
Man you definatly do not get the outdoor channel. If you did you would know that every one in the world shoots the block target and a mathews bow. Just kidding around with ya. I am not knocking The Block target it looks like a good idea to me. I personalyy shoot 2 square bales of hay with some practice broadheads I only shoot 45 pounds though. I thought if a guy had to he could make a frame to compress the hay bales out of 2x4s and all thread and that should easily stop 55 pound bows. If I had a pile of sand in my yard it would be full of the neighbors cat's poop.
man you guys are fast 2 of you posted before I got mine typed
I'm another one that prefers to pound sand. I have a pit in the yard at home and one at my hunting cabin.
Rhinehart 18-1.
yeah i'm a fan of sand too but now i don't have access to any because i'm travelling. so i need one of the portable targets.
If anyone has some photos/diagrams of their sand targets, by all means, please post them on this thread. I've been thinking about building one for a year or so for shooting from ground level....Thanks
Portable Target - Reinhart 18:1. Best investment I've made so far, regarding a purchased target.
Stationary Target - homemade 40"x40"x18" foam target with a varity of pin up animals on it (usually the big cardboard deer). I can deal with the "snow" and the negatives for what I've got into it. I'll probably make another one this summer so I can make a bit more of a backstop. I like my neighbors.
For portable the Rhinehart 18-1, Small Block target, or Morrell Yellow Jacket.
They are in order of what is IMO the best to worst and also most expensive to least. You do get what you pay for when it comes to targets.
Chris
18-1 is the best. i have put over 5000 BH shots into one and it was still stopping my arrows from my wheel bow with 90#KE
I would last even longer with my Trad gear only
Problem with a "Sand Pit" in the back yard... Neighbor's cat use it my dog wants to clean it up.. Maybe I should hang a tree stand and do a little kitty hunting.
Oh if your shooting into the sand you may want to think twice about wiping that "Mud" off on anything you touch... Damn cats...
another rhinehart 18-1 vote. yellow jacket broadhead target holds up well but getting the arrows out can be tough at times. 18-1 best all around portable target imo.
The yellow jacket is good.
Once it gets shot into a bit you can use field tips too.
Sure Trad Only. It was just getting late last night. I'll show you guys mine. I like it alot. It's large, incredibly light weight, portable, can be built to any size. It's four sided, so you can walk in a circle and shoot it from all angles. All pieces can be replaced as worn in $5 increments, and the entire thing is only $15. You could even make it roughly into an animal shape if you wanted. Certainly the body of a deer or pig.
It's truly so simple it's stupid. At Walmart buy the correct size polyester pillows. $3-$5. Use two bed pillows for field points. Comes to $10. Then go to hardware and buy a $5 tarp. Put the pillows together and wrap tightly into desired shape. Tie off and place inside a burlap/cardboard/contractor bag. And your done. I prefer contractor bags because I can twist it down tight and tie it off.
It's a great idea because the premise is rather than stop the arrow by friction on all sides, it stops it by cushioning the force itself. The pillows mainly absorb the shock and prevent it from going in more than about 2-3 in at twenty yards with a 45lb bow. For broadheads I think I'd use an extra pillow and/or a larger tarp to wrap it. Like I said I've never tried BH's though so it may not work well for them. Probably not when I think of it more, it may cut the materials too much. But it definitely works for FP's. To remove arrow just twist and pull in the direction that will tighten your tip.
I used to buy the regular "black hole" or whatever at $45 but I was going through them way too fast. Literally. Going through the target in about 2mos and seeing light through it within about 4.

These last much longer and I can make 3 for the same price.

I unrolled it so you can see how simple. Just tightly rolled tarp and pillows with a covering.

On that line has anyone come up with any homemade broadhead stopping material? I'm trying to think of what I could add to that target to stop the blades from reaching the pillows.
I found 2 closed cell foam squares at a foam specialty shop in Seattle 6 years ago - $36 each, both are about 30" square. They are 3" thick.
I hang them from my three bale stacks.
I shoot mostly field poits to get in shape and then I get out the 4 arrows with dull broadheads to fine tune before hunting. I always find that release and aiming has more affect on my shots than the difference between a broadhead and field point. Some would say that is becasue my bow is so slow.
I know the speed demons with the training wheel say it make a lot of difference.
Sheep's wool stuffed in a Burlap bag works good for me.My 2 blade Magnus BH's go through.I think if i stuffed alittle tighter they wouldn't.i've also heard you can stuff plastic bags in a Burlap bag and get the same effect.
:campfire:
Yellow Jacket works for me!!! I only shoot a few b/h's a few months before hunting season opens. I use the BLOCK for F/P'S.
:archer:
I've no doubt the pillows I use now would work, I just don't want to pull out a large chunk of polyester every shot when I retrieve my arrow. Same for the plastic bags.
