Title: central illinois traditionalist
Post by: toddster on January 06, 2009, 04:12:00 AM
Been thinking for longtime about setting up a club/organizaion for central illinois traditionalist to get together shoot, gossip, dinners, yada-yada.  How many of you in are interested in this?  One big thing pondering is having a roving shoot. To where once or twice a month all those whom can, show up at a shoot at a different range and shoot and have a cookout and b.S.?  let me know.

We have a club here in east central NY, The Mohawk Hudson traditional archers and it is opperated in the format you are suggesting. We move to different ranges quite a bit but it helps that PREZ "Bear Misser" Jeff Vadney has some incredible sooting on his home property.

Have you guys ever heard of the United Bowhunters of Illinois (UBI)?  Take a look at their web page, we have several regional events with one coming up this weekend at Silaom Springs State Park near Quincy.  Several of us will be there camping for our UBI End of Season Hunt.  Good guys and a lot of fun, although not many deer get killed... If you're near there stop by either on Friday or Saturday and introduce yourself... Shoot me an e-mail if you would like some specifics...

I think that moving around will not only keep it interesting, but also help support are clubs (which much need it).  I use to be the president of the Decatur archery range and know how hard it is to keep getting people there.  I also know traditionalist love to have a good time and shoot together, my basis.  I am a lifetime member of the UBI and will be at the Banquet.  It is a good organization, and I am not trying to compete with it, just get a few of us together to have some fun and build bonds.  Buckracks7-how have you been?  I plan on attending a few of the shoots in decatur and get back on the circiut now that work and family will let me.  Sure miss shooting there and you.  Hopefully we can all perhaps get together for some stump shooting or bowfishing.  If anyone is interested this year, My rig will be ready to hit the best bowfishing spot in illinois, shelbyville.  Keep your string waxed.

I've been giving this some thought.

An informal group that meets at different archery clubs/ranges for shoots/events would be a good option. That would promote traditional archery in the various archery ranges in the middle of the state.

In Champaign/Urbana you have the ECIA (which has a great outdoor 3-d range, btw). In Perkin you have the Pekin Archers (They used to have a trad event annually). What do we have in Danville, Charleston, etc?

Having this informal traditional archery group meet at the different clubs for events would be good those respective club's businesses. The ECIA, among other clubs, has regular outdoor shoots in the Spring-Fall, and even winter leagues.  No need to create a traditional shoot or anything; just attend a clubs regular shoot.  McShane mentioned the UBI. That's a good idea.

It could start off small: just the traditional archery folks showing up for a club's regular 3D shoots. From there it could expand into the occasional selfbow jamboree or traditional-only event. Traditional-type events would be subject to the respective archery clubs discretion, of course.

So, the first baby-step would be for a group of us to decide which shoots and clubs to go to. Set up a schedule of which dates/times/locations that we'll attend. One event a month for a few months. Go to Champaign/Urbana on month, Danville the next, Pekin, etc. Shouldn't be too hard for us to all agree to attend certain shoots on certain dates...to meet up as a group.

Well, those are my thoughts on it.

Just a few miles south of Danville there is Illiana bowhunters. They have monthly shoots that can be shot on Saturday evenings after 3 p.m or on Sunday morning. It's a nice 30 target 3d course with targets set up very freindly for tradional archers. theres normaly around a dozen or so trad shooters at each shoot but more would be great! 2009 dates are not out yet but should be soon.

Hey guys, I've got a few drivers that are in the Decatur,Morton,or Aurora areas some weekends and would love to get in on something like this.

I'll spread the word and see what I get back from them.

We couldn't make many events but, having some chance to shoot with others would be better than tennis balls - alone!

there is an awesome range in Monticello, Backwoods archery.  the have an indoor 3-d I think it is 20 targes, a 5 spot range and a technical hunter video range.  Perhaps after the season is over we could meet there for the first time.  What do you all think?  I know it will take a while to get some of the shoot's set up for some club's don't have a schedule yet, put feelers out to the ones I know.  anyone from Newton?  I heard they have a great shoot called Nancy I think.  Shelbyville has a little outdoor roving backstop course of foam that DNR keeps up and Clinton has a little range too, guess we could meet up there for the first time too.  As far as Bowfishing Shelbyville, I can get 4 average guys on the boat at one time.  three shooters, have done it before and rotate everytime some gets a fish/shot.  Likely be looking at the middle or end of March to hit it.  Will discuss this more, little later.

I agree the UBI is where we all need to be, but have to be sponsored to join.  I think the first weekend in March at Pekin is a great idea.  Use to shoot there few years ago, loved the course and if I remember right they had a great traditional tournament they called "Fred Bear" rules, loved shooting it.

True Todd, membership requires a sponsor, but not to attend the Banquet.  The daytime activities, seminars and such, are open to the public.  Dinner is open to members and guests.  Any TradGanger that wants to come can contact me about the guest thing.

Apathy is the #1 thing that bowhunters have going against them these days with the legislature and IDNR.  If someone wanted to know about the UBI or the status of bowhunting in Illinois, the banquet is THE place to get answers.  Rick

I agree, Rick.  Any of the Illinois guys who could make it would find a lot of interesting folks and "stuff" at the banquet.

I had the chance to be on a hunt with Monty Browning last year, and can guarantee that you would LOVE his presentation.  I've met a lot of fine people in our sport, but Monty is a very special guy!  He's accomplished more hunting with the bow than most people could even dream about, but is humble, funny, and deep in the thoughts he shares.

I promise it would be well worth your time and money.  Hope to meet some of you there!

Daryl

Illinois spring weather is always a crap shoot.  The morning was actually very nice.  It was my first 3-D for the year and it felt great to shoot a new course.  I made it around the course before the storm hit and drove thru the rain on my way back thru town.  It didn't last long, but the volume and wind were definitely there.

That is a concern, BT, but if our club holds a shoot on a Saturday, attendance is way down and most clubs see the same thing.  We do our shoots on Sunday and keep the registration and range open until afternoon so that we can attend church and still make the shoot.
