I have been shooting and hunting with 66" straight limb longbows since 1991, but arthritis in my bow hand has caused me to switch to a recurve. I have found that unlike a straight limbed longbow, brush can easily become trapped between the string and the limb on a recurve.
I also used a tip protector on the lower limb of the longbow, but when I tried it on the recurve it gets thrown off after a dozen or so shots.
I would very much appreciate any of your thoughts and / or experiences regarding Brush Buttons and Tip Protectors, favorable or unfavorable.

Brushbuttons help quiet the string a little, but they really don't do much to stop brush from getting caught between the string and limb, just gets caught a little higher on the limb. I assume you're using a rubber slip-on lower tip protector. Can also get or make tie-on tip protectors of leather. Those won't come off.

The only tip protector that I have found that works for me is the plastic ones with the hole in them. You run the string into the hole and then on the tip as you insert it into it. The protector will not come off!
3Rivers has them. Their part number is 4370.
I'm a big fan off brush buttons, the beige colored ones. They are needed hunting as much brush as I do. Don't use a tip protector. IMHO jeff
I use the tip protector from Black widow that has a tiny hole drilled in it to let water out. They stay on the tip very well, have never had one fall off. When stalking I set the recurve on it's tip with the riser closest to me , then lean the top tip against my chest while I glass for hogs . I would have a tip in about a week if I didn't use one. As far as brush buttons I have never needed them.

I use tip protectors from 3 Rivers archery # 4029. Price just went up from 2.35 to $3.99 btw.
They never come off. Just push them down over strung nock and you're set to go. I don't unstring the bow every day so once on they stay on. I'd say I have some bows with the tip protector on for a couple of months now. Recurves btw. Especially on the lower limb where it scrapes the floor.

PS My recurves are all 62 adn 64 inches.
I've used brush buttons for over 40 years (I'm 65) and love them. They do help quiet the recurve and keep most brush out. Tip protectors are good but if water gets on your bow it may rot the bow tip.
I have used both for years and love them. After a wet hunt, I take the limb protector off and dry it off a bit before putting it back on. As stated above, the brush buttons help quiet a recurve.
i used buttons for a while but they made a noticable difference to my arrow tune when i took them off. it made my arrows act a bit weaker, hence the buttons were sapping a bit of performance. i shoot dacron so i'm already behind slightly in speed, so now i don't use them. but they are handy.
as for tip protectors, i use the black rubber ones from 3rivers. i put them in boiling water for a few seconds then slip them onto the tips and let them cool. this makes a custom fit. i've only had trouble with them flying off after i've put a little bit of silicone lube on them cause they were hard to get off. i worked out that you only need NOT MUCH! :banghead:
Thanks much gentlemen. Looks like I need to try the BW ones. I was going to put on the plastic one with the hole in it, but it looked really ugly. Maybe it looks better after it's been shrunk.
In the 1950's we quickly adopted brush buttons out of necessity, but our bows were really loud! Sounded like a single stringed guitar. We trained the local cottontails so well (by missing then a lot) that when they heard the "twang" of the string they would make a sudden 90 degree turn. We tried putting 2 brush buttons (that's all we had back then) at a point 1/4 of the way from each limb tip on the string and they helped a lot with the noise. Maybe I should try that again. ;)

I have used black electrical tape b4 for a tip protector, seemed to work fine,
Best tip protectors I've found so far. Made by Saunders, been using them for years.

A sliver of innertube and black tape for tip protector. I use brush buttons.
Where did you get those, Yellow Dog? Nice. BTW,did anyone every try that Tommy Tape, the self amalgamating stuff?

Rub some bow string wax on the tip before slipping the protector on,works for me
